Life in London
Make the most out of this fantastic city! London is
an exciting international destination – plunge into
the culture and lifestyle of one of the world’s most
vibrant and influential cities. London is a microcosm
of the world with more than 300 languages spoken
amongst its 7.5 million residents. In London alone,
there are more than 90,000 international students
representing over 200 nations.
Culture / Sightseeing
London is a fantastic place to be a visitor as well as a local. With
over 300 museums (twice as many as Paris or New York), 120
historic buildings, 150 theatres, 8,000 acres of parkland, 33 sites
of scientific interest, 37,000 listed buildings, 4 world heritage
sites and 5,000 music venues there is always something to do!
On Regent’s doorstep, London Zoo, the Sherlock Holmes’
museum, the British Library, Soho, the Open Air Theatre and
Madame Tussaud’s (to mention but a few) can all be found. Just
a short distance away discover Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, St
Paul’s Cathedral, Hyde Park, the 2012 Olympic Site, Shakespeare’s
Globe, Harry Potter World and so much more!
Shop ‘til you drop!
The nearby Marylebone High Street is one of London’s wellknown shopping streets where you can find an eclectic mix of
shops and cafes. London’s famous Oxford Street is only a short
walk away and is a bustling shopping area with over 500 shops
to choose from.
Gateway to England’s many neighbours
Fancy a break in mainland Europe? Many students take the
opportunity to visit Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Belgium, the
Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain and many more destinations. The
Eurostar train is a high speed rail service that connects London to
mainland Europe. The London terminal is St. Pancras International,
a short tube ride from Baker Street (our nearest tube station).
This is an easy way to explore Europe as both Paris and Brussels
are just over two hours away. As an international hub for many
destinations, London’s airports are
serviced by a number of low cost
airlines giving you access to a host of
destinations.
Events and Entertainment
Spend an afternoon watching street
artists in Covent Garden or along
the river Thames on the Southbank,
savour a bowl of strawberries and
cream while watching a tennis match
at Wimbledon, cheer for Chelsea,
Arsenal or Tottenham to win the
Champions League, learn the rules of Cricket at Lord’s, watch Rugby
at Twickenham, enjoy world famous shows and musicals in the West
End, go clubbing in one of London’s superclubs or catch a live band in
one of the many music venues...... the only question is what to do first?
The Great Outdoors
Being in a capital city doesn’t mean that the outdoors can’t
also be enjoyed. Regent’s Park, just one of London’s many
green areas, is made up of 197 hectares of parkland. London
is also host to a wide range of outdoor markets located across
the city. Try boating on the Serpentine in Hyde Park, enjoy
the fantastic views from Primrose Hill or discover the many
historical walks available.

Food, glorious food
With over 6,500 places to choose from, London has something for
everyone. Sample the British tradition of fish and chips, explore
Chinatown, splurge at a Michelin starred restaurant, or pick and
mix from street stalls in one of the many market - every type of
cuisine, taste and wallet is catered for.
“When you are tired of London, you are tired of life”
Study the long history of the city, starting from the old city walls
to the 2012 Olympic site. Visit the many royal sites – including
Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court Palace, and the Tower of
London – and learn about the UK’s most famous family and
their histories. Go to Westminster to see where political leaders
including Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher ran the
country. Walk across that famous zebra crossing at Abbey Road
or discover the city where Charles Darwin, Sir Isaac Newton, J K
Rowling, William Shakespeare and Benjamin Franklin have all lived!
Hotbed of Creativity and Trends
London’s advertising agencies win more international awards for
creativity than the next nine European countries combined. Creative
industries employ over 450,000 people in London and generate
over £21 billion in revenue. The London Fashion Week takes place in
central London and is easily accessible from Regent’s. In September
2013 the University hosted Topshop’s Unique Spring Summer 2014
catwalk collection. Up and coming arts and fashion areas including
East London, Shoreditch and Old Street are also close by.
Europe’s Leading Financial Centre
Most of the world’s leading financial institutions are represented in
London. The London Stock Exchange is the most international of
all stock exchanges, with more than 470 companies from over 60
countries admitted to trade. More funds are invested in the City of
London than in the top 10 European cities combined and 75% of
the Fortune 500 companies have London offices.

