Cinequest opens in grand fashion as the lights dim, and we present an uproarious comedy from
director Don McKellar (Last Night) and screenwriter Michael Dowse (Goon), starring a brilliant cast
that includes Brendan Gleeson (“Mad-Eye” Moody from the Harry Potter films), Taylor Kitsch (Friday
Night Lights), and Liane Balaban (Supernatural).
A decade after Jean-Francois Pouliot’s La Grande Séduction wowed critics, the brilliantly adapted
English remake substitutes the quaint charm of rural Quebec with the rugged beauty of a tiny
Newfoundland coastal community.
With the decline of jobs in the fishing industry and their friends and family taking jobs in the big city,
the residents of a small village are overjoyed by the prospects that a plastics manufacturer wants to
build a factory in their town. A bright future lies ahead for everyone—that is, until the “hammer drops”
and they learn the company requires a resident doctor serve the community…something they don’t
have. Enter Dr. Lewis (Kitsch), a cosmetic surgeon who has been “banished” to the seaside haven.
Hilarity ensues as the community scrambles to charm Lewis to become their permanent doctor by
attempting to be a sophisticated, worldly community, rather than the unrefined group they are.
Director Don McKellar has previously had work shown at Cinequest with the 2000 short film
Elimination Dance and again in 2012, when he starred in I’m Yours. With his new film, McKellar
further reveals his superb talent for creating entertaining stories that bring to life vibrant and colorful
characters. Cinequest is so proud to present this year’s Opening Night presentation:
The Grand Seduction.

CELEBRATION
SMALL
TIME
SPECIAL
APPEARANCE BY
CHRISTOPHER
MELONI
Cinequest 2014 culminates with dynamic energy, excitement, and celebration. Join writer/director
Joel Surnow (24, The Kennedys) and star Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU, True Blood)
for a spectacular premiere screening of Small Time, also starring Dean Norris (Breaking Bad,
Under the Dome), Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Bridget Moynahan (Blue Bloods), Kevin
Nealon ( Weeds, SNL), Garcelle Beauvais (Flight), Xander Berkeley ( Taken), and Amaury Nolasco
( Transformers).
Some fathers encourage (and some coerce) their sons to join the family business. Al Klein (Meloni),
owner of a used car lot gets his dream when his son Freddy (Bostick) graduates from high school
and foregoes college in favor of selling cars with his old man. Klein is thrilled when Freddy moves in
with him - it’s the first time these two have lived under one roof since Freddy was a kid. Klein’s ex-wife
Barbara (Moynahan), on the other hand, is very far from thrilled. Klein watches Freddy transform
from an innocent young man into a seasoned car salesman. Klein sees Freddy becoming like him,
applying every trick in the book to unload cars. In Freddy, Klein sees himself clearly in the mirror,
leaving him with a tough decision to make.
Meloni and Bostwick are so thoroughly convincing that it’s hard to believe they aren’t real life father
and son. Add to this mix exceptional turns by the entire ensemble cast, and Surnow’s witty, intelligent
script, and the experience is a layered story that is poignant, refreshing, and always entertaining.
Cinequest is thrilled to bring it to you first, followed by a fabulous party to celebrate. - Courtesy of

MARTIN COOPER
“The artist and the engineer have
many things in common. One
is passion. How can you work
on something for 20, 30 ... even
40 years, holding onto an idea
you know is right...until the world
eventually adopts that idea?”
Martin “Marty” Cooper exemplifies the neverending passion needed to fuel great creations of
science and art. In a world where instantaneous
success often replaces lasting impact, Marty’s
life and work showcase a brilliant mind, ebullient
spirit, and massive heart. Marty believed, before it seemed possible, that people wanted to connect
with people and do it while being mobile. He saw the world we all enjoy today, and because of his
vision, innovations, leadership, and persistence the cell phone has become a powerful global tool of
communication and creativity. Yet it took Marty 30 years to make his vision a reality. Most would have
given up after 30 days or 30 months of seeming failure.
Cinequest presents its highest honor, the Maverick Innovator Award, to Martin Cooper on Opening
Night, March 4, at 7 pm, California Theatre.

