Abstract: Earth dam is one of the types of water barriers that are constructed to hold and save water for
later use by humans. The designing of an earth dam is a long process of site investigations and safety
calculations by the designer. Earth dams are becoming a more common type of dam in Kurdistan region
of Iraq, our government has a master plan of over one hundred earth dam projects to be constructed, and
this is due to the availability of raw materials needed for construction of the dam and the overall cost of
the dam. 1-3: Nazanin Earth Dam Project.
Nazanin dam referring to the valley name called Chami Nazanin which is located in the northern limb of
Safin anticline. This dam is designed to be a concrete-faced rock filled earth dam. It is located about 70
km to the northeast of Erbil City, which in turn is situated some 25 km east of Shaqlawa Town. The dam
is being constructed for the following purposes:
1. Storage and regulate of Nazanin valley floods. 2. Subsequent use for irrigation water supply. 3.
Municipal water supply. 4. Regional ground water recovery or recharges.
5. Developing recreation in the region. 1-4: The Re-designing of Nazanin Dam: In Our project we want
to study the Nazanin earth dam and re-design the dam the same way as it was designed by the company
working for the government or completely create a new design for the dam according to scientific
methodology and compare the results with the existing dam, and then verify the procedure of design by

Abstract: Retempering is typically done to restore concrete slump back to specified limits. The practice is know
result in some loss of strength which is proportional to the amount of water added. When retempering of concre
done only to restore slump as per ACI 116 definition, it causes a loss in compressive strength of 7 to 10 percent,
can be much higher depending on the amount of retempering water added. The practice of retempering in Kurdist
expected to be far worst as the addition of water at the jobsite is frequently done to increase slump beyond
specification's limits. In this research the effect of retempering on the strength of ready-mixed concrete (RMC) in
was investigated. The investigation covers 8 construction sites and represents 2 ready-mixed concrete (RMC) p
operating in Erbil. The addition of water was found to correlate well with the increase in slump. Also, the reducti
strength was found to be proportional to the increase in slump. In cases where controlled amount of water is add
restore the slump within the specifications limits (100 ± 25 mm), the reduction of strength was below 10%. How
when the amount of water added is not controlled, reduction of strength may be as high as 35%. Based on
findings, it is strongly recommended that the practice of adding water to RMC at the job site to restore or inc
slump should be prohibited. Super plasticizer can be used instead of water to adjust slump. This recommend
should be adopted by the Municipality of Erbil and communicated to all RMC factories operating in Erbil to abid
it.

Abstract: The research aims to answer a problem diagnosed by some teachers, who work in a private high
school in Bosnia, when they (including the researcher) repeatedly faced similar problems related to learners‟
interest level which effected their motivation negatively that finally resulted in poor participation over the years
(10 years). The teachers have stated that learners from different generations have declared that they do not feel
attracted to English classes, therefore, they do not want to participate in the tasks in the classroom or study the
materials they were introduced any longer due to the belief that they have reached a competent level. Simply,
what they have been offered are not interesting for them. They have demanded more interesting activities than
those they were instructed. This situation if needed action not taken results in less participation and finally
causes interlingual development stop.

Abstract: The implementation of technology, in particular smartboard in English grammar teaching has
changed the way grammar has been taught in lessons. Computer-assisted language teaching holds an important
place in language classrooms. Similarly, smartboard allows to present the language elements in an enjoyable
and motivating way. Unlike traditional instructions technology-based instructions are more effective in the
teaching and learning process. Today there are more opportunities to integrate computer and smartboard into
language teaching. Different skills can be taught with smartboard. When teachers use smartboard, true
excitement is brought to lessons. Learners become more attentive and motivated therefore, they pay more
attention and consequently the level of learning enhances. It is evident that technology-based instructions
contribute to the teaching and learning process. Technological-based tools are used as supplementary resources
in language teaching. Learners stand a better chance of learning the target language if technology is integrated
into learning process. Learners need more enthusiasm and attention to achieve in language learning. Traditional

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) of
science teachers having different teaching experiences about magnetic effect of electricity. This research was
carried out with the participation of 4 science teachers having different teaching years of experience within the
academic year 2010-2011.
The participants were selected according their interest and willingness to volunteer. 2 of the participants were
male and 2 of them were female. Two of the participants have bachelor‟s degree in biology and have more than
16 years of teaching experience. The other two have bachelor‟s degree in science teachıng and have about 6 - 7
years of teaching experience. Multiple case study method was used in this investigation. To analyse the
technological pedagogical content knowledge of the teachers, various assessment tools used such as: face to
face interview, video observation, field diary of observations, gathering and study of documents, questioners.
Research findings indicated that the teaching experience had positive effect on pedagogical knowledge (PK) of
the teachers. Especially the more experienced teachers used various “teaching strategies”, which is a
subcategory of TPACK, more than the less experienced teachers. However it was not possible to say the same
thing for the technological knowledge (TK) of the more experienced teachers. The teachers with less experience
had better technological integration in their lessons than the more experienced ones. During the research it
was observed that the less experienced teachers had better constructivist teaching orientations.
It was found that all of the teachers had some misconceptions about about magnetic effect of electricity while
teaching it by drawing figures. According to the findings the more experienced teachers had better “knowledge
of students”, which is also a subcategory of TPCK.
All of the teachers had used alternative assessment tools to evaluate students‟ subject knowledge, so it could be
said that all teachers are good about assessing student knowledge. The less experienced teachers have good
knowledge of curriculum about the subject magnetic effect of electricity, the more experienced teachers had
more comprehensive knowledge of curriculum.

