Callisburg’s Cari Croninger Named
UIL Young Filmmaker State Champion
Callisburg High School senior Cari Croninger won back-to-back state titles in UIL
Division I animated film on March 2 in Austin, Texas at the Young Filmmakers
Competition.
“I have a great appreciation for all of the other contestants and acknowledge how
hard they worked. I truly appreciate seeing that work ethic and passion in other
students as they compete,” Croninger said.
“Drop the Mic,” Croninger’s 3-minute animation depicts a world of technology
human-hybrids. The “microphone” is unhappy with his situation and wishes he
could change his fate. After a sequence of events he realizes he can make changes
by voicing his own opinions instead of having others voice their opinions through
him.
“My intent with this film was to inspire students to find what they are truly good at,”
Croninger said.
Sweet, Sweet Sweepstakes
The high school band
competed in Jacksboro on
March 3 in UIL concert and
sight-reading. The band
scored a 1 in both, and along
with their 1 scored in UIL
marching, won Callisburg's
very first Sweepstakes award.

Letter From the Editor
As we near the end of the school year, we
need to reflect on the year so far. Seniors,
you're about to be totally done with
highschool and thats a huge accomplishment!
Juniors, you're almost a senior! That means
that you are almost done! Sophomores,
you're almost to your junior year, which
means you're almost done too! And lastly,
freshmen, you can finally stop walking down
the hall hearing "Hey, Freshmen!" So, savor
these last few moments because it will be
gone before you know it.

this year wondering if she could again repeat the success she enjoyed
last year.
“Seeing the competition this year allowed me to see how much I’ve
improved and makes me want to keep doing animated film,”
Croninger said.
Callisburg High School offers a solid core of subjects which also
includes many AP classes and dual credit college hours, while still
delivering a curriculum rich in electives to provide students many
opportunities to find their strengths and excel in various areas. Mrs.
Angie Smith’s animation class is one that steers students like Cari to
try something new in an effort to have students explore new career
paths and tap into their strengths.
“As a high school senior I can say that I achieved many things that
many high school students would not get the opportunity to do,”
Croninger said, “and I appreciate Callisburg ISD and the many
opportunities it has provided me--I’m excited about my future.”

Get your education on! I’m talking to all of you in high school. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Do you have a job? Are
you still in school? Are you still living with your parents? Education is required over an age range starting between five and eight
and ending somewhere between ages sixteen and eighteen, depending on the state.
The United States spends more per student on education than any other country. The average weekly income for those holding a
high school diploma or equivalent was $638 in 2011, where as a worker without a high school diploma earned an average of
$451 per week. A high school dropout will earn $200,000 less than a high school graduate over his lifetime, and almost
a million dollars less than a college graduate.
Surround yourself with people who have good influences on you, set your goals, think about your future, study,and
get your smarts on! Imagine with all your mind. Believe with all your heart. Achieve with all your might. A goal
without a plan is just a wish. Be Smart. Get your education on!
Callisburg's Great Gatsby

This year's prom theme was "The Great Gatsby." Mrs. VanHuss, and
many parents and the juniors worked very hard to make this a
memorable prom. They have had many fundraisers such as, Parents
Night Out where the parents drop off their children and the students take
care of them for the night. They also did Morenci Candle sales which was
a big success! They earned about $3000 which really helped with the
prom funds. The Junior class officers that helped Mrs. VanHuss put
prom together are, Hunter Noller; President, Christian Hernandez: Vice
President, Emma Wells; Secretary, and Treasurer; Breanna Serna.
Everyone is super excited for the 2016 prom. A big thank you to Mrs.
VanHuss and everyone that has helped put it together! Congratulations
to our 2016 Prom King and Queen Peter Harmon and Kaylie Weaver.

Chase Falgout
Chase is the April high school student of the month. She is the daughter of Tammy
and Robert Falgout. She in the top 3 percent of her class and is on the A honor roll.
She participates in NJHS, FCCLA, and Social Studies UIL. She is the captain of her
Red River volleyball team. She likes volleyball, reading, coloring, painting, and
shopping. Her favorite subject is English because she enjoys reading. Keep it up,
Chase!
Maria Rios
Maria is the April middle school student of the month. Her parents are Silvia
Suarez and Salvador Rios. She was number one in her class every year in
Mexico. She likes to read romance books and enjoys drawing. Her favorite
subject is Art, because it is very fun. Keep it up, Maria!