Cinequest proudly honors actor and filmmaker Matthew Modine ( The Dark Knight Rises, Jobs) with
the Maverick Innovator Award and presents this intimate look at his new “appumentary” Full Metal
Jacket Diary. Based on his award-winning limited-edition book, Modine’s diary chronicles the making
of Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam War masterpiece Full Metal Jacket—becoming an entirely reimagined,
interactive audiovisual experience, and a stunning journey into new storytelling territory. Through
this lively presentation and conversation with Matthew Modine, fans will revel in a celebration of one
of cinema’s greatest directors. Like Kubrick, Modine has embraced new technologies to craft an
awe-inspiring new way of looking at the movie experience in a fresh and adventurous way.
MATTHEW MODINE
“When I first set out to make my book, the goal was to create something that Stanley would have
been proud of and wanted to own. The goal with this app has been no different,” said Modine. “If
Stanley were alive today, I think he would love the iPad. He was always interested in the latest technologies and in many ways, he was ahead of his time….This app will give a new audience and a new
generation access to my diary and photographs in ways I never imagined possible.”

NEIL GAIMAN
Often Neil Gaiman’s work gets categorized as
Dark Fantasy. But Neil’s work strains against
such limitations, starting from his first major
work in the U.S., The Sandman. Comics, short
stories, poetry, novels, and screenplays have
all sprung forth from his fertile imagination, yet
his earliest writing was as a journalist, profiling
the likes of Duran Duran and Douglas Adams. In
recent years he has become a producer and a
director, all while continually evolving as perhaps
his most charming aspect: a true raconteur.
If his own story must have a beginning, it was
in Hampshire, U.K., though he currently lives
in the U.S. He describes his young self as “…a
feral child who was raised in libraries.” It seems
destiny guided him to his role as “Prince of
Stories” – the title of a critical retrospective of
his work.
While he has taken adults to Neverwhere,
he reminds young and old to seek magic in
Stardust. For the very young, he taught The
Dangerous Alphabet and remembered The Day
I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish.
Neil’s work gracefully straddles the media. You
can find it adapted to film, but also inspiring
radio plays, stage musicals, and operas.
Fulfilling a dream of that feral child in the
library, he wrote an episode of Doctor Who in
2011, “The Doctor’s Wife,” as well as a 2013
bestselling novel, The Ocean at the End of the
Lane. And having turned producer for Stardust,
he has also directed two short films himself, one
starring his wife, musician Amanda Palmer.
And it is with Amanda, perhaps, that we can at
last find a definition for Neil’s work. In the purest
most Shakespearean sense – encompassing
terror, adventure, magic, wonder, heroism,
heaven, hell, and love – Neil’s work, his gift to us
and to himself, is Romance.

impossible not because it can’t be done, but because it MUST be done. A tale filled

of rising once again to the task, regardless; a tale of two sisters who have moved

LIFE IS LOVE
HEROES LEAD WITH THEIR HEART.
WED 3/5 6:30pm (CAL) | SUN 3/9 2:00pm (C12)
A group of amazing young women triumph over severe adversity to transform their
world. Arguably the world’s most impactful leader in the movement to free and transform
girls from the ravages of human trafficking, Somaly Mam, a survivor and empowered
inspiration, signs her books: “Life Is Love.” Cinequest knew we must give voice to the
young girls with whom Somaly works to further heal and to help other young women
around the globe. What we didn’t know is that their stories would fuel a most inspiring
movie about how any of us can meet a challenge and emerge living a life of love.

KNIGHT RETURNS
“YOU TOLD ME THAT I BREAK TOO MANY OF THE IMPORTANT RULES…”
SAT 3/8 1:00pm (REP) | SUN 3/9 11:00am (REP) | TUES 3/11 12:45pm (C12)
Like a kick in the teeth to the old style of comics, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns
exploded into readers’ consciousnesses in 1986. Suddenly four-color comics weren’t
so black and white, gathered up in Batman’s grey-gloved fist. After the first issue,
Miller went from popular to legendary. Masterpiece explores how Miller shook the dust
off Batman and sent ripples through the industry that are still felt today. Narrated by
Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), the documentary traces Miller’s process from
the glimmer of an idea to one of the most famous graphic novels of all time. Miller’s dark
vision left the rest of the comics industry struggling to catch up. Dive deep into Miller’s
masterpiece, still one of the most influetial graphic novels of our time.

will listen, Spoon reveals to be a talented performer whose songs are haunting and
lyrical, with pathos and humor. Director Chelsea McMullan intersperses interviews

Segway inventor, Dean Kamen, and his 15-year quest to solve the world’s safe water

help people in need and ease suffering. Fifty percent of all human illness is the result of
water borne pathogens. Kamen has invented an energy efficient vapor-compression
distiller that can turn any unfit source of water into potable, safe water. Kamen’s

