Introduction

Introduction
You finally did it! You have moved out of your parents’ house and have become a college student.
Everything is going well, until that dreaded day when you cannot put off doing your laundry any
longer. You do not know where to begin! What if you turn your shirts pink? What if you shrink
your favorite pants? All of the setting on the washer and dryer can be so confusing. Choosing
which laundry detergent to use could leave anyone stressed.
You could easily find yourself in this situation without the proper training. Fortunately, cleaning
your laundry can become a quick and simple process with this manual.
Manual Overview
By following the instructions in this manual you will
 Understanding the materials
 Learning how to separate your clothing properly
 Understanding the proper washing setting for each load
 Understanding the proper drying setting for each load
In this manual I will not explain how to work a washer or a dryer. I will also not include the cost of
the cleaning supplies because prices may differ for each brand.
Supplies
In order to properly wash and dry your clothing you will need the following items
 Laundry basket
 Laundry detergent
 Dryer sheets
 Laundry bag (optional)
 Fabric Softener (optional)
 Woolite (optional)
Once you have gathered the proper supplies, you will be able to begin washing and drying your
clothing.
Words that are bolded in Green can be found on the glossary on page 24.
Understanding the Materials
Chapter One
3
Understanding the Materials
Before you begin washing your clothing you need to have an understanding of which laundry
materials to use.
Laundry Detergent
This will be needed to clean your clothing in the washer. Laundry detergent can come in a liquid
or powder form. Recently Tide™ has created laundry detergent pods. Pods contain liquid
detergent and fabric softener in one tiny package.
Dryer Sheets
Your clothes will create static when put it in the dry. Adding dryer sheets, such as Downey, to your
clothes during the drying process can prevent this. There are a number of brands to choose from.
You should base your purchase on price and quality. You should also check the scent before
buying them.
Laundry Basket
When you need to transport your clothes to the laundry room and back, a laundry basket will be
need. Laundry baskets come in different colors and sizes. As a college student, I suggest you get a

laundry hamper that is flexible in design. Your space can be limited, so you need to find a laundry
basket that will not take up a lot of room.
Optional Items
Laundry Bag
A laundry bag protects any delicate clothing while they are in the washer. They are made of a mesh
material and can range in size. This item will be optional. I recommend using it if you have pantyhose or underwear that you do not want to get ruined.
Woolite
If you have any delicate clothing, regular laundry detergent can be harmful. In order to avoid
damaging your clothes replace your regular detergent with Woolite. Woolite cleans your clothes
but instead uses a more delicate system.
Chapter One
Fabric Softener
Fabric softener can be used if you have a larger load and you want to boost the scent and softness.
Fabric Softener comes in a liquid form. You can add it to your washer along with your detergent.
