Bill Kavanagh is an independent producer/director based in New York. His most
recent documentary film, “A Matter of Place,” highlights three stories of people
who faced housing discrimination in present-day New York City. They poignantly
describe these incidents, as well as their resolve to fight for justice. The film shines
a bright light on housing discrimination, one of the most shrouded civil rights issues in America. His other work includes the award-winning documentary “Brick
by Brick: A Civil Rights Story” (2007 Tupelo Film Festival premiere) and “Enemies
of War”, as well as collaborations on other documentaries and independent films.
He has a special place in his heart for Tupelo and the filmmaker-friendly nature of

Even as a child, Loretta Miles was drawn, like a moth toward light, to the only
screen in her hometown. As a 30-year veteran film exhibitor, in 2009 she realized her dream of the expansion of Salem Cinema (Salem, Oregon) from a single
screen to a beautiful art deco three screen venue where she continues to show
exceptional art, foreign and independent film. She meticulously hand selects
everything that lights her screens and is known for selecting quality over potential box office draw. Loretta is one of the original founders of Salem Film
Festival and remains Director and Lead Programmer of the annual event. Her
all-time favorite toy is a 1948 35mm Motiograph projector and she mourns the
loss of 35mm film and projection as the industry moves into the digital age.

Ron Tibbett was born in Chicago in 1941. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in English. He served in the US Marines. He met his wife Charlotte
Magnussen in Montreal and was married in 1978. He and his family (Charlotte and
daughter Christine) moved to West Point, MS, in 1994. He always had an active interest in film and shot his first film “Swept Off My Feet” in West Point. Because there were
no festivals in Mississippi to screen the film, he started the Magnolia Independent Film
Festival, the first of its kind in Mississippi. He loved sharing his craft, enthusiasm and
love of film with all but especially young minds. He encouraged many to follow their
dreams in film. We miss him dearly.
THE ELVIN WHITESIDES DIRECTOR’S AWARD
The Elvin Whitesides Award
is presented this year in memory of
Elvin Whitesides who served as a mentor to
the festival as well as a judge.
Sponsored by his fellow classmates of
Tupelo High School Class of ’72
Elvin Whitesides, a native of Tupelo, came to his love of film as a boy, sitting beside his father in the projection booth of the Lyric Theatre, screening years of first-run Hollywood features. That formative experience led to
a BFA in Theatre from the University of Southern Mississippi, professional
training in both New York and Los Angeles, and managing the Bing Theatre at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for over 20 years. Throughout his career, Elvin continued to make films, writing, performing, producing, directing, until his
untimely death in May 2010. A two-time judge at
the Tupelo Film Festival, 2011 marks the inaugural Elvin Whitesides Director’s Award, a tribute
to his talent for guiding and inspiring countless
casts and crews toward a common creative goal
through the magic of movies.
Samara Whitesides will be in attendance to

CIGARETTES BURN FASTER IN THE SUN
Writer/Director: Arbi Lawang
Patrick, Lea and Max are a gang of young misfits with a taste for trouble. On a dull autumn’s day, they have nothing to entertain them but their imaginations. They set out
into the streets to find some fun but instead, find a corpse. ‘Cigarettes Burn Faster In The
Sun’ is the grad film written and directed by Arbi Lawang from Melbourne, Australia.
UNCONDITIONAL
Writer(s)/Directe(s)/Produce(s): Rhonda Chan Soo, Hanna Teachey, and Kelly McKenna
Unconditional explores how the lack of second-parent adoption laws harm children
and parents in same-sex families. A second-parent adoption, for an unmarried couple,
allows a ‘second parent’ to adopt their partner’s biological or adoptive child without
the legal parent losing their parental rights. The film follows two North Carolina families as they navigate the legal system and fight to obtain legal parental-child bonds.
Watch them rise up and persevere against a legal system that fails to protect them.

“Blues Clues” revolutionized children’s television in the late 1990’s and capitalized on children’s love of mystery. “Dora the Explorer” and
its spin-off, “Diego” expanded our universe to
the Spanish speaking population and focused
on adventure and animal wildlife. “Jake’s Safari” combines the successful elements of “Blues
Clues,” “Dora …” and “Diego and then elevates
the packaging to a higher plane. Cultivating
live action with 3-D animation, “Jake’s Safari”
utilizes a multi-ethnic cast, loveable animated
characters, global travel, and futuristic technology
– all designed to create a truly unique television
experience. It’s mystery, adventure, the magic of
wildlife – all on “Jake’s Safari inviting its young
viewers to go on an adventure that no other TV
show has prior undertaken. We want to be the social educational partner of our youth to spur curiosity, discovery and lots of fun. Our mission is

