NIE Week 2007 - Now I Get It! Improving
The Plain Dealer Educational Services Department www.cleveland.com/nie WINTER 2007 NIE Week 2007 - Now I Get It! Improving Comprehension With Newspapers Newspaper In Education Week 2007, March 5-9, reinforces a positive and relevant lifetime reading habit in students by engaging them with an authentic text - the newspaper. This year’s theme is “Now I Get It! Improving Comprehension With Newspapers.” The NAA Foundation has created a teacher’s guide thanks to the generosity of Abitibi Consolidated, Inc. Activities in the teacher’s guide are designed to help students improve their reading comprehension. Teacher’s control the difficulty of each activity through individual selection of newspaper texts for each activity. Newspaper activities build on students’ knowledge and interest because the content is about their community as well as events and people of interest to them. Newspapers are highly motivational for young people because they are seen as an adult medium and include something of interest for a wide range of readers. Each newspaper section contains its own text structures, which are predictable. When students become familiar with text structures, they will have better control over them and will find it easier to read the newspaper. Order your “free” copy of the NIE Week “Now I Get It! Improving Comprehension With Newspapers” curriculum guide on the back page of this newsletter today! Spring 2007 dates: February 12 - April 20, 2007 Registration Deadline: February 11, 2007. No Late Registrations Permitted. What is SMS? The Ohio Stock Market Simulation (“SMS”) is a motivating approach to learning about the world of economics, finance, current events, math, social studies and technology. In addition to being a great team building activity, the SMS is a tool that reinforces concepts and builds skills within Mathematics, Social Studies, Economics, Language Arts, Business Education and Technology curriculum. SMS is an electronic simulation of Wall Street trading, designed to teach students how financial markets work and how they affect the economy. Students in grades 4 through 12 form teams and create and manage a hypothetical portfolio of stocks and mutual funds over a ten-week period each fall and spring. The SMS challenges students to achieve the largest portfolio gains while learning in the process. See the website for more information. How Does SMS Work? The $100,000 that each team receives in “imaginary funds” can be invested in stocks on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), the NASDAQ Stock Market (NASDAQ), and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Visit www.ohiosms.com to submit trades, review team activity, research stocks, obtain quotes, look up ticker symbols, and to review your team’s ranking. During the ten-week simulation, stocks are traded via personal computer by simply typing in the ticker symbol and the transaction (buy, sell, short-cover, or short-sell). Stock transactions are generally posted within 15 minutes. Team activity and team rankings are updated every business day on the SMS web site. Rankings for the top three teams are published each Saturday in the Business Section of The Cleveland Plain Dealer; www.plaindealer.com. Awards: Prizes are awarded to the top 3 teams in both the elementary/middle and high school divisions. Winning SMS teams and their teachers will be recognized at a luncheon in May 2007 at the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank. A trophy will be awarded to any team that is also a statewide winner in each division. SMS Ranking Team $’s Teacher $’s First Place $150.00 $75.00 Second Place $100.00 $50.00 Third Place $50.00 $25.00 Cost and Registration: Cost is $14.00 per team. Payment for teams is made payable to Ashland University. Please enroll only the number of teams needed as you will be invoiced for the number you enroll. To be eligible for team prizes, a purchase order or payment must be received by March 16, 2007. To access the registration form and register your teams, visit www.ohiosms.com. Click on the Cleveland Center’s page/link. Click on “Teachers: Register for Spring SMS.” Click on the appropriate categories, fill in the information required, and click on the send button. It is important that your e-mail address is accurate. You will receive a team confirmation with ID (Team Number) + a password. An Advisor’s Handbook and an interactive CD-ROM, Market Mechanics: An Interactive Guide to U.S. Markets, will be mailed upon request after online registration is complete. SMS general information is accessible from the Web site. Any Cleveland trading rules changes will be in red under the “Read Rules” link. Thanks and have fun! Barry returns to the Harlem Globetrotters for his eighth season and as an Advance Ambassador for the 2006-2007 World Tour. Barry has become a fan favorite