Chairman’s Message
Dear Member,
I have been on the board of Retail Alliance since 2003,
and currently in my second year as Chairman. As a first
hand witness to the changes that the association has gone
through, I can say without hesitation that today Retail
Alliance has positioned itself to be an outstanding resource
for its members.
During the past ten years we have grown from a “for-profit”
credit bureau to a “non-profit” trade association geared
to serve its constituents through advocacy, education,
products and services.
I take pride in our accomplishments and can only hope
that retailers throughout Hampton Roads will take the
time to take advantage of
the resources that Retail
Alliance offers.

This is our first attempt at creating a membership directory
that reinforces our role as a “Trusted Resource for Our
Members”.
We believe that assuming the role of a trusted resource
means being a facilitator of both tangible and intangible
services that help our members become successful;
services that cover the gamut when it comes to operating a
business. Our brand represents the three-prong approach,
similar to our logo: advocacy, education and benefits, as
illustrated on our cover.
In this directory, you will find a listing of the finest
proponents of our association, our Board of Directors. The
Board is comprised of individuals who provide leadership,
wisdom and a sincere passion for what Retail Alliance
stands for.
We’ve included a complete directory of our members,
listed both alphabetically and by category. In addition, we
have provided a detailed description of all products and
services, educational tools, signature events, businessafter-hours, legislative forums, etc.

Historical Overview
In 1902, the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce determined
that retailers’ needs were different from most businesses.
Thus, the Retail Merchants Association was created in
1903.
The issues that were addressed by the new association
were timeless in nature. They included networking
opportunities, transportation, advertising, licensing, taxes,
holiday closings, etc.
During the early years of the association, the extension of
credit by retailers was a crucial part of day-to-day business.
With the creation of the Retail Merchants Association
(RMA) in 1903, RMA was in the right place at the right time
to cater to the credit reporting needs of its members. In
1906, the purchase of the Norfolk Bureau of Credit was the
ideal fit for the organization.
Throughout the years, RMA focused on credit reporting
initiatives. Through automation and other peripheral
services (mortgage credit reporting and recovery services),
the credit bureau became a major revenue generator.
Changes in technology, automation, and national mergers
have supplanted the need for a local credit bureau and its
peripheral services.
Through initiatives of the board and staff, Retail Alliance
is working hard to establish a portfolio of products and
services that will establish the organization as the premier
organization serving the interest of local retailers in
Southern Virginia.
Our current structure reflects two critical retail needs:
Business Solutions and Retail Services.
Retail Alliance Business Solutions Inc, a separate for-profit
company, is comprised of our representation as the Equifax
Sales Agents and Data Genesis Sales Agents in Hampton
Roads. Retail Services is the association and non-profit arm
of Retail Alliance.
The goals and strategies employed over the last century
serve as a solid foundation for the coming years as the
expansion of Retail Alliance continues.
1903: The Retail Merchants Association of Norfolk elected
officers and started meeting. Members met in the Chamber
of Commerce headquarters on Granby Street.
In the early years, the officers and members considered
programs such as: support of the Jamestown Exposition
of 1907 with a model department store on the site; early
closings on special holidays like Labor Day and Memorial
Day; strategies to lobby the City Council on the Merchants
License Tax; and a resolution to prevent “barking,” or
soliciting of trade on the street.
1906: The Association organized a Bureau of Credit,
charging users twenty five dollars per year. The Association
and Credit Bureau moved to its own space in the Bureau
of Trade.
1957: The company expanded its services by adding a
Recovery Department for collections of past due accounts.
1978: The Retail Merchants Association of Norfolk merged
with The Retail Merchants Association of Portsmouth and
became The Retail Merchants Association of Tidewater,
Virginia, Inc.
1979: The company moved to Poplar Hall Drive in the
burgeoning Military Highway district of Norfolk. This
relocation was an effort to become easily accessible
to consumers throughout Hampton Roads (previous
headquarters were at Lonsdale Building, 207 Granby Street
Norfolk, VA 23510).

