Highlights of this year’s programme include
an insight into the making of Coraline from
LAIKA’s Claire Jennings (Coraline producer)
and Brian Van’t Hul (Coraline visual effects
supervisor), the presentation of the Lifetime
Achievement Award to Tony Fish and
retrospectives of the work of Priit Pärn and
Jonas Odell. In addition we have screenings
of Up (3D) and Fantastic Mr Fox, as well as a
collection of Joanna Quinn’s favourite films
and a retrospective of Dutch animation.
BAF Game, in strong partnership with the
University of Bradford and Game Republic,
returns with a packed programme including
Ian Livingstone from Eidos, Sony London
Studios and a Pixelh8 performance. This
popular strand explores the connections
between video games, animation and film.

Claire Jennings - The Making of Coraline

Claire Jennings, producer of Coraline and President
of Entertainment at Laika Inc, introduces a
screening of Coraline, together with a behind the
scenes look at how Coraline was made. Claire started at LAIKA as the Producer for Coraline
before being named President of Entertainment
in 2009.
Before coming to LAIKA in Portland, she was
named “Producer of the Year for Animated
Theatrical Motion Pictures,” along with Nick
Park, by the Producers Guild of America for the
Oscar and BAFTA Award-winning feature film
Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit
(2005). The award joined a long list of honors
garnered throughout a career as an independent
and studio producer,development and production
executive, and project originator, making her one
of the most respected names in the animation
industry. In addition to Wallace and Gromit, she
has produced multiple award-winning animated
shorts and television series including the Oscar
and BAFTA Award-winning animated short Father
and Daughter, the Oscar-nominated and BAFTA
Award-winning animated short The Canterbury
Tales, and the Oscar and BAFTA nominated short
film Jolly Roger. She also developed and produced
the BBC animated television series The Big Knights
alongside its two directors, produced the BBC
series Stressed Eric for Absolutely Productions, and
was executive producer of HIT Entertainment’s
British children’s TV series Pingu.

& The Visual Effects Challenges

Brian Van’t Hul, Visual Effects Supervisor at
Laika, will present an overview of the stereo
and visual effects challenges of shooting the
stopmotion feature Coraline. Coraline is the
first major stop-motion animated feature to be
shot in stereoscopic 3D. A graduate of Montana State University’s Film,
Television and Photography Department, Brian
Van’t Hul has consistently followed a passion
for cinematography, art, engineering and
story-telling. He has had the opportunity to
do various jobs in the film industry, covering
miniature, live action and digital lighting, visual
effects supervising, location plate photography
and second unit directing. Before supervising
the visual effects on Coraline (2009), he worked
on Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Forrest
Gump (1994), Disclosure (1994), Contact (1997),
all three Lord of the Rings films (2001, 2002,
2003), Master and Commander: The Far Side of
the World (2003), I Robot (2004), The Legend of
Zorro (2005) and King Kong (2005), for which he
won a BAFTA Film Award (Best Achievement in
Special Visual Effects) and also an Oscar for Best
Achievement in Visual Effects.

We are delighted to welcome renowned editor,
Tony Fish, to this year’s festival, as we present
retrospectives of his work and present him
with the BAF09 Lifetime Achievement Award.
Tony has worked with a plethora of awardwinning directors, including Bob Godfrey,
Geoff Dunbar, Erica Russell, Marjut Rimminen,
Gaelle Denis and Suzie Templeton and his body

of work is extensive. Our three retrospectives
can only, therefore, give a representation of the
breadth and depth of his work. An extensive
filmography follows the details of our retrospective
programmes, in recognition of the films we were
unable to screen.
Tony studied photography & film at Bournemouth
& Poole College of Art. His graduation film “DAI
SUE BECCA” (Live Action) was selected by the
British Film Institute as support film in the Italian
season at the National Film Theatre in 1967. He
entered the industry in 1965 as runner/assistant
editor and in 1966 joined the legendary Bob
Godfrey and editor Peter Hearn in Wardour Street,
Peter left for Canada in 1969. The studio worked
on projects for Robert Brownjohn, Gerald Scarfe,
Polanski and John and Yoko etc. In 1972 Tony
became a freelance editor, before joining forces
once again with Peter Hearn to form Picturehead
Productions in 1979, Peter left Picturehead in 1993.
Tony’s editing work has covered Animation, Live
Action, Commercials, TV, and Documentaries. He
is currently Visiting Tutor at The Royal College of
Art, Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University
of Westminster, a role he previously held at the
National Film & Television School.

