Rafiqul Alam, Bangladesh/Republic of Korea It gives me much pleasure to evaluate the distance learning ecourse “Good Research Practice” after it‟s successful completion. Though this is my first experience to participate in a distance learning e-course, I enjoyed the course very much. I would like to thank the Course Coordinator Professor Karel Hruska and other members of the committee for designing the Lesson very nicely for the Course. The course has been designed with a total of 21 lessons which are well equipped with resources and information taking into consideration the interests of a wide range of participants from the novices to the experienced researchers/teachers. The most excellent feature of the course is that it has an option to start from any lesson so that a participant can go through the course according to his or her own preference. In my case, initially I was afraid whether I could complete the course in my busy schedule. But once I started, I was amazed to see the links and guidelines provided in each lesson which were sufficient to prepare the assignments. Sometimes, the links provided in the lessons made me so enthusiastic that I continuously I browsed and studied those and did not sleep several nights during the course. As an academician I gained a lot from the course. The assignments were also well organized with very nice questionnaires to evaluate the depth of knowledge of the participants which they gained from the respective lessons. Another excellent feature of the course is that the bonus points awarded to the participants for their best assignments which draws extra attention, encourages and makes the participants more enthusiastic. The course introduces me with a plenty of resources of knowledge and database through the links provided in the lessons. Obviously, the knowledge and skill I acquired through this course have upgraded level of understanding on my major subject as an academician and researcher. I have been directly benefited from the lessons 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 19. However, I have a few comments on the course over all. It seems to me that the course provides more attention on microbiology, immunology, zoonosis, food safety and so on, whereas a little to no resources on the clinical subjects such as theriogenology, surgery, diagnostic imaging, pharmacology, medicine etc. I think, there should have at least 1 or 2 lessons on these. At the initiation, a pre-appraisal of the knowledge of the participants on the course can be evaluated through 50 to 100 multiple or objective type of questions covering the whole lessons. Another similar test can be taken for post-appraisal of the knowledge of the participants‟ who have successfully completed the course. The results of these two tests can be compared to check the actual up gradation of knowledge of the participants. Considering all the things together, I would like say that this is an excellent e-course for the students, academicians and researchers. Once again, I would like to extend my thankful gratitude to the Course Coordinator, Professor Karel Hruska, who continuously helps the participants to complete the course and make the course successful. I do hope and wish the “Good Research Practice” e-course will continue to play a significant role to upgrade the standard of scientific research in the 21st Century. I would like to strongly recommend this course for the students, academicians, researchers as an excellent distance learning e-course to upgrade their knowledge and level of understanding on their major fields. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 11 Bolajoko Ajoke Aina, Nigeria I am Dr Aina, a Senior Lecturer in the Dept of Clinical Pharmacy and Biopharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lagos. I had my first degree in pharmacy in 1982, Masters in 1985 and PhD in 2005. Another Masters in Public Health in 2007. I teach, design and supervise students projects both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My work does not entail much of laboratory work but field and practice oriented. The course has opened my eyes to a lot of information and sites online even with my years of experience. This is verified by the percentage of sites that I have not been exposed to in lesson 20. Also from this course I confirmed the issue of there is continuity in learning. I realised that at times you may be reading something but the interpretation will be different from what you are actually reading e.g. when you pointed out the correction in Ex 4.8, I went back to read the exercise again and realised that I didn‟t connect the exercise with the instruction given for 4.6 and 4.7. I have learnt how to use PubMed better than before and also understand it more than before. Thank you very much for giving me opportunity to participate in the course. Surely I will be going back to the different lessons to help me in my teaching and research. The course actually stressed me in terms of time but it has been worth the time spent. A picture taken with staff of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) during a short course in drug information and drug policy (Madison, Wisconsin, USA, July 2007) CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 12 Olomide Adedoku Odeyemi, Nigeria/Malaysia School of Biosciences and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, National University of Malaysia, Bangi, Malaysia My name is Olumide A ODEYEMI Nigerian and international postgraduate student at School of Biosciences and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, National University of Malaysia. First and foremost, I will like to appreciate the golden opportunity given to me by the course manager to partake in this course. I registered the very day I got to know about the course which was at the very end of the course. However, determination, dedication and focus actually sustained me through. Submitting twenty one assignments at close range was a herculean task yet I tried my best. All the lessons were of great importance as far as knowledge is concern. Although some of the contents were familiar yet the served as refresher lessons. Not to mention the lessons that are entirely new to me.The new ones are lesson 2, 3 (e-guide in video format), 5,6,13,15,16,18 and 20 (some of the websites). Lesson 1: Communication: an important way to successful collaboration: This was a very interesting lesson. In fact I suggest future participants should make it the first lesson to read, digest and submit because some of the information therein was quite helpful in answering the other assignments especially aspect of email automatic signature and other means of communication mentioned in the attached articles. Lesson 2: Biomedical Technology, Epidemiology and Food Safety Global Network CENTAUR. The title actually fascinates me because it carries my area of research-epidemiology, biomedical technology and food safety. This encouraged me to dig deep into the site. It was new to me as far as this course was concerned. Certain topics were quite educative in the website. Like the Bulletin, Written by /for e.t.c. As at the time of writing this evaluation, I received information alert form the course manager on latest information for members of CENTAUR. More grease to your elbow. Lesson 3: Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills is a helpful tool in teaching microbiology to beginners who are just learning about the course. Having it in video format that is easily downloaded makes it unique. I strongly recommend to all microbiologists. Lesson 4: Good Laboratory Practice. Although this was not new to me but I gained immensely from the literatures/articles attached. There cannot be any good experimental results if good laboratory and research practices are not in place. Every researcher should have a research/lab notebook needed for day to day research activity. I prefer to call it research notebook than lab notebook due to its immense values. One of the articles went further to explain how this book can be utilized to the maximum. Before now, I thought some little-little details are not to be recorded while performing experiment but I was proved wrong. I strongly rate all but one or two lessons 5.Oh, time and space will not permit to write about each of the lessons. Is it lessons 6, 13,15,16,18 and 20 that I should forget or the course manager who will answer every question asked and demands for “try again” where needed?.Prof Hruska thanks for the job well done. You are a rare gem. It is still surprising to me how you manage to cope with 105 participants and your research career, year in year out. Conclusively, GRP has imparted to my academic life and helping to bring the best out of me in my chosen area of research. