patriots last week joined the Carmichael
Elk’s July 4th pageant. Hot as it seemed, Fair
Oaks Boulevard was 15 degrees cooler this
year than 2013’s tar-melting 110 degrees.
Hugging the shade, many thousands of
sidewalk patriots cheered the spectacle’s
56th year. Paul Scholl was this year’s Grand
Marshal. Scholl, Carmichael Times publisher, is a community leader whose late
mother was Grand Marshal for Fairfield’s
2008 parade. Celebrating his own July 4th
birthday, Scholl said the Carmichael occasion was a “reminder from my parents never
to forget the duty to serve others.”
While Congressman Ami Bera and
Assemblyman Ken Cooley loaned VIP
presence, participants from churches and nonprofits demonstrated that, on this uniquely
American holiday, community is where the
heart is. A dozen volunteer organizations
fielded contingents of more than 50 people,
including Carmichael’s Church of God. This
organization took a trophy for best reflecting the parade theme – “America, Living the
Dream.” Kiwanis and Rotary club entries
won awards. Pre-teens in the Combined
Catholic School Band were awarded as the
parade’s only marching musicians.
Beauty queens, civic leaders, and business
folk adorned convertibles and floats. Marching
contingents included the parade’s largest unit:
a massive squad of football players, cheerleaders, and boosters from Del Campo High.
At the parade vanguard, the school’s Junior
ROTC unit marched in solid formation.
As evening temperatures dropped to the
comfortable 80s, pyrotechnics dazzled. A
record crowd of 5,000 applauded live music
and fireworks at the La Sierra Community
Center.
The July 4th event sponsors included:
Carmichael Elks, Carmichael Kiwanis,
Carmichael and Mission Oaks Park Districts
and the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce.

Job Demand Hiring Trends for Local Companies in the 3rd Quarter
SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) -
A robust market in California’s
capital city expects to add as
many new workers as it hires
for replacements within existing workforces in the 3rd quarter
of 2014. In a direct telephone
survey of Sacramento’s top
regional employers, fifty percent
(50%) say hiring is motivated
by expansion of existing workforces, and eleven percent (11%)
also attributed seasonal demands
for seeking workers in July,
September and October.
Attrition, or replacements
among the existing workforce motivated the other half
expecting to see applicants.
Pacific Staffing discovered just
twenty-nine percent (29%) of
Sacramento companies contacted
directly between May 21st and
June 11th are not hiring. While
service and manufacturing companies were driving the majority
of hiring anticipated in the third
quarter, construction firms were
almost evenly split, and just
one retail firm surveyed was not
looking for help. Also signaling
continued robust employment in
the area, not one company noted
any plans for layoffs in the next
quarter. Several firms also mention that retention of current
workers was a growing concern
and noted finding adequate numbers of qualified applicants as
another challenge.