Softball
Varsity Lady Cats
The Callisburg Lady Cats are full of
upsets. Their season has been
filled with hard work and extreme
heart. The Lady Cats are very
excited for the playoffs and they
hope to continue to do their best.
Another huge help is Crislyn's
motivational group text! Also
congrats to the Callisburg Lady
Cats on a 6-4 win against S&S.
Kelsey Williams started off the
game with a homerun. We were
losing 4-1 for a couple innings until
Katelyn Thurman got a huge hit to
tie the game 4-4. Eranne Medford
hit an in-the-park homerun sending
in 2 runs and winning the game.
Powerlifting

The girls powerlifting team made it to Regionals which
took place on Saturday February 27, 2015. Each of
them crushed personal records and Becca set a
regional record in squat. Becca qualified for the
Women's State Powerlifting Meet in Corpus Christi. She
placed 10th at state setting two personal records by
squatting 350 lbs. with a total of 805 lbs.
Shaun Hudson and Levi Henry both set personal
records at the Men's Regional Powerlifting Meet at
Chico High School. Shaun's squat was 390 lbs. bench
was 225 lbs. deadlift was 430 lbs. and his weight total
was 1045 lbs. Levi squatted 510 lbs. benched 280 lbs.
deadlifted 430 lbs. and his total weight was 1220 lbs.

Varsity Wildcats
This season has had its ups and downs.
From beating Pilot Point on an epic
comeback, to losing a close game to
Gunter. We have continued to work
together, and have gotten better each
and every day. Even though the games
haven't gone our way, we have
competed and haven't quit fighting to get
better. The Wildcats defeated Pilot Point
8-6 with a come-from-behind win.
Callisburg beat S&S run-ruling them
10-0. Parker Huddleston, Kordan Ward,
Ian Enderby, Britten Eddleman, and
Reese Richey all had RBI's during the
game and James Williams put in work
on the mound, finishing the Rams in the
5th inning.
Baseball
Track
Congratulations to the Lady Cats in the Era track meet.
Medalists in the 4x100 were Desirae Barker, Katelyn
Thurman, Macie Satterwhite, and Ashton Yates. The Varsity
girls finished in 4th place at the Whitewright track meet.
Desirae Barker, Madelyn Smith, Macie Satterwhite and
Ashton Yates all got 3rd place in the 400 relay. Ashton
Yates finished 2nd in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash.
Emma Wells got 2nd place in high jump.

TENNIS
On Friday, March 4th the Callisburg Golf Team
participated in the Lake Kiowa Golf Tournament.
The girls team took 2nd place.
The Callisburg Tennis Team participated in
the Farmersville Tennis Tournament at
Princeton High school and competed very
well. There were 13 schools competing.

U.I.L. ACADEMICS
The CX Debate Team of Caleb Ford and Mati
Rigsby competed at the State UIL Debate
tournament and advanced to the second day
of competition where they finished tied for 9th
place. This was a great accomplishment for
one of the youngest teams in the tournament.
Congrats to Caleb and Mati!
Senior, Cari Croninger, won back-to-back

CHS Wins District Championship
The Academics spring meet for conference 3A district 10 was held April 6th at
S&S High School. Congratulations to our UIL team for bringing home the District
Championship trophy.
Schools scored in the following order:
Gunter and Pilot Point tied for 7th place with 26 points.
Pottsboro came in 6th place with 108 points
Howe scored 5th place with 110
S&S brought home 4th place with 196
Ponder was 3rd place at 199 points
Whitesboro placed 2nd place with 241 points
And CALLISBURG HIGH SCHOOL won the championship scoring 557 points.
Congratulations to the CHS UIL Academic team who finished ahead of the 2nd
place team by more than double their score.
Great job Wildcat UIL Academics!

FCCLA
All FCCLA members will be going to Grayson
County College for a campus tour on May 18,
2016.
FCCLA hosted a food drive at Christmas to benefit
local families and Visto Food bank in Gainesville.
Glenn Polk Auto in Gainesville joined in the food
drive for Visto this year.
FCCLA also had a record number of students
participate in the Cooke County Fair. There was a
total of 66 entries and they came home with Grand
Champion in the photography category and 10
other winners in their categories.
FCCLA will take a trip to the Callisburg Cemetery
on Memorial Day to place American flags on all
military graves. We have made this one of our
annual projects for FCCLA. We help to conduct a
service to honor all of our soldiers. TAPS is played
by Mr. Bonner and Mr. Cummings. This service
has always been a highlight to our members.