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 13 Adamu Ahmad Kaikabo, Nigeria On course evaluation, I will say the course was interesting. I have learned a lot, my reading has improved and I have got a lot of skills necessary for good research practice. I appreciated it and would like to thank you for organizing the course. On my personal introduction; I am with the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, Nigeria. I am a veterinarian who has interest on research and vaccine development. Other areas of keen interest are molecular epidemiology of zoonotic organisms particularly "Mycobacterium". Using current molecular tools in research is fascinating. I would apply these in research to improve a public health. I have a strong liking for writing, reading and research. I would always be available for collaboration in research on area of my research interest and any area where my capabilities may be useful. I am an intending Doctoral candidate in 2011. General comments by the Course Manager A short reply to the suggestion regarding clinical issues in GRP courses: The participants of the GRP courses are not only from different parts of the world, but from different biological and biomedical fields. Only a small number of participants have been educated as veterinarians. The courses are of greater interest to food scientists, pharmacologists, medical doctors, laboratory specialists, researchers from the fields of microbiology, clinical chemistry, environmental sciences etc. Moreover, the participants include undergraduate or graduate students, postdocs, researchers, but also people holding different positions in veterinary and food safety administrations. The GRP course has been successfully completed by university teachers from pre-clinical disciplines or by the chiefs of departments at the Ministry of Health or Ministry of Agriculture. Hence, the GRP e-courses must be generally oriented and focused on sources of information, available free of charge on internet. Data evaluation, manuscript preparation, understanding of instructions, improved skills in computer assisted precision at every step, quick replies, amendments of errors and first of all a responsible approach to every task not as a duty, but as a result of self-motivation should encourage the participants to seek out more information relevant to their different specific needs. The world of education and knowledge dissemination is open for an unlimited number of various e-courses which could be a valuable supplement to classical education. Unfortunately, closed lecture rooms, the repetition of lectures unchanged for years and the utilisation of textbooks written by the teachers themselves are considered by many teachers as the only possible teaching tools while financial considerations also hold a disproportionately large influence. In appreciation ODOL, Malaysia One thing I really appreciate you for most is your relentless effort to make sure participants really understand the lesson. Your last comment has helped me immensely especially on lesson. This e course is of unquantifiable importance to me. Although I joined the course at a die minute - January 26, but through determination, dedication and focus, I was able to partake in the course to a reasonable level. Thanks for the privilege given to me. Comments on .............. KRAJ, Czech Republic The entire database is news to me. I've never encountered anything like it. If I had to talk about new information, so I would definitely not enough for 250 words. I like the transparent content and the division into groups, which enables rapid orientation in such a quantity of information, which speeds up work and saves time, which is working very little. Other databases also offer CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 14 plenty of information, but they are quite often confusing and chaotic, but I'm not talking about well-known databases. I believe that this site will certainly serve me as a valuable source of information during the study, the development of the dissertation, and my next life. I hope that time will not be abolished, as it sometimes gets it, because it would be a shame. Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health MANA, Kenya The lecture is well arranged and motivating. It has represented all aspects concerning public health. It serves as knowledge reservoir for many researchers, tutors and health science students. DANI, Nigeria I am really fulfilled with this lesson. I went through Biostatistics an area I have always had difficulty and it assisted me so much in clearing some of the confusions I had with data presentation and analysis. I analyzed the data I got from my MSc. Project after this lesson. The lessons were short and specific with illustrations to help in simple understanding. Supercourse has a lot of information that I must continue to visit even after this course. Lesson 08 PubMed database NASU, Kenya Am glad to have got access to the databases. I will not only gain in terms of knowledge but in research as well. The lecture is fast, easy to access and vast with information. I got to revisit all I had learnt in a semester just within the touch of a button. Kind request, i hope i shall be able to access the sites at the completion of the program or else i shall be not only be disappointed but also deprived of knowledge. Thank you very much. Lesson 09 MyNCBI JAPE, Australia I have only just recently signed up to MyNCBI from instruction from the GRP course. I have found that its ability to track my recent activity has proven useful when I needed to go back and retrieve some papers I was looking at. I have also discovered the usefulness of the saved search tool, since I perform similar searches repeatedly it is useful for me to have these searches pre-set so that I do not have to re-search every time I need to search. Lesson 13 Journal of Visualized Experiments ODOL, Malaysia Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is of no parallel. I only got to know about this valuable journal via GRP e course. I gained immensely from it and I can see it as the power of scientific innovation in the science community. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 15 ISSUE 16, 2011-02-20 Comments on .............. Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills ODOL, Malaysia Microeguide is a job well done by the authors.I suggest one of such should exist for molecular biology techniques Recommended reading shows an example from open sources how an instruction can be presented. We are not authorized to give an advice to the authors what should be done. However, anybody can prepare and use a similar guidebook focused on another methods and another directives. Lesson 17 How to avoid plagiarism AIBO, Nigeria Plagiarism is a serious offence in the academia but at times it is an offence committed unknowingly by the offender. For example it is the issue of duplicate publication whereby an author has submitted part of a work to book of proceedings and another part to a journal. It is advisable to read instructions for authors very well before sending in a paper to a journal and if one is not clear about any portion of the instructions one can get in touch with the editor of the journal. It is better to be safe than to be sorry. Many young writers are not familiar with rules guiding research publications and proper citation and this can lead to inadvertent mistakes which can lead to charges of plagiarism. Teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and young researchers about plagiarism should be made compulsory in teaching and research institutions. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 16 ISSUE 15, 2011-02-14 General comments by the Course Manager AIBO, Nigeria I want to suggest that the score for the new lesson 12 should be 40 or 50 when compared to the old lesson 12 which was 20 marks. The Ex 12.1 should still be 20 as in old exercise then 12.2 should be 20 or even 30 because it takes time more than lessons 14 and 15. Thanks for suggestion. However, the score cannot be changed while the course is running the value does not express the time required the points serve more as an indicator of successful submission of assignments correct understanding of a lesson is the most important consideration, questions incorrectly answered can be repeated, sometimes several times and marks changed from 0 to full points accordingly for the certificate assignments from all lessons are required, 70% is an additional requirement, which can be reached by everybody by means of corrections the aim of the course is to introduce sources of important information of benefit to the participant a distance learning course cannot be assessed in the same way as an examination as I cannot know who is answering from another part of the world for me an assessment of the importance of lessons by the participants would be important; unfortunately, only some append their evaluation and use grades 1 to 5 instead of 5 to 1 Perhaps the best objective criterion would be the ratio of the number of attempts necessary to correctly answer all questions. But whom should it concern? The improvement of your knowledge is my task