Property Tax Roll Totals
A robust market in California’s capital city expects to add as many new workers
as it hires for replacements within existing workforces in the 3rd quarter of 2014.
Sacramento County Assessor
Kathleen Kelleher announced the
2014-15 assessment roll totals as
of July 1st. The assessed value of
the combined secured and unsecured property tax roll totals, net
of unreimbursed exemptions,
is just over $128.7 billion. This
is a 6.4%, or nearly $7.8 billion
increase over the previous year. A decrease in the property tax
rolls after July 1st is expected,
however, as outstanding assessment reviews and appeals result
in lower values. This will reduce
the amount of property tax revenue actually realized by local
schools, special districts and the
county general fund.
Each year the Assessor’s
Office reviews the values of
properties. Proposition 13 (Prop
13), passed in 1978, caps the
inflation of a property’s assessed
value at no more than 2% a year.
The annual inflation factor is
based on the CPI index and is
published by the State Board of
Equalization. The inflation factor for 2014-2015 is 1.00454%
which is well below the 2%
maximum. If the market value
of a property falls below the
property’s inflation adjusted
Prop 13 value, Proposition 8
(Prop 8), also passed in 1978,
allows a property to be temporarily reassessed at the lower
market value. The value comparison is based on a property’s
market value as of January 1 of
each year. For properties with a Prop
8 assessment, the Assessor’s
Office appraises the property
each year until the market value
of the property is equal to or
greater than the property’s inflation adjusted Prop 13 value. In
contrast to Prop 13 assessments,
the 2% inflation cap does not
apply to Prop 8 assessments.
When market values are rising,
this can result in higher than
expected increases in a property’s annual tax bill. Nevertheless,
the assessed value of a property cannot be increased above
the property’s inflation adjusted
Prop 13 value.
Effective July 2014, property
owners can utilize the “Assessed
Value Lookup” feature on the
Assessor’s website at www.
assessor.saccounty.net to preview
the assessed value of their property before tax bills are issued in
October. Property owners who
believe the 2014-2015 assessed
value of their property is higher
than market value as of January
1, 2014 should first request an
informal Prop 8 review by filing a
request online, by mail, or in person at the Assessor’s Office. In
addition, owners may file an
appeal with the Assessment
Appeals Board, an independent
body appointed by the Board
of Supervisors. The appeal filing period is July 2-December
1, 2014. Instructions for filing
an appeal can be found on the
Assessment Appeals Board web

CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Instructed by a real live
Olympian, volley ball clinics were a recent sell-out
at the La Sierra Center in Carmichael.
One of thousands of events that celebrate Olympic
Day internationally, the program immersed 115 children in the Olympian values of respect, friendship
and excellence. At 6 feet 9 inches, Carmichael-based
Gabe Gardner was a towering role model. Now a
commercial realtor, he competed in 2004 and 2008
Olympics and brought a team gold medal home from
Beijing.
Pawed by hundreds of small hands, the trophy
added much event appeal. “A gold medal is special
to everyone who sees it,” explained the star. “Few
people imagine they might ever touch one.”
The Carmichael Park District program provided
free instruction by age group and featured precision-throw contests for young participants. Winners
received volley balls signed by the superstar teacher.
San Diego-raised Gardner, 38, is among many
California athletes who annually volunteer their
skills for Olympic Day. “There are potential stars at
every clinic,” says the father of two. “It’s rewarding.
You hope to give kids inspiration to dream big and
go forward. As time passes in an athlete’s career, it’s
good to remember you were once that kid.”

Multiple Storage Units Destroyed by
Improperly Discarded Smoking Material
North Highlands, CA (MPG) - Just after 12:30
p.m., Metro Fire crews were dispatched to 4950
Watt Avenue for report of a storage unit on fire.
Crews arrived to find multiple units heavily
involved with fire. Due to the layout of the structure, the fire was spreading quickly, in multiple
directions.
Firefighters on five engines, four trucks, and
one medic from Metro Fire and Sacramento Fire
extinguished the fire, ventilated the structure
and protected adjacent units from extension. A
total of seven units were damaged by fire, while
the aggressive tactics of crews on scene saved
another 20 units and their contents.
No firefighters or civilians were injured in the
fire. Arson Investigators on scene have determined the cause to be improperly discarded
smoking material in one of the units.
Nobody was hurt in today’s fire, but possessions were still destroyed. Every year across the
country, roughly 1,000 people are killed in fires
caused by cigarettes and other smoking material.

