Region 1 has updated the Remote Desktop server farm to Windows 2012 R2. The following steps must
be done to allow access to the new farm. Please note that the district user updating their machine must
be a member of the local Administrator group during the installation. Once the install has been
completed, the user can be removed from the Administrator group if the local tech doesn’t want to
allow this to be permanent.

2. Open a browser and go to https://remote.region1.k12.mn.us/files .
3. Click the Download link in the right hand column for Region1RDS.rdp
4. Save this file to the DESKTOP.

The new RDS servers use Classic Shell to alter the start menu. Each user should do the following steps to
fix the appearance of the start menu icon. This should only have to be done once.
1. The first time the user goes to log off, then start menu icon will look like this. Note the four
window panes.
2. Left clicking on the icon should open the settings for the Classic Start Menu. Place a checkmark
in Replace Start button then click the OK button.

then click settings. The settings should appear. Place a checkmark in Replace Start button then
click the OK button as shown in the previous step.