We are delighted
to welcome Jonas
Odell to BAF
to introduce a
retrospective of his
work and take part
in a Q & A session.
Jonas Odell is partner and co-founder of
Filmtecknarna. Jonas specializes in making films
mixing live action and various mixed media
animation techniques. He has also scripted, coscripted and written the music to a number of the
studio’s productions. Early films that Jonas directed
include “Revolver” (1993) and “Family and Friends”
(2002). His short film “Never Like The First Time! ”
was awarded with the Golden Bear for best short film
in the Berlin Film Festival 2006. His short “Lies” was
awarded as Best international short at the Sundance
film festival 2009. The past years Jonas has also been
a much sought after director for music videos and his
portfolio includes videos for such artists as Erasure,
Goldfrapp, U2 and Franz Ferdinand, for which he
received an award for breakthrough video of the year
at the MTV Music Awards 2004 as well as a Grammy
nomination. Jonas also directs a number of television
commercials each year.

In Conversation with Chris Robinson – Friday 13 Nov, Pictureville Cinema
We are delighted to welcome Priit Pärn to
BAF09. During the festival we are screening two
retrospectives of Priit’s work. He will also be
taking part in a screentalk with Chris Robinson,
Artistic Director of the Ottawa International
Animation Festival as they discuss his career and
screen his latest film Life Without Gabriella Ferri.
Born in 1946 in Tallinn, Priit graduated from the
Department of Biology of University of Tartu in
1970 and afterwards worked at the Botanical
Garden of Tallinn as a plant ecologist. He has been
active as a caricaturist and illustrator since the end
of the 1960s and has done more and more work as
a freelance graphic artist since the early 1980s.
From 1976 to 1994 he worked as an art director
and animated film director at the Joonisfilm
animated film department of Tallinnfilm Studio.
Since 1994 he has worked at Eesti Joonisfilm
Studio. Priit has made 11 animated films of
duration up to 45 minutes, as well as a host
of short films, commercials, etc., for which he
received numerous awards and prizes.
Priit has also worked as a teacher over the
past 18 years. He has taught at film schools in
Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Spain,
Belgium, Holland, France and England and also
held workshops in Australia and Canada. From
1994 to 2007 Pärn was the artistic director of the
Animation Department of the Turku Art Academy
in Finland and from 2006 head of the animation
department in Estonian Art Academy.

THE TRIANGLE (1982)
Does Julia love Victor? Or does Edouard love
Julia? It is difficult to say. In any case, Julia
loves to cook. Victor and Edouard, though, love
to eat. This starting point is entirely adequate
for a dramatic triangle.
TIME OUT (1984)
The hero of this film, which has earned many
awards, is a small cat with a long striped tail.
The little animal bustles about the room doing
morning house chores. He is already busy with
the next one before he has properly completed
the previous one. He becomes hopelessly
confused in his daily routine. Time transforms
radically and assumes fantastic proportions.
BREAKFAST ON THE GRASS (1987)
A film about Anna, Berta, Georg and Edouard,
who realize their idea in spite of humiliating
difficulties.
HOTEL E (1992)
In every wall that separates, one can find a
door. A door which connects. Victor finds such
a door. Faceless, nameless Victor is prepared
to go. Yet every departure is also an arrival.
Every arrival, however, is not a return.
Retrospective 2
1895 (co-director Janno Põldma) (1995)
The animated cartoon “1895” is dedicated to
the centennial of cinema. “1895” is a picture
about the life of brothers Auguste and Louis
Lumière. The cartoon acquaints the public
with so far unknown biographical facts and
events from the life of the two celebrated
brothers who have immortalized their names
as inventors of cinematography. The picture is
an illusion. Is illusion truth? This assertion and
the subsequent question gave the authors of
this cartoon the rights to declare that namely
their version of the life of brothers Lumière
and the birth of cinema was the most original
and unique of all.
Night of the Carrots (1998)
It is highly unlikely that anybody has any
premonition of the approaching catastrophe.
Least of all Diego, a man whose name can be
read from his face. But suddenly your shoes
are filled with water. The click of Julia’s heels
echoes in the corridor. Underground no longer
speaks in a whisper. This is how it usually
begins… And at some point, the only hope that
remains is - the Night of the Carrots.
Karl and Marilyn (2003)
Karl is tired of the heavy burden of fame that
oppresses him and he decides to liberate himself from it. He returns to life among so called
ordinary people, after which he crosses paths
with fame-seeking Marilyn. Ordinary Karl is
the force that turns Marilyn into an idol of the
masses. But not for long…

A dramatic story about love, locked doors, a
faceless thief, a wounded stork, a lost laptop and
virtual prostitutes, the O’Key sisters... There is no
Gabriella Ferri, but there is almost happy end.

