highlights” from this academic year.

Chell, associate development officer.
Casey received her master’s in Arts
Administration from IU and comes to
the Jacobs School with a background in
fundraising for the arts.

DEVELOPMENT
Meet Ann Harrison
Ann Harrison graduated from IU in 1967
with a B.S. in Art Education. Her design background has been helpful in many endeavors, including building a log cabin, which was featured
in Architectural Digest and Traditional Home.
Harrison and her husband, Rusty, have lived
in Attica, Ind., for the past 38 years, where she
is involved with numerous local organizations.
In addition, she is a founding member of the
Women’s Philanthropic Council, co-chair of
Colloquium for Women of IU, and a member of
the IU Foundation Board, IU Museum of Art
National Advisory Board, and the Jacobs School
of Music Dean’s Advisory Board.
After she and a friend wrote Take a Little
Thyme, a 500-page collection of family recipes,
Harrison was asked to manage the restaurant of
Harrison Hills Country Club in Attica, where
she worked for 20 years.
Harrison and her husband have been active
with the Friends of Music for the past 20 years.
After attending a violin performance of firstgraders at Fairview Elementary, she was moved
by this Jacobs School project and envisioned
bringing such a program to Attica.
The Harrisons and Harrison Steel made a generous investment to begin the Attica Elementary
School String Project. Ann then met with Attica
school officials and rallied support from the
community. The program, now three years old,
comes at no cost to Attica Elementary School.
Most recently, the couple supported IU Opera
Theater by underwriting the cost of the use of the
Buskirk-Chumley Theater for the production of
Albert Herring.
We are grateful to the Harrisons for their
generosity, friendship, and all they help make
possible for Indiana University.

Marching Hundred Hall Gift
Indiana University’s famed Marching Hundred band has taken a significant step toward
its goal of constructing a new practice facility,
thanks to a recent commitment of $1 million
in a planned gift from university alumnus
Col. Jack I. Hamlin, B.S.’43, and his wife, Dora.
The two met while they were students at IU.
He was first-chair cornet in the Marching Hundred and captain of his Reserve Officer Training
Corps band unit.
“Col. Jack I. and Dora Hamlin have been
incredibly supportive of Indiana University
and the Jacobs School of Music,” said Melissa
Korzec, head of development at the school.
“Their continued generosity will help to provide
a bright future for the Marching Hundred.”
Through the support of several private donors,
including Cook Group and the Hamlins— whose
gift will be administered by the IU Foundation—
the Jacobs School currently has more than $2
million dedicated to the $4.5 million project.
The new facility will establish a permanent
home for the Marching Hundred, which has
been housed in a number of temporary rehearsal
spaces for almost 30 years. The lack of indoor
space means rehearsals must be canceled due to
inclement weather. Since the Marching Hundred
is a class for which students receive academic
credit, it is a class without a classroom, for which
an adequate facility is long overdue.

Elementary School Guitar Project
Students of Templeton Elementary School
in Bloomington, Ind., are now receiving guitar
instruction as part of their general music class
thanks to the Templeton Elementary School
Guitar Project.
Each of the 65 first-graders at Templeton now
has the opportunity to have a hands-on musical
experience with closely monitored instruction
from Jacobs School guitar faculty members
Petar Jankovic and Atanas Tzvetkov, and several
Jacobs guitar majors. The project is designed
to develop basic guitar skills while enhancing
concepts covered in general elementary music.
Dreams of this project became a reality
thanks to generous gifts from both the Yamaha
Corporation of American and the IU Foundation’s Women’s Philanthropy Council (WPC).

Yamaha provided 30 half-sized guitars and cases,
and the WPC made possible funding that will
support the project’s teachers.
The initiative is part of an ongoing goal of
the Jacobs School to reach out to the greater
community through its Elementary Engagement
Project (EEP).
The EEP currently has three divisions—the
Fairview Elementary School String Project
(Bloomington, Ind.), the Attica Elementary
School String Project (Attica, Ind.), and the
Templeton Elementary School Guitar Project
(Bloomington, Ind.).

America and the Women’s Philanthropy Council
for making possible this unique opportunity in
the Bloomington community.
