Schrafft Center History and Area
Schrafft's candy, founded in 1861 by W.F. Schrafft, enjoyed explosive growth during Boston's candy
boom. In 1928, Schrafft's built the nation's largest candy factory, in Charlestown, a 900,000-square-foot
behemoth that housed 1500 employees. The Schrafft name became synonymous with boxed chocolates,
and the empire grew to include ice cream and a chain of popular restaurants. Today, the Schrafft Center
on the shores of the Mystic River in Charlestown has been redeveloped for commercial uses.
Located directly behind the Schrafft Center, the HarborWalk provides a great vantage point to see the
working port in action along the Mystic River, including the loading and unloading of tankers and cargo
ships. This is also one of the best family-friendly places in Charlestown offering many opportunities to
enjoy the waterfront. Amenities on this section of the HarborWalk include benches, picnic tables, lighting,
a boat ramp, docking facilities, fishing pier, landscaping, gazebo, and HarborWalk interpretive markers
describing the history of the site. Ryan Playground, adjacent to the Schrafft Center and on the
HarborWalk, provides multi-use playing fields that are lit for nighttime games.

responsible for loss due to theft, fire or any act of vandalism.

the prevalence of confidential patient information in their work. The 2nd and 4th floor
employees are expected to empty their beige bins each night. All other materials (plastic,

Employee Parking: The “North Lot” is a lot with approximately 348 spaces and is accessible by
entering the 529 Main Street entrance to the Schrafft Center. The parking lines are painted blue to
clearly designate Partners spaces. The North lot is closer to the main building but may be subject
9
to traffic delays during commuting hours given its proximity to Sullivan Square. The “South Lot” is
within walking distance to the main entrance (approximately 10 minutes) with 340 spaces and is
accessible by the 425 Medford Street entrance or by driving through parking lots. The South lot is
farther away from the main entrance, but exits onto Medford Street away from heavier traffic
patterns. A detailed map of the Schrafft Center is posted on the Finance Intranet
http://is.partners.org/finance/doc/Schrafft%20Parking%20Lot.jpg.
To get to the 425 Medford Street South lot, continue on Main Street into Charlestown with the
Schrafft Center on your left. At the first intersection, just after the fire station to the left, you will see
Medford Street. Take a left onto Medford Street and you will see the entrance to 425 on the left

the Schrafft Center by heading to the right, passing by Delta Dental offices and Denta Quest and

th
parking access request form from MGH Police and Security, located on the 5 floor of the Schrafft

time the permit will be issued. The sticker must be placed on the driver’s side at the bottom of the
windshield.
Please note that all employees must use the Partners designated North and South lots. If The
Flatley Company finds a car with a blue parking sticker in any other parking space, the employee
will be notified and if necessary, towed.
Temporary Employees: Employees working at Partners Healthcare on a temporary basis will be
issued orange Schrafft Center parking stickers. Please see your local admin for further information.
th
Orange parking stickers will be issued by MGH Police and Security at the Schrafft Center, 5 Floor.
Visitor Parking: All Partners visitors, upon entering the 529 Main Street entrance to the Schrafft
Center will need to stop at the Flatley security booth. The security officer will direct the PHS visitor
to the designated PHS Visitor parking spaces in the North lot and present them with the temporary
parking pass to place on their vehicle dashboard. If the PHS Visitor spaces in the main North lot are
full, the security officer will instruct the visitor to park in the PHS South lot.
The PHS Visitor Parking location’s have painted reminders on the ground to clearly designate these
PHS Visitor spaces. Partners employees with a Schrafft blue parking sticker may not park in the
PHS Visitor parking spaces under any circumstances. Vehicles in these spaces with a blue parking
sticker will be subject to violation.

than 1 hour. Only Visitors at the Schrafft Center for 1 hour or less can utilize the Flatley/Schrafft
Visitor Parking located past the main entrance security booth. Flatley Security must give permission
to use these spots.
All outside visitors (couriers, vendors, etc.) should use The Flatley Company designated “Courier”
parking. Courier parking is located in the rear of the building (near the ball fields) and can be
accessed through the 529 Main Street entrance and around the “Annex” (the Fitcorp building) and
then to the left, behind the building (North side) to park in the mailroom alley.
Handicap Parking: All Handicap employees or visitors should park in the Flatley Company
designated handicap spaces, just past the security booth at the 529 Main Street entrance to the
Schrafft Center. Partners’ employees that need handicap parking should apply for a blue parking
sticker to be placed on their windshield that authorizes the handicap parker to enter and park on the
premises as a Partners’ employee. The sticker must be placed on the driver’s side at the bottom of
the windshield. An official handicap permit must also be present on the vehicle rear view
10
mirror. To obtain the blue parking sticker, please see “Process for Employee Access” explained
above.
MBTA Transportation: MBTA Orange Line: Get off at the Sullivan Square station. As you come out of
the station the Schrafft Center will be directly in front of you, about a five-minute walk and approximately
.3 miles. There is also a Flatley Schrafft Center shuttle van that will take you to the main building. You
may wait for the Schrafft Center Shuttle van that will arrive approximately every 10 minutes directly at the
bottom of the stairs as you leave the station.
Shuttle Service:
Schrafft Center Shuttle: The building management of the Schrafft Center, The Flatley Company, will
provide a direct shuttle service to and from the MBTA Orange Line Sullivan Square T stop and the
Schrafft Center main doors. The route is serviced by Local Motion shuttle buses, labeled "Schrafft
Center Shuttle," that hold either 15 or 18 passengers (see below for fleet schedule). The service will
operate Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 9:00pm, servicing each drop-off and pick-up
location approximately every 10-15 minutes, schedule is dependent on traffic. The shuttle route
begins at the Sullivan Square MBTA station (pick-up and drop-off is located at the bottom of the
stairs leading to the front doors of the station). The shuttle then continues to 529 Main Street and
picks up passengers at the pedestrian shelter. This stop is for those needing a ride to the 425
Medford Street, South Lot. The driver then continues to 465 Medford and finally, to 529 Main Street
(Schrafft Center main entrance) before returning to the Sullivan Square MBTA station to start
another rotation.
Upon returning from Sullivan Square to the Schrafft Center through the 529 Main Street entrance,
shuttle drivers will be sure to look to the Schrafft Center main entrance/stairwell area to determine if
anyone is waiting out front for a ride to the South Lot/Medford Street buildings. If passengers are
waiting, the shuttle driver will stop the van in front of the pedestrian shelter, adjacent to the main
entrance guard booth to allow these passengers to board. Ideally, employees should wait at the
pedestrian shelter, however, if there is inclement weather or another reason that employee must
wait over at the entry to the Schrafft Building, employees are asked to wait outside the Schrafft
Center main entrance doors and to signal to the shuttle drivers when they look over for waiting
passengers heading to the South Lot/Medford Street buildings.
Please note:
• The shuttle drivers are not expected to adjust their route and when leaving 529 Main Street
(Schrafft Center main entrance) their next stop is Sullivan Square MBTA station to start
another rotation.
• The shuttle will not stop and pick up employees while they are walking through the parking
lot.
Flatley Shuttle fleet schedule (effective October 1, 2014):
• (1) 15 passenger shuttle van from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• (1) 18 passenger shuttle van 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. & 4:00-6:00 p.m.