Mrs. Strahan's broadcast students have
recently interviewed Coach Marmon and
some of the senior basketball players,
Coach Langthorn, and softball players
Breanna Voglesong, Mackenzie Sconce,
and Kelsey Williams. They have also
made several public service
announcements, which are airing on
KPFC 91.9-89.1.
On Saturday, March 5th, Editorial,
News Writing, Feature Writing and
Headline Writing competed at the UIL
meet at Callisburg High School.
The results were:
Editorial: Jackson Goodall, 1st, Briklan
Bong, 2nd, and Tyler Garner, 6th.News
Writing: Morgan Parker, 2nd, Shaun
Hudson, 3rd, and Tyler Garner, 6th.
Feature Writing: Dominic Ladatto, 1st,

The team won 1st at the district meet
and will send six students to regional
competition. Yearbook students are working to complete the
fabulous 2016 Wildcat yearbook, complete with video. The
Prowler Staff continues to deliver an outstanding student
publication full of news and pictures and available online.

The Heifer Show team at San Antonio Livestock
Show, everyone did great!
Homesite Team headed to STATE Competition.
The FFA Officer tryouts for the 2016-2017 school
year will be April 26, 2016 in the AG building
starting at 5 p.m.
The FFA Banquet will be May 10th with dinner
starting at 5:30 p.m. Ceremony starts at 6 p.m.

Middle School News

On February 25, our Academic UIL teams
competed at Ponder Middle School. Callisburg
finished 2nd in the meet. Mr. Shelton, UIL
coordinator, said, "We are very proud of our
students this year and hope they can do even
better next year." Many students were awarded
medals and certificates. One Act Play came away
with a first place finish. Reid Pinckard was
awarded Best Actor, Haylie Dungan was All-Star
Cast. Jayden Pickett and Shalynn Blevins were
Honorable Mention. Tech Awards went to Keely
Clark and Jaymz Hemenway. Way to go,
Wildcats!
Days to Minutes

Recently, the state of Texas has issued a change of
the required amount of days to a required amount of
minutes. Starting with the 2016-17 school year,
students will have to attend 75,600 minutes each
year. Next year, our intercession days will be
nonexistent. We feel that this is a great idea! First of
all, the fact that we get out in May instead of June
allows us to feel like we have a much longer summer.
Second, we will go back to getting a week out for
Thanksgiving. Along with this, five bad weather days
are built into the calendar for next spring. Lastly, and
probably our most favorite part of this new bill, is that
our current school year will be shortened! For those
students that don't have intercession, their last day of
school is May 20. But don't worry...if you have to
attend intercession, you still get out before June!
Get those bathing suits ready! The "dog days of
summer" will be here before we know it!
Spring Break 2016

School is rapidly winding down for the
2015-16 year! Since our last edition, the 7th
graders have taken their STAAR Writing
test and the 8th graders showed their
knowledge by taking the STAAR Reading
and Math. The Middle School cheerleaders
are currently selling a variety of candy. This
fundraiser helps defray the costs of camp.
Support these girls by purchasing a candy
bar for just $1 each! Those 6th grade
students who read at least six Bluebonnet
books and the 7th and 8th graders who
read at least 7 Lone Star books attended
a fun-filled trip to Zone Action Park. They
had an amazing time playing miniature golf,
riding go-carts, and trying their skills in the
batting cages. There is only one more sixweek period left. Do your best and finish
this year STRONG!

projects in the cafeteria for all to see.
On March 24th, the Lake Kiowa Kiwanis
put on a Easter egg hunt. The eggs were
filled with tootsie rolls and smarties. The
2nd grade held their annual Easter
Bonnet Parade the same day.

performed a program called E-I-E-I
Oops! The play was about a cow that
wouldn't MOO! The costumes were
farm animals. The artwork was
amazing. The teachers and students did
an awesome job.
NED Show Visits CES

On Wednesday, March 2nd, the fanastic NED show was
performed in front of the whole school. The NED show is
a yo-yo demostration that promotes children doing their
best. NED means never give up, encourage others, and
do your best. After the show, many students felt
confident and purchased yo-yos to promote the meaning
behind the NED show.
