Wait, Whiskey is spelled two different ways?
In America its whiskey. In the British Isles its whisky. Let’s not talk about spelling.
We Go with Whiskey.
It’s not for nationalistic zeal, and certainly not because we don’t care for what is made across
the pond (we’re not about to turn down that shot of Jameson, if you’re offering). There is
something special about bourbon and rye, those spirits that find their origin on American
soil. In fact, their true home is in the South; not only in Kentucky, but whereever one could
gather some corn, rye, or wheat to distill. Whiskey has been, and continues to be, the everyman
spirit of the United States. Sure, there are plenty of expensive whiskies out there, but we
know more than a few bottles that are both delicious and affordable.
We love rye.
the base spirit of the Manhattan, rye is a spicy, hearty, and warming drink. Requiring over
51% rye, withf the rest made of corn and wheat, it is painstakingly crafted and isn’t as
widely available. Although it’s making a strong comeback, it remains tho underpriced
underdog; and we’re just fine with that. Looking for a recommendation from our staff?
Chances are we’ll point you in the direction of a rye; we think it impacts cocktails in a way
that other whiskeys just can’t.
we love bourbon
It’s made from corn, a heartland staple, and aged in new oak barrels every single time
Bourbon is rich, with a touch of sweetness. We prefer ours Bottled in Bond, which means
it is at least 100 proof (just one reason its a favorite among our staff for a post-shift
adverstisements, there are plenty of workingman’s options to go around. Labels such as
Old Grand-Dad, Old Forester, and Old Fitzgerald quit trying long ago to be in vogue;
they just make good whiskey. Generations have chosen them for years, and they’re in it
for the long haul.
we love wheated bourbon
Wheat provides whiskey a touch of sweetness, even at a high proof. The most sought after
bourbon in the world, Pappy Van Winkle, just so happens to be wheated (and hey, we just might
have some if your interested). Not ready to drop that much change on a drink tonight? Don’t
worry; Old Weller is from the same distillery with the same mash bill.
we love moonshine.
Un-aged whiskey represents the fiery spirit still produced today in the hills hollows,
and branches throught the South. At the Hog, we’re peddling the legal stuff.
It is strong and bright; often reaching 125-140 proof, you’ll get your money’s worth with this
stuff. You’ll also get a taste of your forfathers’ Friday night.

and of course Scotland. But, try as they might American whiskey has our heart.