Academic Matters
Workload
Students generally register for a workload equivalent to that of a
full-time student. Those who require a visa to study in the UK
must take a minimum of 12 US credits and 20 ECTS which is the
equivalent of around 15 hours contact time per week.
Academic Year
Our flexible programmes offer a variety
of study options throughout the year. The
academic year at Regent’s is predominantly
divided into three semesters:
› Autumn (Fall) August / September to December
›Spring January / February to May/June
›Summer programmes run throughout the summer
depending on the subject area
Timetable
The teaching day runs from 08.30 to 21.30. Classes take place
Monday to Friday (depending on programme). Most classes meet
two or three times a week for double periods of 100 minutes or
single periods of 50 minutes each.
Learning Style
In addition to contact hours, we encourage student autonomy and
participation in extracurricular activities. Classes are enhanced by
experiential learning, guest lecturers, with students expected to do
a large amount of self-study. There is also an emphasis on group
work with students writing essays, reports and presentations.
21
‘The seminars and lectures were well organised
and interesting. I also like the atmosphere that
encourages intercommunication among students.’
Oksana Letyago
Study Abroad Student, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, Russia
Assessment
Modules are assessed in a number of ways and assessments can
be made up of different components such as written examination,
coursework and presentations. Different components may carry
different weightings and will vary from module to module and class
to class. Information regarding the assessments methods for each
module can be found in the course syllabus.
Class sizes
Our seminars are limited to 25 students and language classes to
12. Fashion and Design classes may be even smaller. This creates an
excellent environment for learning and gives students the personal
attention they need to excel in their studies.
Academic Transcript / Record of Achievement
Students should speak to their home institution about how
credits are transferred. At the end of the semester students
receive a transcript or a record of achievement which outlines
the modules taken and the grade and marks achieved in each
component of the module.
Attendance
Regent’s University London has an attendance policy which
encourages academic responsibility and seriousness. Attendance
is monitored to ensure that students have the best experience
at Regent’s.

ECTS
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a
system used across Europe for credit transfer. This allows European
educational institutions to translate marks from one institution
to another. By using ECTS, transparency of curricula and learning
achievements is created, which in turn facilitates academic recognition.
ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload
of a full-time student in one academic year. Normally, 30 credits
are given for six months (a semester) and 20 credits for a term (a
trimester). The student workload of a full-time study programme in
Europe amounts in most cases to 1,500 – 1,800 hours per year and
one credit represents a total of 25 – 30 working hours. (Workload in
ECTS consists of the time required to complete all planned learning
activities such as attending lectures, tutorials, preparation of projects,
examinations, independent and private study).
Students studying on UK validated programmes will be able to
receive ECTS on completion of their study period at Regent’s.
Credits
UK validated programmes
Credit is awarded for the achievement of the specified
learning outcomes for each module. One credit is equivalent
to 10 notional learning hours. Generally a fulltime
undergraduate workload is 120 credits per year. Therefore
an undergraduate workload is equivalent to 1,200 notional
learning hours per academic year. Most undergraduate
modules are worth 10 or 20 credits (5 or 10 ECTS).
US validated programmes
Under the US system, a total of 128 credit hours are required for a
degree. The recommended academic load for full-time students is
16 credit hours each semester. Classes in Regent’s American College
London (RACL) typically meet for two 1.5 hour sessions or one 3
hour session per week. Most classes are worth 3 credit hours.
23
Grading scale
Students following our Liberal Arts programme will receive credit
based on the number of classes taken with credits transferred back
at the home institution. A grade point average (GPA) is calculated
on all graded work. Applicants should consult a member of the
Study Abroad Office or a senior member of academic faculty at
the home institution to confirm the number of credits that will be
received. Credits are awarded on the 4 point GPA scale.

Location
Regent’s University London is the perfect destination for Study
Abroad. Our location offers students an oasis in the heart of
London with an 11 acre campus. Experience the bustling life of
London by catching a West End show at the end of class or seeing
real life in London’s financial services centre also known as the “City”.
How to find us?
Regent’s University London is located in the area of Marylebone
with teaching taking place in a number of locations. We are close
to various tube stations, the closest being Baker Street. Regent’s
is also located close to a number of bus routes and mainline
train stations allowing students to access the University easily.
For those who drive we also have a car park on site. Centrally
located, Regent’s has excellent connections for all the major
airports servicing London.

Regent’s History
With over 100 years of history our institution has a
strong background in education. Regent’s Park itself,
also known as “the jewel in the crown” was originally
appropriated by King Henry VIII as a hunting
ground. In 1908 Bedford College, a ladies College,
took a Crown lease on South Villa in the Inner Circle,
moving into Regent’s Park from Bedford Square in
London. Establishing many existing buildings on
this site including Reid Hall, which is now campus
accommodation and the Tate Library, Bedford College
remained on the site until the 1970s when it moved
to expand its programme (resulting in a merger and
eventually becoming Royal Holloway University).