Old hostilities, new technologies, two ambitious entrepreneurs, and a ton of hope
live under the same sun in the Middle East. An Israeli businessman and a Palestinian
risk their lives to work together on a solar project to power Palestinian territories. The
resolution is so simple, it almost seems wishful - a savvy Facebook campaign that
brings them huge support and peace! The film subtly underlines the similarities between
people and dispels false notions about the “other.” Set in the near future, Under the
Same Sun is a simple, yet powerful, drama of how ordinary people can create big
changes. A collaboration between Palestinian director Sameh Zoabi and Academy

It was a simple plan gone awry. Milton, a brilliant college dropout, was only supposed
to cook meth for one day. Broken out of rehab by a brash young woman and her
trigger-happy (“ex”) boyfriend and driven to a remote cabin in the woods, Milton finds
himself drawn into a dangerous love triangle gone haywire in this genre-bending,
neo-noir, mind fuck of a movie. The couple’s deadpan half-truths spin around Milton
like a song on repeat. They seem to read him like an open book, until a mysterious
message opens his eyes to his cursed existence. With unlimited ammunition, any
hunting tool they could desire, and an ever-growing body count, for what did Milton

A man scratches a circle in the earth, hits an old peddler over the head, and puts him
inside it. “Open the circle!” he shouts at the younger man. “Let me out! Don’t leave

broken, the man believes he cannot leave. This beautiful tale of the Kurdish Yazidi, a
small, non-Islamic religious community with close ties to nature, is like sitting before

much paradox as parable. Its telling as unusual as its view of the world, this is a true

Ritchie (Andrew Lawrence, United States of Tara) is the epitome of everything wrong
with modern man: a pompous, foul-mouthed idiot, driven only to get the latest girlof-the-week. Something changes after his first real relationship that includes Ritchie’s
two favorite things: frequent condomless sex and freshly baked cookies. Through his
“confessions,” we learn his womanizing goes much deeper, fueled by a scar caused
years ago, among other wounds. But leave it to his new best friend, a transgendered
prostitute named Ginger, to help Ritchie work through these psychological issues.

Big hair. Guyliner. Someone lamenting by crashing waves on a beach or to their
reflection in a fountain. Yes, we’re talking about the 80s! Eternity: The Movie gives
us all this and more with hilariously dry humor in each shamelessly funny scene.
Todd and BJ, two lonely wannabe artists, find one another and create the not-sodynamic R&B duo, “Eternity.” Capturing the near painful awkwardness that was 80s
R&B, each line spews melodrama and sex; all very intentional. Whether you’ve lived
through the hilarious hair and regrettable fashion choices or saw them in “What Were
They Thinking?” articles, get ready to laugh to the max for all of eternity.

An obnoxious meter maid and social media junkie, Michael (Ryan Hansen, Veronica
Mars) delights in writing up parking violations and then posting about it on Facebook.
But when he’s fired from his job and dumped by his best friend, Michael forms a plot
to see who his real friends are: fake his death and spy on who attends his funeral.
He hijacks his socially-awkward colleague’s Facebook profile and piles lie upon lie,
all the while being stalked by a mysterious blonde and his best friend’s suspicious
roommate. The two threaten to blow up the scheme and humiliate Michael, but his
actions have much deeper consequences than his pride. An edgy coming-of-age
comedy, Friended to Death explores the meaning of friendship in a social-mediadominated world.

Bob Burkholder and Britt Crosley to create a very positive and life-affirming story.

modern-day Vietnam. Businessman Lucky Loc (ironically named of course) has finally
gained a respectable position in society. However, his winning streak comes to a

Believing it to be his lucky charm, he’s convinced giving away the bill caused his

his world crumbling beneath his feet. Between witnessing his father’s work-related
death at the bank and his clueless mother struggling to keep their house, he finds
the only people willing (dare say wild enough) to help fix everything. His cranky
grandfather (Sasson Gabai, The Band’s Visit), a former member of Lehi, a militant

SAT 3/8 4:00pm (C12) | MON 3/10 6:15pm (C12) | THUR 3/13 4:30pm (C12)
A delightful and colorful romantic-comedy, Nothing in Los Angeles chronicles a
young artist’s bittersweet love affair with the city of LA, focusing on the fleeting
nature of personal relationships and professional dreams. At the center of it lies
Quinn, a 25-year-old aspiring writer dating Ann, a mother of three who is twice his
age. Best friend, Peter married Beth but “entertains” an older man on the side.
Quinn feels misunderstood and struggles to find takers for his lofty, artistic visions.
The others struggle with their own, sometimes twisted personal dilemmas. Fears of
insignificance, transient relationships, broken friendships, and the nature of the film
world are cleverly explored in a witty, Woody Allen-esque tale with LA serving as
the backdrop.