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Dr.
Ron Chapman, director of the
California Department of Public
Health (CDPH) and state health
officer, says the number of
reportable sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) in California
increased in 2013 according to
data made public today.
“Sexually transmitted diseases
can cause major health problems for people over time,” said
Dr. Chapman. “This increase
is concerning, particularly
because STDs are preventable.”
The data show that almost
168,000 cases of chlamydia, over
38,000 cases of gonorrhea, over
3,500 cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis, almost
2,900 cases of early latent syphilis, and over 3,600 cases of late
latent syphilis were reported
in 2013, for a total of 216,000
reportable cases of STDs.
In 2013, the rates of gonorrhea and P&S syphilis (the most
infectious stages) increased substantially compared to 2012.
In 2013, the gonorrhea rate
increased 13 percent to 100.4 per
100,000 population, and the P&S
syphilis rate increased 18 percent
to 9.3 per 100,000 population. In
contrast, in 2013 the rate of chlamydia cases decreased slightly
for the first time in almost two
decades, to 439.5 per 100,000
population, Chlamydia is the
most commonly reported disease
in California.
STD rates continue to be highest in young people 15-24 years
of age, especially for females,
with over 66 percent of female
chlamydia cases and over 54 percent of female gonorrhea cases
being in this narrow age group.
Young women are the most vulnerable to infertility and other
long-term reproductive health
problems caused by STDs.
“Any sexually active person
can get an STD through unprotected sex,” said Chapman.
“They should talk with their
health care provider and ask if
testing for STDs is appropriate.”
An online directory of test sites is
available atfindstdtest.org. Many
clinics offer free tests.
Chapman pointed out that in
addition to getting tested regularly, individuals can reduce their
risk by using condoms, reducing
their number of partners, being
in a monogamous relationship or
practicing abstinence.
Profound racial disparities
persist. In 2013, the AfricanAmerican gonorrhea rate of
351.1 per 100,000 was 6.2 times
the non-Hispanic white rate of
56.9 per 100,000.
CDPH has been working
to address health disparities
in STDs. The STD Control Branch
has identified census tracts with
high numbers of gonorrhea cases
and significant racial disparities
and has focused interventions
in these areas. In addition, the
Branch is collaborating with
the Centers for Disease Control
and California’s Department of
Education to reduce the high rates
of STDs among youth through
supporting comprehensive sex
education, improving access
to sexual health services, and
helping schools build supportive environments for all youth,
including lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender students.
CDPH trains medical providers
to assure that they are assessing their patients’ risk for STDs,
screening appropriately, and
using the most effective treatments. CDPH also works closely
with local health jurisdictions to
coordinate disease prevention and
control efforts statewide, including helping identify infected
individuals and assuring that they
and their partners get treated.

Hail to the Redskins!
The U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office’s contribution to the Washington
Redskins debate is pettifogging absurdity in the service of rank politically
correct bullying.
A panel of the office’s Trademark
Trial and Appeal Board ruled in favor of
plaintiffs claiming that the Redskins name
“may disparage persons or bring them into
contempt, or disrepute,” and therefore
stripped the team of six trademarks. In
theory, the ruling will hurt the team’s
bottom line by making it impossible
for it to stop others from selling its
merchandise.
Exercising his constitutional power as
arbiter of tastefulness in sports, Senate
Majority Leader Harry Reid rallied almost
all of his Democratic colleagues a few
months ago to implore the NFL to change
the offending name, and hailed the patent
ruling as the beginning of the end of the
profound historical injustice perpetrated
by the football franchise that dare not
speak its name.
The patent board ruled this way once
before. In response to a complaint in the
1990s, the board made its decision, as it
noted this time around, “after seven years
of litigation, involving multiple discovery
and pre-trial motions.” Then, the ruling
was reversed in court -- after about another
10 years.
Certainly, opinions differ about the
appropriateness of “Redskins” as a
nickname. But some perspective: There is
no time in American history when Native
Americans have been held in higher
regard. Their nobility is celebrated in our
popular culture, and their unjust treatment
recounted in our schools. The existence
of a professional football franchise with
the same name that it has had for 80 years
-- no matter how anachronistic -- has selfevidently not caused Native Americans
to be held in contempt and disrepute.
The Washington Post called the patent
decision “a victory for tolerance.” A
bureaucratic body seeking to harm a
sports team because some people don’t
like its nickname is a strange exercise in
tolerance. The paper went on to note that

