most spectacular coastlines, mountains and rainforests. Visitors' most commonly regret not
having allowed enough time to savour the drive, take a photograph, stop for a short walk, or
to just kick back, relax and enjoy the West Coast's renowned hospitality.
Many visitors will only ever experience a region like the West Coast once in their lifetime.
The roads are all sealed and in excellent condition but don't underestimate the drive times.
The times listed on the chart are only estimated, and in reality, you should allow longer to
explore the region.
The West Coast of the Southern Alps is the longest region in New Zealand - 600km (the
equivalent distance of Auckland to Wellington). There are literally thousands of experiences
and activities available to the discerning visitor, and trying to 'do it' in a few days feels rushed.
Many visitors return for a week or longer on their second visit, having learned that a few days
can only skim the surface of all that is: the W est C oast of the S outhern A lps .

West Coast
West Coast of the
Southern Alps is an
adventure and outdoor
wonderland. There are
beach and forest walks to
suit all ages and abilities,
eco tourism experiences,
caving, rafting, canoeing
and kayaking; surfing,
jet boating, jet skiing,
glacier walks, scenic
flights, mountain biking,
horse treks, river and sea
fishing, gold panning and
exploring the old gold
mines and ghost towns, to
name but a few.
the
The region is also
becoming increasingly
famous for its world class
artists and craftspeople.
The dramatic landscapes
attract a growing
number of national and
international artists, who
value a lifestyle hard to
find in more populated
regions. Many artists
make extensive use of
the great variety of local
materials (driftwood, rare
minerals, natural fibres,
etc), and have evolved
distinctive styles inspired
by the region’s impressive
natural environment.
For travellers who are just
passing through, local arts
are showcased in a great
many galleries, museums,
craft shops and cafés.
all seasons
The peak tourism season on the West Coast of the Southern Alps runs from mid October
to the end of April. Pre-booking accommodation and activities is recommended during
this period.
During winter months the warmer currents of the Tasman Sea make the West Coast's
temperatures relatively mild compared to the rest of the South Island.
Outside of the summer months there are few visitors, making it an ideal holiday time for
visitors who want to really experience the local culture and explore the region in depth.
06
Pioneer Heartland
West Coast of the Southern
Alps has always been New
Zealand's pioneer frontier - its
'CULTURAL HEARTLAND'. And
like other such places around the
world, it has generated its fair
share of legends and stories.
the
The region has a population
of only 33,000 'COASTERS', a
handle synonymous with straighttalking, down-to-earth hospitality.
Geographically isolated from
the rest of New Zealand by the
Southern Alps, COASTERS have
developed a distinctive personality
and culture of their own. Oldfashioned pioneering values like
self-reliance and supporting your
neighbour are as strong today as
they were 100+ years ago.
The human history of the West
Coast of the Southern Alps is
particularly rich. First to arrive
were Maori, seeking the sacred
pounamu (nephrite jade/
greenstone) at its sole New
Zealand source. Later, the last
of the world's great gold-rushes
attracted immigrants from every
corner of the world, many who put
down roots and started farming,
forestry, fishing and tourism
businesses.
Today you'll find museums and
historic buildings, fine food, a
range of accommodation, and firstclass local guides wanting to share
the West Coast's natural, cultural
and adventure experiences for
your edification and enjoyment.
land BEFORE TIME
Nature lovers will discover the fascinating wildlife abundant and accessible on the West
Coast of the Southern Alps, with opportunities to see fur seal colonies, kiwi, kotuku (the
white heron), penguins, dolphins, and a great variety of fauna in their natural, unspoiled
habitat. The region bounds an impressive range of 'mountain to sea' ecosystems:
Unique alpine flora; vast podacarp forests; diverse wetlands; temperate coastal forests
flourished with flowering rata, kowhai and nikau palms; and much more.
Many parts of the region are time capsules, showing us what New Zealand looked like
prior to the arrival of the first Maori a thousand years ago. Within this 600 kilometre long
swathe of Eden - no wider than 70 kilometres at any point - the mountains appear closer,
the lakes clearer, the rivers larger and faster, and the forests lusher than anywhere else
in the country.
West Coast of the Southern Alps boasts the South West New Zealand World Heritage
Area - Te Wahi Pounamu, and five of New Zealand's fourteen national parks: Kahurangi,
Paparoa, Arthur's Pass, Westland and Mt. Aspiring. Among the innumerable scenic
treasures are New Zealand's highest mountains, lowest glaciers, finest lowland forests,
tallest trees, wildest beaches, longest caves and most natural rivers. Rudyard Kipling
described the region as "the last, loneliest, loveliest, exquisite apart."

