Another year has gone by and everyone at Community Meals, Inc. has been
very busy. In a quote by Terri Guillemets, “The world is hugged by the
faithful arms of volunteers” and our volunteers have given out many, many
hugs! The winter was much kinder to us this year and we were grateful.
Our clients were still delivered Blizzard Bags, bags of shelf stable food, in
the event the meal delivery is canceled. Better to be prepared and that our
clients are taken care of. Over the past year, CMI’s roster has grown so our
volunteers are delivering more meals every day. Last year our loyal
volunteers packed and delivered 24,282 meals over 253 days, which are
almost 100 meals a day!
Our board for 2016 has one new addition, Neal Sherman. Neal has been
delivering meals for Community Meals for almost two years and has been
involved in our March for Meals campaign this year. Many of our board
members have experience in working with other non-profit organizations.
I believe that our board members and executive staff’s combined
experience and excellent skill sets will assure our organizations’ highly
responsible use of resources and continued success in serving our clients.
We will continue our goal to be able to deliver affordable meals to our
clients and to provide reduced-cost or free meals to those clients with
financial needs. We support those that are elderly, ill, or disabled who
cannot shop or prepare meals for themselves.
Fundraising is a necessary component of the CMI mission. We continue to
reach out to small businesses, corporations, civic organizations,
foundations and individuals to close the gap between our revenues and our
expenses. CMI also continues to organize fundraising events to secure
donations. We are so grateful to all of the grantors who did support us
over the past year and we will continue to nurture these relationships and
continue to seek new support opportunities in the future.

LETTERS OF LOVE

BLIZZARD BAGS
This past February, Community Meals once again received
hundreds of handmade Valentine cards created for our
clients from young people across the country. This
campaign, a collaboration between Meals On Wheels
Association of America and DoSomething.org, encouraged
teens to make Valentine's Day cards for homebound,
elderly, ill or disabled adults to convey their messages of
love and support.
“We received about 400 cards this year, and so each of our
clients received several individual cards, each with a
unique Valentine message,” said Rebecca Conboy,
Executive Director of Community Meals, Inc. “We are
grateful for this thoughtful gesture by young people from
many places for the third year in a row.”
In early November, the Blizzard Bag Committee met to
plan our shopping strategy and organize the assembly of
the bags. Lists were made, dates were agreed on and we set
off to work. The committee members shopped for the
items and filled the bags. Included in each of the reusable
shopping bags were soup, milk, crackers, oatmeal and
other essentials to get CMI's clients through a couple of
days when normal deliveries cannot be made due to
inclement weather. By mid-November, the Blizzard Bags
were distributed to all of our clients, free of charge, by our
faithful volunteers during regular meal deliveries.
These bags are important and can make the
difference to someone who is relying on our program for
their regular meals.
DoSomething.org sponsors ongoing national campaigns
in an effort to inspire young people to use their time and
talent for social good. Projects are intended to make a
memorable impact and do not require money, an adult, or
a car. With a goal of five million active members,
DoSomething.org is one of the largest organizations in the
US for teens and social change.

MARCH FOR MEALS

Community Meals has been an active participant in the
Mayors for Meals event, a component of the month-long
March for Meals national campaign since 2010. Mayors
and/or elected officials from the towns we serve deliver
meals to their constituents in an effort to raise awareness
for the growing number of seniors facing senior hunger
and isolation. On March 22 & 23, CMI welcomed the
Honorable Liz White (Mayor of Allendale) and Allendale
Councilwomen Amy Wilczynski and Jackie McSwiggan;
the Honorable Bruce Packer (Mayor of Glen Rock), the
Honorable Paul Aronsohn (Mayor of Ridgewood) and the
Honorable Thomas Giordano (Mayor of Waldwick). We
appreciate the support and dedication of our elected
officials.
This year, as CMI celebrates 45 years of serving a
growing community, we committed to the month-long
March for Meals campaign, expanding our program to
include a variety of “Community Champions” in hopes of
bringing a wider scope of attention to our privately funded
community service--and whose services are not duplicated
by any other organization or agency in the towns we serve.
Our goal continues to be to recruit new volunteers from
our community and to increase fundraising from
foundations, local businesses and supporters.

Contemporary Club of Ho-Ho-Kus, The Woman’s Club of
Ridgewood, Women in Community Service (WICS--Glen
Rock), Kristine Nylund (member of the Ho-Ho-Kus Board
of Health), Terrie O’Connor Realtors: Ellen Kimmerle,
Louise Jennee, and Eleanor Collins, and from The Valley
Hospital Food & Nutrition Department: Dawn Cascio, MS
RD, Director and Debbie Gorglione, Diet Office Supervisor.
Your participation can ensure the seniors in our
community to live more healthy, happy and independent
lives at home, where they want to be.
We also wish to thank the editors of the local newspapers
and online news services for sending reporters and
photographers to cover our events, as well as local
churches who printed information about our campaign in
their Sunday bulletins.
The grant application, which
included documentation, (photographs, social media
postings, letters to the editor, relevant articles) from the
above efforts were complied and submitted to Meals On
Wheels America on April 15th. Last year CMI was
awarded $2,000 and this year we hope to do better. The
grand prize is $10,000, gold level is $5,000 and silver level
is $2,500.