for his amazing leaping and dunking ability. Barry was a four-year letterman at Bringham Young University-Hawaii, a three-time slam dunk champion, lead the school to the NAIA Final Four, and graduated with a degree in Business Management. During a memorable assembly held at the school, Barry helped inspire the students to stay in school, get good grades, and realize the importance of an education. The children clapped, cheered and focused all their attention on Barry as he showed off his basketball tricks and involved students by asking them questions and bringing them out on the floor to show them how to do the tricks. Barry also provided two free tickets to two participating students and teachers at the assembly for the Globetrotters World Tour 2007 on December 28 at Quicken Loans Arena. A very special thanks to the Harlem Globetrotters, “Platinum Sponsor” of The Plain Dealer’s Newspaper in Education Program for their generous donation of over 750 tickets to NIE for the December 28 event, which were sold at a discounted price to raise money for the program. One-hundred percent of the profit from the sale of these tickets resulted in an over $13,000 donation to the NIE program that will go towards sponsoring newspapers in classrooms to use as an educational tool. Harlem Globetrotter Barry “High Rise” Hardy Eric Wedge Visits Kinsner Elementary School On Tuesday, January 16, Cleveland Indians Manager, Eric Wedge, visited the 6th graders at Kinsner Elementary School in Strongsville. The Indians once again teamed up with NIE for a “Sum It Up in 7” contest found in the Cleveland Indians 2006 Mathematics curriculum guide. Students were asked to write a poem about their favorite Indians players and this year’s winner is MICHAEL MORAN of Kinsner who wrote his poem about Travis Hafner (“Pronk”). For his efforts, Michael won a pizza party for his entire grade and the classroom visit with Eric Wedge. Congratulations, Michael, and special thanks to the Cleveland Indians “Platinum Sponsor” of NIE. 4 to the following 2006 sponsors of The Plain Dealer Newspaper in Education program! Samuel H. and Maria Miller Foundation Lake County Captains The Automobile Dealers Educational Assistance Foundation, Inc. AVI Foodsystems Congratulations to Susan Schmidt, Educational Services’ newest Crystal Apple Award Judge! Susan Klein Schmidt loves helping children learn. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and was lucky to have a mother who taught school and a father who loved reading, especially the newspaper. Ms. Schmidt graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor Degree in Science studying Child Development and Textiles with electives in Journalism. In 1970, she and her husband moved to Cleveland where she continued her career in teaching by completing a Masters of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) at John Carroll University with certifications in Elementary Education and Special Education. Over twenty-five years of teaching have included working in four wonderful Ohio public school districts: Orange, Shaker Heights, Parma, and Cleveland. Ms. Schmidt has taught and tutored subjects Pre-K through grade twelve in special education as well as Elementary grades one through five. For the past 15 years, Case Elementary has been her “teaching home.” Presently, she is working with grades pre-K through eight in a unique program called “newspaper literacy.” The Plain Dealer is utilized in all grades to help increase students “love of reading.” Daily headlines, bylines, cutlines, photos, news stories and editorials enrich and impassion all, as well as motivate learning. When she hears a kindergartner say, “Here comes the news lady,” it also motivates and inspires her teaching. Professionally, Ms. Schmidt has been able to grow through the National Science Teachers’ Association (N.S.T.A.), a summer workshop at the Brooklyn Zoo, a Cleveland State University program in technology, an Ohio science study on watersheds and other workshops on literacy. Ms. Schmidt belongs to KA0, (Kappa Alpha Theta), a national sorority and supports their philanthropies for literacy (autism) and women. She also volunteers at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights. For fun and relaxation, Ms. Schmidt enjoys a good movie, tennis, volleyball, bowling, a game of cribbage or an evening at the Cleveland Orchestra. Visiting family and friends all over the country is also one of her passions. After 17 years of marriage, Ms. Schmidt became widowed and her children are now grown. Her daughter is an E.R. doctor in her first year of residency in Richmond, VA, and her son is a recent graduate of Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, who plans to practice law in Florida. Ms. Schmidt also has one granddaughter, who is full of new energy and charm. 5 May These Teachers Enjoy The Fruits Of Their Labor.
