By evening's end, the guests at Blessed Savior had
learned more about the history of the Philippines and
even had a chance to taste some of the food of the
Philippines courtesy of the Filipino community who
brought food to share. And, though the parishioners
and guests had to walk back out into the cold Wisconsin weather, they left with warm thoughts about the
Filipino community who had entertained and shared
their heritage with them.

n the evening of February 22nd,
Isabel Maria Piana invited the
audience at Blessed Savior's
Mardi Gras of Cultures to abandon the
cold twenty-five degree weather and
imagine themselves in a much warmer
climate where cool ocean breezes caressed the island nation of the Philippines.
Through song and dance, the Silahis,
Liwayway and Sampaquita dancers
transported the audience to the archipelago in the Pacific. Dancers entertained
the two hundred guests to the Subli, Pandanggo Sa Ilaw, Estudiantina, Carinosa,
and, of course, the Tinikling. To the delight of the audience, they were invited
to try their dance skills of maneuvering
in and out of the moving poles. Between
dances, songs in both English and Tagalog were rendered by Jose Gabriel Apostol, Amy Schemenauer, Sheila Jackson

FAAWIS Youth Scholarship Recipient by Isabel Maria Piana
T
he scholarship committee was duly impressed by the many applicants for the Filipino American Association of WI Youth Scholarship. After careful consideration of all the applicants, Francisco Alejan-

dro Ramos was chosen as the recipient.
Francisco is the son of Ferdinand
and Gloria Ramos. Francisco is currently an active senior at Brown
Deer High School and was named
valedictorian of his graduating class.
He is involved in a variety of activities ranging from National Honor
Society to Spanish Club to Handbell
Choir to orchestra, to Math Team
and more. One of his major activities
is as a valuable member of the mentoring team for freshman students.
Francisco is also proud of his involvement with the Filipino community, especially as a member of the Liwayway Dance group for nine
years. In his essay of how he sees himself as a Filipino-American in ten
years, Francisco emphasizes how he hopes to continue sharing his Filipino culture. He believes that the intertwining of American and Filipino
culture is combining the best of both worlds. This philosophy is what he
wants to continue to share by example and involvement with both communities. Meanwhile, he looks forward to his engineering studies at
UW-Madison or Marquette in the fall of 2014.

supported our Annual Spring Bowling last April 5th. It
was a sold out event with a total of 104 registered
bowlers. Most importantly, we raised and donated
$500.00 to the Free Medical Clinic. Indeed it is rewarding to know that while we had fun amongst our
families and friends we also played a part in supporting a very important organization in our Filipino community, the Free Medical Clinic. Thank you to the
committee members for all your hard work!

FAAWIS BOWLING by Ed Catacutan
O
n April 5, 2014, many FAAWIS members along with friends and
family participated in the Spring Bowling Tournament held at JB’S
on 41. Teams like: PNAWI Strikers, Pinheadz, Bakalz Boys and Bakalz
Girls, St. Francis Hospital and others raised money to support the Free
Medical Clinic of the PCCCF which provides basic medical care to
uninsured and underinsured in the Milwaukee area.
Approximately 130 bowlers attended the event. While serious bowlers rolled their bowls for strikes and pins, others came to cheer and support their favorite team. It also gave parents some time to bond with
their children and other family members. All children who participated
received participatory medals. Adrienne Allioso bowled her way to an
impressive 1st place in the girl’s

Marcella Prime, Kaylib Berkshire and Adrienne Allosio. Lastly, 3rd place
went to Dr. Singson’s group represented by Mareta Prill, Bob Prill, Jojo
Ramos and Gerry Ramos.
The afternoon was full of excitement and food was served during the
award ceremony. A highlight of the event was the 50/50 raffle cash prize

presentation of proceeds to Dr. Violeta Singson, medical director of the free
medical clinic at the PCCCF, by FAAWIS president Joyce Coury. The
support that many participants extended was appreciated and it made the
fundraiser a rousing success. A special thanks to the bowling committee led
by Edgar Catacutan and members: Joyce Coury, Delilah Dejamco, Marivic
Gilbert, Tom Hey, Marlou Kelly, Patrick Moloney, Maria Tilisyak, and
Divina Wells.

