Welcome to the 11th annual “Evening of Hope.”
Our 53 member hotels have made this event one of the premier
events of the local fund raisers and it showcases the level of
generosity of each member hotel. Part of our purpose is to create
a favorable climate that promotes the economic well being of the
hospitality industry in Seattle as well as the community at large.
Through this event we accomplish this goal while giving back to
our community. We also recognize the support of our presenting
sponsors: WAMU, Microsoft, MaxMara and others. Without the
support of our local business community this event would not be
possible.
Ten years ago, with the initial support of the Northwest AIDS
Foundation, we created an event to benefit local charities with the
mission to make an impact in the lives of people in and around
Seattle. We think we have accomplished this over the last ten years
and we continue our mission with the support tonight of Plymouth
Housing Group and the much larger goal to end homelessness in
Seattle.
In this effort we join with the City of Seattle, King County and
our honorees Jeff and Tricia Raikes, who over the years have made
numerous contributions through their work with United Way
of King County, King County Boys and Girls Club and their
partnership with tonight’s beneficiary, Plymouth Housing Group.
We trust you will all enjoy this evening and look forward to your
continued generosity by raising your bid paddle throughout the
night. We appreciate your support in our mission to help Seattle’s
homeless each find a warm and safe place to call their own, It is
always nice to come home.

Letter from the President
I am very fortunate to work and live in a city where the hospitality
industry is committed to giving back to the community and
addressing needs in our own backyard. As such, for the second year
in a row, it has been a pleasure to work with Plymouth Housing
Group (PHG) as this year’s “Evening of Hope” recipient.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported “Evening
of Hope.” You have ultimately raised awareness and funds for an
issue that has an impact on the whole society and supports PHG’s
mission - to move people directly out of homelessness and address
long-term housing issues in Seattle.
Tonight, we recognize Jeff and Tricia Raikes for their philanthropic
efforts and their dedication to ending the cycle of homelessness.
The Raikes have shown tremendous passion for the community and
we are proud to celebrate their achievements and contributions.
Together with Seattle Hotel Association members and volunteers
and the work of many dedicated people like the Raikes, I would
also like to thank “Evening of Hope” Gala co-chairs, Dan
Spurgeon, General Manager of the Executive Hotel Pacific and
René Neidhart, General Manager of the Renaissance Seattle Hotel.
It is my privilege to be associated with such inspired individuals
who have created the vision for how our association could help our
downtown community.
The partnerships and friendships cultivated at “Evening of Hope”
have grown over the years. The success of the gala is due to the
hard work and dedication of people like you—our partners,
friends, donors, sponsors, volunteers and attendees who come
together to make this evening possible. On behalf of the Seattle
Hotel Association, we thank you for helping to strengthen our
community through events such as these and look forward to
celebrating another successful gala.