The Bay House was originally a family bach built in 1929, it became the local surf
club in the 70’s, was opened as a café in 1995 and now fourteen years on is firmly
established as an iconic West Coast restaurant. Located on a rocky peninsula
surrounded by the mighty Tasman Sea there is hardly a better place on the wild
West Coast to stop and take some time out from your travels.
Sit back and relax on the al-fresco deck over-looking the bay, watch the surf roll
in and indulge yourself in the award winning fare from owner and head chef Emily
Lucas’ kitchen. The menu is created using local and NZ produce infused with
the exotic flavours of the Pacific Rim, complemented with an extensive NZ wine

Established during the gold rush
of the late 1860s, Reefton has
preserved much of the character
and charm of its historic past.
The township and Victoria
Conservation
park
feature
some of the West Coast's more
memorable historic sites.
Reefton was the first town in
the Southern Hemisphere to
reticulate its own electricity.
The pace of life in Reefton is relaxed even in the peak tourist season. The area is
known for its diverse beech forests and variety of bird-life, including tuis, bellbirds,
kea, kaka, and parakeets. In some places you can hear the nighttime calls of the
nocturnal kiwi.
Reefton township is situated in the heart of the New Zealand's largest conservation
park - the Victoria Conservation Park. Maruia Springs, famous for its natural thermal
pools, lies 50 minutes to the east on the Lewis Pass Road. Maruia Springs area has
quality accommodation on offer, a variety of walking tracks, pristine rivers and
excellent trout fishing.
Reefton has a good range of visitor
amenities
including
accommodation,
guided tours, fishing and hunting, retail,
banking and service stations.
Reefton also boasts a fine selection of
traditional and modern cafés, restaurants
and pubs

Punakaiki is home for the
internationally recognized
and iconic Pancake Rocks
and Blowholes. Located in
the heart of the Paparoa
National Park and on the
Coast Road – voted one of
the top 10 most spectacular
scenic drives in the world
– visitors are often
unaware of the great
number of experiences
on offer: Guided beach,
forest and mountain
walks, family canoeing,
wildlife watching,
horse trekking, surfing,
gemstone hunting, caving
and climbing, historic
site-seeing, or simple
rest and relaxation.
There are taverns, cafés,
restaurants, a great range
of accommodation, and
a vibrant arts and crafts
community nestled in
the lush bush along the
shores of the Tasman Sea.
Punakaiki and Barrytown
are well served by
passenger bus routes
from the north and
south with frequent
services available from
Greymouth. The road is
well sealed all the way.
To allow time to stop
and enjoy some of the
walks and stunning views
we recommend allowing
considerably more time
to drive the route than
recommended by most
guide books. You will
be disappointed if you
don't. Visitors should be
aware that Punakaiki has
no service stations (for
motoring needs) or banks.

Shantytown visitors have the opportunity to step back in time and experience
aspects of West Coast New Zealand’s history — from the 1860’s gold rush,
through to the arrival of steam and sawmilling in the area.
Peacefully situated amongst regenerating rainforest, the village area is themed
as a 19th century gold rush town. 30 buildings characteristic of the era each tell
a story through interpretation and display. Visitors wander at leisure, linger at
places of interest and stop in for food and refreshment at Everybody’s Tearooms,
Beehive Store or Golden Nugget Saloon. There is a well stocked gift shop onsite,
and visitors can have an old time portrait taken as a momento of their visit.
the shantytown experience includes:
• Riding the steam train into native bush along the historic Infants Creek tramway
• Engaging in a unique bush sawmill experience
• Exploring the historic gold claim area, and
• Learning the art of gold panning | a guaranteed ‘strike’ for all participants!