Abstract: Construction management is one of the fields of Civil Engineering. It includes planning, analyzing,
coordinating and controlling of sequential activities in construction site. The primary goals of construction
management are to minimize the loss of time and construction costs by appropriate materials, adequate labor
and resource selection. These objectives can be achieved by current and updated continuous information flow
between participants and departments of construction organization. When information sharing doesn‟t happen
effectively and timely it results delays and additional costs at the construction projects.
Information technology has become prominent position in the development of technology. It supplies some
opportunities to construction industry. One of the important parts of information technology is geographic
information systems. It provides effective solutions to the locational based problems so they are used in many
areas. The possibilities of using GIS in construction management and new models have been developed in
various countries in the world in recent years.
In this study, using GIS in construction management is investigated and a new method in construction
management is tried to develop by use of GIS. Another aim is to supervise all data related with construction on
a single platform.
A new office block in Erbil is determined as a case study. Project drawings of the building are brought to threedimensional form in GIS and it is visualized according to the data in the schedule of construction. Database
support and visualization feature of GIS is put forward in this paper.

Abstract: The BRAINetwork team consists of both national and international researchers from both the
sciences and humanities, all of whom have the same interest in understanding the human mind. There are 3
broad research areas of interest undertaken by the BRAINetwork team, each of which uses different research
strategies and forms of validation in order to develop hypotheses and conduct research across projects.
Research Component 1, namely “Reconstruction of the neural microcircuitry of reward-controlled learning in
the rat hippocampus”, was carried out in collaboration with many international scientists including Asst. Prof.
Dr. Ali Kattan from ISHIK university (Erbil/Iraq). Dr. Kattan is a computer scientist that specializes in
computational intelligence; a field of artificial intelligence.
This component aims to construct a computational model of the reward-controlled learning and memory
pathway via neurobehavioral, neurocognitive, deep-brain neuroimaging methods [ EEG, MRI, laser imaging]
and simulation-based research into the molecular basis of neurocognitive decline. This project is essential for
developing a greater understanding of the mechanisms related to reward-controlled learning and memory
system at the molecular level.

Abstract: Diabetes Retinopathy is a progressive retinal disease that is associated with diabetic patients. It is
caused by both types I diabetes and type II diabetes. Diabetes and its associated complication, including
diabetic retinopathy (DR), have been identified as a significant growing global public health program [1].
Between 22% and 36% of people with diabetes have retinopathy, and of those one-third have vision-threatening
retinopathy [2]. Those with retinopathy will lose vision, leading to potential blindness and loss of quality of life
if not treated [3]. The screening of diabetic patients for the development of diabetic retinopathy can potentially
reduce the risk of blindness in these patients by 50%. Laser treatment can now prevent blindness in majority of
the cases. Hence, the early screening and identification of patients with diabetic retinopathy will help to prevent
loss of vision. Therefore an automated detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy in an early stage can
prevent the blindness [4].
Diabetes Retinopathy in simple words is damage to the blood vessels in the retina. A retina is a light sensitive
tissue at the back of the eye. A healthy retina is required for good vision. It is caused when blood vessels swell
and leak fluid and abnormal blood vessels are formed on the surface of the retina. Diabetic Retinopathy is not
easily noticed at first but overtime the condition gets worst and even cause vision loss. Diabetic Retinopathy is
said to affect both eyes. In this Proposal, this disease must be classified into 3 stages. The three stages are
normal, non-proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR), and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) as
shown below. Figure (1) (b-d) shows the optical image of three stages of NPDR. They are mild Diabetic
Retinopathy, moderate Diabetic Retinopathy, and severe Diabetic Retinopathy [5, 6].
Figure 1. Fundus Images (a) normal, (b) Mild DR, (c) Moderate DR, (d) Severe DR and
(e) Prolific DR
In this thesis, these three stages of diabetic retinopathy would be identified and detected using the MATLAB
software using 3 different algorithms which are Radon Transformation, Higher Order Spectra Analysis and

Abstract: In this dissertation, we have investigated the contributions of non-native attractive and repulsive
interaction, both seperately and together, on protein dynamics and folding trajectories. For his aim, we have
considered protein L and protein G both having
type native structures. These proteins were modelled by
using molecular dynamic simulation method with Langevin dynamics. Simplified coarse-grained chain
representation where every amino acid represented with only
atoms, and native-centric Go-modelling
approach has been used.
It has been found that the non-native interactions may change transition temperatures, free energy barrier height
which clarifies folding/unfolding speed, protein stabilities depending on proteins‟ amino acid content, protein
length, protein native structure and the distribution of native contacts in the native structures. On the other
hand, the effect of the non-native interactions on folding/unfolding paths were examined seperately.
Unfortunately, since our definition of transition state region was large enough, the contact frequencies
measured in the conformations observed in that region contains much more fluctuation than we have expected.
Therefore, no clear change or different signature of event ordering for folding and unfolding pathways under
the inclusion of different non-native interactions was observed. It needs further and more detailed analysis.