Dear Friends,
I am pleased that the Seattle Hotel Association has again
chosen Plymouth Housing Group as the beneficiary of
the Seattle Hotel Association’s 11th Annual “Evening of
Hope” Gala. This is a deeply generous gift that is very much
appreciated by the entire Plymouth staff and Board of
Trustees.
Plymouth Housing Group and the Seattle Hotel Association have
much in common. We are both committed to making Seattle a thriving
environment for business development and tourism. And we both know
that strong business and community partnerships like ours both improve
the quality of life for our most vulnerable populations and make Seattle a
great place to live and work, and especially to visit.
In the fall of 2007, Plymouth successfully completed our $52 million
Building Hope Capital Campaign to add 300 units of supportive housing
in new or renovated buildings throughout the Seattle downtown core.
Plymouth buildings anchor and revitalize the neighborhoods around them,
support thriving businesses in street-level retail spaces, and preserve historic
buildings, many of them former hotels. For more than 25 years, Plymouth
Housing Group has provided affordable housing for homeless and very low
income individuals, and tonight’s proceeds from the “Evening of Hope”
will help Plymouth provide the necessary support services to help residents
regain their dignity and live independently.
Tonight Plymouth Housing Group is pleased to honor two individuals
who’ve made a personal commitment to ending homelessness in our
community, Tricia and Jeff Raikes. Their philanthropic leadership in our
city is unparalleled. Whether it is through their support for
such organizations as United Way (they were the 2006-07
co-chairs of the most successful King County United
Way Community Campaign ever), Boys and Girls Clubs
of King County, or through support from their family
foundation, Tricia and Jeff have stepped up to change
our community for the better. Their passionate desire to
end homelessness is evident in their personal actions—last
September, they joined Plymouth staff and tenants on the United Way Day
of Caring helping us beautify one of our older buildings, The Pacific. The
Raikes’ personal involvement means a lot to me and the rest of Plymouth
Housing Group, and I’m very pleased to have the opportunity tonight to
show our appreciation for their leadership and generosity.
Speaking for all of us at Plymouth, I want to thank you for your support
tonight of the goal of ending homelessness in our community. I hope
you enjoy this wonderful “Evening of Hope” put on by the Seattle Hotel
Association!
Sincerely,
Paul Lambros, Executive Director
Plymouth Housing Group
Plymouth Housing Group works to eliminate
homelessness and stabilize homeless and
very low-income people in housing by
preserving, developing and operating safe,
decent, affordable housing, and by providing
opportunities for homeless and very-lowincome people to improve their lives.
In recent years, the Seattle area has experienced strong economic
prosperity—a positive trend with a negative downside. Rising rents
and housing prices means that affordable housing is out of reach
for a growing number of people in our community. Almost 8,000
people do not have a place to sleep each night in Seattle, many of
them with complicated special needs such as chemical dependency,
disabilities, AIDS, or the disabling effects of old age. Plymouth
Housing Group (PHG) serves those most in need with our unique
model of permanent, supportive housing.
Thanks to the generous support of our community and many of
you here tonight, PHG just completed a successful $52 million
Building Hope Capital Campaign, renovating three historic
buildings and building one new apartment building. Today, PHG
owns and manages 13 buildings in or near downtown Seattle that
provide safe, decent, affordable apartments for close to 1,000
tenants. Our brand new Langdon and Anne Simons Senior
Apartments at 3rd and Blanchard accommodates 92 seniors and
armed services veterans who need specially-equipped apartments
and support services.
PHG realizes that providing housing alone does not end
homelessness. Many homeless people need much more than a
roof over their heads—they need medical care, mental health
counseling, chemical dependency services, and life skills coaching.
PHG’s Housing Case Managers assist tenants as they make their
transition from homelessness to permanent housing and provide
opportunities for tenant skill development, employment, and
community connections. Plymouth’s supportive housing costs less
than $11,000 a year per tenant in contrast to studies that show
that a chronically homeless person uses up to $50,000 a year in
emergency services.
Our successful housing model benefits more that just our tenants—
by operating well-maintained buildings with successful commercial
tenants, Plymouth helps create a vibrant business environment
in downtown Seattle. PHG is also committed to historical
preservation—we have saved many significant Seattle buildings
from being demolished, including several historic hotels, and given
them new life as homes for our most vulnerable citizens.
Supporting Plymouth Housing Group shows you believe that
everyone deserves a safe place to call home. We appreciate your
support for our mission and our vision to end homelessness in our
community.

Double Peony III by Jeffry Mitchell
Over an extended period of time Jeffry Mitchell has created multiple drawings of peonies, an
image he has investigated over the last 30 years, using the traditional technique of soft ground
etching. During the proofing stages of his ongoing project with Sheila Coppola at Seattle based
Sidereal Press, Mr. Mitchell paired etched plates to arrive at a number of different combinations.
From these various combinations, he has selected three to edition in black and white. Measuring
34” x 47” framed, Double Peony III is an artist’s proof created in 2007 and designated AP I.
Flowers have been used as metaphors or signifiers throughout the history of art. Through their
simple beauty, the flowers and their leaves reflect on emotional and psychological needs or
desires. Mr. Mitchell received his BA in Painting at the University of Dallas, TX, and a MFA
degree in printmaking from Tyler School of Art of Temple University in Philadelphia. He has
received the Neddy Award from the Behnke Foundation, an Artist Trust Visual Arts Fellowship,
and he has also had several residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts
in Helena, Montana. Jeffry Mitchell exhibits his work at James Harris Gallery in Seattle and
Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery in Portland.

individuals who repeatedly visit the emergency room and have serious medical conditions or
drug and alcohol addiction—Plymouth reduced emergency room expenses 75% from $1.6
million to $400,000 in just one year and kept these residents stable in safe, permanent homes.

