News from the Principal.
ADDRESS TO Y12 GRADUANTS
Last Friday evening I had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony and dinner in Bendigo for our
current Year 12 students. It was a night of celebration that recognised the achievements of our students. I had
the privilege of addressing the gathering of special guests, parents and friends and students, and I thought it
appropriate that I share what I said with the wider community.
Wendy Tate, President of Rushworth and District Lions Club and her husband Bill; Gareth Jenkins, President of
Rushworth P-12 College Council; Parents, families and friends of Year 12 students; Staff; and last but certainly
not least tonight, the Year 12 class of 2010. I welcome you all here tonight on this very special occasion.
Some parents are here tonight because their eldest child is graduating – and this is special because it is their
first time. Equally, some parents are here tonight because their youngest is graduating – and this will be the last
time. And, of course, other parents are somewhere in between.
But everyone who is here tonight feels a great sense of pride in these young people as they celebrate one
conclusion and cross the threshold into a more adult tomorrow with all its joys and challenges.
As adult human beings, we have the capacity of hindsight and foresight.
As babies, of course, we have neither. Babies just have the big NOW with no reference to past or future. A baby
doesn’t look at the clock and say, “Oh, 3am, I’m hungry, but I’ll let mum sleep a bit longer before I cry!” No, it’s
all about ME; It’s all about NOW.
But as the years pass by and schooling starts, the ME and NOW little person gradually starts to use past
experiences, good and bad, to shape their thinking. In other words, children start to develop and use hindsight.
Then as adolescents, the neuroscientists tell us that the brain starts to change and the young person starts to
develop the capacity of foresight; that is, the capacity to see in their minds a number of different options for any
given scenario, and what might reasonably happen if they were to choose each of these options; it’s like the
ability to construct purely in the mind, what will probably happen and what the consequences might be if I
continue to do this, OR, if I make another choice will the consequences and outcomes be different.
The challenge for us all is how we use these powerful and probably uniquely human abilities of hindsight and
foresight as we tackle the challenges of decision-making in life.
What I want to leave the Year 12s with tonight is the challenge to use the capacities of hindsight and foresight
TOGETHER to generate insight.
Insight is like wisdom; Insight is being able to look squarely and honestly into the past as well as carefully into
the future; and to use both to generate wise decisions. And what does a wise decision look like? It having and
understanding of how what I do and say affects me in my life; and it is having an understanding of how what I
do and say might impact on others.
Year 12s, you have many important decisions in front of you over the next few years: decision about pathways,
relationships priorities and so much more.
You have made mistakes – learn from them. You have discovered important insights – use them.
I call on you to use all you have gained in your time at Rushworth P-12 College to be wise; to
have insight as you move into the future.
I wish you every success in life.
Thank you.

“Darwin's Battle for Australia”
On Wednesday 20th October, David and Gloria Gater came to present a copy of “Darwin’s Battle for
Australia. Volume 2” to the Librarian at Rushworth P-12 College.
This book remembers the first ever attack on Australia by an enemy force during World War 2. Mr Gater
is the Secretary of the Darwin Defenders Inc., Shepparton Branch.
The book was gratefully accepted by librarian, Laurin Martin, and will take its place in Rushworth P-12
College’s, Australian History collection, providing accurate information and photographs to Library users
on a topic that is rarely spoken about. It will be a valuable addition to the College Library.

Yr 9/10 Photography
Cameras are magic. We learnt about the history of photography. How to compose a subject.
How to ‘set up’ a set. How to create directional lighting and even what to do after you click
the button. The Yr 9/10’s produced such amazing works that we just had to share them with
you all, keep your eyes open for further works.
Today’s photos are from Harley Rose Egan - of Zack
and Sean. We hope that you all enjoy our work as much
as we enjoyed taking it.