The British animator Joanna Quinn has
established a considerable international
reputation for her work, winning over 80 awards
including two EMMYs and five BAFTAs. In an age
of computerised 3D animation, her distinctive
hand-drawn style, combined with acute
observational skills and an incisive wit, marks
her out as a unique filmic artist.

Drawings that Move – Gallery Two
In this first-ever gallery retrospective of Joanna’s
work, audiences will be taken on a journey
starting with the artist’s early drawings and
animations to some of her very latest, gaining
an insight into the creative and business
processes involved in running a successful
animation studio along the way.
Over the past 25 years Joanna Quinn’s love
for drawing and movement has been the
driving force behind a beautifully distinctive
body of animation – all hand drawn on paper
and cels. It includes her signature character;
Welsh housewife, Beryl; an Oscar-nominated
and BAFTA and Emmy-winning film based on
Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales; and the Charmin
Bears, whose adverts for toilet paper are
recognised all over the globe.

Learn from Joanna Quinn herself as she leads
this adults-only life drawing class set against
the backdrop of her exhibition Drawings that
Move: The Art of Joanna Quinn. Come along
and spend the evening in Joanna’s company as
she talks you through the art of drawing, and
offers her own insights into the work on the
surrounding walls.
We’re looking for someone to volunteer as
the life model for this unique event. If you
are (or know) someone who encapsulates
the personality of Joanna’s infamous and
curvaceous creation Beryl, we’d love to hear

of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary
Dinkle (Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of
Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Hoffman), a severely obese,
44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in the chaos
of New York City.
As Mary and Max chronicles Mary’s trip from adolescence to
adulthood, and Max’s passage from middle to old age, it explores
a bond that survives much more than the average friendship’s upsand-downs.
Like Elliot’s Oscar® winning animated short Harvie Crumpet, Mary
and Max is both hilarious and poignant as it takes us on a journey
that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism,
where babies come from, obesity, kleptomania, sexual differences,
trust, copulating dogs, religious differences, agoraphobia and many
more of life’s surprises.

for Animation Film (NIAF), introduces two programmes which give an enlightening
overview of Dutch animation from 1937 to 2008. Mette manages preservation
projects, film programmes and exhibitions. She has published widely on animation

Four years in the making, Jirí Trnka’s delightful
and faithful stop-motion puppet adaptation
of Shakespeare’s play won a distinction from
the Jury at Cannes. The texture, detail and wit
of its character and production designs are
a wondrous response to the emotions and
imagery evoked by Shakespeare’s language.
Armored Theseus and black-curled Demetrius
resemble Greek heroes lifted from a classical
frieze; Titania and the shape-shifting Oberon
and Puck might be extra-terrestrials; in Theseus’
exquisite Athenian palace, the rude mechanicals’
shambolic performance is pitted against rival
entertainments resembling fore-runners of
Cirque du Soleil. The forest – a riot of lilac,
green and midnight blue – is home to creatures
familiar and fantastical (acorns sprout arms
and legs to become bustling servants to the
fairy queen).
Trnka, dubbed ‘the Walt Disney of the East’,
never lip-synched his wooden puppets with
dialogue, preferring music to the spoken word.
The original version used only sparse Czech
narration by actor Rudolf Pellar, foregrounding
composer Václav Trojan’s classical themes, which
match the action’s changes of mood and tempo,
blending full orchestra, solo harpsichord and
other instruments (Lysander serenades Hermia
with his flute), boy choristers and solo voices.
The score and the fluidly graceful stop-motion
(equally impressive for humans and animals)
sometimes give the film the quality of a Dreamballet. The English soundtrack, added for UK
cinema release in 1961, features Richard Burton
as Narrator and snatches of Shakespearean
dialogue delivered by top English actors,
including Joss Ackland (Quince), Barbara Jefford
(Titania) and Alec McCowen (Bottom).
DANIEL ROSENTHAL, author of 100 Shakespeare
Films (BFI Publishing, 2007) will be giving an
illustrated lecture on animated Shakespeare
followed by the screening of A Midsummer
Night’s Dream.

