Potentate’s Message
Recorder’s Message
Nobles & Ladies:
Well it seems like yesterday
we were in New Bern starting our
year at the January ceremonial. It
was very eventful, filled with the
usual excitement of new leadership, newly created nobles and as
always Winter Weather in New
Bern in January. What a great
way to start! Thank you………
Sudan Shriner’s theme this
year “Leading the Way… One
step at a Time”, is how we plan to
approach every aspect of Sudan’s
program. In order to be successful
at any level, whether it is family, business or life, you must set goals
and from those goals develop a plan with the resources you have,
which will allow you to achieve those goals. Sudan’s biggest resource
is YOU, our members and their ladies. Everything we do and accomplish will revolve around you and the efforts that you provide
our fraternity.
The goals this year will be important to the future of the stability of Sudan Shriners. While we have a number of priorities, I would
like to focus on two for now: Membership and The “Temple”
Nobles & Ladies:
On January 23, 2016, we
saw the second youngest noble
in Sudan history take the reins
as Potentate of Sudan Shriners.
Congratulations to our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir Cale L.
Grady and Lady Jamie. The pace
was fast and exciting at the 2016
Winter Ceremonial. We had 48
new creations brave a cold blast of
winter and start yet another part
of their masonic journey. The Fez
and Rose Ceremony on Saturday
night saw our auditorium filled on both sides of the aisle, front to
back, with the future of our temple. We are not done though. Nobles, it will not take that much work to have another 50 creations
ready to go at the Spring Ceremonial in May in Kinston.
We want to acknowledge our immediate Past Potentate Jerry
Tillett and Lady Tanya for their hard work and dedication to the
fraternity in 2015. Our best wishes for their continued success in the
future. Our Winter Ceremonial, Friday night festivities were filled
with the normal time of giving by nobles and ladies representing
their units and clubs.
Membership will continue to be of the utmost urgency for our
temple in 2016. Nobles Jonathan Johnson, Masonic Relations, and
Brian Honeycutt, Membership have plans of turning the programs
around. They plan to keep in contact with our new nobles and showing our new creations why they are important as new members. They
are responding one-on-one to those men making inquiries through
our Shriners International MDS programs desiring membership into
our fraternity. If anyone wants to lend a hand to these committees or
has some ideas, please contact these nobles. I would like to ask everyone to become involved in restoration and recruiting the “Quality
Masons” into “Quality Shriners”.
As you may already be aware, Sudan will start the 100th Year
Anniversary Celebration in May 2016 and carrying over to September 2017. Illustrious Sir Cale and our Chief Rabban Stacey Pugh
will share this honor and will release some more info on this historic
event in the near future. We have good news about our noble’s participation in the annual Stated Meeting at our Winter Ceremonial
with over 250 nobles in attendance. We have a highly motivated Divan with a “leave it better than I found it” attitude and outstanding
teamwork amongst the entire group. Please make an effort to attend
the next Stated Meeting at the Spring Ceremonial. Meet and make
known to your Divan your concerns and questions about the operations of this temple. Noble Larry Barnes from the Johnston County
Shrine Club was appointed as the newly Public Relations Director.
Noble Larry and I will share the email listing being built to enhance
programs for both the Red Fez and Public Relations. If you are one of
these PR Reps, please share the blasts we send with your nobles and
ladies and help with articles and information for the Red Fez!
I strongly encourage every Noble to be active and attend your
Blue Lodge. We can’t find new Shriners without this element. Pray
for our sick and needy nobles and ladies.
1. Membership – We say this every year don’t we?? So what is different this year? The hope is to lay a foundation for not only
this year, but for years to come. When Membership and Masonic Relations work hand in hand to promote our fraternity to
search out and develop quality programs, we will not only bring
in “Quality” nobles but will keep them as part of our brotherhood. Jonathan Johnson and Brian Honeycutt are recruiting
and building a network of nobles that will help them build this
foundation for a lasting future. Join them, be a part of the solution.
2. The “Temple” – We need a plan for the Shrine Center long
term. Our forefathers built us a unique building that has long
served us well, however, we have not been the best stewards of
that asset. We have not, for various reasons, maintained that
building to the level it needed to be kept. Once again we must
lay a strong foundation and plan for our future. Where do we
go from here and what are our options? We have appointed a
team from the Divan to develop our plan and bring those options to you. Ultimately, it will be your decision on how we
proceed. We are already well into the layout of that plan and
hope to have it ready to present to you shortly.
The FOUNDATION of our fraternity is YOU. Sudan’s brotherhood has withstood nearly 100 years. How did we get here? By
working together as brothers in Masonic values to make us all better
men. I challenge each of you to look at your actions, are you doing what will make Sudan Shriners stronger? Are we all working
together? Is our cup half full or half empty? We don’t have to always
agree but we do have to work together, to compromise, to achieve
those goals.
Thank you for all that you do for our hospitals and our fraternity
because without you, we will not have that future. It is all of our jobs
to “Lead the Way…One Step at a Time”
Fraternally yours,
April 2016
Cale L. Grady, Potentate 2016