MacArthur Memorial Week 2014 Update

n enthusiastic group of Filipinos along with their family and friends
attended the MMW Booklet launch at the Marquette University
Law School. The event held on April 8, 2014, coincidentally close to
the Filipino holiday, “Araw ng Kagitingan “(Day of Valor), officially
introduced the MacArthur week celebration scheduled for June 3-7 of
this year.
Chas Mulcahy, a retired lawyer and veteran leader in the Milwaukee
area and the brains behind this huge endeavor, was very appreciative of
the Filipino community’s participation.
We were honored to have brought special guests including Louis
Crisostomo, a former spy during World War II. His memoirs generated a
good amount of curiosity among other attendees. Another guest, Paul
Reemsnyder, is a veteran who was at USS Oakland and witnessed the
signing of the treaty of surrender with Japan. We were also the only
community who had a representation from our Consulate in the presence
of Vice Consul Ricarte Abejuela who graciously and succinctly delivered an impromptu speech.
As we roll into the official activities of June 3-7, it is the great hope
of the organizers and leaders of this event that the Filipino community
continues with its strong support and attendance. Thursday of that week
will feature talks and detailed discussions about the role of MacArthur in
the Philippines and of the great sacrifice and ingenuity of the Filipinos.
Throughout the week there will also be movie nights, exhibits, a dinner
event and a breakfast event featuring the Munting Tinig Choir just prior
to the rededication of the MacArthur Statue. To the challenge of our
continued support we will step up. In June, we shall return!

Celebrating Zen’s Retirement by Maria Yumang
A
49 year nursing career! The first couple of years in the Philippines, and the final two score split between Canada and Wisconsin.
Zen is a nurse by profession and has held many job titles, including a
Director of Nursing in several long-term care facilities and senior living
centers in Southeast Wisconsin. Her last assignment was at VMP Manor
Park and VMP Trinity from where she officially retired as a Corporate
Nurse Consultant.
Zen was the President of the Philippine Nurses Association of Wisconsin from 2010-2012. She led the organization with much enthusiasm,
dedication and integrity and has been a constant powerhouse of energy
and inspiration. She is a recipient of the PNAWI Leadership Award in
2013. Before she served as the President of FAAWIS in 2013, she has
already been active in the community, spearheading several socio-civic
events, and served as the Treasurer of the USTAAW for five years. She
was recently appointed as the Nursing Director of the Free Medical
Clinic.
A group of friends and family recently celebrated this momentous
occasion with a sumptuous retirement luncheon at the FMC Hall. Linda
Ravelo emceed the short program, that started with an invocation led by
Angelito Tenorio Jr. Speeches from leaders/representatives of associations followed: Joyce Coury (FAAWIS), Gem Cubos (PNAWI), Dr.
Violeta Singson (FMC), Dr. Jazmin Parcon (USTAAW) and Gerry
Ramos (PCCCF). The crowd also enjoyed musical renditions by Amy
Schemenauer, accompanied on the keyboard by Nonie Dijamco, and we
were enthralled by the dance number of Amanda and Ashley Gilbert.
The program closed with a deep-gratitude speech from the honoree herself.

UPAAW Tulod-Printz “College Scholarship”
A second $1000 scholarship, available to
college undergraduate students, was announced by the University of the Philippines
Alumni Association of Wisconsin, Ltd.
(UPAAW). The first scholarship, also for
$1000, is available to graduating high school
seniors.
The second scholarship, called the UPAAW Tulod-Printz College Scholarship, is funded by Drs. Jonathan and Magnolia Printz of Brookfield, WI.
Magnolia Tulod was a former UPAAW scholarship recipient; she received
awards in 2000 and 2001. They recently started their respective medical practices in the Milwaukee area.
Eligibility requirements for the Tulod-Printz scholarship include: 1) at least
50% Filipino parentage, 2) resident of Wisconsin, 3) adjusted gross family
income not to exceed $80K, GPA of at least 2.0, and 4) currently enrolled as
a full-time student in a 2- or 4-year college/university in Wisconsin. The recipient of the award is required to submit a verification of attendance letter
signed by an officer of the institution he/she is attending in order to receive
the award.
Application forms are now available; requirements include submission of
transcript of academic records, work history, co-curricular activities, community activities, a 250-word essay, the student’s 2014 Federal Student Aid
Report (SAR), and financial information from the parent/guardian. The major
criteria for selecting the recipient of the scholarship are merit and financial
need. Deadline for submission of application for 2014 is the end of July. Application forms may be requested from Apol Ortiguera [email protected].