the tide is running against the Redskins
since so many people have spoken out
against them, “including the president of
the United States and half of the United
States Senate, which controls the tax
breaks enjoyed by the NFL.” Get it?
It would be too bad if something happened
to your nice football league. How tolerant.
In a section establishing the standing of
the anti-Redskins petitioners, the patent
panel made it clear they have no direct
interest except that they are offended.
Fine. Don’t be Redskins fans. Root for the
Cowboys or the Giants, the team’s NFC
East rivals. Never go to FedExField. Don’t
buy Redskins paraphernalia. If you must
support a Washington sports team, make
it one with a nickname so thoroughly
anodyne that even the Trademark Trial
and Appeal Board approves -- the Major
League Soccer team, D.C. United.
But in the 21st century, this isn’t the
American way. If something offends you,
it must be crusaded against and crushed
underfoot, using whatever instrument of
power is available. That the franchise is
holding firm against this assault is reason
to say a hearty “Hail to the Redskins!” -while we still can.

Country Club.
The event was hosted by the
Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair
Oaks, and Orangevale Chambers.
More than 250 business members
rubbed elbows with community
leaders. Local Beauty pageant
winners dressed up the event in
tiaras and evening gowns. Their
leader, Tamara Barbu-Brown,
recently stepped into the pageant
director role after the death of
Chamber supporter and pageant
legend Mary Purvis of Citrus
Heights.

I must confess to a severe case
of poverty. I never took a vow
of poverty; it just seems to have
worked out that way for me. I
am so poor the church mice have
packed their bags and moved on.
If I knew where they moved to, I
might join them.
Being poor can have its advantages, but I have yet to run across
any.
I am so poor I am not able to
pay attention, especially when
watching some television program with the Gracious Mistress
of the Parsonage. This has caused
no small problem with my wife.
We love an evening of unwinding before the TV watching
some of our favorite programs. I
must confess those programs are
getting less and less each year.
Soon we are going to have to go
back to reading books.
Together we will be watching
a program, and when I say “we,”
I do it with certain modifications.
My wife will get up and go to the
kitchen for something and when
she returns, she asks me a question, “What happened?”
I look at her with one of my
infamous quizzical looks and
respond, “Where?”
She then explains she is talking about what happened on
the TV program while she was
away. I then tell her, “I’m sorry,
I wasn’t paying attention.”
This seems to be a source of
real frustration for her.
“If you can’t afford to pay
attention,” she will say sarcastically while rolling her eyes,

I tried explaining to her that
old age is making me a little
more forgetful. She, however, is
not buying it, so there goes my
income stream.
For me, watching television is
not an obsession; it is more like a
distraction. I do not follow every
little bit on the television screen.
For me it is not a matter of life or
death, it is just a matter of recreation. I know that nothing on TV
is real. We can be in the middle
of the next program and I do not
realize that the first program has
ended. Talk about confusing!
When something does catch
my attention, boy does it have
my attention.
“Did you,” I ask my wife, “hear
that?”
Then it is role reversal in prime
time. I will not say she acts like
me, just that it comes pretty close
to it. Not quite Oscar material, but
close.
“What?” She said with a very
confused look on her face.
So I had to explain the news
story that I just happened to catch.
I do not know all of the details, I
was not paying that much attention, just that someone was fired
from their job for saying to a customer, “Have a blessed day.”
I have met many customer service people that said things that I
would want them to be fired from,
but this has never been on my
list.
My wife then asked the question I was thinking. “What is
wrong with telling someone to
have a blessed day?”
I could not figure it out. It is like
at Christmas time some places do
not want their employees to say to
the customer, “Merry Christmas.”
The reasoning is, it might offend
someone. What about us who are
offended when somebody does
not say Merry Christmas to us?
This matter of being offended can
go both ways. There should be an
equal offended person law. There
is a law for everything else.
I just would like to meet the
person who is offended by somebody saying to them, “Have a
blessed day.”
Later that evening I was watching a new crime/detective story
on TV and all of a sudden, I heard
some words that were offensive.
They were saying curse words
that I have never heard on TV
before. I have always believed
that if you have to use curse
words, it is because your vocabulary is drastically lacking in
intellectual responses to the world
around you.
Here is my dilemma. Why can
you say curse words on TV, which
everybody knows is scripted, but
you cannot say, “Have a blessed
day,” without getting fired?
If I was in business I would
want my employees to greet my
clients with a cheerful, “Have a
blessed day” and not some awful
curse words.
I was complaining about this to
a friend of mine who explained to
me that curse words on television
are considered “literary license.”
Who is paying for that license I
am wondering.
All of this has to do with the PC
syndrome in our country today.
The problem is what was PC yesterday is no longer PC today.
Who knows what tomorrow’s PC
will be.
What I cannot accept is the fact
that being crude and rude is PC
and saying something nice is not.
Have we reverted to the caveman
mentality? Is being nice is no longer acceptable behavior?
I like what David says, “Bless
the LORD, O my soul: and all
that is within me, bless his holy
name” (Psalms 103:1).
Perhaps the reason people
are offended by that phrase is
because they know that only God
has the power to bless. If I am
being blessed by God, I am going
to turn around and bless people
around me.
So, for those offended by that
phrase let me say, “Have a blessed
day. And fire me if you dare.” H