Dunn Shrinettes Host 10th
Annual Party
The Dunn Shrinettes hosted their 10th Annual
Children’s Christmas Party on December 16, 2015. The
Dunn Shrine Club, which has become a showcase in
recent years, was decorated in the holidays finest. The
Shrine children (patients), their siblings and children
of Shriners enjoyed games in which they earned tickets
which were turned in to gain prizes. There was food,
Santa Claus and gifts. “It’s just a highlight of our year
to treat the patients and their families,” said Dunn
Shrinette President, Jane Davis. They just enjoyed it.
It’s a wonderful occasion. Among those returning was
Madison Strickland, 14, of Clinton who came with her
parents and grandparents. Madison has cerebral palsy,
which in Madison’s case imprisons the body. She was
clearly excited to be there. “I don’t want to miss the
party,” she said. She said the best part is the games. “I
like playing.” Dawson Batts, 14, was back for the tenth
time. The Midway High School student is still playing basketball despite being born without an arm. Also,
the children present and some of the adults put together
handmade Christmas cards for another Shriner (patient)
girl from New York who was severely burned two years
ago in a house fire. She lost her Dad and three brothers
in the fire. She was the only survivor and been treated
at the Shriners Hospital in Boston. Article provided by
Lisa Farmer, My Daily Record, Dunn, NC.

events is their annual Christmas Party. They ask anyone
who attends to bring a gift for a hospital patient. As you
can see by the photo, “Santa” had a pretty good load. The
toys were then loaded up by Rocky Mount Shriner and a
member of the Sudan Roadrunners, Noble Don Davenport
and delivered to Shriners Hospital for Children - Greenville. The Shriners, Ladies and guests always do a great job
in participating knowing that the toys will be much appreciated by a child going through some tough times.

Sudan Shriners & Masonic
Relations
Hopefully you are all doing well and enjoying this
time of year! We are looking for members for our
Sudan Membership and Masonic Relations committee. We need Shriners who are active in their lodges
and clubs and units for this. We are starting a “Blue
Lodge Ambassadors” program where the members will
communicate between the Blue Lodges and our shrine
clubs. They will be responsible for keeping the Blue
Lodges informed of events for our clubs, units, and Sudan Shriners and keeping us informed of their events
as well.
We are hoping that by putting this group together
and getting it implemented we will improve relations
between our groups and also increase attendance and
membership for all! By working together as Brothers,
we can reverse our losses in membership and improve
our “tenants” as Masons. If you are interest or know of
a brother who would be a good candidate for our team,
please contact me at [email protected].
Thank you for all you do for “Our Children”.

