Operations
Final Project Overview/Goal
- Assist the Operations Management
team through data collection
- Produced data in a digestible form
with a simplistic approach
- Completed through various
vehicles such as:
- Microsoft Excel
- Presentations
- Flow Charts
- Tasked with the goal of identifying
operational efficiencies and areas of
opportunity
- Completed through various
methods of research, data
analysis, and creative thinking
6
Operations
Highlighted Projects
- Pallet Research
- Given the task to research
the current pallets used in
MV warehouse
- Would it be beneficial to
switch from 48x48 pallet to
40x48 pallet
- Is it possible?
7
• Cost savings of upwards to
$20,000+ / year
• Time saved from switching drums
From 48x48 to 40x48
8
•Racking system, the third spot in is too big for a 40x48 pallet
•Drums would hang off of the smaller pallets by at least 3
inches
•Stacking of pallets, non-flammable drums would not be able to
be stacked 4 high. Flammables may not be able to exceed being
stacked 3 times
•Can’t carry two pallets on forklift when moving
•Already a problem with lack of space. With the reduced
amount able to be stacked and carried on a forklift at once,
would cause more problems
•Rollers to and from fill rooms - Drums would hit the bumper.
Possible fix to turn pallets other way. However then pallets
would hit bumper and cause drums to shift
9
•Most Important con: SAFETY. Cannot compromise

Picture
22
Biggest “Ah Ha” Moment at
Univar

Most
Challenging/Frustrating
Experience

- Given the task to count and record the
serial number for EVERY physical tote
on the property (indoor and out)
- Started to rain
- Was counting totes again by 6:00am
the next morning
- Urgent
- Stainless Steel totes started to warp in
the sun, causing them to make scary
noises
- Over 40 full pages of handwritten data
retrieved