Congratulations Graduates 2014
Tristan
Tristan Aniceto, Salutatorian Honor from South
Milwaukee High School, will be pursuing a degree
in Music Performance and Education, and a possible
degree in Economics at Montclair State University
this fall. In all four years of high school, he has been
awarded first place for violin at the State Solo and
Ensemble, and last year was awarded the
"Exemplary Musician Award". He was awarded a
full tuition scholarship and grant from Montclair
State, the College of Performing Arts Scholarship
from Roosevelt University, the Premier Artist Award from the
Jacob's School of Music at IU-Bloomington, and the Chancellor's/Powers-Knapp Scholarship - a full tuition and
stipend scholarship from UW-Madison. His proud
parents are Benjamin and Ritchel Aniceto.

she is the Asian Student Union President in her

Our oldest grandchild, Erica Colarusso,
will play the lead role in Midsummer
Night's Dream this weekend. She is a
sophomore at a big high school (2,400 students) in Brownsburg, Indiana. After one
year of minor roles in Little Mermaid,
Laughing Stock, Anything Goes and Miracle Worker, she was so ecstatic to finally

RAISING MONEY SMART KIDS TEACHING CHILDREN TO SAVE

ids are fascinated by how many pennies are in a dollar, or
how much candy they can really buy for 75 cents. But teaching them the value of money and the importance of saving – now
that’s another story. Children (and many adults) tend to live in the
moment, so encouraging them to save for a rainy day can be challenging, though not impossible. Setting the right example and instilling good money management habits while kids are still young is
the first step towards raising financially literate adults.
Allowance Basics: The 10-10-80 Rule
As soon as children are old enough to handle small amounts of
money (typically around first or second grade) they should be allowed some of their own cash to manage. Once you’ve establishes
the amount, frequency and guidelines of allowances in your home,
sit with your children to discuss a plan for saving, sharing and
spending. A good rule of thumb is the 10-10-80 allocation: 10% to
savings; 10% to charity/church; and 80% to keep and/or spend.
Like many of us, most children will not be initially thrilled at the
idea of saving 10% of their money. But teaching them that saving
isn’t what we do with money that’s leftover, rather, it’s what we set
aside right off the top, can establish a positive money management
pattern that will carry them into adulthood. It helps to give young
children a reason to save by identifying some goals they may have.
Inspire their desire to save by brainstorming about big ticket items
the child has been wanting – a computer game, microscope, etc.
Then sit down and figure out a savings plan that will help them
achieve their goal. If you believe in paying your child for odd jobs
and chores, help him come up with income producing ideas to accomplish his goal. Not only will this help instill a lesson on the
value of money, it will also make the purchased item more meaningful once it is finally obtained.
You can also teach your children about the magic of compound
interest by offering to add interest to their savings for each week or
month they leave it untouched. Watching their money grow will do
more to motivate them than any number of lectures on the subject.
(Saving $5 a week at 6 percent interest compounded quarterly will
total about $266 after a year, $1,503 after 5 years, and $3,527 after
10 years!).
Teaching children to share
begins in preschool so applying it to the financial
arena
may not be as
difficult as you
may think. Encourage
your
children to set
aside 10% of
their allowance
for charity. Allow them to contribute to organizations that help
families
and
children within
your community,
and also allow
them to participate in food,
clothing and toy
drives. Be sure
to track their
contributions in
a notebook you
review at the end
of the year so
they can see the
many ways their generosity impacted others. Pint-size philanthropy
pays off in later years by establishing a healthy attitude towards
money and the many good things it can accomplish – not just purchase.
Lead by Example.
At the end of the day, children are going to learn more from what
we do than what we say. The best way to teach our children good
money management habits is to practice them ourselves. Walk the
talk by sticking to an established savings plan and budget; pay off
debts in a timely manner; live within your budget and resist impulse
shopping; give to charitable causes that are meaningful to you; help
protect your family’s future with adequate insurance coverage; and
finally, maintain a teachable attitude yourself. Make wise money
management choices that you can pass on for generations to come.
