OUTTURN December 15 - Bergslagens Destilleri
OUTTURN December 15 God Jul och Gott Nytt År! flavour be your guiding light Let Young & Spritely Sweet, Fruity & Mellow Spicy & Sweet Spicy & Dry Deep, Rich & Dried Fruits Old & Dignified Light & Delicate Juicy, Oak & Vanilla Oily & Coastal Lightly Peated Peated Spicy & Sweet Discover a Fly Cemetery A n inviting and pleasing nose awaited the Panel and it had written all over it ‘discover me!’ Aromas of baking gingerbread men, preparing bacon butties, cinder toffee, molasses and a ‘Fly Cemetery’ - fruit slice with raisins, currants and mixed spices. Rich and spicy on the taste neat; cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, juicy sultanas, hazelnuts and a glass of Malmsey Madeira. A drop of water and the aroma turned a lot sweeter; Dolly Mixtures, fudge, Millionaires’ shortbread and a honey nut loaf. So did the taste; caramel apple-cherry pie, lemon drizzle cake and pancakes with lemon juice and a berry compote. 949 sek Drinking tip: Be careful when adding water. Spicy & Sweet Classic sweet and spicy duality T he nose presented the classic duality of barley-derived sweetness (rice crispy cakes, honey, caramel, golden syrup, toffee) and woody spice (Black Jacks, tobacco, nutmeg, cinnamon, spiced rum). The palate displayed intense spiciness (hot-cross buns, liquorice, ginger, treacle scones, tea-chests) but sweeter, lighter notes of sticky toffee pudding, crème brûlée, Parma violets, melon and cucumber were shyly peeking round. Water brought out the cereal notes on the nose (Ready Brek, Weetabix), some fruits (grapes, elderberries) and something lightly medicinal. The palate remained sweet (Victoria sponge, vanilla, honey) but with deeper, tannic flourishes in the finish – malt extract, cough syrup and tobacco. Drinking tip: A great warming dram for a winter twilight following a fine day in the frost-glistening hills. 971 sek Old & Dignified Syrup sponge in a lumberjack’s pocket T his dram smelled like a barista’s apron (coffee, brown sugar, chocolate) with further sweetness of honey, cinder toffee, dried dates, apricot jam and syrupsmothered pancakes, but always balanced by polished wood and a sawmill wrapped in Fablon. Waves of sweetness flooded the mouth – toffee, salted chocolate, honey, boiled sweets and lollipops and it had very attractive cigar box woodiness. The reduced nose continued the wood and sweetness theme – syrup sponge pudding in a lumberjack’s pocket, honey nut cornflakes (including the sunshine), butterscotch and maple syrup – completely sensual and elegant. The reduced palate was deliciously tasty and sophisticated – candy floss and passion-fruit. Drinking tip: A joyous contemplative dram. You could sip this while fishing in the sunshine – it wouldn’t matter if you didn’t get a bite. 1605 sek Juicy, Oak & Vanilla Sweet citrus and attractive perfumes T he nose stimulated us with tons of Haribos (Dolly Mixtures for older generations), vanilla slices, pineapple humps and cup cakes – eventually more complex – jasmine tea, cigar boxes, walnut oil and flat-pack furniture. The neat palate had plentiful sweetness (peach juice, white chocolate, tinned pineapple, syrupy gulab jamun) – but never sickly, thanks to chilli heat and tobacco and grapefruit bitterness. The nose developed attractive perfumes with water (peach, jasmine, lily of the valley, lemon cup cakes). The reduced palate was ‘satisfying’ and ‘enjoyable’ – sweetly citric, with caramelized apple, lemon drizzle cake and ice cream, plus ginger, pepper, mint and menthol to finish. Drinking tip: A great aperitif – to get the juices flowing. 952 sek Juicy, Oak & Vanilla Extreme piña colada W ow…The experience was pure sunshine in a glass! Abundant tropical fruits, mango, papaya, pineapple and guava. There were also Danish pastries with icing sugar, coconut snowballs, oak char, toffee éclairs and toasted teacakes. First on the palate, super juicy sweetness along with equally intense tropical fruit notes. Coconut and pineapple combined for an unparalleled piña colada experience. Water enhanced the chalky sweetness with Edinburgh rock, marshmallows, Tunnock’s teacakes and butter icing. Also, fruity scotch bonnets washed down with homemade lemonade. “So sweet!” juicy and luscious, with honey roast nuts, cream soda, tropical crumble, a dram of incredible depth with butter sauce richness. 1109 sek Drinking tip: In the sun of course! Lightly Peated The Curious Apothecary T he panel found a veritable hotchpotch of aromas, soap on a rope aromatic with lemon and lime then grilled bacon with mango chutney. Our ageing hippie wandered through a market, the air laced with patchouli and lavender. An ashy grill yielded blackened green chilli, lemongrass marinade, holy basil and smoky lychee. He wore an old patched cashmere jumper and well worn leather flip flops, with a notebook tucked under his arm. He supped on Rooibos tea while thoughtfully chewing baccy and sooking pear and blackberry pastilles. Satisfied with his work, he dipped his toes into a warm rock pool. Drinking tip: To encourage debate with friends. 1252 sek Mer inf Ge bort ett medlemskap till någon du tycker om denna jul. www.smwssweden.com Whisky för alla @SMWSsweden The Scotch malt whisky society, sweden