Located by the sea, at
the mouth of the Hokitika
River, Hokitika is the
commercial and retail hub
of the Westland District.
It offers all of the services
you would expect to find
in an urban centre and has
the West Coast's busiest
airport with Air New
Zealand flying several times
a day between Hokitika and
Christchurch.
Inspired by its local
landscapes and raw
materials (jade, gold,
ruby rock, driftwood,
native timbers, clay, shell,
bone and fibres) it is no
wonder that Hokitika is
the chosen home of craft
artists, sculptors, jewellers,
painters and poets.
Visitors can also enjoy a
wide variety of activities,
including: Rafting, river
cruising, kayaking, scenic
flights, walking - from bush
to lakeside to the Tasman
Sea, museums and theatre,
a selection of fine dining
cafés and restaurants, and
quality accommodation.
For visitors travelling in
March, the annual Hokitika
Wildfoods Festival is a 'must
do' experience.
An easy 25 minute drive
south of Hokitika is Ross,
a small town with a rich
gold mining heritage. Local
guides love to introduce
visitors to the town and its
colourful history. You can
still pan for gold just the
way the old miners did.
Ross has a general store
and a service station.

Some 140 Glaciers flow from
the Southern Alps, however,
only two - Franz Josef and
Fox Glaciers - penetrate as far
as the lower rainforests. Few
sights equal the spectacle
of these giant tongues of
ice grinding down through
temperate rainforest to within
250 metres above sea level.
Visitors are often surprised
to find such a mild climate in
Franz Josef given the Glacier
and the Southern Alps highest
peaks are mere kilometres
from the township.
Guiding companies offer
guided glacier walks and
climbing experiences to suit
all ages and abilities. Helihikes and scenic flights - with
or without snow landings - are
also on offer. Other activities
include a raft of rafting
experiences, white heron
(Kotuku) sanctuary tours,
rainforest and coastal walks.
Franz Josef township
offers a range of quality
accommodation, cafés, arts
and craft retail, a general
store and service station.
The Glacier Country is a
popular visitor destination;
we recommend booking
ahead in the peak of the
summer season (from Dec Feb). Whataroa - the northern
gateway to the Glaciers - is
a small village that offers
accommodation, a general
store and service station. It
is also the departure point
for guided tours to the
magnificent white heron
(Kotuku) breeding colony

Fox Glacier township
offers a more intimate 'village'
experience than its bigger
neighbour, Franz Josef.
Tucked into the rainforest-clad
foothills of the Southern Alps,
the township offers a range of
quality accommodation, cafés,
a general store and service
station.
the
Fox Glacier offers a different
style of glacier experience
than Franz Josef, and visitors
are increasingly booking
activities on both glaciers
during their visit to Glacier
Country. Local companies
provide access to Fox Glacier
via guided walks, heli-hiking
and scenic flights (with or
without snow landings)
Located 6km west of Fox
Glacier is the internationally
renowned Lake Matheson - the
'mirror lake' - where Aorangi /
Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman
are stunningly reflected in its
dark, glassy surface. Further
down the valley, through the
rimu rainforests and on the
shores of the Tasman Sea, lies
Gillespies Beach, an original
gold mining settlement.
30 minutes south of Fox
Glacier, with the Southern
Alps towering in the
background, is Bruce Bay;
a picturesque sandy bay
surrounded by ancient
rimu forests. The legendary
Polynesian explorer Maui is
said to have landed here first.
A cultural heritage which the
local runanga (descendants of
the first Maori settlers) have
honoured with the building
of a marae (traditional Maori
meeting house).

The region early Maori called Te Tai O Poutini was valued by them for its precious
pounamu jade. Pakeha (non-Maori) later came in search of other rich resources such as
gold, coal and timber. Many of the historic features they left are accessible today by
road or on walks of varying length.
Those listed here are easily found, well marked and in many cases interpreted via
information panels, brochures and books. In addition there are numerous roadside
plaques and stopping places where information panels have historic content. Even
the old cemeteries have their stories to tell, while the Taramakau road /rail bridge is
something to be experienced.