I hope you will be able to participate in to our 7th Annual
“Meals That Matter” fundraiser on Thursday, June 9.
Various restaurants in the towns that we serve generously
agree to donate a percentage of the day’s receipts to
Community Meals. Simply dine in one of the restaurants
listed on page six on June 9th and we do the rest. It is easy
and fun and you can “Enjoy your meal out so others may
enjoy their meals in.” Thank you to all of the participating
restaurants for their generosity in hosting this event and to
all of you who have supported past fundraisers.
Executive staff for keeping the office running efficiently.
And of course our Board Members for the hours of time
they give to keep CMI running smoothly. Have a wonderful
spring and summer!

New Director on Board
On April 7, the Community Meals Board of Directors unanimously
elected the following new board member:
None of the many events such as March for Meals, Meals
That Matter, Spring Newsletter, Share the Love campaign,
and many administrative tasks would have been
accomplished without our devoted board members. Our
daily meal deliveries would not have been possible without
our volunteers that arrive each week to pack and deliver
the meals to our clients. They not only deliver meals, but
bring a smile, a brief conversation and happiness to our
clients. Many of our volunteers are the only visitors our
clients have. On many occasions, our volunteers have
helped clients by contacting the police or EMTs when
medical care is needed. I thank all of our volunteers for
their time, effort and dependability; you truly make such a
difference in many people’s lives. A special thank you to
our Day Chairs – Lynne, Peggy, Jeffrey, and Jack for
ensuring that our delivery routes are covered and to the

VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON
member who has been with Community Meals since its
start, does a fantastic job organizing these luncheons.
On Monday, November 7, 2016, at 12:30 PM, we will be
welcoming all our volunteers to our 45th Annual
Volunteer Recognition luncheon. The luncheon is held at
the Ridgewood Woman’s Club. It is such a wonderful
time when all of our volunteers gather and are recognized
for the hours of time they give to Community Meals. In
addition to our daily volunteers, board members and our
executive staff, mayors from the towns that we serve are
also in attendance. Vivian Peterson, an “ex-officio” board
In the past, we had talented musicians who played
during the luncheon. We are losing our great
musicians, Gui Rinesh, a violinist, who has moved to
Arizona, and our bassist, Jimmy Conboy, son of our
Executive Director Rebecca Conboy, who will be
attending Middlebury College in the fall. Congratulations,
we will miss you both.
Neal has been volunteering at CMI for the past 18 months
and very much enjoys delivering food to our clients. He
joined us after taking an early retirement from his job as a
Project Manager at a NYC advertising firm. He had been in
this field for over 30 years, working on many major
accounts like Mercedes-Benz, Pfizer and Revlon. Neal
enjoys taking long walks around the area early each
morning to get himself ready for the day. He has resided in
Ridgewood for 30 years along with his partner, Rich. They
recently purchased a second home in Maine as both of
them are now retired from the workforce. They will be
splitting their time between each location as the seasons
change, enjoying each state’s beauty. Neal is an avid movie
fan, as well as, all the classic British comedy shows.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at this year’s
luncheon.

DONATE GOODS FOR THE GREATER GOOD!
The items in your home you no longer need may be just what someone else is looking for! Donating your
gently used goods will be very good indeed for Community Meals!
Bring your unwanted items in excellent condition to The Community Thrift Shop in Midland Park. The
thrift shop exists to support charities and give low-income customers a great place to shop. CMI receives a
portion of the revenues from the sale of your donated items. The thrift shop accepts clothes, jewelry,
books, toys, china, glassware, linens, small furniture and most household items. Simply tell the staff that
your donation is for CMI (Charity No. 87.) The more “inventory” our supporters provide to the thrift
shop, the more money we receive to defray the cost of our meals and fully subsidize our clients with
financial need. In 2015 we earned over $1,200 from the shop! The Community Thrift Shop welcomes inseason clothing (no men’s suits) and also is actively seeking current magazines, especially those for
women. Bric-a-brac and household décor items are very popular sellers.
Donations may be made only on Mondays from 10 am to 2 pm and on the first Saturday of the month,
also 10 am to 2 pm. Up to four shopping bags per donation are permitted and tax receipts are provided.
Shoppers are welcome on Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. The Community Thrift Shop is store
#85 in the lower level of the Midland Park Shopping Center (King’s, CVS etc. but entrance is in the back of
the building) at Godwin Ave. and Goffle Rd.