Sting in Folsom Busts
Unlicensed Contractors Carmichael Times Needs
Folsom, CA (MPG) - A procession of suspected unlicensed
contractors submitted bids for
construction work at a Folsom
home last week and walked into
the waiting hands of Contractors
State License Board (CSLB)
undercover investigators. The
undercover sting operation on
Thursday, June 26, 2014, was
conducted at a two-story home
near Folsom Lake College by
CSLB’s Statewide Investigative
Fraud Team (SWIFT) with the
help of Sacramento County
District Attorney’s Office investigators and Folsom Police
Department.
The newer home restricted the
range of projects that could be
sought for bid to exterior ones
such as painting, fencing, landscape, retaining walls, and pool
tiling.
Despite that limitation, there
was no shortage of unlicensed
operators who gave bids to
investigators who posed as homeowners. The median bid was
about $4,000, SWIFT investigators reported, with a high of
$10,000 for an exterior painting job.
In California, all home
improvement jobs valued at
$500 or more (combined labor
and material costs) must be conducted by a company or person
with a CSLB-issued license
(Business and Professions Code
section 7028).
All 11 suspects were cited
for contracting without a
license. Nine face an additional misdemeanor charge of
illegal advertising (Business
and Professions Code section
7027.1). State law requires contractors to place their license
number in all print, broadcast, and online advertisements.
Those without a license can
advertise for jobs valued at
less than $500, but the ad must
state that they are not a licensed
contractor. One of the men
showed investigators a contractor license number that did not
belong to him and was cited on
an additional charge (Business
and Professions Code section
7027.3).
About 70 percent of the suspect leads were found on the
online bulletin board craigslist.
“We have warned consumers
many times about the importance of taking an extra minute
to check CSLB’s website to
make sure the contractor has
a license in good standing if
they’re going to use craigslist
or other online bulletin boards,”
CSLB Registrar Steve Sands
said. “Licensed contractors
use craigslist and other online
sources as an advertising tool,
but so do many unlicensed and
unqualified people.”

