Google Glass reborn as Project Aura
Google Glass may have captured the imagination,
but it never quite captured the market. Now, Google
appears to be creating a new organization to develop
the idea of an electronic eyewear despite closing down
sales and production of the original Google Glass.
Newly christened “Project Aura – Glass and Beyond”
will be overseen within Google, though according to a
report from Business Insider, Nest CEO Tony Fadell will
have a “high-level oversight” of the development team.

In addition, the company hired a number of engineers,
developers and project managers from Amazon’s
secretive product development arm Lab126, following
layoffs there.
The BI report noted that the former head of Google
Glass engineering, Adrian Wong, had been lured back
from Facebook’s Oculus VR headset development team
in June.
Aside from the task of reviving Google Glass, Project
Aura aims to speed up Google's efforts to develop
similar wearable technology. The "Beyond" part may
be geared toward developing a VR or an AR headset.
Will this mean that Google will be working on a VR
headset like Oculus? Perhaps, but given its focus and
history, a device like the Microsoft Hololens AR headset
may be more likely.
A smart watch that wraps its screen around your wrist
A company called Polyera announced a new smart
watch with a flexible display. It’s less a watch than a
flexible wristband that uses a flexible monochrome E
Ink, allowing the user to wrap the device around the
wrist. The Wove Band uses what the company called a
“digital fabric technology” to allow for flexible screens
in a variety of form factors, of which the wristband is
one.
According to the company, this technology “is a unique
set of materials and tools designed to enable products
with flexible electronics at scale.” Billed as the world’s
first flexible display product, the Wove Band is said to
combine mechanical flexibility and ergonomics. It will
be ready for sale in 2016.
One of the interesting aspects of the technology is that
it is built to be a fashion accessory as well as a wearable
electronic device. The screen can be used to display
complementary patterns to the wearer’s current
wardrobe, for example.

The company has indicated that monochrome is just
the first step. The system could also be built with fullcolor flexible OLED panels instead. In addition, Polyera
is beginning to prototype other types of electronic
wearables, including outerwear with active layers on
the sleeves.
Apple now second-largest wearables vendor
Apple does not break out its sales numbers of the
Apple Watch, but according to data from IDC, the
company is now the second-largest wearables vendor
in the world.
The company sold about 3.6 million Watches in the
second quarter, more than any other smart watch
maker by a significant margin. For reference, Samsung
shipped 600,000 units during the quarter, good
enough to be the fifth-largest wearables vendor.
However, this appears to be the year of Apple with
more Watches shipped in Q2 2015 than all smart
watches in 2014.

Apple wasn’t the only new wearables vendor in 2015.
Xiaomi also debuted its Mi Band in the past year, and

revenue, it is likely quite a bit lower, since the Mi Band
FitBit retains spot as the top global vendor of

impressively – shipments of the company’s products
grew by more than 150 percent YoY.
UK startup designs smart watch for all occasions
Google’s Project Ara has a vision for the smartphone
as a modular design. The concept of a modular
smartphone sounds appealing although it has yet to
come to market, with its test launch set in Puerto Rico
later this year.
Now, a startup in the UK wants to take the concept to
smart watches. Blocks, an Android Wear-based system,
uses modular components to allow the user to swap
out a variety of sensors such as GPS, heart rate sensors,
blood oxygen sensors and motion controllers. The
design allows for additional batteries, SIM cards and
even a kinetic charger that will charge the watch as the
users swings their arms.
The company takes the concept of a modular platform
even beyond Project Ara, going so far as being able
to switch out the screen from a rectangular or circular
LCD to an E Ink display, for example. Each module is
expected to cost from £20 to £40, and can be plugged
in via connectors on the links of the watch.

The watch is still in the prototype stage at this point,
with the design team needing to do significant work
on miniaturization.
Nevertheless, the concept of timepieces as a modular
system has the potential to make smart watches far
more adaptable and attractive.