After many failed attempts at suicide, twenty-something Tom comes to the
conclusion that he needs to think outside the box. Clearly, his lack of success is
due to his lack of creativity. If he’s going to “go out,” he’s going to make his exit
memorable. Between assisting a grumpy old kook, his therapy sessions with a
dry, apathetic therapist, and his apparent stalker, things couldn’t get worse. Tom
struggles to come to grips with his reasons for his self-destructive nature, develops
relationships with those around him, and tries to come up with the Spectacular
Suicide. Can Tom shake loose this mortal coil, or will he give up and choose life? A
truly twisted dark comedy with a surreal tinge and a surprisingly uplifting story.

Luckily, an older female named Jeanie shows up at his doorstep. As attraction builds
and tensions rise, the two make courageous strides, creating positive changes in
their unfortunate lives. Surprisingly, Johnny’s one-time sexual experience with Jeanie
sends him on a surge of euphoric freedom and growth. From absurd scenes of him
as a bus boy at a Mexican restaurant, to awkward scenes of jealousy, you will fall in

The giggles. The euphemisms. The traditionally non-sexual objects transformed into
those of bewilderment as you learned about S – E – X. We all remember some form of
education, but for over a century, we utilized films as the primary method of teaching
sex-ed in schools. Many people look back at how they learned about sex, whether
it was a book, an embarrassing parental chat, a school presentation, or porn, and
remember their shock and embarrassment. Looking back though, we can’t help but
laugh at how we learned. Through the lens of the often hilarious, only sometimes
informative, sex-ed films from 1910 to the present day, Sex(ed): The Movie illustrates
how emblematic this education is of both our evolving culture and the changing moral,
cultural, and political attitudes and agendas that inspired them.

With an abundance of dry humor, beautiful cinematography, and a pure love of the
people of the island Kingdom of Tonga, the tale of Flying Fox becomes an amusing
allegory of a man learning about the world. Flying Fox has never been outside of his
island. At the direction of his chief, Flying Fox ventures out from the comforts he has
known. When he meets warring villages (who don’t know why they hate each other…
just that it’s tradition to hate each other), he begins to absorb knowledge and learn new
lessons, which he brings home with startling results. Alex Bernstein’s cleverly crafted
saga is told as a “journey inward and a journey outward.” Soane Prescott’s brilliant
depiction of Flying Fox is a dynamic blend of drama and comic genius. The first movie
shot in Tonga, When the Man Went South is creative storytelling at its finest.

A guaranteed conversation-starter, director Joshua Overbay’s debut feature is a
riveting and lyrical journey that examines human frailty and our search for meaning.
After the death of their Prophet, a small religious sect turn to one of their members,
Daniel, who’s been asked to lead them, as they anxiously await the end of the
world they were promised. But, when the prophecy does not come to pass, Daniel
struggles to cling to his faith while keeping his community together. Husband and
wife team Joshua and Ginny Lee Overbay have crafted a superb, layered character
study that examines our need for meaning to our lives, and how, when our beliefs are
wrong, we don’t adapt or move on. We cling.

As summer turns to fall, music teacher and family man Keith privately reminisces
about his days as a starving artist in Manhattan. When foreign exchange student
Sophie arrives, she not only brings the freshness of an outsider’s perspective to his
life, but also the youthful daringness to be free. Challenging the dynamics of her host
family’s relationships and altering their lives forever, she soon rekindles an impetuous
aspect of Keith’s personality. Engrossing, beautiful, and heartbreaking, Breathe In
builds a grand story of love, heartache, and the question: are boundaries there for a
good reason? Supported by Academy Award-nominee Amy Ryan, Breathe In will fuel
your longing to be free and examine if freedom is really a good thing.

When a cold and arrogant authoritarian teacher who seems to hold all his students
in equal contempt takes over a German class midway through the year, the students
quickly christened him a “Nazi.” When a tragedy occurs, he becomes the target
of the students’ anger and confusion. Once started, though, momentum eclipses
motive, and things take on a life of their own. And the students: do they still have a
just cause, or are they just rebels? Slovenia’s Oscar submission is edge-of-the-seat
excitement filled with provocative ideas. Hugely intelligent, its complex situation
poses difficult questions even as it thrills. Featuring amazing acting - the students
are, almost unbelievably, all non-professionals - Class Enemy is emotionally gripping,
incisive, involving, and yes, absolutely unforgettable.