Pat Raine Webb was
involved with the Bradford
Animation Festival since
it began in 1993, advising
on programmes and
taking part in selection
panels, before becoming
chair of the international
jury. During those sixteen
years Pat shared with all
of us her enthusiasm and
passion for animation.
I first met Pat six years ago – it was my first
Bradford Animation Festival and I really had no
idea who anyone was or what to expect.
I was supposed to be looking after the jury, but
as the festival progressed it was quite clearly the
other way round. Pat was chair of the jury and
soon took me under her wing – introduced me
to the other jury members and guests and made
sure that I got a warm welcome to the industry
that played such an important part in her life.
From that point on we became firm friends –
meeting along with Margot to talk about ideas
for the following year’s festival, who we might
have on the jury and who would be good to have
as guests. Once the work was done, the three of
us would spend time talking about their love of
animation. Each November we looked forward
to seeing both Pat and Margot and knew that
we would be assured of an enjoyable time.
Pat had such passion and enthusiasm and was
such a warm and generous person – always
ready to help and give her time and support.
She was also a firm favourite with our young
festival volunteers (the BAFettes). One of Pat’s
many strengths was her ability to relate to
young people. She was a mentor to many and
offered support and encouragement to those
starting out in animation. My enduring memory
of Pat will be of her at last year’s festival party
dancing to YMCA and giving students who were
50 years younger a real run for their money.
I’m sure that I speak for everyone involved with
the festival, both past and present, in saying that
it was a great pleasure to have known Pat.

Professor Paul Wells is Director of the Animation
Academy in the School of Art and Design at
Loughborough University, and has published
widely in the field of animation. He was also
series consultant for the BBC’s ‘Animation
Nation’ and writer and presenter of the award
winning radio series on comedy, ‘Laughing
Matters’.

Woof Wan-Bau
Woof Wan-Bau is the alias of film and animation
director Joji Koyama. Featured in 2005’s Cannes
New Directors Showcase, the Creative Futures
Awards 2006 and the winner of the SHOTS New
Director Award 2008, Woof Wan-Bau continues
to develop his reputation as an innovative film
maker, and one of Britain’s brightest talents. After
graduating from Goldsmiths College in London,
he went on to direct a music video for ‘My Angel
Rocks Back and Forth’, for Four Tet. This led to
a Young Guns Award for Best Animated music
video and the Public Choice Award at the British
Animation Awards. He has since worked with the
likes of Coldcut, Mogwai, Matthew Herbert, The
Duke Spirit and Calvin Harris.

Johnny Hardstaff
Jonas Odell
Johnny Hardstaff is a designer and director.
Represented by Ridley Scott Associates (London)
and Little Minx (Los Angeles), Hardstaff has
directed and designed innovative moving image
work across a broad spectrum of both commercial
and non-commercial strands of the visual arts.
Mass media clients include Radiohead, Sony,
Orange, Toshiba, Sony PlayStation and the BBC
amongst others. Amongst his most notable works
to date remain ‘History of Gaming’ and ‘Future of
Gaming’ (two politically provocative short films
designed to first engender then test corporate
patronage, now inducted into the National Film
Archive), the Radiohead film ‘Like Spinning Plates’
(long format two track experimental music video),
and increasingly a contemporary raft of innovative
and experimental design based commercials
(Sony / Toshiba / Orange / Asics / LG).
Jonas Odell is partner and co-founder of Filmtecknarna.
Jonas specializes in making films mixing live action
and various mixed media animation techniques. He
has also scripted, co-scripted and written the music to
a number of the studio’s productions. Early films that
Jonas directed include “Revolver” (1993) and “Family
and Friends” (2002). His short film “Never Like The
First Time! ” was awarded with the Golden Bear for
best short film in the Berlin Film Festival 2006. His
short “Lies” was awarded as Best international short
at the Sundance film festival 2009. The past years
Jonas has also been a much sought after director for
music videos and his portfolio includes videos for such
artists as Erasure, Goldfrapp, U2 and Franz Ferdinand,
for which he received an award for breakthrough video
of the year at the MTV Music Awards 2004 as well as
a Grammy nomination. Jonas also directs a number of
television commercials each year.
Tom Haines (of Brains and Hunch).
Since graduating as a composer from the Guildhall
School of music and drama in 2000 Tom has has
been composing and making music for Moving
Image and Theatre. Tom has been specialising in
making music and sound for animation. He has
written music and sound for animators and studios. In 2003 Tom set up music production company
Brains and Hunch with fellow composer Chris
Branch. Since then they have been composing and
producing music, foley and sound for Film, TV and
Animation from their London Studio. Tom is also
a founder member of music ensembles Quartet
Electronische and The London Snorkelling Team as
well as an associate artist of Filter Theatre.
Steve Smith is an award-winning animation director
and co-founder of TRUNK Animation Studio in London.
He has worked in the animation industry for eight
years following his graduation from the Royal College
of Art in 1999 with an MA in Animation. In 2002, Steve
won the 72-hour Big Brother style show for animators
Celmates, broadcast on Channel 4, with his film Barry,
and picked up Broadcast Magazine’s Award for Best
Young Animator. More recently, Steve picked up two
awards at Annecy for FunFacts (Best Educational Film)
and Annuals (Best Music Video), and a coveted British
Animation Award for FunFacts (Best Film/TV Graphics).
TRUNK also scooped a BAFTA for their work on BBC
Newsround’s On Poverty special.