CASE: Allen Johnson (07/01/14)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Jeff Harry, Special Assault & Child Abuse Unit
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Allen Johnson was convicted by
jury of four counts of lewd acts upon a child.
In November and December 2011, Johnson sexually abused the then 13-year-old
victim. When the mother of the victim caught Johnson in the act, she called 911 to report
the crime. Despite the mother recanting her statement soon after, the victim remained
strong and testified against her abuser in court.
Johnson faces a potential maximum sentence of 14 years in state prison. Sentencing is
set for July 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in Department 26 of the Sacramento Superior Court.
CASE: Michael Almeda & Rudy Villa (06/30/14)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Donell Slivka, Homicide Unit
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that Michael Almeda and Rudy Villa were
convicted by jury of first-degree murder. The jury also found true the special circumstance of
shooting from a moving vehicle and arming allegations.
On January 17, 2013, Almeda and Villa shot and killed Alexander Chavez in a drive-by
shooting.
Both defendants face life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is set for
August 8, 2014 in Department 17 before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
CASE: James Leoncio, Jude Leoncio, Philip Sarmiento, Juan Tenorio,
Laurence Viernes, Glyn Villegas, German Zagada & Jo Anne Keeney (06/27/14)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Sue Wilson, Consumer & Environmental
Protection Unit
District Attorney Jan Scully announced that James Leoncio, Jude Leoncio, Philip Sarmiento,
Juan Tenorio, Laurence Viernes, Glyn Villegas and German Zagada all pled to felony charges
of filing false documents with a government agency and forgery on May 13, 2014. Today, the
Honorable Kevin McCormick sentenced them each to 210 days in county jail.
Between April 2006 and July 2010, the defendants each paid co-defendant, Jo Anne Keeney,
approximately $25,000 to provide them with false academic credentials in order to obtain
registered nursing licenses. Keeney provided forged diplomas and transcripts from two different
nursing colleges in the Philippines to each of the defendants, who then filed them with the Board
of Registered Nursing in support of their applications for nursing licenses. The defendants
obtained registered nursing licenses and worked at various hospitals throughout Southern and
Central California. Keeney is believed to have returned to the Philippines and has an outstanding
warrant for her arrest in the case.
Judge McCormick noted the inherent unfairness and harm of the defendants’ actions to all
those registered nurses who have devoted the time and energy to obtain their licenses lawfully.
Deputy District Attorney Sue Wilson stated, “By circumventing the licensing requirements that
were created to protect the public, the defendants’ actions presented a tremendous risk of harm
to unsuspecting patients.”
The case was investigated by members of a task force comprised of investigators with the
Department of Consumer Affairs and federal agents.
CASE: Brian Keith Jones (06/20/14)
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Donell Slivka, Homicide Unit
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that the Honorable Marjorie Koller sentenced
Brian Keith Jones to 58 years to life in prison. On March 19, 2014, a jury convicted Jones of
first-degree murder and shooting into an occupied motor vehicle.
In December 2012, Jones shot and killed 36-year-old Duane Lomax who was in his car in the
Foothill Farms area of Sacramento County.

DISTRICT; AND ALL PERSONS INTERESTED
in the matter of the validity of Resolution No.
CP05152014-01 the parks maintenance and
recreation improvement district assessment
adopted and levied by Carmichael Recreation
and Park District on May 15, 2014. You may take
a position and contest or support the legality or
validity of the matter by appearing and filing a written
answer to the petition and complaint not later than,
August 5, 2014 which is ten (10) days or more after
the completion of the publication of this summons.
Your pleading must be in the form required by the
California Rules of Court. Your original pleading
must be filed in this Court with proper filing fees and
proof that a copy thereof was served on Plaintiffs/
Petitioners’ attorney identified below. Unless you
respond, Plaintiffs/Petitioners may apply to the Court
for the relief demanded in the complaint without any
opposition by you. Any persons who contest the
legality or validity of the matter will not be subject
to punitive action, such as wage garnishment or
seizure of their real or person property.

DETAILED SUMMARY OF THE MATTER THAT
PLAINTIFFS SEEK TO INVALIDATE:
Plaintiffs/Petitioners bring this action to compel
Respondents/Defendants the County of
Sacramento and Carmichael Recreation and
Park District to comply with Proposition 218
(Cal. Const. art. XIIID)(“Prop. 218”) and other
statutory mandates. Plaintiffs/Petitioners seek to
invalidate Respondents’ May 15, 2014 Resolution
No. CP05152014-01 establishing and levying
an assessment on all parcels in the District (the
“Assessment”) to finance park and recreation
capital improvements and maintenance costs
that generally benefit the community. Petitioners/
Plaintiffs contend that the Assessment is a special
tax that was not passed by a two-thirds (2/3) vote as
required under the California Constitution. Plaintiffs/
Petitioners seek a court order and judgment against
Defendants/Respondents compelling them to
vacate the resolution, as well as other remedies.