SO WHY SHOULD PEOPLE
WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES?
We’ve found that people with intellectual disabilities are happiest when they make friends based on
shared interests, not a shared diagnosis. That’s why Hope House provides supportive living services to
adults with intellectual disabilities in their own homes — no matter how complex their situation may be.
Funds raised from the twice-yearly Stockley Gardens Arts Festival and sales from the Hope House
Thrift Shop help us assist with housing, transportation, medical needs, and various other necessities for
the people we support in Hampton Roads.
1981: The credit bureau became an affiliate of Equifax, then
CBI, one of the three national credit report organizations in
the country.
1986: The Retail Merchants Association of Tidewater
acquired the Credit Bureau of Suffolk and expanded its
services to Franklin and Isle of Wight County.
1998: To reinforce its original mission as a retail association,
the company expanded to offer a Retail Services division,
providing training, library resources, marketing and
government relations services, and meeting room space
for local retailers.
2001: The credit reporting files of Retail Alliance were
acquired by Equifax, a national credit reporting company.
In turn, Equifax expanded the Retail Alliance sales and
marketing area. This expansion more than doubled the
Retail Alliance sales territory.
2010: Retail Alliance purchased its corporate office located
at 838 Granby Street, downtown Norfolk.
2011: Retail Alliance Foundation was formed as the
charitable and educational arm of Retail Alliance. A
percentage of all dues collected go directly to the funding
of the Foundation.
2012: Retail Alliance Business Solutions Inc was formed
as a for-profit corporation to represent Equifax reporting
services throughout the state of Virginia.
Today Retail Alliance Business Solutions serves over 1,200
credit reporting customers with gross sales of over eight
million dollars.
2004: Continuing our strategic plan to get back to our
association roots, Retail Alliance sold its mortgage
reporting operation and Retail Alliance Recovery Services.
2005: 5755 Poplar Hall Drive sold. After the sale of our
business assets, our building on Poplar Hall Drive was
much larger than we needed to operate. We found leased
space at 500 East Plume Street in downtown Norfolk.

Retail Alliance
Foundation
The Retail Alliance Foundation was created in 2011 to
support charitable and educational activities on behalf
of Retail Alliance.
The guidelines stipulate that the activities must have
a link to the retail industry as determined by the
Foundation’s Board of Directors.
A percentage of all membership dues goes directly to
the funding of the Foundation.
During 2012, YMCA, Children’s Hospital of the Kings
Daughter, and Old Dominion University were the
recipients of our charitable givings.

Retail Alliance held two Post-Election Legislative Forums in
2012. The first Forum was on the Southside at the Retail
Alliance office on Tuesday, November 13. The second
Forum was on the Peninsula at the Crowne Plaza Hampton
Marina Hotel on Friday, November 16.
ABOUT LEGISLATIVE FORUMS
Retail Alliance hosts Legislative Forums twice
a year; once on the Southside and once on the
Peninsula. The legislative forums will be held two
months before the General Assembly Session
begins, giving members the opportunity to ask
their legislators questions about upcoming issues
that will affect small business owners in Virginia.
Both provided our members with the opportunity to meet
and have a panel discussion with their local legislators.
Specifically, members were afforded the opportunity to
ask questions about issues which have an impact on them
as small business owners.
All four legislators provided invaluable insight into
legislation that is of great concern to our members.
This year, the discussion was particularly focused on
the Federal Healthcare Mandate and its impact on
small business owners in Virginia, as well as the major
transportation issues that Virginia is currently facing, such
as tolls, the maintenance budget, and lack of funding for
new transportation projects.
Senator Kenneth Alexander and Delegate Rick Morris
attended the Southside Forum, and Senator John Miller
and Delegate David Yancey attended the Peninsula Forum.

Our hospitable members hosted R2R open houses
throughout the year and delighted their peers with an
array of hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
Nuñez Jewelers, in Virginia Beach, entertained us with a fun
gemstone game and awed us with their displays. Peninsula
members gathered to welcome their new Membership
Director at Smoke BBQ. We enjoyed shopping high end
consignment at Evangeline’s Closet while partaking in
delicious appetizers from Munchies Snack Shack.
Kathy Knack hosted us at her Interior Designs business
and treated lucky winners to beautiful door prizes. Our
generous members donated an amazing assortment of
door prizes for the huge turnout at Unusual Designs.
Virginia Sports Hall of Fame hosted a family friendly
evening complete with baseball themed snacks from The
Coffee Shoppe. Rooms, Blooms and More celebrated their
10 year anniversary with us. Members were given a behind
the scene tour of the newest Goodwill in North Suffolk.
During the second half of the year, Uno’s in Norfolk put on
an amazing spread and spoiled attendees with terrific door
prizes from neighboring businesses.
After an expansion, Simply Unique showed off their new
store and beautiful aquarium. Chesapeake Square Mall
treated us to a great spread of food at Woody’s. The most
creative food display of the year was Amory’s seaside
vegetable scene complete with blue ranch dressing
“ocean.”

