Dear Families,
STUDENT EXPOS
Despite the 11 weeks, and some very weary souls, we’ve managed to the finish the term in the manner in which we started; on a
high. Culminating in the outstanding student expos last week, we remain incredibly proud of our students’ achievements
throughout the term and these have been reflective in their exceptional report cards. The student expos were a snapshot of their
term, and the feedback, enthusiasm and sheer number of families in attendance, represented the success of this wonderful
initiative. Whilst it is difficult to qualify the process (teamwork, collaboration, personal management, organisation, technology
skills, time management) and effort to prepare for these amazing stalls, the students simply loved sharing their end product with
our families – they were so proud of their achievements! From posters, to flyers, to interactive digital presentations, the children’s
creative efforts showed no bounds. Perhaps best summed up by one parent, “Look how proud they are; they were simply
amazing!”
MY BROTHER JACK POETRY COMPETITION
I’m delighted to acknowledge that we had a remarkable 4 students receive a
literary award from the Glen Eira Council, for their entries in the My Brother Jack
Poetry Competition. What an exceptional outcome from over 600 entries.
Congratulations to Lauren G, Henry N, Immy H and Abbey W. Such was the
prominent representation from St Joseph’s, the children were photographed with
the Mayor of Glen Eira at the service. All details can be found on the Glen Eira
website.
But wait, there is more! It was terrific to see the healthy representation of our basketball, netball and football teams in a number
of finals over the course of the week, with the basketballers winning two premiership flags. One very happy lad quipped, “I had
to ‘pinch’ myself. I couldn’t believe I’d won.”
Within the busyness of last week, Year 2M still managed to prepare for their lovely assembly on Friday. I’m not too sure where
Mrs Martin found the time and energy between report writing, but this was such a fitting conclusion to the expo week. Well done
Year 2!
WORKING BEE
What can I say? We had another exceptional turnout on the day with over 50 parents ticking off all items on the ‘to do list.’ Once
again, this goes a long way to assisting with our maintenance and upkeep of the school. It helps with the ‘bottom line.’ I couldn’t
have been more satisfied with the energy and genuine investment by our families in the school. Some items ticked off include:
walls scrubbed, leaves raked, gardens tended, water tanks cleaned, gutters cleared and stormwater pits cleaned. We thank
Amber and her team for the delicious egg and bacon rolls and the Little Peeps Coffee Stall run by Orlando W. What a way to run
a working bee. Thanks Year 5s for coordinating this most successful day. It was great also to see lots of old and new faces
committing their time and effort during precious weekends.
MISS BRENNAN’S WEDDING
It was delightful to have photos filter through on Saturday of Miss Brennan’s wedding. The bride
looked stunning and so very happy to be surrounded by friends and family. What a lovely surprise
to see so many school children pop along to the wedding, adding to the excitement of the day. We
have 4 weeks to master Mrs Daperis’ name before she returns from Europe.
COMMITMENT MASS SUNDAY
It was most pleasing to see our families support these two required masses before the children receive the Sacrament of First
Eucharist in Term 3. Thanks again Father Sonek for your delightful interactions with our children and Mrs Sargent for supporting
the families on Sunday.
REPORT WRITING
We accept this comes with the territory, however, it’s important to acknowledge our staff for their outstanding report comments.
These take significant time to prepare and clearly reflect the intimate knowledge that each teacher has of their students. Both
Mrs Moore and I have been most impressed by the high standard this year, as the bar continues to rise.
In recent years, the feedback from our parents reflects the high quality of these reports and the personalisation identifies the
importance of student teacher relationships. In Term 3, parents will have the opportunity to meet with the teachers to share the
student goals for Semester 2 and unpack the reports if required. Acknowledging student achievements both socially and
academically, has been a highlight. Well done staff!
Your unwavering support and contributions towards your child’s education has been, and continues to be, so greatly welcomed.
We value your relationships and working in partnership and look forward to sharing in and celebrating more growth and success
in Term 3.

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
Dear Parents,
We are nearly there! What a term it has been and the students and staff are certainly ready for a well-deserved rest! We are so
proud of the student efforts this term and the staff have brought the Australian Science/Geography unit to life in the classrooms.
Last week’s expos were a wonderful celebration of student inquiry and it was great to see so much teamwork amongst the
children, and support for each other’s efforts. At St Joseph’s we understand that an essential factor in student engagement with
school, is the opportunity to exercise choice with learning, and the teachers facilitated this expertly this term. As Teaching and
Learning leader, I am often conscious of adding to the work load in the classrooms, by suggesting substantial activities like expos,
but the students and teachers are so enthusiastic about their learning and welcomed this opportunity to share work with the wider
community; I thank them for an amazing job last week, and throughout the semester. Well done!
Term 3 will flow beautifully from the groundwork set with the curriculum in Term 2. We continue with our ‘Australiana’ theme,
however, the focus will be on the history of our nation with the key idea across all year levels being:
“Australia has a rich past, made up of a multitude of stories of people from different places and times. Our nation has
been shaped by these stories and they all contribute to the identity of the country we live in today.”
Whilst this unit, ‘Australia – Exploring our Past’, is developed using the History Domain from the Australian Curriculum/AusVels,
we endeavour to have our students explore this learning through personal investigations, art, music, literature and many other
curriculum areas. We have excursions and incursions planned to enrich learning and we are very fortunate that this year’s Book
Week theme is, ‘Australia – Story Country’. Signora Clewer is on leave for the first 5 weeks of Term 3 and Mrs Linke will take her
classes during this time and will work with the students on a selection of book week novels and stories.
A highlight of the term will be our ‘Big Bush Dance and Art Show’ on Friday 9th September, 5pm-9pm. We have hired the
services of the fabulous ‘Blackberry Jam Bush Band’ to lead us in an evening of dancing and whip cracking and the band will also
visit school on Thursday 1st September to teach our students a range of bush dances. During the night of the 9th, we will have
the Australiana art work on display throughout the school, the bush dance festivities, and a performance of ‘Aussie Classics’ from
each year level. Miss Angie and Mrs Quin will be busy preparing our students throughout Term 3 during music lessons.
Phew! What an amazing term it is already shaping up to be and we will send further information to you early in the term regarding
the Big Bush Dance and Art Show; also look out for the class newsletters which will be shared with you before the end of July. In
the meantime I hope you all have a relaxing and restful mid-year break, and, as always, we thank you for your support this
semester.