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Mr. Don Tingle is the Workshop Director for the

various aspects of low budget and amateur moviemaking. He leads multiple
workshops for the North Alabama community includDon_Tingle_Photoing
a monthly Filmmakers Workshop focused on technical aspects of amateur

for Kids”. Don has presented seminars and workshops at Roger Ebert’s Film

the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, the Gadsden Public Library, the
Southern Shorts Film Festival, and for various community programs. Don
has served as host and moderator for panel discussions at film festivals
and interviewed actors, screenwriters and filmmakers He organizes and
produces the Huntsville based “Rocket City Short Film Festival,” a showcase
for local and regionally produced short films, held in October of each year.
A workshop designed for filmmakers and performers who plan upon pursuing a higher education
track that will lead them to potential professional careers in the entertainment industry, on “both
sides of a camera.” Achieving any level of success in the entertainment business requires hard
work, dedication, detailed study and perseverance regardless of one’s particular concentration–
acting, cinematography, editing, directing, screenwriting or producing. The biggest mistake
most unproven actors and filmmakers make in going pro is moving to Hollywood completely
unprepared. They lack sufficient education and training in order to compete for jobs with
long-time industry professionals who already are working in the “Biz”. They have little or no
credentials (union memberships) or credits (IMDB) much less any visual means to display skills
(demo reels). This powerful workshop is packed with tips and tools that are vital for up-andcoming actors and filmmakers who plan upon continuing their education at a collegiate level.
• Why MUST you have credits, a demo reel, and agency representation before you hit
Hollywood?
• What are the four most important questions you should ask when considering colleges that
offer degree programs in filmmaking and/or drama?
• What colleges in the Southeast offer degree programs in film production and/or drama?
• How do you decide what concentration of filmmaking to pursue?
• Why should you attend a summer pre-college filmmaking or acting program?
• What is “Right-to-Work” and why is it so important to your going pro?
Sam Dalton is an accomplished two-time Regional Emmy, a two-time Telly, and a Parents Choice
Award winning motion picture and television actor, writer, director and producer with over
35 years of experience on both sides of a camera. He is a distinguished educator and serves
as a Visiting Professor of Film at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film in Nashville, TN. He is
Director of a series of consecutive pre-college filmmaking programs each summer, first for the
Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts, followed by the Watkins Summer Pre-College Film
Track, and the Presser Performing Arts Center Film Track Program in Mexico, MO. Sam’s oncamera acting credits encompass a wide
variety of motion picture and television
roles including Coach Gurntz in the original
motion picture “Footloose”, a two-year stint
on the NBC Daytime Series “Santa Barbara”,
and numerous co-starring roles in network
television movies of the week, primetime dramas, and situation comedies.

This workshop will teach basics of cinematography for the beginner,
hobbyist or penny pinching filmmaker. The quality of your movie depends
less on what camera you use than how you use it. The cinematographer
decides how to shoot the film – what shots to get, where to put and how
to move the camera, how much light is needed, what picture composition
(framing) to use, what camera settings to use or what filters to add.
Whether you are shooting with a cell phone, “point and shoot” camera,
consumer video camera, or DSLR, this workshop will show you some
skills, techniques and tools that will make you a better cinematographer.

GOOD ROCKIN’ TONIGHT – THE LEGEND OF SUN RECORDS
TUPELO, MISSISSIPPI
Historians may never agree about where
and when rock ‘n roll was born, but all do
agree that Sam Phillips began a revolution
and spawned a legacy that has become
one of America’s true cultural touchstones.
Fifty years later, that sound from Memphis
has an influence that will continue as long
as music does. Original Sun artists Elvis
Presley, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash are
reprised by such performers as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Live
and Third Eye Blind. The genera-tions are
spanned in a moving rendition of “Lonely
Weekends” with Jerry Lee Lewis and Matchbox Twenty. A reunion of old Mississippi
Delta musicians is the compelling spine and
authenticity of this film. (Film 120 minutes)

West of Shake Rag is a Tupelo-based improvisational team founded
in 2009. They have been performing regularly in Tupelo for several
years, but have put together shows and classes in a variety of places including Chicago, IL where they received training and were recognized
as one of the top five rising improv teams in the world. Though still a
young team, West of Shake Rag has made a name for themselves with
their energetic performances and innovation with games and formats.
None of their material is scripted so the team offers viewers a completely unique show based on audience suggestion at every performance.