Thanks again to all who sold or bought tickets and

have been different. As the saying goes nowadays, “Just

Sudan Cart Caravan
2016 Sudan Seminar
The Sudan Cart Caravan unit was created in 2002
during PP Stuart W. Lewis’ term as Potentate. The
unit is based at the Lenoir County Shrine Club consisting of fourteen Yamaha golf carts with a membership of twenty-one active members. The unit has won
first place in many parades and in competition with
other units in its weight class. The unit participates
in numerous parades throughout the year. It is not
unusual to ride in four parades on a weekend during
the Christmas holidays. We ride in all the ceremonial
parades and at Oxford Homecoming. We have competed in SAAMC competition and the SASA parades
finishing in first place several times. The Cart Caravan has participated in parades as far west as Tennessee, as far south as Myrtle Beach, and as far north as
Baltimore, MD. Our slogan is “Carting for the Kids.”
WE RIDE SO KIDS CAN WALK. Through our annual Golf Tournament we have donated over $20,000
to the transportation fund of Sudan Shriners.
Sudan’s annual seminar for the new leadership from
each of our shrine clubs and units was held at the New
Bern Shrine Club on February 20th. Approximately 80 nobles from throughout Sudan attended. The
nobles from the New Bern Shrine Club did another
bang up job as hosts for the second year. A great lunch
was provided by our very own Chef Crew, with plenty
to eat. The session was a busy one with over 15 topics being presented to the leadership. Hopefully this
will help and assist them throughout the year. There
were a lot of important questions ask and shared with
the nobles participating and a great deal of good old
Masonic fellowship. We would like to thank our Divan Nobles Buddy Brown, Oriental Guide, and Coble
(C3) Wilson, 1st Ceremonial Master, for coordinating
and managing the seminar. The power point program
was prepared by Noble Dana Maudlin. Last but certainly not least, thanks to Sharon Evans, our Office
Manager, for preparing the packages and documents
for this seminar.

Rabban, Stacey Pugh.
The Sudan Motor Patrol is based in Kinston at the
Lenoir County Shrine Club. It is one of the oldest units
and the oldest motorized unit in Sudan. There were approximately 25 charter members. One of the charter
members, Noble Lee Hamm is still active at the age of
87. The unit was formed in 1962 during PP William A
Prince’s term of office. Noble John K. Ervin of Kinston
served as its first Captain. The members perform intricate maneuvers on individually owned Yamaha V-Star
650 motorcycles. They perform and entertain crowds at
ceremonial parades as well as many Christmas and civic
parades. The above photo is a group photo of the golf
cart and mini model T, which are recovery vehicles of
the Motor Patrol. Noble L. G. Grady originally owned
them, 2016 Potentate Cale Grady’s father. Illustrious Sir
Cale is also a member of this unit. This photo was taken in New Bern at the 2016 Winter Ceremony in New
Bern. As with all Sudan Shriners, the children are the
most important reason for our cause and the Sudan Motor Patrol rides so that a child can walk.
The archive photo below was taken early on in the unit’s
years and shows an outstanding group of dedicated nobles.
The 2015 edition of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas went off in great fashion as always. This event is the
oldest high school all-star football game in the nation
and was played again this year at Gibbs Stadium at Wofford Collage in Spartanburg, SC. Our patients won the
game again as they have for 79 years. The actual football
game score saw our North Carolina All-Stars walk away
with a resounding 54-39 victory on the field. The check
for Shriners Hospitals for Children in the amount of
$2,567,920.15 was presented to the Imperial Potentate,
Illustrious Sir Jerry Gantt during the halftime festivities.
The amount reflects the total amount of donations made
to the Shriners Hospitals for Children by the six shrine
temples in North and South Carolina for 2015. The presentation was made by Sudan PP and President of the
SBOC Brack Wilson. We were also honored to have
with us for the weekend, the Grand Master of Masons
in North Carolina, Most Worshipful Bryant D. Webster.

Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas - 2016
The first meeting for the
2016 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas “kicked off” at 1:00pm on
Saturday, February 26, 2016.
Representatives from all six
temples from North and South
Carolina met at the Beach Colony Resort in Myrtle Beach with
a board meeting, and elections of officers. Noble Ronnie
Blount from Sudan did not seek re-election as Chairman
after serving four years. A lot of good things happened
during those four years under Ronnie‘s leadership. Noble
Ronnie repeatedly said, “a lot of teamwork” and what “we
accomplished” during his tenure was what counted. Amran Shriners PP Connie Altman, was elected Shrine Bowl
Chairman. Sudan’s Oriental Guide Allen “Buddy” Brown,
Jr. was elected as the 5th Vice President. The coaches for
the game were announced with two of the six for the North
Carolina team coming from Sudan territory as well as the
Adult Athletic Trainer.
Several changes were discussed and announced for
2016. There will not be parade this year but there will be a
Junior Shrine Bowl All-Star Game comprised of sixth graders from both states. That will be followed by the annual
contest between the senior all-stars from each state. There
will not be a silent auction but a live action held immediately after the banquet on Friday night. Items are needed
for that auction.
In closing, Sudan’s Noble Tony Edwards, Chairman for
the Shrine Bowl Clothing Sales Program was presented a
game ball from the 2015 bowl game. The day ended with
a great dinner, awards presentation and another evening
filled with brotherly love and fellowship accompanied by
lots of lovely ladies from our temples!
Noble Tim Ludwig a member of the Board of Governors for the Greenville Shriners Hospital provided a report
for 2015. Noble Tim started out with, “It was another banner year for our hospital. All of the year end numbers are
not yet available but I will share what I have.”
· 2,992 New Patients in 2015 – New record
(19% increase)
· 14,546 Outpatient appointments – New Record (15%
increase)
· 1,203 Surgical Cases – New record (5% increase)
· Patient Satisfaction is 97-99.5%
· Operating Budget for GSH is $24M
· $3,055,517 donations raised locally for SHC-G
· $5,382,892 total donated specifically for SHC-G
· 16.1 days - Average new patient wait time
· 274 trips, with 104,394 miles recorded by Sudan
Roadrunners to our hospitals. Most by any group to
the Greenville Hospital.
There were two new surgeons hired in 2015 and plans
are to add a 7th physician in August of 2016. Additionally,
a request has been submitted to Tampa for the addition of
a third Operating Room suite and the total renovation of
the current OR space as well as pre-op, post-op, and family
waiting area for those having surgery. This is a major project with a total cost of $7.2M. SHC-G has a goal to raise
$3M for the project locally.
Annual Shriner Days in Greenville was held March
11-12 and as always, was exciting to everyone especially
those visitors who have not had that privilege to see and
visit our hospitals. There were several patients and their
families present to share their personal experiences. This
year the Motion Analysis Lab tour and the OR tour were
highlighted.

In the U.S., electrical burns and injuries from
lightning result in thousands of admissions
to specialized burn units annually. In addition,
electrical fires in residences cause more than
45,000 fires annually.
When Outside, Remember:
• Come indoors and remain there during an electrical
storm (one with lightning strikes).
• Never play near electrical wires
• Stay away from areas marked DANGER:
HIGH VOLTAGE.
Remembering a few basic safety tips can help
keep you and your children safe.
• Never climb utility poles, transmission towers, etc.
In Your Home, Especially if Young Children
are Present:
• Do not climb trees that are near power lines.
• Place covers on all electrical outlets.
• Do not throw anything at utility poles or wires.
• Unplug all electrical items within a child’s reach.
• Only fly kites in dry weather and in open spaces. If
your kite does get caught in an electrical wire, call the
electric company for help.
• Do not allow toys that must be plugged into an outlet.
• Teach your children to never touch electrical outlets or
play with electrical cords.
In Your Home, for Everyone’s Safety:
Contact a Qualified Electrician:
• If you have recurring instances of blown fuses or
tripping circuit breakers.
• Use extreme caution when using electrical appliances
near water.
• If you experience a tingling feeling when touching an
electrical tool or appliance.
• Do not overload electrical outlets.
• If your outlet switches are warm or discolored.
• Replace electrical items that show signs of wear,
such as frayed wires.
• If there is a burning or rubber-like smell coming from
an appliance.
• Keep your clothes dryer free of lint accumulation so
that it does not become a fire hazard.
• If you have flickering lights.
• If there are sparks coming from an outlet.
• If you are in or standing in water, do not touch
anything electrical.
• If wall outlets are cracked or broken.
• Do not use extension cords to plug in appliances,
• Plug items in appropriately (do not force a three-prong
plug into a two-prong plug outlet).
• Use certified surge protectors and power strips.

