Sir Isaac Newton defined it in 1687 for the “absolute” or dynamic viscosity as the correlation of shear stress and strain rate. The dynamic viscosity of lubricating oils as Newtonian fluids according to DIN 53 015 can be measured with the so-called “Höppler” falling-ball viscometer. ; 1 Pa s = 1 Ns/m2 10-3 Ns/m2 = 10-3 Pa s = 1 mPa s = 1 cP (Centipoises) The so-called “Ubbelohde” capillary viscometer is used for measuring the kinematic viscosity v according to DIN 51 562. = / 1 m2/s = 106 mm2/s = 106 cSt (Centistokes) ISO-VG ISO-VG refers to a rounded number value in a series of ascending numbers as defined by DIN 51 519 for the kinematic viscosity of liquid industrial lubricants. The rounded number, e.g. in ISO-VG 7 is derived from the value 6.8 mm2/s, the value of mid-point viscosity at 40 °C. A single mid-point viscosity value is approx. 50% larger/smaller than the value preceding or succeeding it. Permissible tolerance of ISO-VG is +/-10% of mid-point viscosity ISO-Viscosity Classification ISO VG2 ISO VG 3 ISO VG 5 ISO VG 7 ISO VG 10 ISO VG 15 ISO VG22 ISO VG 32 ISO VG 46 ISO VG 68 ISO VG 100 ISO VG 150 ISO VG220 ISO VG 320 ISO VG 460 ISO VG 680 ISO VG 1000 ISO VG 1500 Mid-point Viscosity at 40 °C mm2/s (cSt) 2.2 3.2 4.6 6.8 10 15 22 32 46 68 100 150 220 320 460 680 1000 1500 Limits of Kinematic Viscosity at 40 °C mm2/s (cSt) min. max. 1.98 2.42 2.88 3.52 4.14 5.06 6.12 7.48 9.00 11.0 13.5 16.5 19.8 24.2 28.8 35.2 41.4 50.6 61.2 74.8 90.0 110 135 165 198 242 288 352 414 506 612 748 900 1100 1350 1650 NLGI Classification The “National Lubricating Grease Institute” has created a classification for the consistencies of lubricating greases that was adopted as DIN 51 818 norm. The deformation properties are dependent on the type and amount of thickener, the viscosity-temperature characteristics of the base oil stock and the duration of work penetration. Depending on their worked penetration lubricating greases is divided into nine NLGI consistency classes. Labeling of greases according to DIN 51502 DIN 51502 regulates the uniform and unambiguous labeling of lubricants and lubricating points. It is designed to prevent damage from confusing lubricants. It also refers to other DIN standards, which describe and specify lubricants and their test methods in detail. The labeling regulations for lubricating greases according to DIN 51502 define location of use, base oil stock, additives, upper service temperature limits and reaction with water.