Nostaglic Reference #6 by Piper Hopkins
Piper Hopkins’ body of work explores the nuances of emotion and nostalgia through frenetic
line work, jarring static forms and scale. By creating visual juxtapositions of loose figural forms
placed on highly reflective metallic and silver-leafed backgrounds, she delves into the ways
memories and feelings of nostalgia are interwoven, contained, or obfuscated by time. Nostalgic
Reference #6 is a 2008 mixed media work utilizing silver leaf and India ink on canvas which
measures 30” x 30”. Piper Hopkins has a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York, and
a Masters of Communication in Digital Media from the University of Washington..Among her
recent Northwest exhibitions are solo presentations at Seattle’s Area 51, Miro Tea, and BalMar;
her work has also been included in group exhibitions for COCA and several other organizations.

Dinner for Six at Trader Vic’s
Can’t make the trip to the islands? Invite two couples for an incredible weekend overnight
getaway just across the bridge, in Bellevue. Three couples will be wined and dined at the
legendary Trader Vic’s. Since the early days, people around the world have fallen into the

first Trader Vic’s was in the downtown Westin Hotel in 1949. Throughout its local reign and well
into the 1960s, Trader Vic’s was heralded as THE place to dress to the nines and dine. Trader

Fly Fishing Lessons and Dinner at Steelhead Diner for Six
Reel in the big one with your brand new Sage fishing rod, reel and a box of flys. Every piece of
Sage fly fishing equipment they make is designed, tested and hand built with one goal in mind:
Maximum fishability. It’s a term Sage came up with a few years back to describe the kind of
performance that helps you cast better, fish more effectively and have more fun. In short, every
Sage fly fishing rod, reel and line is specifically designed to help you make the most of your
precious time on the water. Try out your new rod with five pals for a day of catch and release fly
fishing on the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River. Your host, Liz Wallace, will show you the
best holes, provide fishing tips and set you loose on nearly 200 feet of private frontage on this
rugged stretch of the river. You’ll share a cold beverage and boxed lunches from Gretchen’s of
Course.
Then pack up your pals and share your fish stories over dinner at Steelhead Diner, the smartcasual restaurant in the heart of the Pike Place Market. Enjoy the amazing cuisine of Chef
Kevin Davis and ingredients from good-for-the-earth purveyors —fisheries, local growers, bread
makers, cheese makers, organic and natural beef producers. Relax with a view of the Market,
Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains. Now this is what the great outdoors is all about!

Seriously Good Fun& Food at Serious Pie for Eight
Tom Douglas’ new pizzeria, Serious Pie, is a warm, intimate space with tumbled stone tiles on
the walls, a lofty timber frame ceiling hung with black wrought iron chandeliers, and dramatic
slabs of natural stone framing an apple-wood burning oven. It’s also the new “hot spot” in
Belltown. During daytime hours, diners can view the bread bakers pulling rustic loaves of bread
from our French bread baking ovens. The “Pie” is a pizzeria with a bread baker’s soul. Tom’s
vision of the perfect pie, a simple but “serious” pie, is brought to life on this blistered crust,
lightly textured but with just enough structure and bite, and with exactly the right amount of
“serious” toppings. Mmmm.

Cave B 2005 Semillon
The 15 months that it spent in oak, together with the bright acidity, ensure that this wine is fully
conditioned for a long life of aging in your cellar. The 2005 Cave B Sémillon has the distinction

this stature will age impressively over the course of time, yet it is ready for drinking now as an
accompaniment to a broad range of seafood.