Selling democracy to rebuild Europe from The Shoemaker and the Hatter to
the making of Animal Farm.

The Shoemaker & the Hatter 1949
A prize-winning cartoon made by the same
husband and wife team that later turned
Orwell’s Animal Farm into a classic of animated
storytelling. Two neighbours, a shoemaker and
a hatter, argue about how best to recover their
livelihoods after the war. The hatter believes
in producing few hats at a high profit per hat,
protected by tariff. The shoemaker sees the
need for lots of shoes. He wants to lower their
cost through mass production and make his
profit through export and free trade. After many
adventures, the shoemaker eventually proves
that free trade can bring prosperity to them
both. Since the free trade vs. protectionism
argument is still in today’s headlines, the film
is as fresh as ever. One of the most popular
Marshall Plan films, it was shown in eleven
language versions in movie houses throughout
Western Europe. Produced by John Halas and
Joy Batchelor Ltd, London, for ECA, supervised by
Philip Stapp. 16 min, 1949
Think of the Future 1953
As time went by the Marshall Plan films became
more and more concerned with increasing
production. Here George, an everyman worker,
feels nostalgic for the good old days but is
shown by the narrator how new production
techniques will change life for the better. Better
methods production, fair play and fair prices.
Without fear (clip) 1951
Directed by Peter Sachs this is one of the more
overtly propaganda films of the Marshall Plan.
The strong message is matched by powerful
graphic images. What started out as the
reconstruction of war torn Europe developed
in to a strong anti totalitarian message that
heralded the Cold War.
Animal Farm (clip) 1954
Although this was not a Marshall Plan film it
was made as direct result of Halas & Batchelor’s
work for the Marshall Plan. Adapted from
George Orwell’s satirical anti-communist fable
the film remains a landmark in the history of
animation. A scathing indictment of Stalinism
and totalitarian regimes, it tells the story of
a group of animals who take over their farm
after a revolutionary coup. But their idealism
is thwarted and they find that, even among
themselves “some are more equal than others.”
Unlike the Marshall Plan films Animal Farm was
at least partly funded by the newly emerging
CIA and was not only the first animated
entertainment feature to be made in Britain but
one of the first of the Cold War.
Animated Yorkshire is a regional organisation
for animation professionals. We offer training,
screening opportunities and peer support.
Our members will share their experiences of
successful animation projects, showing that
animation can be made anywhere and that you
can earn your living working outside of London
or Bristol. Animation people from outside of our
region are also welcome to attend.
Special guests for this event to give extra
inspiration are The Brothers McLeod. Award
winning Myles and Greg McLeod will show their
work and share some of their secrets of success.
The award winning, BAFTA nominated Brothers
McLeod (Greg and Myles) have a track record
in creating animation for TV, web, and film.
They are represented by Aardman Animations
as Commercials Directors and have directed
campaigns for Skittles, Stena Line, and Guinness
amongst others. They have written and directed
series for BBC (Pedro and Frankensheep) and
Tate Galleries (Art Sparks), and written for a
range of TV, Games and web projects (Noddy,
SpongeBob SquarePants, NHS Relationships
and Sex). They have a well established YouTube
channel and have had several internet successes
including Spamland and Fuggy Fuggy which was
picked up by MTV and Mondo Media. In 2009,
they were nominated for a BAFTA in the Short
Animation category for their film Codswallop.