and is in your interest. Is it important if somebody finished with 5% more or less compared to somebody working under different conditions and with a different background or motivations? I don't think so. I appreciate anybody who has registered and went though all lessons diligently, has learned something new, and become aware of something not noted before etc. I guess success is if somebody, who is not excellent in English, merely discovers the spell checker and is able to insert spaces at the right positions. And the best success is if the participant does not regard as “lost” the 80 to 120 hours spent with the lessons. I hope that everybody who finishes the course belongs to this group as otherwise they will disappear from the course. Course Evaluation Hana Zelnickova, Czech Republic When I saw Lessons from Good Research Practice 2011 for the first time, I thought that I couldn´t do it. It seemed to be too difficult. I didn´t understand what to do in lessons. But after hours on the internet I got a lot of interesting information, I educated in searching at different databases, recognized very useful sources from the science world and how to work with them. I consider this course as very beneficial. I estimate Lesson 6 - Supercourse Epidemiology, where were lot of lectures about variant topics together. I also esteem Lesson 2 - I can study information of my interest via on my mail from CGN, without complicated searching. Next positive is that databases, and all course were free of charge. I make clear something about writing manuscripts So I want to thank you, Mr. Prof. Hruška, for possibility of participation on this course. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 17 Jitka Osickova, Czech Republic I was very resentful, when I started doing the first lesson of this course, because all lessons seemed to be too difficult for me. But later it showed that whole course is much easier than it looked. I obtained a lot of new and valuable information and I discovered new databases, which I‟m going to use in the future. I think the most interesting lessons are 1,6,7,8,9,10 and 19. Lucie Schandlova, Czech Republic I find the GRP course as beneficial for further scientific research. It forced me to use English and make my views on individual issues. I think this course was appropriate that we could allocate time according to our job opportunities. But some lessons were too time-consuming and extensive. Most interesting lessons were for me: 1, 3, 6 and 17. Thank you for your patience trough the corrections. Alena Skockova, Czech Republic Good Research Practice distance leasing e-course was beneficial for me. It was great because I practiced my English and I learnt plenty of new words. Except it I discovered a lot of useful and important Web sites. Some lessons I consider more useful then others. I appreciate most lessons where I recognized new Web sites and where I learnt how to work with them, such as 6, 7, 9, 20, etc. As very important I consider also lesson 17 about plagiarism. Bohdana Janstova, Czech Republic GRP course really surprised me. It brought me so much new information and showed me very useful pages. I appreciate the fact that it´s a distance course and you can accomplish the tasks whenever you want. You can make your own schedule due to your time possibility. For me were interesting lessons 2, 6, 7, 11, 17, 19 and 20. I think this course is very good way how to help people who start with their science work and it is also useful material for them who are already moving in science. Lucie Chromcova, Czech Republic Thank you for opportunity to do this course and for your leading, patience and advices. I appreciate that this course is e-learning course. I could easily access to my lesson from my office or home any time. My another big benefit was that this course is in English language. I could re-fresh my knowledge of English language. In my future education and work I would definitely use web database and links which I have found in this course. The best projects for me: lesson 1,3,6,7,8,9,10,11,12. Martin Hostovsky, Czech Republic My name is Martin Hostovsky, aged 25, I've graduated at The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno in 2010 and at this time I'm study Ph.D. at Veterinary Public Health and Toxicology department and I'm working as an half-time assistant at Biochemistry department. The GRP e-course was useful for practise English and learn to research practice. This course gave me some good links and lot of information about the science. Thank you for your time to check all my lessons. In appreciation ODOL, Malaysia One of the greatest gift I received this new year is from Good Research Practice. For quite some times I have been looking for ways of coping a screen. Fortunately for me, that was the first thing I came across in one of the pages of 2011-01-20 bulletin. This inspired me to read further. Keep the good works. I am delighted to be a partaker of this supercourse. It is a value added advantage to me in this course. There is need for the gospel of this course of scientific enlightenment to be preached to other students, young scientists and researchers CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 18 Comments on .............. Lesson 02 Biomedical Technology, Epidemiology and Food Safety Global Network CENTAUR KLIZ, Czech Republic I would welcome in this course for at least part of the training focused on practical skills with documentation. The course focuses on the basics of photography, video, photo microscopy, image processing and analysis and multimedia would be very useful for many young colleagues who are with these technologies to meet every day. In the field of veterinary medicine, general knowledge of these techniques is below average and it's a shame. Good idea. However, the GRP distance learning course can only draw the participants‟ attention to relevant, available and free information of general significance for most participants. Specific topics should be addressed by other courses. Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills DANI, Nigeria I have ever experienced practices that differ from the rules described like student entering the laboratory without their laboratory coats and not using hand gloves when handling potentially infectious agents. Also, eating in the laboratory. But after I took this lesson I emphasized more on the things that should not be allowed in the laboratory. Lesson 04 Good Laboratory Practice DANI, Nigeria Great Lesson! All the information necessary for good research/laboratory practice were clearly stated and this will help to promote the quality and validity of data generated. More thanks. Lesson 05 EPA Quality System: Quality Management Tools - Standard Operating Procedures ALKO, Korea/Bangladesh Supercourse Epidemiology- Internet- Global Health” is an excellent source of lectures on global health. In the Lesson 06, there are numerous lectures on Epidemiology, Internet and Global Health. I got so many important information on different areas by visiting the lectures available within a very short time. Undoubtedly, this is an excellent web source of knowledge on Epidemiology, the Internet and Global Health. I must recommended the heath professional, Veterinarians, Nurses, Educationists, Teachers, Researchers and everybody who have at least interest for disease prevention and global health to visit the webpage. I would like to extend my thankful gratitude to the course coordinator of GRP2011 for including this lesson. Lesson 09 MyNCBI MAHO, Czech Republic It is the best lesson for me. The NCBI offer very big bite of information that are perfect stored and sorted. It is very useful and I will sure search other information on NCBI. My favorite is Pubchem – BioAssay. Thanks to GRP e-course to show me these web sites! CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 19 KLIZ, Czech Republic For me it is still an actual problem with obtaining full text. Even if the Web of Knowledge and NCBI is the same problem that for many practical obtain the full text handy google.scholar where many fulltexts downloads is easier. This is often the only source of full text articles in my field, which can be used free of charge. A key problem is retrieving published articles, and then to save them as full papers. As well as open access journals the University pays for access to many portals and databases. Students from the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Brno, have access through EZProxy from http://www.vfu.cz . Nevertheless, the purchasing of pdf reprints should be possible, too. Ask your superviser or the Head of the Department. No research should be done unless the published data are known. Lesson 10 How to write a paper in the format and style of a scientific journal NASU, Kenya If only you would have known of what value the lesson has been to me, you would be more than astounded. The lesson has helped me kill two birds with one stone. I not only gained knowledge on