Mark Your Calendars Now for Imperial Session
2016 in Tampa
The 2016 Shriners International Imperial Session
is scheduled for Sunday, July 3 through Thursday,
July 7, 2016 in Tampa, Fla. Tampa is home to
the headquarters of Shriners International and
Shriners Hospitals for Children, the Tampa Shriners
Hospital, and Egypt Shriners. In addition to being
a community that strongly supports the Shriners
organizations, the nation's 54th largest city offers a
unique and exciting experience for everyone.
Once considered the Cigar Capital of the World,
Tampa Bay is a vibrant region with a rich, cultural
heritage. Visitors can experience a lively downtown
area, thriving arts scene, expansive culinary
offerings, exceptional shopping, serene river
excursions, and thrilling attractions. With all this
and more, Tampa surely offers a wide range of
entertaining things to do for all ages.

Discover Tampa Bay
Our city is looking forward to welcoming you to the
unique blend that is Tampa, centrally located with
easy access by air, highway and waterways. A laidback city with plenty of opportunities for adventure,
Tampa is a one-of-a-kind destination surrounded
by glistening bay waters on Florida's gorgeous
west coast.
The 2016 Imperial Session will be held at the
Tampa Convention Center, a world-class 600,000
square-foot space offering stunning waterfront
vistas. Located along the beautiful Riverwalk in
downtown Tampa, the convention center is boat
accessible, and situated near many of Tampa’s
premier attractions, first-class accommodations and
topnotch restaurants. Adjacent to the center, you’ll
find one of the area’s leading attractions, The Sail, a
360-degree waterfront bar and performance venue.
Downtown Tampa is also home to a diverse
collection of cultural organizations, including the
David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts
and Patel Conservatory, Tampa Bay History Center,
Tampa Museum of Art, Glazer Children's Museum,
Tampa Theatre and Henry B. Plant Museum.
For fun and relaxation, pay a visit to downtown’s
Channelside Bay Plaza, where you can shop ‘til you
drop, get a bite to eat, grab a drink, and enjoy the
Mediterranean style courtyard on the water. You may
even want to take a relaxing dining cruise on the bay,
or spend time at the spectacular Florida Aquarium.
To explore even further, hop aboard a unique,
vintage streetcar, the TECO Line Streetcar, and
bounce between downtown Tampa, Channelside,
and world-famous, historic Ybor City.
Outside the downtown districts, the Tampa Bay
metropolitan area offers even more to see, do and
explore. For starters, golfers can take advantage of
the diverse courses available, thrill-seekers can ride
the roller coasters at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, and
sports fans can catch a Tampa Bay Rays game at
Tropicana Field, which is also home to the East-West
Shrine Game. And don’t forget our many surrounding
beaches, parks and recreational trails.
However you decide to experience the Tampa
Bay area – whether you choose to relax at an
outdoor cafe, stroll along the Riverwalk, unwind
at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, or float down the
Hillsborough River alongside the graceful manatees
that populate our area, we know you will have a
great time exploring our favorite city.
Join Us for the Most Important Event of the Year

THE “RED FEZ” MAGAZINE
The Sudan Shriners “Red Fez” magazine is a quarterly publication intended to keep the
Nobility, their families and interested friends informed of upcoming events, announcements,
and news from Sudan Shriners, clubs, and units.
With a renewed commitment to keep all members informed, the Potentate, Sudan Divan,
and Sudan office personnel strive to provide timely information distributed through Website
updates at www.sudanshriners.com in addition to this publication.
We welcome article and photo submissions from all Sudan members, clubs, and units with
assurance that with space permitting and publishable photographs attached, you can expect to see your material published on
either the Website or in the “Red Fez”. Submissions will be subject to rewrites or modification to insure journalistic accuracy,
timeliness, and proper style.
With a rich rewarding history to relish and help compose, Sudan Shriners will continue to provide you, the individual
member, club or unit, outlets to share with others, your experiences in your Shrine journey.
The results of your labors are evident in the number of children who have so much more than they might have had otherwise,
through your support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Be proud that you wear the Red Fez of a Sudan Shriner!
Submit material for the “Red Fez” to Sudan Shriners, 403 E. Front St., New Bern, NC 28560. Submit material for Sudan’s
website to: [email protected]. Office: 252-637-5197 Fax: 252-637-9935.