Curtis Jobling is a veteran of the animation
and publishing world, working as an author,
illustrator, production designer and concept
developer. His early work in film included propmaking on Wallace & Gromit’s Oscar-winning A
Close Shave and as a puppet painter on the Tim
Burton movie, Mars Attacks!
He is probably best known as the designer of the
BAFTA winning BBC/Nickelodeon show Bob the
Builder and as the creator of the new awardwinning BBC show Frankenstein’s Cat, based
upon his book of the same name.
Curtis will not only be introducing a
retrospective look at his own career path and
portfolio, featuring rare artwork, character
designs and animation, but also leading a series

Some Thoughts on Animation and
Film Genre…
In some critical studies, animation is sometimes
viewed as a ‘genre’, a category or type of film
practice like the Western, Science Fiction or
Horror. This is categorically NOT the case.
Animation is a form, and consequently, cannot
be reduced to a set of core generic traits or
narrative expectations. Rather, it can take such
traits and expectations, and re-work or play
with them by using the rich and varied tools
and approaches, which inform the diverse
achievements in the animated form. More than
any other mass-mediated form, animation
can choose its weapons. CGI, 3D stop-motion,
cut-out, collage, clay, sand on glass, digital data
– you name it, animation can deploy it in its
revision or re-interpretation of generic motifs.
This year’s BAF stings build on this idea. In the
shortest of short forms each sting operates as
an engagement with and playful summation of
some of the dominant traits of live action

genre film. This is not to say that live action film
is not constantly mixing and matching generic
possibilities, but animation can condense and
conflate such invention into the shortest time,
and often with the maximum of impact and
effect. It is equally clear that even within generic
forms there are many variations. The German
Expressionist psychological horror differs from
the Gothic Ghost tale or the slasher movie; space
operas often depart from alien encounter stories
or time travel movies but all are science fiction.
Documentaries might be verité style or fly-on-thewall or interview led yet all exist as non-fiction
film essays. Even in the traditional cartoon, while
we might see variations on silent cinema slapstick
and impossible spectacle, this varies from nation
to nation; Disney, Warner Bros, Fleischer and UPA
shorts differ from each other, and are certainly
of another order from those made in Zagreb,
Tokyo or Shanghai. Even so, stings made for BAF
show how diverse and various generic motifs
can be, while demonstrating than animation can
present a high degree of seemingly incongruous
or fantastical imagery in an entirely coherent and
engaging way.
As well as offering variations on established
genres, animation possesses genres of its
own, based either on the techniques in which
work is made, or through a recognition of the
underlying narrative or thematic structures of
many animated films. The self-evident illusionism
of animation as a form, points to the selfconscious construction of each animated film,
and consequently how particular configurations
amount to common practices. These include
‘primal’ animation based on interior states of
experience like dreams, fantasies and trains of
thought, or ‘deconstructed’ animation, overtly
revealing the process by which animation has
been made and used for specific effects.
Further, animation thrives on ‘micro-narratives’.
Even here, there are genres - shorts based
on lists, single incidents, one conversational
exchange, a specific incidence of metamorphosis,
or an iconic image. The BAF stings are perfect
examples of such micro-narratives revealing
macro generic worlds.

Hyunsoek Lee is currently working toward a
PhD at Loughborough University where his
research includes creating digital animation
that simulates and explores the traditional

Verbal Vigilante Music. They write, record and
produce original music for the Animation, Film,

Animation Festival Awards Ceremony. Find out the result
of the jury’s decision and discover which films from our
official selection go home with a much-coveted BAF Award.
The 2009 awards will once again be hosted by stop-frame
animation legend and all-round entertainer Barry Purves.
The awards ceremony is preceded by a drinks reception in
the Museum Foyer at 7pm and will conclude with the annual
closing night party at the Midland Hotel from 10.00pm.
Don’t forget to vote for your favourite film in competition
and decide who takes home the celebrated Audience Award.
All the films will be screened several times during the
Festival, just fill out a voting form and choose your favourite
film from all competition categories. All forms submitted
will be entered into a prize draw and one lucky person will
receive a special mystery prize.

than 800 submissions we’ve managed to
whittle our selection down to just 63 films.
The short-listed nominees in each category
will fight it out for one of our famed BAF
Awards as chosen by our international jury of
animation experts. In addition, a Special Jury
Award will go to a film the jury feels should be
highly commended and the Grand Prix will be
presented to the best film from all categories.
Kerry Drumm
Kerry Drumm left a post at Aardman
Animation in 2007 to conduct a PhD with
the Animation Academy Research Group at
Loughborough University. Kerry is also an
advisor for BAF and a member ABAC, the
steering group to developing the British
animation archive museum. Kerry animated
on the recently released feature Bunny and
the Bull (Paul King, Mighty Boosh) with Andy
Chong and Gareth Howell and has had her
work featured in a number of books.

