This means we are entering the holiday season and approaching the end of the year. As the market continues to improve, we are seeing more and more agents enter this great profession. It is great to see our membership grow! During my speech at the Christmas/Inaugural Luncheon last year, I stated “We get by with a little help from our friends.” The past few months brought new challenges for us as an industry. The most visible of those may have been the death of Beverly Carter, a real estate agent in Arkansas. It was wonderful to see so many agents reach out in support for an agent they had never met. Many posted messages on Facebook, and many changed their profile pictures to show a banner in memory of an agent that lived 1,500 miles away. Those who knew Beverly expressed many times over their thanks for this outpouring of love and support. With a little help from our ‘friends’ this year, we built two Have A Heart homes and turned the keys over to a couple of awesome families. We truly appreciate those agents, home builders, sub-contractors and cities who joined together to accomplish this fantastic feat. Once again, we showed the community that we are not simply about listing and selling homes. We are an association that cares about those we serve and who feel a need to give back. This really is a unique business. It brings a whole new meaning to “friendly competition.” I don’t know of many other industries where you get to compete for a listing without taking shots at the competition, but simply stating why you are the best agent for the job. Then, once you have taken the listing, having that same agent you competed against for the listing show the listing and write an offer. You then get to negotiate against that agent to prove to your seller that they made the right choice hiring you. All of this is done in a friendly manner, and then those same agents sit down at a luncheon and eat lunch together. We truly do get by with a little help from our friends! As I wrap up the year and prepare to turn the leadership over to Scott Lalli for 2015, I have spent some time looking back at the year we’ve had and how true that statement is. Personally, I couldn’t have made it through this year without a LOT of help from my friends. Serving as President, Mayor and Broker has taught me a whole new level of time management, and it couldn’t have worked without the support a lot of people. Thank you to all of you who made this year a special one for me – one I will never forget! I definitely couldn’t have done it without “a little help from my friends!” 3 Installation & Christmas Party December 12 th 11:30am at the Davis Conference Center Join us as we install the 2015 Board of Directors and recognize the outgoing Board of Directors and Committee Chairs. First we discussed best practices around staying safe in the office, in the field and at home. This focused on knowledge, awareness and empowerment. Secondly, we had first hand training from a Detective Scott Manookin with Clearfield City. He discussed stats showing that occurrences can happen to anyone and to never feel exempt. Almost 40 agents left more knowledgeable, aware and empowered. Stay Safe! Jared Payne 2014 Education Committee Co-Chair Range Training We all know there is an inherent risk in what we do for a living. We often put people in our cars that we have only met with briefly. We meet complete strangers as they walk through an open house, or we meet them at a home simply because they asked to see inside. There are many steps that can be taken to minimize that risk, and we continue to encourage our agents to take those steps. The Northern Wasatch Association of REALTORS has been addressing agent safety for the past several years. During that time, we have held two self-defense courses at Swanson Tactical where we learned hands-on how to get out of potentially dangerous situations. We have offered several other classroom styles of training where we discussed procedures to put in place in your offices and homes to help avoid putting yourself at risk. We have also conducted several opportunities for agents to get the training necessary to get a Concealed Carry Permit. (Continued on next page…) 7 (Continued from previous page…) This October, we added an additional training for agents that didn’t feel comfortable using the gun they already own and carry, or those who are just considering carrying a gun. Joining together with “Get Some” Guns and Ammo in Layton, agents were trained on how to handle, load, unload and properly care for a handgun. After a couple of hours of classroom training from a former DC Police Officer, they hit the range for some one on one training on proper stance, aiming and firing their weapon. A couple of the participants had never shot a gun but came away with some impressive skills and more prepared to protect themselves in a dangerous situation. One night of shooting on the range is never enough to get someone ready to protect himself, but it was a good starting point for these agents. One group of participants even set up a weekly range visit to ensure they have the proper skills. Mark Shepherd 2014 NWAOR President 8 NOVEMBER Dates to Remember Are you on a NWAOR Committee?
