Week 5 - Burnside Primary School
From the Principal
Governing Council 2016
On Tuesday evening this week we held our Annual General Meeting to reflect on the past year and look to our future. What a fabulous
turnout of parents and staff. The Annual Report emailed to all parents last week was presented and our 2016 School Council
determined. I am very pleased to announce that we have a full council again this year thanks to the many willing volunteers. At the
meeting we thanked retiring members and asked some to talk about what they had gained from participation. All agreed that their
children had benefited from their involvement.
I am pleased to announce the following roles
Chairperson: Emma Weber
Vice Chair: Amanda Brien
Secretary: Patricia Melzer
Treasurer: Oliver Roger
New and existing members offered to convene or participate on our subcommittees. Staff representatives include Tara Burgers and
Tony Probert and our Community Representative is President of Parents and Friends, Raelene Masters
Governing Council has 7 subcommittees to increase parent participation - Education, Finance, Assets, Sports, Canteen, OSHC and
Community Events. Convenors will contact existing and new members to inform you of first meeting dates and times. School leaders are
involved with each committee. The effectiveness of committee work is based on involvement by councillors, staff and parent volunteers
working productively together. Most subcommittees have 2 meetings a term and convenors report business back to Governing Council.
Please complete the form in this week’s newsletter if you are interested in participating on any of our committees or email your
details to [email protected]
Meetings generally occur at school either before school or in the evenings. I look forward to working collaboratively with all members of
Governing Council to support our school to be the best it can be.
Following our AGM, Governing Council met together and approved the date and content of our first Pupil Free Day next Friday 11th
March. Staff will have professional learning in our social emotional program Bounce Back and work with a consultant on team building
skills. Other planned dates will be discussed at our next meeting on Tuesday 22 nd March and will be advised to the whole community.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Year 7 student Ella Lee! She has been selected after an extensive singing and
dancing audition to take part in the ‘Harvest Rain production of Hairspray- The Big Fat Arena
Spectacular’. She will dance in the mass ensemble involving 500 cast members in shows on the
weekend 14-16 October at the Entertainment Centre! We wish her well with holiday workshops!
New surface for our Middle Yard and Lower Yard play space
We have been fortunate in securing corporate funding to replace the majority of our bitumen play
surfaces across the middle yard and extending down towards the gym. Construction work is being
undertaken by Camco and is scheduled to commence in the first week of the April school holidays.
The construction area will be securely fenced off, however, given the scale and scope of the works
undertaken there will be an impact on the school. Access for the many trucks coming and going from the site will be from Stuart Street
and as such the western car park adjacent to the gym will be out of action for staff car parking and out of hours users of our facilities.
We will manage playtimes for students in the most efficient way possible, in that R-2 students will be restricted to the western play
spaces and 3-7 students will access the Eastern play spaces for the duration time of weeks 1 and 2, Term 2. We will communicate more
information as the time for construction commencement draws closer, however, we have already involved our SRC in brainstorming
designs for the new acrylic surface and we plan to keep them informed and actively involved in design presentations by sports surface
contractors.

The Junior Primary and Primary SRCs are vital groups in our
school. This year we aim to strengthen student voice through
the SRCs being part of the KidsMatter framework . There will be
a social and emotional learning focus at meetings such as
respect or persistence and class meetings will focus on
these. The JP SRC will be run with Kellie Di Maria and the
Primary SRC will be led by Angela Elkin and Edward Gilmour.
There is an executive of four Year 7 students, Eve, Isabella,
George and Antucco, who will be running meetings and leading
the group. One of the first initiatives is running a poster
competition in conjunction with the KidsMatter team.
This is to highlight National Day of Action against Bullying and
Violence on March 18. Congratulations to all Semester 1 Student
Representative Council representatives.

In Biological Science, furry, feathered, scaly and wet animals abounded with all Reception classes on Tuesday 23rd
February! As a part of our Australian Curriculum Science
learning topic ‘living things have basic needs’, we invited
animal handler Jodie, from Animal Capers to school for a
hands-on, sensory experience and to show off the
character traits of several native Australian animals. During
each session, students had the chance to see a Queensland
whistling tarantula, hold a freshwater crocodile, tree frog
and a Children’s python, feed squirrel gliders, pat at a tawny frogmouth, receive a kiss on the nose from a blue
tongue lizard and tickle a tortoise.

Well, we are almost halfway through
term 1 and it’s been great to see so
many class reps organising functions for
their classes. It’s a great way to get to
know the other parents within your
child’s class and helps build on that wonderful sense of community that we have
here at Burnside. Some great ideas for
class functions are parent coffee catchups, plays at Hazelwood Park after
school, parent dinners or bottle and
plate nights, mum’s cocktails evenings or
pizza nights for parents and kids. With
Easter approaching, egg hunts at Hazelwood Park after school are a fun idea!
Consider getting a couple of classes together or even entire year levels.
Our Easter Fundraiser
is underway. Order
Kytons Bakery items
online by Wednesday
9th of March and
every order will raise
funds to support our
school. Follow the link:

Week 6 is our Scholastic Book Fair
week. The Fair is organised to allow all
students to look in our "pop up bookstore"
and enjoy a visit from our surprise Scholastic character. During this week we will have
a display of books for sale in the Library and
all students can come down to the Library in classes with their Buddies, to look
at the books and then carefully choose
TWO books to add to their take home
Wishlist. This wishlist is for parents to know
which books their child is interested in and
can then decide whether to buy a copy!
The books can be bought with cash/order
sent to school with their child or preferably
online at www.scholastic.com.au/payment.
(Please choose Book Fairs payment not
Book Club.)
The library will be open
Monday 7th and Tuesday
8th March after school
from 3.10pm until 4pm
Tuesday 8th and
Wednesday 9th March
before school from 8.30am until 9am
for parents to visit the Library with their
children. These will be the ONLY times
open for parents and computers will be
available to complete online orders with
assistance.

In week 7 a team of volunteers from
several of the local churches will be presenting a program aimed at teaching
children what Easter is all about. The
program has been written with Primary
School students in mind and is an interactive and interesting way to teach children the Easter story. These programs
have been running in our local schools
for well over 10 years now and are well
received by students and staff.
Consent forms will be issued and all children must return a signed consent form
if they would like to attend. If you have
any questions about the program I
would be happy to answer them.
If I can assist you in anyway please make
contact via the school office, by email or
drop by my office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays. I am located upstairs in
the new JP building next to Room 27.