Margot Grimwood
Margot was originally involved with a theatre
company in London, but then turned to
publishing. Involved with animation since
1977, she has been a Director of ASIFA UK since
1985, and is the editor of Dope Sheet magazine.
She has assisted at numerous international
animation events including Hiroshima, Zagreb
and Annecy and has been on several festival
juries including BAF and LIAF.
Priit Pärn
Born 1946 in Tallinn, Priit Pärn graduated from
the Department of Biology of University of Tartu
in 1970 and afterwards worked at the Botanical
Garden of Tallinn as a plant ecologist. He has
been active as a caricaturist and illustrator
since the end of the 1960s and has done more
and more work as a freelance graphic artist
since the early 1980s. Over the past 20 years
Pärn has had over 30 solo exhibitions in various
European countries and Canada. From 1976 to
1994 he worked as an art director and animated
film director at the Joonisfilm animated film
department of Tallinnfilm Studio. Since 1994
he has worked at Eesti Joonisfilm Studio. Priit
has made 11 animated films of duration up
to 45 minutes as well as a host of short films,
commercials, etc., for which he has received
numerous honours and prizes, including the
“ASIFA Life Achievement Award“ in 2002.
Joanna Quinn
Born in Birmingham in 1962, Joanna studied graphic
design at Middlesex Polytechnic, where she began
work on Girls’ Night Out, the first of the awardwinning series of Beryl films. Joanna has been a jury
member and had retrospectives at animation festivals
throughout the world and has received numerous
awards including, BAFTAs, EMMYs and a Cartoon D’Or,
as well as a nomination for an Academy Award. In
1987 she formed Beryl Productions with writer and
producer Les Mills, where they combine commercial
work such as the campaigns for Whiskas and Charmin
with their own individual films such as Body Beautiful,
Elles, Britannia and Dreams and Desires – Family Ties.
Chris Robinson
Chris Robinson is a Canadian writer, journalist and
biographer. His writing has been translated into
many languages. He is also the Artistic director of
the Ottawa International Animation Festival. His
programming has been celebrated and denounced
for placing emphasis on non-traditional forms of
animation and independent creators. In 2004, he was
awarded the President’s Award by ASIFA East for his
contributions to independent animation. Robinson’s
animation books include: Estonian Animation:
Between Genius and Utter Illiteracy (2006), Unsung
Heroes of Animation (2005), The Animation Pimp
(2007), Canadian Animation: Looking for a Place to
Happen (2008), Ballad of A Thin Man: In Search of
Ryan Larkin (2008), and Animators Unearthed (2010).
He is currently working on, Japanese Animation:
Time out of Mind, a rather strange little book about
independent Japanese animation. The book is due out
in August 2010.

‘Disney’s Folly’ to Disney/Pixar:
Animated Features
Since Walt Disney’s pioneering Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs made in 1937, animation has enjoyed
its greatest public profile in its feature length form.
Though seen as ‘Disney’s Folly’ at the time, courting
the risk that no audience could endure watching ‘a
cartoon’ for more than a short time, Snow White
was to actually define animation as an art form, and
crucially, move animation from a supporting role on
the film bill to the headline act.
Disney, nevertheless, craved further cultural
recognition, developing Fantasia (1941) to
demonstrate how animation could be deployed in
the service of illustrating classical music. For some,
the interpretation of Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’
– once the cause of a riot when it was first played
– was the epitome of bad taste; for others, it was
an example of how Modernist aspiration in sound
and image had found ready bedfellows in dissonant
chords and abstract imagery.
Elsewhere, though, animation was already finding
different forms and applications. The first full length
animation, for example, was actually El Apostol
(1919), made in Argentina, and Lotte Reiniger’s
cut-out classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed
(1926) remains a defining moment in animation
history. It is curious to think that Britain could have
had a far earlier claim to a full length feature if it
had kept The Story of the Flag (1927) as a seventy
minute piece, instead of dividing it into a number of
shorts, again fearing that an audience would never
countenance animation running so long. Halas &
Batchelor’s Animal Farm (1954) ultimately proved to
be Britain’s first full length feature, and was a timely
intervention in demonstrating that animated film
could be a vehicle for serious story-telling, and in
revising the representation of animals in cartoons,