how to use the power point which I was poor at, went ahead to attain the practical aspect of it. I had always been trying to find notes i can access on how to write a research journal and you managed to drop it on my knees, thanks a lot. DANI, Nigeria This lesson has opened my eyes to things to avoid when trying to write up a scientific paper and the proper form it should take to make it acceptable to publishers. Before the end of the second quarter of the year I would have sent out at least five papers for publication because I was really spurred up to write after this lesson. I must commend the course coordinator for his meticulous choice of lessons in the GRP Course. I have gained so much from this lesson. Lesson 14 Book shopping DANI, Nigeria I have seen people bought books online but didn‟t know how to go about that. With this lesson I have learnt how to search for books online and how to purchase them. I can acquire recently published books and boost my personal library. A very big thank to the initiators of this course. Lesson 16 European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers DANI, Nigeria .................. the information I got from this lesson handled some of the problems faced by early researchers in my country. .......................... In the area of supervision, mentoring and appraisal by the senior researcher, the code of conduct stated clearly how all these should be done. So, I didn‟t want to digest it alone I had to make copies for some .............. researchers, who do not have time for their students to turn out a new leaf. Also to myself, it will really assist me in supervising and mentoring of students in the appropriate way and not leaving them all to their thoughts. I am happy with this lesson. ALKO, Korea/Bangladesh This lesson introduces the code of conduct for the recruitment of researchers in Europe which is very much important for the researchers who are interested in European Research as well as the employers. This Lesson helps me to understand about the European Charter for Researchers (General Principles and Requirement Applicable for Researchers and General Principles and Requirements applicable to Employers and Funders), The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers and so on. I would like to recommend all the interested researches to read the code of conducts and the general principles which is very important. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 20 Lesson 18 What can be learnt from the web site ODOL, Malaysia This lesson was of importance to me in that it teaches how to take of every details. Reading between lines. As a scientist in training, this is of immense importance so as to take note of every details of experimental work. Any slight deviation from the instruction or procedure can ruin the expected results if not the whole experiment. Lesson 19 How to write a dissertation ALKO, Korea/Bangladesh The Lesson 19 “How to Write a Dissertation” is a very important lesson for the Post Graduate Students and their Supervisors as well as for the Researchers in general. This lesson provided us knowledge on: The Craft of the Dissertation, The Relationship Between Student and Supervisor, The Confusion Between Topics and Problems, Difference between Thesis and Dissertation, Libraries and Librarians, The Mystery of Missing Stuff, Questionnaire Design, Referencing and Bibliographic Software, Balancing Research and Work/Family Time, Presenting Research, Editing and Editors, Publishing Articles and so on. I would like to recommend all the Post Graduate Students and Supervisors to read the “Dissertation Bulletin” provided in this lesson which will obviously help them a lot. I am very much grateful to the Course Coordinator to Provide the Dissertation Bulletin. Lesson 20 Add to your bookmarks NASU, Kenya The websites provided in the lecture, I believe, shall be the key to myself as well as many more upcoming scientist as a source of reference. The information provided is simply motivating, educative and inspiring. Even a lecturer can simply use the websites as a teaching tool to most students of their classes. Much gratitude since you are proving that i can learn much from the net than from a class. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 21 ISSUE 14, 2011-01-30 General comments by the Course Manager I am registered on the 6th of October 2010. What is a deadline? The 5 th or the 28th of February? A good question. A length of the course are four months. A general deadline is 28 February 2011. Then assignments will not be evaluated. Researchers have to be responsible and should be able to manage themselves. A project proposal submitted one minute after the deadline is rejected by a grant agency without opening the envelope. Several weeks of intensive work and a chance to receive a grant should be lost. I do not need to be so strict, so the assignments will be evaluated till the end of February, but 5 points penalty will be subtracted for every day after four months. Professor Karel Hruska Course Evaluation Marie Sevcikova, Czech Republic I was a little bit confused about a purpose of the course at the beginning. After a few lesson I have learned that the course provides me a lot of useful information. I improved my knowledge in different fields (work with text, writing in English, using of internet databases, etc.). I think the most useful and important lessons are 3, 7, 9, 10, 14, 19 and 20. I would like to thank Professor Hruska for the opportunity of distance learning. Time flexibility and free access are big advantages of the course Lenka Gajdova, , Czech Republic I think it was very good course. I recommend it to other students, researchers and those who want to learn something new. Lessons 1, 8 and 11 were the most interesting for me. Comments on .............. Lesson 02 Biomedical Technology, Epidemiology and Food Safety Global Network CENTAUR ALKO, Republic of Korea I just know about the Centaur Global Network from the webpage of the Good Research Practice and registered there. Therefore, I am but a novice and very new member of this global network of knowledge. I do feel proud of being a member of this network. I would like extend my thankful gratitude to the course coordinator of GRP2011 e-course for including the webpage of CGN in the home page of GRP-2011. Nowadays, I am getting the up to date information on my field of interest from the CGN which is very helpful for me. It is a very important network for disseminating information on biomedical technologies, epidemiology and food safety around the globe. It seems to me an important network for researchers and teachers. I am a veterinarian, teacher and researcher as well; I am getting information on different diseases of zoonotic importance which is very helpful for improving my knowledge as a teacher and researcher. I have read many of the reports/documents and articles published in the CGN homepage during the year 2010 and 2011. All of them are very important and informative which helps me a lot to upgrade my knowledge as a teacher of the clinical subject. Therefore, I would like to recommend the CGN as one of the best global networks for knowledge and information for the researchers and teachers. I hope and wish CGN will continue to carry more and more knowledge and information to the veterinarians, teachers, students and researchers. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 22 Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health NASU, Kenya Coming from a third world county where health is such an issue, the lecture proved motivating. It not only inspires to know that the rest of the world is well aware of the poor state of health most people are but also to know that something is being done about it. I think the lectures on health should be shared to everyone all over the world so that every one can be made aware of what part to play in the society in alleviating the health issues. Compliments to the WHO for their efforts. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 23 ISSUE 13, 2011-01-24 Course Evaluation Zdenka Hutarova, Czech Republic My personal evaluation has been evolved during whole the course. At first time I was not so interested in the course. However after elaboration of several lessons I realised, that it can be good way how to meet something new and especially important for me. I can not say, that some of the lessons was more important. Why? The most of information that you show me during the course are useful for my work. I think that the course is the small recipe for the beginners (just like me). You can learn there how to communicate in official way, about laboratory work, how to write and search the articles, how to write the references..... Really, all of the lessons were very instructive and I pleased to take share in this course. For me, the most interesting lessons were 1, 3, 4, 10, 12, 17. Lenka Zelnickova, Czech Republic My first impression of the course Good Research Practice was terrible and I thought that I can never finished it. A number of lessons seemed too complicated for me and I don´t understand absolutely what I should do. After developing a few lessons I told myself that it´s not so hard and I can master it. So I picked up new strength and enthusiasm and I embarked on other lessons. Currently, the successful development of all the lessons I finally found out for what is GRP course good. I prefer distance learning because allows flexibility (e.g. I´m doing anything at any time), e.g. it saves my time and money in fact. The whole course is prepared so that everyone learned something new, acquainted with the new scientific databases (which many of us didn´t know before), improved their skills in research. Many lessons were useful and contain information from many different disciplines and I believe that I´ll remeber for a long time many sites, databases and articles and I´ll actively take advantage of a new knowledge. Finally, I would like to thank Professor Hruska for registration and participaion in the course without charge. I hope in my personal improvement, I know how to write dissertation now and how to write a scientific journal and be successful at scientific conferences in future. In appreciation ODOL, Malaysia I prefer distance learning as it enables me to continue my research work and other academic work. The flexibility of online study that has to do with my convenience is another added advantage for me. Comments on .............. Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health HUMA, Czech Republic Maybe a small improvement could be done by magnification PowerPoint presentation, because it would be more comfortable for reading. Learn how to change displayed text by means of your browser. Lesson 09 MyNCBI LEZE, Czech Republic There are some differences between Web of Science and NCBI or PubMed. We can search in WOS by title, author, group author, year, publications, language, etc. But we can use more limits on site My NCBI CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 24 (PubMed, etc.). For example Species (Humans or Animals), Sex (Male and Female), Ages (infant, child, adult, etc.), Type of Article, and others. This is only a misunderstanding. WOS allows sorting according to the type of paper. Some criteria available in PubMed such as species, gender, age etc. are suitable only for specific searches, i.e., as introductory information. Otherwise valuable information could be missed. The search profile (and limits application) should be minimal while updating your field-oriented database. The bulk of work should consist of reading full articles, not only abstracts, to choose papers, important for your research. Lesson 17 How to avoid plagiarism MANA, Kenya The lesson is very informative on plagiarism and on the consequences. I now understand why my lecturers at the university insisted on writing References on any written task assigned and never awarded assignment copied directly from the internet. I conquer to the price payable due plagiarism to discourage those who thrive illegally on people‟s sweat. Internet provides plenty of temptations for would-be plagiarists, from essay-writing services to millions of web pages. To be on the safe side, to collaborate on a homework assignment or report, all the work turn in must be your own unless a team work has been required explicitly. If the work is collaborative, the names of all the participants should be on it. MAHO, Czech Republic These examples show how often the world of science is pollute by poor morale and ethic of scientists. I can say that is very hard to write an article or any paper without information and ideas of the others. But also it is very simple to note these primary researchers in the references. Why not to thank by this way for resources of the others in my own work? CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 25 ISSUE 12, 2011-01-20 Open learning on enteric pathogens portal cancelled. The List of Lessons updated: Lesson 12 changed. In appreciation MANA, Kenya It‟s a great opportunity to meet again this New Year. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to realize our capabilities. I enjoy tackling the assignment as they are because they pose challenges, and knowledge and most of all aid in learning techniques usually overlooked by many institutions. I have learned a lot and once again I am grateful. Comments on .............. Lesson 05 EPA Quality System: Quality Management Tools - Standard Operating Procedures GERM, Zambia The lesson is of significance in that it spells out how Quality management tools-SOPs should be made, the types and to be periodically maintained as procedures change. This is very cardinal in a laboratory setup as well written and maintained SOPs keep laboratory work in a good order. Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health NAPA, Nepal The course concept is well arranged and prepared but I felt that it is missing the concept of “One World, One Health”. The Supercourse has tried to touch or include most of the facets of human public health but it greatly lacks the animal health section that is directly related to humans. Moreover there are only few lectures discussing the potential of animals as human health hazard. If this portion could be supplemented then this course would really be a “SUPERCOURSE” Quote Supercourse is a repository of lectures on global health and prevention designed to improve the teaching of prevention. Supercourse has a network of over 65000 scientists in 174 countries who are sharing for free a library of 4735 lectures in 31 languages. The Supercourse has been produced at the WHO Collaborating Center University of Pittsburgh. End of quote Read more general information at Supercourse web page. Supercourse only makes available presentations which have been submitted. The fault is therefore on the side of veterinary lecturers, not the organizers of Supercourse, if there are a limited number of lectures on animal health. Nevertheless, veterinarians should be interested in a wide range of medical topics and should contribute to global health under the One World-One Medicine-One Health idea. See the One Health Initiative portal. Lesson 10 How to write a paper in the format and style of a scientific journal HUTA, Czech Republic It was not so easy, but information which is provided by this lesson are, on my opinion, very important. I am going to use all documents that are mentioned in the submission. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 26 Lesson 16 European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers MANA, Kenya European Charter for researchers and the code of conduct for the recruitment of researchers ensures that Member States makes an effort to undertake the necessary steps to a certain that employers or funders of researchers develop and maintain a supportive research environment and working culture, where individuals and research groups are valued, encouraged and supported, and provided with the necessary material and intangible support to enable them to fulfil their objectives and tasks. This charter should be adopted by the whole universe. Lesson 17 How to avoid plagiarism NASU, Kenya I think though plagiarism may be an offence committed by many, a lot of people are simply not aware that such an offence exists. Sheer mention of the word goes unnoticed by many as they do not even know that such a word exists. I was shocked to learn that even an assignment has to be realistic and originally put down and not duplicated. This is because most of us had simply duplicated the research assignments rather than read, understood and put down in our own words. Great words of wisdom have been imparted. As a matter of fact I shall let my friends and colleagues aware of the offence. GERM, Zambia Prior to embarking on lesson 17 my understanding of plagiarism was superficial, I have now an in depth understanding of what it is and before embarking on task of writing a research paper have a more cautious approach. It also has enabled me to have a more critical view of research papers if one was to ask me for an opinion. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 27 ISSUE 11, 2011-01-10 The Season‟s Greetings received from many GRP 2011 course participants have been greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. The course manager or lecturer cannot be responsible for the knowledge or skills gained by the participant because examination without a face-toface meeting is not possible. Some assignments are not teaching tools but only checks that recommended web page or documents have been found and are available to a student. It does not matter if the document recommended is immediately studied or added to files for later use. Certainly, the assignments which require answers to questions such as how many pages a document has or what is the title of an Annex do not represent the aims of a lesson but only evidence that the document has been found. In contrast, writing ability is very important and must be thought assiduously and checked Course Evaluation Michaela Talandova, Czech Republic The entire course is well prepared and I can say that I would appreciate more of the courses or subjects in this style. All lessons were generally useful. The only difference for me was in assignments. Some of them were interesting and it didn't take me a lot of time to answer. On the other hand, I have found those with essay requirement quite long and delaying. In appreciation LUCA, Czech Republic I found this course 'by accident' during browsing web of Veterinary Research Institute when searching for some information. This led me to the page with GRP e-course. I have never attended a complex research and publishing orientated course, so I persuaded myself to register. I once attended a course about databases, I think this is my strength, my weakness could be academic writing. My expectation is that after this course I will be stronger in writing of different academic things, I will know some more databases of scientific information and at least will be able to write my theses and dissertations and papers in a proper way. Distance learning is good in this way, I like independent working on my tasks, I usually stay in lab very long and then I can work on such written tasks in the evening, which would be impossible with presence requiring course. Comments on .............. Lesson 02 Biomedical Technology, Epidemiology and Food Safety Global Network CENTAUR KAAA, Nigeria My aged long registration with CGN was the source of information about the currently run GRP2011. I found information of benefits of members regards to ASM very interesting to me. It is of interest because no such information was detailed in earlier hand book supplied to members. Beside this, there were so many reports that were new to me such as: transmission of trypanosomiasis via food. It was known to be via blood stream by the bites of Tsetse in Africa and bugs as in chagas in the Americas. What of vultures as transmitters of anthrax? I am still reading such a piece and looking forward to receive the vulture newsletter from southern Africa. Really interesting and enlightening!! I hope that I will use many of provided information in my future work. Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health HUTA, Czech Republic Lesson number five „Supercourse epidemiology – Internet – Global Health“ was very interesting, mainly because of many provided information. I was really surprised how many spheres can be found there. However, what frustrated me slightly is, that I couldn´t find more information about e.g. hygiene of game‟s meat (I‟m quite interested in this topic). On the other side I found many others information there, which inspired me, especially in the sense how to create lessons for students. Lesson 16 European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers GERM, Zambia The lesson is of great significance in that in our setting there is no charter or code of conduct for researchers ,so there is nothing on paper that protects the interest of the researcher. We are in the process of forming a national association and this will greatly help in guiding to form our own. Lesson 17 How to avoid plagiarism GREL, Czech Republic It is not so easy to say, that plagiarism is easily the crime and everybody should to be punish for it always. I believe some of the plagiarism can be caused by culture difference and inadequate education. But in the same time, it is the same like with the law...ignorance is no excuse...Also, I think, there are many levels of plagiarism and it is necessary to distinguish it. Lesson 20 Add to your bookmarks SEMA, Czech Republic The lesson was full of interesting information. The mentioned URLs are very useful. I'm sure I will visit the web sites again. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 30 ISSUE 10, 2010-12-26 The List of Lessons updated: New wording in Lesson 7 and 19.2 General comments by the Course Manager IMPORTANT: Good Research Practice requires responsibility and good planning The participants, that registered prior to the 15th November 2010 and have to date, less than 10% of the obtainable points, can begin or continue to submit assignments under the standard conditions, with the added possibility to correct incorrect answers. However, they will not be notified by e-mail that any correction or revision is required. The only information they will receive regarding their progress will be available in the table GRP 2011 RESULTS, updated usually on Sundays. Comments on .............. Lesson 02 Biomedical Technology, Epidemiology and Food Safety Global Network CENTAUR NASU, Kenya Great insights have been highlighted in the course of the lecture. I am also encouraged by the effort put across by the Scandinavian countries to induct more female professors. The idea can be shared across nations. Please, keep sending me the educative informa-tion because my gratitude run deeper than the way they are written down. Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills NAPA, Nepal ........ methods of staining such as Gram stain; negative staining has not been described. By the way why did no this website include anything on fungus culture or staining methods? .... I think the site would be more informative if it could integrate the basic biochemical tests- their protocols, methodologies, results and interpretations as well. You may be correct from the position of your professional interest. However, keep in mind that this course on Good Research Practice is not aimed to specifically educate microbiologists, but any person with an interest in the field of biomedical sciences. I want to show the participants what kind of information can be found without great investments into books, travelling and courses fees, how can they be independent or a good supervisor/head and how much you should appreciate if you are so lucky as to have a good mentor. Also, how should they be an example to their students. The recommended pages were prepared by teachers for their students and were not constructed for general worldwide application. It generally reminds all researchers that they are all bound by set of rules and regulations that should be adhered to whenever a research is to be carried out. It proudly thins out any unethical research that can be done and reminds every scientist out there to be responsible enough to follow the laid down principles on good lab practise and research practise to the latter. Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health KAAA, Kenya The concept of the Supercourse and its lecture style has been described as the Global Health Network University and the Hypertext Comic Books. To a student of epidemiology the lectures are of paramount importance. The course has provided an in depth knowledge of epidemiology to both human and veterinary students and researchers. With the current call for “One Health” this course will provide a readymade material for self studies and assessment. I have found the course really a “super” thing indeed!! I have already added the website to my bookmark. Lesson 08 PubMed database KAAA, Kenya I gained a lot from this lesson. It is a gold mine for researchers simply for the wealth data and information the websites contained. Lesson 11 Biological research in developing countries: some hotspots MASI, Kenya This lesson was interesting in that we have been given an opportunity to self evaluate level where our research institutions are at, and what can be done in terms of providing solutions as insiders. If all the information collected may be compiled I have no doubt, very many research institutions and individuals can benefit from it. Nice stuff really interesting keeps me wanting to go back and start another lesson. Lesson 16 European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers NASU, Kenya Its great to know that there is a specific body that gives priorities to the researchers. The lecture is definitely educative and clearly spells out the definition as well as the roles of the funders, researchers and the government as a whole in relation to studies carried out. Glad to have found out that time taken CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 32 off does not affect a researcher performance. It‟s even more astounding to realize that gender balance can be a basis for recruitment which encourages more women to pursue the scientific world. Lesson 17 How to avoid plagiarism KAAA, Kenya Plagiarism is common and not only in science but in all facet of life. It can lead to a serious loss of reputation as observed with the cases exemplified above. Even with the stringent measures against it there are still dubious researchers involved in it to attain a certain heights in life. It must be rejected and punishable to the extent. I learnt plagiarism is not good; because is like gaining recognition, reputation, in life from other people's sweat. More stringent measures needs to be put in place and enforced. Lesson 17 is a source of warning and the assignments has further expose the bad side of plagiarism. Thus "to be forewarned is to be forearmed" Lesson 21 How to read the digital magazine KAAA, Kenya The lesson is thought provoking. I have learnt techniques on cancer cells detection, aspects of nanomedicine and allergies to peanuts. The website of clinical laboratory medicine will be a MUST visit site even after the course. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 33 ISSUE 09, 2010-12-10 General comments by the Course Manager Remember: Research requires precision in thinking, reading and writing. Imperfections always results in a loss of money and sometimes also in a loss of life. The List of Lessons updated: New wording in Lesson 7 Comments on .............. Lesson 01 Communication: an important way to successful collaboration NAPA, Nepal Most of the ideas expressed in the “Lesson 1” must have been pretty familiar to most of us. However if I may ask can we not take some newer concepts of communication eg by SMS in mobile phones, also a tool of communication? It might be taken that SMS is very informal method of communication so must have been omitted in this lecture. SMS is a wonderful tool for informing your friends that you will be late. E-mail is irreplaceable in most professional contacts due to its unlimited length, along with the possibility to attach documents in different formats, and the possibility to forward unchanged or commented e-mails, to reply easily with comments, saving a lot of time spent searching through files, spell checking, freedom to read and reply whenever it is suitable for the addressee, etc. The following bad habits should be avoided: replies with unnecessary previous correspondence, more than one linefeed between paragraphs, long intervals between mail box opening, mail box overflow, and spending more than one day delay to reply or informing the recipient that a reply with the requested information can be expected within two weeks etc. Lesson 12 Open learning on enteric pathogens MASI, Kenya This lesson was very informative and educative especially where there various lectures submitted by different users in the open learning on enteric pathogens. Lesson 13 Journal of Visualized Experiments MANA, Kenya This is the best teaching material that I've seen on line. In appreciation MANA, Kenya It is a marvellous opportunity to have this Distance E-learning. It is my first experience and I have some difficulties in most of internet links. However, there is massive improvement in from when I started the Lessons to date. CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION 34 ISSUE 08, 2010-12-03 Course Evaluation Md. Masudur Rahman, Bangladesh/Republic of Korea It‟s my immense pleasure to evaluate the whole course after it‟s successful completion. Actually this is my first experience with the distance learning and after completing the course it seems to me that I choose the best one. The course is designed with a total of 21 lessons taking into consideration the interests of a wide range of participants starting from the novices and students to the experienced researchers, teachers or administrative representatives. The arrangement of the lessons is also excellent with an option to start from any lesson so that a participant can go through the course according to his or her own choice. All the lessons are provided with necessary links for the participants with proper guidelines so that a participant can go through the links and can find out necessary materials to prepare the assignments. Every assignment is well designed to ensure all the benefits that the related lesson offers for the participant. Appreciation with critical guidelines on specific lesson from the course manager is a bonus for the participants that make the course more easy and enjoyable. The knowledge and skills that I gained through this course have obviously improved my level of understanding in terms of their practical applications that will surely help me to build up my bright teaching and research career for the days to come. This course introduces me a plethora of valuable online resources and databases that have proven me and continued to prove essential in teaching, research and project management. I‟m specially getting direct benefits from the lessons-2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 19 & 20. I have few specific comments on some lessons and on overall course that may make the course more fruitful in future. In Lesson-7 (Web of Knowledge), some additional links may be provided specially on it‟s important databases and tutorials (video clips) on them to make the lesson more easier to the participants to ensure all the benefits that the lesson offers as this lesson might be new to most of the participants. One lesson may be added here on Endnote database that I found most important for a participant especially for a researcher or teacher to make his own library and prepare a scientific manuscript more conveniently using this database efficiently. A pre-evaluation of a participant‟s knowledge on the lessons that the course will provide may be needed to assess the output results of the course more efficiently. Taking all the points in to account, I would like to recommend this course for the students, teachers, researchers as well as administrative representatives as an excellent distance learning e-course to improve their knowledge of understanding in their own areas. I think that all the accreditation and thanks should go to the course manager (Prof. Karel Hruska), who not only continuously strives to improve the course by taking suggestions from the global participants, but also helps extremely to all the participants to make the course successful. In my opinion, all the participants should complete the course successfully to improve himself as well as to ensure the course to be extended for the others that solely depends on it‟s successful completion and valuable comments from the participants. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks and to congratulate Prof. Karel Hruska for the incredible service he is offering to the global scientific community. I do believe that the GRP 2011 e-course will play significant roles to improve the standard of scientific research in the 21 st Century. I had tried some online courses earlier too, provided by other websites so I think it is also useful on the same way. Distance learning (free registration) are excellent methods of learning- offering flexibility of time, money, and have updated reference materials. Comments on .............. Lesson 13 Journal of Visualized Experiments SEMA, Czech Republic I had no idea that there are the websites of this type with free access. I was surprised by the quality of Journal of Visualized Experiments. I have seen some videos. All the videos were illustrative, clear and well done. The lesson is very useful to me. Lesson 01 Communication: an important way to successful collaboration DADA, Nigeria It has been an exciting lesson, because it forms the bases for effective communication among scientists in terms of report writing as well as publication of research output. Some of the recommendations were known to me, but the lesson has also exposed me to some vital lessons in effective communication principles. MASI, Kenya The information provided on communication is of high value. Ignorance on this concrete tool that is used on a daily basis has proved to be costly to research institution. Practicing effective communication proves that the scientific world is more diverse than the work done within the walls of research institutions. I wish to suggest that some formal teaching in the curriculum concerning and etiquette that apply to conference calls and video conferencing should be included. Thanks for your suggestions, it is evident you are looking for more information. Some links you are interested in, you will find in Lesson 20. The course cannot cover all topics, but it should encourage the participants to find additional sources themselves. Use Internet Explorer or other browser and look for “curriculum vitae” or “resume” or “videoconference”. However, you have to be careful, not all information available on internet is correct and the author‟s credibility should be assessed. Web pages of esteemed universities should be preferred. Use Google Advanced Search and university domaine .edu Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills MASI, Kenya The Micro eGuide is user friendly and interesting. I like the fact that it has examples and quizzes to test the users knowledge on the subject matter. It seems more work need to be done to reach many young scientists to familiarize themselves with this course Lesson 14 Book shopping KAAA, Nigeria The lesson has added wealth of knowledge to book(s) shopping online. The book is a must read particularly to a potential PhD candidate whose focus will be on "Molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium species". 