Year 3/4 Australian Animal Expo
What a wonderful sight it was last Thursday afternoon to see the Grade 3/4 area come
to life with all the doors open, showcasing the students’ learning from this term. They were
incredibly excited and proud to share their projects that each of them have spent a
considerable amount of time planning, preparing and finally presenting their findings.
Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and other grades for taking the time to come
and acknowledge the hard work of the students. I’m sure you’ll all agree that it was a
very impressive and worthwhile afternoon.
Mrs Daperis’ Wedding (formerly Miss Brennan)
On Saturday afternoon Miss Brennan married her “Prince Charming”. She looked
amazing and I think the children who attended were simply in awe, as you can probably
tell in the photos. We wish her an incredible European honeymoon and look forward to
her return in Week 2 next term.
Mr Barnhoorn – Middle School Leader
Footy Day has come! On the 23rd of June you are allowed to wear your favourite AFL team colours. If
you don’t go for Aussie rules, that’s fine, just wear some colours of your choice. On this day the sport
captains will be doing lots of fun activities to do with AFL. We hope to see you wearing your favourite team
colours.
STAFF NEWS
Miss Louisa Di Pietro is one very proud daughter. Louisa’s father, Commodore Vince Di Pietro, received an AM
(Member of the Order) award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. This Order of Australia award was conferred on Commodore
Di Pietro for exceptional service as Commander of the Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm and as Australia’s Naval Attaché to
the United States.
Commodore Di Pietro, who has just retired from the navy after 39 years, said to represent Australia in Washington DC as the
Naval Attaché was a “huge honour”. “But to also come back to HMAS Albatross as the Commander of the Fleet Air Arm, where
I started my career as a 17-year-old was amazing,” he said.
Commodore Di Pietro also paid credit to the support of his wife Sandy and his children Flavia, Louisa and Olivia and son-in-law
Sam. “To be able to do what we do in uniform around the world, you cannot take for granted the support we receive from our
families,” he said. “The stability of family support and love surrounding you is the greatest single foundation stone and we cannot
give enough homage and respect for what they do for us at home. “The navy and the nation asks a lot of us and we couldn’t do
it without them.”

LITERACY NEWS
READING AT HOME
I read this recently and it seemed so apt that I wanted to share it with you before the holidays. “As parents we sometimes struggle
with the most effective help to give our children when doing their home reading. It is often hard to get the balance right between
helping your child read accurately and keeping it a fun activity.
Firstly, it is meant to be an enjoyable time where we encourage a love of reading and literature – so that must be our first priority.
Some evenings it might be advisable to do a "read to" where you read the text to your child, modelling fluency and expression
and enjoyment of the story! You can occasionally stop and talk about things that are happening, predict what might happen next
or say what events or people in the story remind you of...always making the text meaningful to the child.
A strategy to focus on when your child encounters a difficult word is to ask them to think of what word might make sense in the
sentence. This important strategy focuses on the child making meaning. It can sometimes be neglected in favour of the visual
strategy of sounding out the word. Both are important strategies but too much emphasis on laboured decoding can interrupt the
flow of the story and may make reading too much of a chore. You can always come back to the word later and say, "You
said........... Does that make sense? and... Does that look right? Once your child can integrate both strategies, you know that they
are on their way to being a successful problem solver in their reading.”

YEAR 2 NEWS
Last week our Year 2s had a very busy week. During Maths we were learning about different types of patterns. We discovered
that patterns can be made from almost anything. They always follow a rule and that there are two different types of patterns. We
decided to create a pattern book and teach the Preps about repetitive and growing patterns. It was lots of fun. We also got
prepared for the School Expo. We learnt that Australia is made up many habitats so we researched a habitat of interest and
found out what animals and plants live in this habitat. We really enjoyed working with our friends and creating google slides and
posters.
SPORT NEWS
CONGRATULATIONS
To the Joey Giants Blue basketball team. These Grade 5 boys were extremely excited when they won the Premiership for this
season, in their level of the basketball competition. The team would also like to acknowledge the efforts of their very dedicated
coach, Will Davidson. Their parents and St Joseph’s school community are very proud of them also!
Our two Year 4 boy’s teams were in the Grand Final versing each other last Friday night. One team won but it looks like everyone
was a winner!