Rockford College, Illinois in the US who took a Crown lease in
1984. As other educational institutions came to the site, these
merged together to form what is today known as Regent’s
University London.
As part of our vision and strategy we gained our Taught Degree
Awarding Powers (TDAPs) in July 2012 and University title in
March 2013. This enables us to develop exciting projects such as
joint / double degrees and creates further learning, teaching and
research opportunities for our academic staff.
In April 2013 Regent’s acquired the London campus of the
American InterContinental University (AIU). This acquisition
has added new programmes and study abroad options to our
portfolio and opened up even more possibilities for Study
Abroad students. We believe that our offering is comprehensive
and suited to student’s needs.
Marylebone has a long established history dating back to the
15th century when a new church and parish of St Mary’s was
created. The local community named themselves St. Mary’s by
the river Tyburn which was close by. This name has evolved over
time into St. Mary-by-the-Tyburn and finally what we now know
as St Mary-le-bone. Boasting some of London’s most beautiful
Georgian architecture and impressive garden squares thanks to
the Howard de Walden and Portman Estates, Marylebone Village
is now a destination for shopping, dining and the arts. As one of
London’s most stylish and eclectic shopping streets, Marylebone
High Street is also a good location to spot one or two celebrities!

Your Support Network
The International Partnerships Office (IPO) is the
central service that coordinates all international
activities at Regent’s University London and is
responsible for establishing partnerships and
collaborating with institutions across the world.
Within the IPO, we have a dedicated team called the Inbound Unit.
It is responsible for all inbound students who come to Regent’s as
part of their degree. You can count on us to:
›
›

send acceptance and visa letters together with pre-arrival information

Student Support Team
Our dedicated Student Support Team is on hand to assist students.
Students can arrange an appointment in advance or drop by to see
a specialist member of staff who can help. The team can assist in
matters of counselling, therapy, learning difficulties and disabilities.
During the semester the team also arranges support classes with a
focus on specific topics such as how to conduct research, academic
writing skills and note taking.
Students Services Office
Offering a wide range of non-academic services including
accommodation advice, airport pick-up, advice on banking and
healthcare and activities to do in London, the Student Services
Office arranges and coordinates a range of trips and excursions
throughout the semester to destinations in London, the UK
and in Europe. Visit our website for more information. Once
accepted to Regent’s students will receive more information
regarding trips and excursions.

International Student Bureau (ISB)
The ISB is a student committee with representatives from
both incoming Study Abroad students as well as Regent’s
University London degree students. Students work on a
voluntary basis to support the work of the IPO and the
Student Union. Throughout the academic year the ISB
organises a series of social and cultural activities aimed
at bringing all students together. Coordinated by the ISB
Committee members this is a great opportunity to meet and
talk to Regent’s students as well as getting to know other
Study Abroad students. Contact [email protected] for more
information about how to get involved or find the ISB on Facebook.

Accommodation
The Accommodation Office can offer assistance with finding
suitable accommodation both on and off-campus. On campus
accommodation can be booked in either Reid Hall or Oliver Hall
where single, double and triple occupancy rooms are available.
The hall reception is staffed 24 hours a day and a member of our
Student Services Department lives on site. Each floor also has
a Resident Assistant who is there to help students settle in and
assist with any queries. Staying on campus is a popular choice but,
as spaces are limited and awarded on a first-come first served
basis, early booking is advisable.
More information
Regent’s-managed housing is also available off-campus within
central London. See the Accommodation website for further
details including costs and application forms. Any questions
should be directed to the Accommodation Office on
[email protected].

Financial Matters
Investing in your Study Abroad experience is worthwhile. Not
only will you gain a ton of life experience that you wouldn’t have

abroad in a foreign environment is quite an achievement that not
everyone is privileged to.

Some institutions pay Regent’s directly for student accommodation;

home institution to find out what applies to you.
Day to Day Costs
London is cheaper than you think! It may be surprising to learn
but London has previously been voted the most cost-effective
UK city for students. While spending opportunities are endless,
it is possible to get by on a budget by planning ahead and
comparing prices. See the London University Guide for details

Visa and Immigration
EU / EEA nationals do not require a visa to study in the UK.
Students from outside the EU may require a visa for study
programmes. In some cases students may need to apply for a
student visa in their home country prior in coming to the UK.
This can be a lengthy process so planning in advance is advisable.
Students requiring a visa should indicate this on the application form.
Once accepted Regent’s University London will issue students with
the relevant documentation to support visa applications with the
Home Office / United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA).
Applications for Tier 4 visas require students to demonstrate
that they have sufficient funds in their bank account to
support their time abroad. They will also be required
to demonstrate that they meet specific English language
requirements. Further details can be found on the UKBA
website http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ and www.gov.uk.

Immigration regulations and requirements change frequently.
While this is correct at time of print, you should visit our
website for the most up to date information and consult the
websites mentioned.
Please note that the Regent’s staff are not legally trained to give
any immigration advice on applying for visas. It is therefore the
student’s responsibility to check whether they need a visa to study
in the UK and if so to ensure that they apply for the correct type
in sufficient time.
