Kubotaʻs historical drama about the life of Kaluaiko‘olau, a paniolo and ‘outlaw’. In this one-man play — as seen through the eyes of Koʻolau — a courageous story unfolds about a Hawaiian family on Kauai fighting for their rights amidst the chaos and loss of Hawaiian sovereignty in 1893. Koʻolau fought a rebel militia that had overthrown the Hawaiian monarchy and wanted to enforce leprosy laws that would force him and his son to the leper settlement at Kalaupapa known as “the Living Grave.” But Koʻolau’s expertise as a marksman, the resolve of his wife Pi‘ilani to keep the family together, and the vast wilderness of Kalalau Valley on Kauai all contribute to his cause. It is a tale of love and survival against all odds. Featuring Moronai Kānekoa; directed by Monte Scott Perez; • Tickets: advance $20; at door $25; • Call: (916) 601-7865. KŪ KA PAILA • Punahou Alumni Association Northern California: At Chris Hemmeter’s ’82 E&O Kitchen and Bar in San Francisco, California, on Dec. 3, guests enjoyed E&O’s signature corn fritters and specialty holiday cocktails while getting caught up at the Punahou Alumni Association Northern California (PAANC) annual Holiday Pau Hana. A video booth captured some alumni’s reflections on Punahou and new memories were formed as guests connected with alumni from the classes of 1957 – 2010. “It’s awesome seeing so many Puns out here in the Bay Area. Makes you really appreciate the Punahou community,” said David Yamane ‘07. Blessed with one of the largest alumni bases outside Hawai‘i, PAANC’s engagement has grown steadily since the chapter’s launch in September 2014. Past programming has included casual get-togethers in San Francisco, organized through PAANC’s Facebook page, receptions with visiting Punahou faculty and staff and a speaker series. The coming months will provide even more opportunities to connect with local alumni. PAANC will pilot a mentoring program for undergraduates and young alumni. The chapter will also partner with Menlo School and Head of School Than Healy ’87 to host Frank Bruni, a New York Times reporter and best-selling author, on March 21 at Menlo School. Mr. Bruni will share insights from his book, “Where You Go Is Not Who You Will Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania.” And, on May 1, families and friends from all over Northern California are invited to celebrate Punahou’s 175th anniversary with a family-friendly lu‘au at the Mill Valley Community Center. • On Dec. 4, the Punahou Alumni Association Northwest (PAANW) held its annual Holiday Malasada Social at Roddy Cooke’s ’85 Lucky Labrador Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon. Nearly 70 alumni ranging from the Class of 1952 – 2015 enjoyed a little taste of home with some malasadas. Guests also enjoyed pizza, Hawaiian music and a holiday photo booth. As a follow-up to its November community service project, PAANW collected canned goods for THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER ! ! TALK STORY: • Kuiokalani Lee Songbook: Well, itʻs about time somebody honored the compositions of the late Kuiokalani Lee. I never knew him nor did I see him perform but his sister in law, the late, Libby Naone Bailey of Maple Shade, New Jersey had a haunting influence on my own music. My favorite Kui Lee song is “Iʻll Remember You.” Kui passed away in 1966 at age 34, and now 50 years later Ron Ka-ipo of Keaau put together 26 of Kuiʻs songs (some of which I have not heard before) on a 2 disk CD, “Intangible Dream - The Kui Lee Songbook,” Ka-ipo THE KAPALAKIKO NEWSLETTER ! ! This past Octoberʻs series highlighted the hālauʻs 30th anniversary and it was spectacular as ever, featuring a wonderful segment by Robert Cazimero and the music of Kūpaoa. Midway through his program kumu Patrick shocked the unknowing audience by announcing, “O, you know what the city wants to do with this beautiful place? Well, two proposals before the Board of Parks and Recreation plans to turn it into a hotel.” This was greeted with hisses and boos. “I think this place should be turned into a center for culture and arts.” Big applause. The Palace of Fine Arts is a historical remnant of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, which by the way heralded a world wide craze for the proliferation of Hawaiian music and hula. It was designed by the celebrated architect, Bernard Maybeck. There is a movement developing to stop this asinine move by the Parks and Recreation Board of San Francisco. One hundred years and thousands of ukuleles later, Kamaka’s descendants continue to manufacture the world’s premier ‘ukulele. 2016 marks our 100th anniversary, a very special time for Kamaka family and friends, especially president Sam Kamaka, Jr., and Vice President Fred Kamaka, Sr. Both in their nineties, Sam and Fred have known the Hawaiian art of ‘ukulele making their entire lives. All of us at Kamaka Hawai‘i feel humbled and blessed to be celebrating this significant milestone with them. The NAMM Show in Anaheim marked the kick-off of our anniversary year. Our 2016 ‘ukulele models were unveiled and a concert was held to thank our vendors and supporters. Headlining the event was world-renowned ‘ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro along with a sensational line-up of Hawaiian performers including Andrew Molina, Kris Fuchigami, Aidan James, Brittni Paiva, Kalei Gamiao, Benny Chong, Herb Ohta, Jr., Halehaku Seabury, and the Side Order Band (Asa Young, Del Beazley, Bryan Tolentino, and Chris Kamaka). A year of celebration is planned to recognize this milestone. Two styles of Reyn Spooner Kamaka Hawai‘i aloha shirts will be unveiled, a compilation CD of music played on Kamaka ukuleles by noted local artists will be released, and noted author Jocelyn Fujii will debut her book chronicling the history of Kamaka Hawai‘i and the family behind the company. The weekly basic San Francisco Section welcomed 6 new students; the weekly basic South Bay Section welcomed 10 new students; the monthly basic East Bay Section welcomed 8 new students; and the monthly basic Sacramento Section welcomed 11 new students. Some are indeed luminaries; others are small potatoes; common folk, just like us; and many toil, unheralded in the shadows of anonymity. It matters not, to us.
