Customers
Without Service
The Philadelphia Gas
Works (PGW)has submitted its mandated Cold
Weather Survey to the Pennsylvania Public Utility
Commission (PUC). The
report shows that 8,416 of
its residential customers
who were terminated this
calendar year are currently
without gas service, approximately the same number as last year (8,397) in
spite of the deterioration of
the economic problems of
the region.
Currently PGW has approximately 82,000customers enrolled in the Customer
Responsibility Program
(CRP), but only 23,718 customers have taken advantage of Low Income Home
Energy Assistance Program
(LIHEAP) grants. CRP is
an assistance program helps
low-income customers
manage their energy costs
through one-time grants.
The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) began
offering a Crisis “exception” grant on November 1,
for households who currently are without heat because their service is off.
Customers who wish to apply for Crisis or the Crisis
“exception” must submit
their application in person
at the Philadelphia County
Assistance Office (1348 W.
Sedgely Avenue).
PGW representatives
will be available Monday
through Friday to help customers with their applications for LIHEAP at the
company’s customer service centers from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m.: The West Philly office is at 5230 Chestnut St.
and is open on Monday.,
Tuesday,Wednesday. and
Friday. To apply, customers need to bring social security numbers and proof of
income for everyone living

“Isshoes” Owner Challenging An Icon

Change is the catchword
of the day when it comes to
politics. Change was the
clarion call of Kenyatta
Johnson who defeated longtime incumbent Harold
James; it swept away Thomas Blackwell ushering
Vanessa L. Brown in his place
and, if West Philadelphia resident Alicia Burbage has her
way, there will also be a
change in city council.
With an impressive coming out ceremony held on 60th
street early last month,
Burbage announced her intentions to run for a seat on
the city council now occupied by long term and popular incumbent Jannie
Blackwell.
Blackwell’s family has
been a staple in Philadelphia
politics for some 30 years.
Although Burbage concedes that her political battle
is an uphill challenge, she
said she wanted to give West
Philadelphians a choice.
After all, Blackwell is an
astute politician who unlike
Harold has a large loyal electoral base and unlike her stepson Thomas Blackwell, will
not make any costly missteps
during her campaigning.

House seat when he submitted faulty nomination papers.)

Sixers, Igoudala’s Back & Showin’ His Worth

Where did the Sixers’ $80
million dollar man go this
season? Apparently, he never
left.
As Andre Iguodala has
known since being drafted
here that Philadelphia’s a
tough place to play. And,
when you show your ‘true
grit’ the fans will always love
you back.
Well, his test has arrived
in the form of Kobe Bryant.
Andre Iguodala has been
a busy basketball player and
continually tries to make himself better night in and night
out.
“I’m just trying to find a
good rhythm," said Iguodala.
"I’ve taken a minor setback
today, but the guys made it
easy for me.
"I don’t think we’ve
played our best basketball yet,
but we played well enough to
win the game (against the
Hornets). The guys are really
starting to believe in themselves with an air of confidence.”

what we’ve accomplished

resilient. He’s come back here
and has done everything
we’ve asked of him. He’s
been great for us and playing
through his injuries and we’ve
been very fortunate.”

Bryant continues to mesmerize and elude defenders and
defies the laws of gravity every time he steps on the court.

him with their star defenders.

has to be aggressive, take
chances and take away
Kobe’s right side.
If the Sixers want to be
successful against the Lak-
ers, they have to be focused
and communicate openly
with their players on the floor.

lights out, but he has to create
a mindset that Bryant will be
contained and that he won’t
have a monster night on
Iggies’ home floor.
Iguodala has to stand tall
and the team’s defense has to
collectively play strong in the
fourth quarter and limit the
Lakers perimeter shooters
and keep their 'bigs' off the
boards. The team has a tall
task, but if they can get out
and run in transition off of
defensive stops, an upset
could be brewing.

Finally, The Stars Are Coming Out.
The rare sight of courtside
sighting of the Stars at the
Sixers game will definitely
increase with the Lakers visiting tonight (Friday; December 17). With the signing of
Phillies Cliff Lee and the play
of Eagles Mike Vick, the
Wells Fargo Center will be
filled with stars and athletes.

Jamie Foxx will show up.

Derrick Vaughn’s presence will be missed
for many years to come in the Parkside neighborhood where he launched his limousine and fur
enterprises.
Derrick’s entrepreneurial gifts greatly enhanced Urban Fashions Sports Center at 52nd &
Market Streets. He was the consummate gentleman. His lovely wife, Danita, is so appreciative
of the type of man her beloved Derrick was in
their relationship. His step-daughter Jeri valued
him as a good step-father and an even better
friend. Derrick was genuinely a good man and
good friend.
Derrick was a fun loving, free-hearted generous man who really contributed to the vitality
of the community. He touched many residents of
the Parkside neighborhood and helping so many
community residents in need. He
was always available with a helping hand. He was kind and generous towards all who had contact with him.
The “Celebration of his Life”
was representative of his impact
on the community. There was a
tremendous outpouring of love
and affection. Hundreds came in
throngs to share their
respect for Derrick
- the man with the
infectious smile
and open, giving
heart. He is tremendously
missed by the

with the above conditions of sale shall be
forfeited and the funds will be applied to the
Sheriff’s cost, then to any municipal claims
that the City of Philadelphia has on the property. Finally, if a balance still remains, a
Sheriff’s Distribution Policy will be ordered
and the money will be distributed accordingly.
No personal checks, drafts or promises to pay
will be accepted in lieu of cash, certified
checks, attorney’s checks or money orders
made payable to the Sheriff of Philadelphia
County.
The Sheriff reserves the right to grant further
extensions of time to settle and further reserves the right to refuse bids from bidders
who have failed to enter deposits on their bids,
failed to make settlement, or make fraudulent
bids, or any other behavior which causes disruption of the Sheriff Sale. Said bidders shall be
so refused for the sale in which said behavior
occurred and for said further period of time as
the Sheriff in his discretion shall determine.
The Sheriff will not acknowledge a deed poll to
any individual or entity using an unregistered
fictitious name and may, at his discretion,
require proof of identity of the purchaser or
the registration of fictitious names. The bid of
an unregistered fictitious name shall be forfeited as if the bidder failed to meet the terms
of sale.
All bidders are advised to remain at the sale
until after the last property is sold. The Sheriff
reserves the right to re-sell any property at

which the attorney on the writ has not appeared and is not present at the sale.

Boys Latin Gets Winning Start in N'hood Rivalry

adjust to his style of coaching basketball.
“University City was known for its great basketball
tradition," said Coach Williams. “I coached there
and I had a great time there. I’m going to have a good
time coaching here. I’m working with some good
coaches here."

& Haverford Avenue. Entering this season,
Watson is a Philadelphia Daily News Third
team All-Public selection. The junior guard
has scored over 1,200 points in his three-year
high school career.
“Not only is he a player on the court, he’s
a student of the game and a coach on the
floor,” said his father who has coached him
since the age of 4. “He not only takes over
games by scoring points, but he takes over a
game when he motivates his guys. Once he
gets them going, he supports them by telling
them to keep going.”