Our popular Retail 2 Retail networking events
continue to attract retailers from the Hampton Roads
area interested in connecting with their peers.
The events are hosted by Retail Alliance members
and are held the third Tuesday of each month on the
Southside and the first Tuesday every month on the
Peninsula. See Event Calendar on page 16.
The Retail 2 Retail event is a great opportunity to
network with other business owners, learn new
things and visit some unique and inviting venues.
The event is free to members and guests are always
welcome.
Get even more exposure for your business by
donating a door prize or consider being a food/
beverage sponsor. Members may choose to host one
of these events in their store or choose to sponsor a
Retail 2 Retail in an alternative location.
Hosting and/or sponsoring a Retail 2 Retail usually
costs the business around $300. The host/sponsor
will receive the following unique promotional
opportunities:

Name prominence with branding of the event
Recognition by Retail Alliance in all marketing
materials regarding the event (promotional
materials, e-mails and Retail Angles newsletter)
Company logo and name on all event signage and
marketing materials.

If you missed the R2R at Bangkok Garden in Williamsburg,
then you missed a remarkable feast. Philip Michael
Fashion for Men gave away some very impressive door
prizes and had some memorable desserts custom made
for the attendees. Members toured the photo studio of
RGB Imaging and learned the latest about Google photos
for their businesses.
Countryside Gardens hosted the December R2R in what
has become a lovely annual tradition.
Retail Alliance hosted the year end Retail 2 Retail with our
Holiday Open House.

MediaFest
MediaFest 2012 was held in Virginia Beach and featured
43 exhibitors and approximately 400 attendees. Attendees
received a free bag at registration and those who completed

Retail Alliance hosts an annual trade show to
showcase Hampton Roads media, while providing
exposure to local businesses. In addition, impactful
educational seminars are offered. Local merchants

In May 2012 Retail Alliance rolled out the red carpet to
the finalists for the annual “ROTY” awards. Following the
theme of “A Red Carpet Affair”, retailers were greeted in
the historic Wells Theater’s stunning rotunda by the stars
of days gone by.
The Hurrah Players dressed as award winning celebrities
such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Charlie Chaplin and many
more.
Catering Concepts created a stunning display of delightful
foods surrounded by decorative film reels and complete
with an ice sculpture of the Oscar statue, provided

Ceremonies for the evening.
Nearly two hundred attendees enjoyed hearing from
Secretary of Commerce & Trade, Jim Cheng, who spoke

Entrepreneur.”
A rambunctious live auction took place and members
bid to win a private party catered by the Iron Chefs. The
proceeds from the auction benefited The Foodbank of
Southeastern Virginia. Two new categories were added:

Year.” Winners of this award are thrilled to show off

Since 2008, Retail Alliance has conducted the Retailer

Virginia Retail Loss Prevention Conference
(VRLPC) and Loss Prevention Taskforce
Every merchant at one time or another has experienced
“shrinkage”. Shrinkage is defined as the loss of merchandise
through employee theft, counterfeit cards and bills, vendor
fraud and administrative error. Just how much loss can be
modified by retailers who are informed and prepared.
In 2012 nearly two hundred attendees heard from regional
and national authorities on topics such as Counterfeiting,
Utilizing Customer Service to Reduce Shrinkage, Converting
from Analog to IPCCTVA, Effective Store Layout, Homeland
Security, and Public Private Partnership. The Taskforce
selected award winners Det. Ralph Ferrell for Law
Enforcement Agent of the Year and Peter Scianna for Loss
Prevention Manager of the Year.
Attendees heard from two nationally recognized speakers:
Richard T. Mellor, Vice President of Loss Prevention at the
National Retail Federation and Dr. Hollinger, Professor of
Criminology, Law & Society at the University of Florida,
who presented the National Retail Security Survey results.

The Retail Alliance Virginia Retail Loss Prevention
Conference is the most comprehensive event of its
kind in the state.

