As I begin my term as your HBA President,
I want to start off by encouraging you to
consider increasing your involvement in
the association this year. Our group is only
as successful as the people who attend the
meetings, organize the events and promote
the industry. And those people are you, the
member.
I’m very proud to say that our HBA is one of
the strongest in the country as we have a high
retention rate and considering the size of
the Sioux Empire, our membership numbers
are really strong. Currently we have over
775 companies that are members of the
association!

That’s why involvement in the association
is so important. With over 13 committees,
the Care Foundation, the Remodeling Council
and the Sioux Empire Friends of Affordable
Housing, there are plenty of opportunities
to share your talents. We are always seeking
new perspectives and fresh ideas on
everything from workforce development to
local government affairs to member services
and more!
It all starts at the committee level.
The volunteers that give their time at those
meetings are the ones who make the decisions
that impact the overall outcome for everything
that our HBA does. From organizing the Home
Show to regulating fee increases with the city,
our committee members are the heart and
soul of the HBASE.
If you’d like to make a difference and have
your voice heard, join a committee. Call
the HBASE office and the staff can visit with
you about the different options to find the
best committee that suites your interests and
schedule. See page 8 for a full list of committees.

Exhibitors will receive important information in January including all necessary order forms and details on
parking locations for exhibitors. In February, exhibitors will receive their handbook, a move-in schedule, show
map, consumer tickets ordered and ADA compliance information. Read this carefully and call the HBASE if
you have questions.
EXHIBITOR PACKET PICKUP
Exhibitor packets can be picked up at the HBASE office from 2/22 - 2/26 and then at the Convention Center in
meeting room 3 after 3/1.
Event Promotions
Posters will be available at the HBASE office in February. Help promote the event by displaying these at your
business. If you have a marquee or a newsletter, please consider announcing the event dates. You’re also
invited to include Home Show dates in your advertising and on your website - please link to hbasiouxempire.

The EPA requires Certified Renovators
take a refresher training course to
maintain compliance with the lead
Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP)
rule. This HBASE educational class will
be presented with an EPA-Certified
Trainer and continuing education credits
will be available to licensed Sioux Falls
contractors.
The RRP rule affects contractors, property
managers and others who disturb known
or presumed lead-based paint during
renovation. The term renovation covers
all activities done for compensation that
disturb painted surfaces including most
repair, remodeling and maintenance
activities, such as window replacement,
weatherization and demolition. The
RRP rule applies to all renovation
work performed in residential houses,
apartments and child-occupied facilities
such as schools and day-care centers
built before 1978.

BUILDING CODE AMENDMENT APPROVED
In a significant victory for HBASE members on December 15, the Sioux
Falls City Council approved the 2015 IRC building code and unanimously
approved a local amendment that removes the requirement to drywall
unfinished basement ceilings in newly built homes. HBASE, through the
help of its members and other stakeholder groups, were successful in
maintaining a cost effective local building code. Had the code not been
amended, then an average cost of $2,000 - $3,000 would have been
added to newly constructed homes.
This effort could not have happened without the help of individuals
attending this City Council Meeting, those who visited with City Council
Members or HBASE Building Code Committee members who had
reviewed issues in the building code for the previous nine months.
We thank you all for helping make this effort successful.

and expertise to someone in need.
