Changing minds. Changing lives. 2013 Annual Report leecarlsoncenter.org 763-780-3036 CHANGING MINDS/ CHANGING LIVES Dear Friends, The research is startling: emotional health problems impair 10-14% of children from birth to age five. Sadly, many families don’t understand how or where to get help. Left untreated, mental health issues can lead to higher rates of violence, school dropout, family dysfunction, juvenile incarceration, chemical dependency and unintentional injuries. Simply put, untreated mental health issues leads to a lifetime of missed opportunities. At Lee Carlson Center, we have a 35 year history of providing easy access to affordable mental health services to people of all ages. We’re especially proud of the work we do with young people. For children of all ages and as young as four, our agency offers psychiatry, counseling, play therapy, and testing at our Fridley clinic. Because many families lack the financial resources and have other barriers to getting mental health treatment, schools continue to be an important access point for services. We’re proud of our 20+ year partnership with the Centennial and Columbia Heights school districts offering onsite mental health services for youth K-12. To build on this success , we applied for and were awarded state funding from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. These dollars helped us launch a school-linked mental health program in both school districts. After setting the groundwork in 2013, we officially launched the program in 2014. Through collaboration with our clinic, the school linked services offer: • mental health assessments and referrals • individual, group and family therapy • resources to help youth develop daily living and social skills • assistance for families to help them understand and better navigate the mental health system This program increases accessibility for children and youth who are uninsured or underinsured and improves outcomes for those with a mental health diagnosis. Our mission remains clear. We are here to provide exceptional and affordable mental health care to individuals and families in the communities we serve. Thanks to our loyal clients and our valued staff. And, thanks to the many individuals, businesses, civic groups, foundations, and county advocates who support our work. Gratefully, Kathy Samilo Executive Director PROGRAMS & SERVICES For those struggling with mental health issues We continue to be the place in Anoka County where youth and families can turn to get the help they need. Thanks to our founder Lee Carlson and the groundwork she laid, we continue to offer comprehensive mental health services to 4,000 to 4,500 individuals and families each year. At our Fridley clinic, we offer: • individual counseling for all ages • group therapy • marriage & family counseling • psychiatric services for children & adolescents • psychological testing and assessments for all ages Our team includes child and adolescent psychiatrists, and therapists, as well as psychologists who focus on testing. Lee Carlson Center remains one of the few providers in the area to use an income based sliding fee scale for individuals and families with inadequate insurance and limited financial resources who reside in Anoka County. leecarlsoncenter.org 763-780-3036 PROGRAMS & SERVICES For families touched by domestic violence: Out of our Blaine satellite office, we provide a therapeutic-based domestic abuse program. It’s designed to treat the whole family – including men, women, and the children involved in their lives. It remains the only program of its kind in Anoka County. The goal is to help all family members heal and move beyond the violence, with a priority on creating a safe environment for all who participate. Participants learn how to: • regulate their anger by learning how to manage stress • effectively communicate with their spouse, partner and children • identify abusive behavior and how it impacts others • set boundaries • develop positive methods of self-expression Professionally trained therapists facilitate the groups and also work with individual clients. Most of the clients are referred through the court system or through child protection, but some clients do self-refer to get the help they need. leecarlsoncenter.org 763-783-4914 PROGRAMS & SERVICES For students struggling with emotional and behavioral issues: We treat all ages, but we’re best know for our work with youth. 65% of our clients are between the ages of 10-22. In the Columbia Heights, Fridley, and Centennial school districts we help more than 500 “at risk” students K-12 who have been referred through prinicipals, counselors, or teachers. Services vary from school-to-school and include: • mental health assessments and referrals • individual, group, and/or family therapy • resources to help with daily living and social skills • assistance for families to help them understand and navigate the mental health system • collaboration between our psychiatric staff and school-based teams Students can be seen at our Fridley clinic during school breaks. All students and families have access to therapists during the summer as well. leecarlsoncenter.org 763-780-3036 PROGRAMS & SERVICES For those living serious psychiatric disorders: Bridgeview, our drop-in center for adults living with serious and persistent mental illness, opened its doors in 1984. Adults living with serious and persistent mental illness often struggle with the stigma of their diagnosis, causing them to isolate themselves from others. Bridgeview offers a setting that promotes social interaction, psychosocial rehabilitation, and recovery from mental illness. Members also have access to an extensive mental health library, nutrition and wellness classes, drop-in time to socialize and eat lunch and enjoy activities in the community. Staff works closely with families, care providers, and community organizations to assist with access to resources and services. Transportation is free for Anoka County members. Membership requires a diagnosis of serious and persistent mental illness. leecarlsoncenter.org 763-783-7440 DEMOGRAPHICS Who We Serve In 2013, we provided mental health care to over 4,500 clients.