When it comes to buying a
house, the goal is not to live in
the Taj Mahal or have something
so expensive you end up being
“house poor.” When buying a
home, especially for first-time
homebuyers, you should look for
something nice — in a decent
area — that you can get paid off
as quickly as possible.
It’s really not a big deal if
you cheat a couple of percentage points one way or the other.
But 25 percent is a good rule of
thumb to ensure you’ll still have
money left over to live on, save
and invest!

Dear Laura,
I think the real question is how
many toxic things will you do
because you’re afraid you might
offend them. Whole life policies
are financially toxic. They’re a bad
product, and keeping it for no better reason than it might hurt their
feelings a little bit isn’t much of
a reason — especially when the
alternative is paying down debt and
getting your financial life in order.
I know this is mom and dad
we’re talking about, so you’ll have
to be nice about everything. But at
the same time, your parents have to
realize it’s your life and you make
the decisions. Try sitting down with
them and gently explaining that
while you appreciate and love them
for their generosity, you’re going
to cash it out and use it to get out
of debt. Let them know you’re not
wasting their gift, and that you’re
using it to make a positive impact
on your lives.
You’re not doing anything disrespectful, Laura. Just be very clear
about the reason and loving with
your explanation. Then, if they
chose to become a little emotional
or resentful, that’s on them. If they
get really upset and want the money
back, you can do that too. But getting your financial house in order is
much more important than hanging
on to a bad financial product you
don’t need in the first place.

Sacramento’s Jesuit High School
Robotics Team defended its
underwater championship title at
the 13th annual Marine Advanced
Technology Education (MATE)
International Remotely Operated
Vehicle (ROV) competition at
the Thunder Bay National Marine
Sanctuary in Alpena, MI. The
results were announced Saturday,
June 28, 2014.
Jesuit Robotics competed
against 28 teams representing
schools from Canada, China,
China-Hong Kong, Egypt, India,
Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia,
Norway, Russia, the United
Kingdom and the United States.
At the end of competition, Jesuit
High School (Carmichael, CA,
United States), was counted as
one of five 2014 MATE finalists
with Bauman Moscow Technical
University (Moscow, Russia),
Far Eastern Federal University
(Vladivostok, Russia), Maritime
State University (Vladivostok,
Russia), and Alexandria University
(Alexandria, Egypt.)
In addition to achieving the
overall MATE championship,
Jesuit High School also won the
“Best Poster” competition which
presented the MATE challenge
and Jesuit Robotics’ solution to
the general public. That poster
will be published in an upcoming
issue of the prestigious Journal
of Ocean Technology. Jesuit
Robotics’ 2012 MATE poster was
also published in the Journal of
Ocean Technology.
Senior Alex Aprea was awarded
the honor of “Engineering MVP,”
in recognition of his excellent
leadership in the engineering presentation of the competition.
Jesuit Robotics’ 20-member
team developed their 2014 ROV
over the course of six months to
accomplish a series of tasks and
challenges defined by the MATE
board, with a theme of exploring
the Great Lakes and preserving our
national marine heritage sites. The
mission tasks simulated exploring,
surveying and identifying a shipwreck, then conducting scientific
studies and conservation activities
around the wreck. Jesuit’s robotics
students machined nearly every
major component on the vehicle, built unique printed circuit
boards, wrote control software,
and developed sensors and fiberglass buoyancy devices. Using
structured program management
techniques, Jesuit Robotics students then practiced the many
complex and time limited tasks
required to successfully complete
the 2014 MATE challenge.
In addition to the actual mission execution, Jesuit students
wrote a 25 page technical report

There are millions of people in the U.S. who are edentulous (meaning without teeth) who struggle daily with dentures.