previously almost uniformly understood as funny
caricatures.
Ralph Bakshi was to take this a stage further
in animation’s first ‘XXX’ feature, Fritz the Cat,
(1972) which freely mixed sexual mores and
counterculture attitudes, but arguably, Japan
created the first ‘adult’ feature in A Thousand and
One Nights (1969). The animé long-form has since
produced auteurs like Hayao Miyazaki, Mamuro
Oshii and Satoshi Kon comparable to master live
action directors like Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi.
Animated features worldwide have often drawn
on other literary sources. Ptuschko’s The New
Gulliver (1935) adapts Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’;
Karel Zemen in the former Czechoslovakia makes
A Deadly Invention (1958) based on the stories of
Jules Verne, and recently, Britain’s own Framestore
have worked on the adaptation of Kate DiCamillo’s
The Tale of Despereux (2008)
The CG work of Pixar, Dreamworks and Blue Sky,
and the 3D stop-motion puppet films by Tim Burton
and Henry Selick, Aardman and Laika dominate
contemporary animated features. Proving that
2D is not ‘dead’, though, The Triplets of Belleville
(2003) and Persepolis (2008) deployed fresh graphic
forms. Waltz with Bashir (2008) also showed that
animation could deliver politics as well as punchlines. Animated features then, remain progressive
even as they increasingly define the mainstream,
and re-invent cinema.

The Animator in Residence (AIR) scheme was
launched in 1990 by Channel 4/Museum of
the Moving Image to give talented newcomers
to animation a unique opportunity to develop
their ideas for short films. The scheme
eventually ended in 2004, but for part of this
time the animation gallery at the National
Media Museum was home to the Animator in
Residence booth.

strand opens with a special musical performance
by internationally renowned chip tune
musician Pixelh8. Also known as Matthew C.
Applegate, Pixelh8 creates original music and
accompanying visuals from reprogramming
vintage computer systems such as the ZX
Spectrum, Commodore 64, Game Boy and more.
We are pleased to welcome Pixelh8 to Bradford
to give a live performance of his unique sound
and explain how it’s made.
Have you ever dreamed of going it alone, being
your own boss and starting your own games
company? This panel discussion brings together
business owners from different realms of the
gaming industry to offer advice on how to
overcome the hurdles of starting your own
independent studio.
Sarah Quick, artist at Sheffield-based games
studio, Tuna Technologies, leads an exclusive
hands-on workshop showing how she makes the
models for the soon to be released Cletus Clay
interactive adventure. Billed as a wild and crazy,
no-holds barred, rootin’ tootin’ varmint shootin’
side scrolling platform brawler for home console,
every character and set is modeled in clay before
being photographed and composited into a 3D
environment. Inspired by the likes of Aardman
Animation and 50s B-Movies, this technique
creates a brightly coloured, hand-crafted world.
Places are limited to 10 people.

The panel will be chaired by Alex Wiltshire,
online editor of Edge Magazine. Other panelists

The ASIFA (International Animated Film
Association) Workshop Group is a global
movement represented in 23 countries and
on three continents. Every year a worldwide
animation project takes place, composed of
several regional young people’s workshops. This
year’s theme celebrates the 50th Anniversary of
ASIFA (2010).
Working with professional animator David
Bunting, six families with children aged 10-14
took part in a week long project to make a two
minute film on the theme of peace, human
values and international communication in
August 2009
The project is a partnership between the
National Media Museum and Education
Bradford’s Family Learning Team. The film’s
soundtrack was recorded at Factory St. Studios,
Bradford with the help of producer Darren
Ibbetson.
I have a Dream will be compiled into a show
reel featuring animations made by groups
from around the world and screened at the
Annecy Animation Film Festival 2010, and at the
Animation Festival Hiroshima 2010.

European Coordination
of Film Festivals
The European Coordination of Film Festivals,
a European Economic Interest Group (EEIG), is
composed of 130 festivals of different themes
and sizes, all aiming to promote European cinema. All member countries of the European Union
are represented as well as some other European
countries. The Coordination develops common
activities for its members, through cooperation,
with the aim of promoting European cinema,
improving circulation and raising public awareness. The members pay a fee which finances
these activities, the members also contribute
financially to specific projects. Other sources of
financing are private and public grants, particularly from the European Union. Besides these
common activities, the Coordination encourages
bilateral and multilateral cooperation among its
members.
The Coordination ensures that the issues affecting film festivals are highlighted when the
European Parliament makes policy decisions. The
Coordination distributes a report to these institutions, and in addition to other international
organisations, on film festival matters. The Coordination has produced a code of ethics which has
been adopted by all its members, to encourage
common practise in professional practises. The
Coordination is also an information centre and a
place for festivals to meet.

Broccoli Cinema (108 seats) is a more intimate
space, so is more widely used for showcases
and screenings.