ABOUT EDUCATIONAL FORUMS
Throughout the year, Retail Alliance coordinates
educational forums. These forums include a hot
breakfast for a small price and bring quality speakers
to our members.
The educational forums take place on both the
Southside and Peninsula. Because we know most of
our members need to get to their stores to open up
shop, Forums are from 8:00-9:00 AM with networking
starting at 7:30. Forums are the perfect venue to
begin building partnerships and relationships with
fellow members.
Having trouble making it to our educational programs,

past classes.

Retail Alliance conducted a membership survey in
October and November 2012 to find out what’s important
to our members and how we are performing. The survey
was conducted using online and telephone methodology.
80 online surveys were completed and 30 telephone
surveys (110 total retailer and associate members).
Typically we describe an Associate Member as providing
a service and a Retail Member having a storefront and
selling a product.

We surveyed a wide variety of industries but the majority
(38.5%) were categorized as independent retailers.
Nearly half employed between 1-5 people, 21% employed
6-11 people, 10% employed 12-20 people, 5% employed
21-40 people, 3% employed 41-60, and 13% employed
61+ people.
Our Networking Events were the initial reason why 66.9%
of people joined Retail Alliance. This was followed by our
Education Forums (37.7%) and Signature Events (22.3%).
In terms of events that people have attended, our
networking Retail 2 Retail events are the most popular
(46.9%), followed by our educational Retail Roundtables
(41.5%), and MediaFest (31.5%).
Legislative issues of importance: Local taxes (56.9% very
important), Internet Sales Tax/Competition (49.2% very
important), Transportation (34.6% very important).
Most respondents had a clear understanding of the
benefits offered by Retail Alliance. The level of support
provided by Retail Alliance representatives was also rated
highly and the majority of respondents were satisfied
with their membership.

Ambassador Program (Legislative)
During the 45 or 60-day legislative session, Ambassadors
receive regular legislative summaries listing the status of
bills identified by the Retail Alliance and the Virginia Retail
Federation staff as potentially impacting retailers and
retailing in Virginia.

particular bills that require immediate attention. A typical
action alert describes the bill in question, indicates the
position taken by Retail Alliance and the Virginia Retail

RETAIL ALLIANCE
The Retail Pulse is a holiday sales survey conducted with
retailers of all sizes across Hampton Roads. The aim of
the survey is to take a reading of the market after a major
sales period such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother’s Day,
Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, etc.
Participants of the survey will be given exclusive full
results of the study to see how the local retail industry is
performing and also see how they are performing against
other retailers in the same category.
Topline results will be provided to the media, with the
possibility of media exposure for the retailer and follow-up
commentary.
The Retail Alliance Speakers Bureau features a compiled
list of recommended speakers for signature events,
roundtable meetings, training seminars and workshops
displayed in a detailed binder. The Speakers Bureau was
designed to identify, rate and track speakers on a specific
topic.
One to four speakers are featured under each educational
topic. Each speaker is identified by their topic, bio, photo
and rate sheet.
The ratings are determined by Retail Alliance members
based on a simple four to five question survey. The survey
cards are distributed to members after every speaker
presentation at retail roundtables, seminars, workshops,
etc.
We will also be publishing some results in our online and
print newsletters.
The Speakers Bureau binder is available to Retail Alliance
members who need a speaker recommendation for a
particular topic.

Retail Crime Alert LLC
The Retail Crime Alert System is an alert system provided
by Retail Crime Alert LLC for Retail Alliance in order to keep
businesses abreast of local crime situations that occur
throughout Hampton Roads.
The idea of this service came from the Retail Alliance Loss
Prevention Task Force. The Task Force is made up of local
retail members, law enforcement officers and security
company partners. The Task Force meets monthly in order
to network, educate and discuss services that will help
reduce shrinkage.
About the System
The Retail Crime Alert System transmits information
exactly as received from area law enforcement agencies,
to businesses and security professionals regarding crimes
affecting them such as fraudulent checks, credit cards,
shoplifting rings, carjacking, terrorist threats and other
community situations.
The information is supplied by local law enforcement
officials located throughout Hampton Roads. Law
enforcement and public safety officials can post alerts
which will be sent verbatim immediately to all subscribers
via email.

transmitted to, or accessed
by, registered users exactly as
provided by law enforcement
