Hazus-MH in Brazil
●
Why? When? How?
●
Requirements
○
Identified, existing, available datasets
○
Portuguese language version (Brazilians are not fluent in English and some concepts cannot be directly translated
■
●
E.g.: danger, harzard, risk assessment, risk evaluation - they are all translated into evaluation of risk
Challenges
Benefits
versus
○
Hazus specific database
○
Organization and development of additional required datasets
○
Data input (CDMS or Data Interoperability)
○
Improvement of GIS skillset
○
Standards and base calculation
○
Review of analytical processes and parameters used by Brazil
○
Innovation
○
Opportunity for exchange of knowledge and being able to provide
for an organized and standardized approach for research and future
humanitarian needs
Past Activities
• Official Agreement
• Research Group registered
– Interested parties: 4 States (academia and Civil Defense), 2 National Agencies, other
representatives
– Cyclic opening research and visiting professionals opportunities
Landslide Module
Challenge:
●
Many different of typology of landslides (Rock fall, debris flow/ mud flow, translational, rotational, etc..)
○
Differents process in a same class group
How solve this problem:
●
Building differents modules for each type of landslides.
●
In Brazil the most commonly found types are:
○
Debris flow/ mudflow
○
Translational
Flooding Module
Challenge
●
●
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) - TOPODATA Program by INPE (Spatial Research National Institute);
○
created from SRTM database (3 arc-sec - 90 m),
○
after processing - (filling in, pos-processing,interpolation) - DEM.tiff (1arc-sec - 30 m),
○
TOPODATA is our National Elevation Dataset (NED).
Inventory and Valuation;
○
Define the components of Inventory (are they the same of ones in the USA?),
○
Deph-Damage Functions - We don’t have a Federal Insurance Administration (FIA) and a USAGE either,
○
Damage Functions should be developed at universities and national resources centers.