43 CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC ISSUE 05, 2010-11-14 Comments on .............. Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills MANA, Kenya The lesson is elaborate and very educative. For example, on lab safety, I learn't that in case of an emergency, its best to call the authority using Institution's laboratory phone, in order to facilitate a faster response. Notes on Lab skills and lab equipment were very informative, too. ONME, Kenya The lesson was very educative. AMIK, South Korea The lesson is very important for the personnel who are engaged with laboratory practices for being a good researcher. Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills NASU, Kenya The importance of learning, understanding and correctly practicing safety procedures and hazards as well as being informed on how to deal with them has been eloquently put across so as to minimize risks to ones self as well as others while in the lab. Furthermore the demos brought to life what could not be understood theoretically. Lesson 06 Supercourse Epidemiology - Internet - Global Health DAKO, Czech Republic My opinion is that Supercourse is a good way how to meet and familiarize people with many interesting topics and improve knowledge about global health and prevention. Lesson 07 Web of Knowledge RAMA, Korea/Bangladesh This is one of the best lessons of the course. Before completing the lesson, I knew very few about the Web of Knowledge, specially the Web of Science and it's benefits. The lesson is designed in such a way that a participant must have to learn how to use the Web of Science to answer all the questions. Now I realizes how much important the Web of Science is specially for the researchers as well as the teachers. I would like to offer my special thanks and appreciation to the Course Manager for this lesson Lesson 11 Biological research in developing countries: some hotspots ANON ...... problems in the biological research field are improper statistical designs, poor knowledge on the principles of equipment use, improper general laboratory practices and lack of information on laboratory safety issues. 45 CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC Lesson 14 Book shopping SEMA, Czech Republic Possibility of book shopping through the Amazon website was already known to me. I have used their services several times. I recommend everyone to use this way to buy books. I think the lesson 14 is very useful and interesting. Lesson 17 How to avoid plagiarism RAMA, Korea/Bangladesh Plagiarism in science is most important for a scientist/researcher/teacher/student to know. 46 CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC ISSUE 03, 2010-10-31 Comments on .............. Lesson 01 Communication: an important way to successful collaboration MANA, Kenya I am taking this opportunity to appreciate your effort in ensuring effective communication is practised in the scientific fields. Majority of researchers tend to ignore this field without evaluating its impact on research work and the society. This course definitely aid towards improvement of many research projects. The knowledge gained from Lesson one will aid in improving my approaches towards different modes of communication and how appropriately to act upon each one of them. The lesson was elaborate, clear and interesting but challenging in a way, in that critical thinking was required to understand the article. NASU, Kenya I consider the information quite valuable. Initially I had no idea that communication was so important in research institution. It proves that the scientific world is more diverse than the work done within the walls of the laboratories. As an upcoming scientist just from college, I offer my credits for offering a lesson that most institutions would tend to ignore. In the context one is supposed to right align a text only to justify it later, ins't it a form of repetition? I also did not quite get the part about sending a multilingual letter to a foreign partner could you clarify and if possible have an example? Correspondence with foreign partners should be in English or in a language of the partner, if possible. Official letters should be understandable not only to the addressee, but also to the sender‟s and addressee‟s colleagues and chiefs. It means that if I am writing a business letter to my brother in a position at the head of a department at the institute in Italy, the letter should not be written either in Czech or Italian, even if we are both able to write and read in Czech and Italian. The letter can be a matter of negotiation with my director or my brother‟s staff members or it could be a part of some official files where it is more suitable to write in English. Some special documents like agreements can be written and undersigned in both languages, i.e. in Italian and in Czech. The letters should be printed on multilingual letterhead paper, which means that the name of the institute is written in both Czech and other language. The official registered name is important to find the institution in company registers etc. The mutations in other languages, at least in English makes it possible to understand what kind of “business” the sender represents. Titles and position (Head of Department, DeputyDirector, Project Leader etc.) are also useful and recommended. The same applies to e-mail signatures and to e-mail alerts of delivery failure, absence of the addressee etc. Lesson 02 Biomedical Technology, Epidemiology and Food Safety Global Network CENTAUR ALIR, Czech Republic When I first looked at this web-page, I had no idea, how interesting and beneficial it will be for me. I did not know, that I can find so much information about my field and about science at all there. RAMA, Korea/Bangladesh I‟m a new member of this global network of knowledge and I‟m feeling proud of becoming a member of this network. I would like to offer special thanks to the course coordinator of GRP2011 e-course for including the registration process for CGN in that course. Now I‟m getting the posting on different topics from CGN that are much informative for me. It‟s a very important network for disseminating information on biomedical technologies, epidemiology and food safety around the globe. It seems to me an important network for researchers and teachers. I‟m a veterinarian and teacher and researcher as well and I‟m getting information on different zoonotic diseases including other diseases 47 CENTAUR GLOBAL NETWORK INFORMATION VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC of veterinary importance that are improving my knowledge. I‟m specially becoming benefited through the information on Avian Influenza as I‟m doing research on Avian Influenza. I have read most of the reports/documents and articles written for CGN published by CGN during the year 2010. All of them are informative. For example, I have read an article on “Veterinary expeditions of Central and Eastern European countries against brucellosis, tuberculosis and glanders in Mongolia: a historical report” written by V. Kouba, Honorary Member of the CENTAUR International Advisory Board and I have got the whole scenario of these three zoonotic diseases in Central and Eastern European countries that obviously improve my knowledge. I recommend the CGN as one of the best global networks of knowledge and researchers and teachers should join with this CGN. Lesson 03 Microbiology: laboratory safety and skills RAMA, Korea/Bangladesh This lecture is very important as it provides basic instruction on laboratory safety, Laboratory skills and Laboratory equipments. Some additional information should be included in this lecture (mentioned in the assignment) to make it more useful for the advanced user. Every laboratory and Laboratory personnel should follow the guidelines provided in this lecture for personal safety and for keeping a safety environment as well. Some additional information should be included in this lecture to make it more useful for the advanced user. In Microbiology Laboratory Equipment Introduction section, new equipments should be introduced, like FACS Analyzer. It is impossible to change or improve information published by other authors that is available on the internet. Lesson 03 is designed to demonstrate examples of freely available instruction that cannot specifically address the needs of all those that access the resource. The authors are from different countries with different legislatory regulations. They are also working in rather different fields and in different positions, from novices and students to experienced researchers, teachers or administrative representatives. The guides, manuals and security measures for different instruments and types of work must be managed individually. ALIR, Czech Republic I would like to say that I am sorry that I did not know about this internet guide while I had a Food microbiology course because of a better clearness for me.
