Dear Mr. Ventura Rojas,
How very interesting to receive your generous and intriguing letter, with its suggestions about
the parallels between Clarke and Goya. I am also glad you appreciated the references to
Velasquez in Clarke's work.
I think your suggestion that Clarke's 'Mad Mulrannies' illustration to Synge's 'Playboy' may well
be derived to Goya's 'La Romeria de San Isidro', and am very grateful to you for pointing this
out. Although Clarke only visited Spain very briefly, in 1926, he obviously knew Spanish
paintings in reproduction or through his visits to the National Galleries in Dublin and in London.
A number of his closest friends were well versed in the fine arts and could have shown him
whatever was in print at the time.
It is possible that my book may be going to be published in a new edition soon and if so I shall
ensure the inclusion of this important source. It would be interesting to see what editions of
images were in print c. 1916/1917 that Clarke might have consulted.
Thank you for this excellent piece of art historical detective work, and for your kind remarks
about my work on Clarke. I am currently preparing a companion volume on Wilhelmina
Geddes, the other major figure in stained glass in Ireland, but who worked in England between
1925-1955, strongly influenced by Assyrian sculpture, and late Renaissance Italian painting,
among other interesting sources.
With all best wishes, for your own work,
Sincerely,
Nicola Gordon Bowe (Dr.)