THE DESERT FISH
DOWN RIVER
A FABLE OF CHILDHOOD, MAN, AND NATURE
WINNER OF MOST POPULAR CANADIAN FILM AWARD AT THE VANCOUVER
INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL!
WED 3/5 4:45pm (C12) | WED 3/12 8:30pm (C12) | THUR 3/13 6:00pm (C12)
A cinematographic feast for the eyes, The Desert Fish spans over 1200 miles of
stunning, never-before-filmed Iranian countryside. A poetic, visual treat about a
young boy in search of his mother who was lost at sea more than eight years ago,
the story inspires hope. As in classic childhood stories, we witness the fusion of
magic, tragedy, young love, and the trials of adolescence woven into a powerful tale
of redemption. With subtle notes of man’s responsibility to nature, in a world where
nature is turning against us, The Desert Fish ultimately reveals how much a child will
sacrifice for a chance at happiness, and how much we will have to sacrifice for
our future.

forced to make much needed changes to live independently and find their courage
without the safety net of Pearl. Can they reach the other side of success or will
they fall from grace? Featuring a superb ensemble cast of Gabrielle Miller (Sisters &

Years of working in the food industry have made Juana, a working-class Latina, a
chef of speed and skill. Searching for financial stability, she stumbles into a highenergy, male-dominated Japanese cuisine kitchen. The new atmosphere re-ignites
her passions for food and life and makes her hungry to get mixed up in the flavors
of this new world. She strives to prove herself as a female powerhouse and sushi
line chef. As Juana, Diana Elizabeth Torres brings to life a story of overcoming and
connecting worlds divided, fusing both food and cultures. East Side Sushi ignites a
fire in audiences’ hearts and brings forth the rich perspectives of the overlooked and
underestimated. It’ll please your palate, but still have you craving seconds.

With lush, sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and close, intimate shots of
expertly plated dishes, director Michael Whalen brings to light the journey of a farm
alongside an award-winning restaurant. People around the world know Manresa by
its stellar reputation, but few know of Love Apple Farms, the biodynamic farm that
almost exclusively provides Chef David Kinch with produce and inspiration. Cynthia
Sandberg, the eponymous farmer, details her transition from lawyer to proprietor of
an 80-acre project nestled in the Santa Cruz hills, while Kinch tells the story of how
they began their now inseparable partnership. See page 13 for the Maverick Chef

GO DOWN DEATH
EVERYBODY’S LOOKING FOR SOMETHING, BUT NOBODY KNOWS QUITE WHAT IT IS.
RIDING A HORSE CALLED MISERY ON THE DIRT ROAD TO DEATH
WED 3/5 9:00pm (C12) | FRI 3/7 5:00pm (REP) | SAT 3/15 9:00pm (C12)
Welcome to Germany, “where the sun always shines and everybody is beautiful,
polite, successful, or happy.” Stop. Reality check. Look closer. “The step from idyll to
the inferno is a short one.” This is a much darker, more unsettling place. Following
a loosely connected group of people - ranging from a “persnickety pedicurist” to a
subculture of “Furries” (don’t ask, just watch) - through a darkening labyrinth from bad
to worse, things become ever so slightly fairytale frightening. Hailed in Germany as
a masterpiece, Finsterworld’s sophisticated screenplay, beautiful camerawork, and
amazing ensemble cast of characters desperately in need of human warmth reveal the
true reality hidden behind the surreal, the yearning heart behind the comic absurd.

Go Down Death is a wry, sinister realization of a strange new universe, a crossepisodic melange of macabre folktales supposedly penned by the fictitious writer
Jonathan Mallory Sinus. Themes of monotony, personal vulnerability, hope for life’s
progress, yet fears of life itself shroud the highly-stylized, American Gothic-inspired
original film. Soldiers are lost and found in endless woods, a child gravedigger
is menaced by a shape-shifting physician, a syphilitic “john” bares all to a young
prostitute, and a disfigured outcast yearns for the affections of a tone-deaf cabaret
singer. Go Down Death will take you to the realization that life hands us a shovel
to dig our way to freedom. However, it is up to us to ensure we get out instead of
digging our grave in the process.

A STORY ABOUT ART IN A WORLD TRYING ITS BEST TO DESTROY IT.
WHAT IF OUR EVERYDAY PRODUCTS ARE KILLING US?
THUR 3/13 9:15pm (REP) | FRI 3/14 7:00pm (C12) | SAT 3/15 1:30pm (C12)
Battling censorship from a mysterious organization and a missing leading lady, this
meta-film bends reality, space, and time to examine the difficulties of the creative
process. Utilizing harsh jarring images, the filmmakers attempt to create art in an
uncooperative world. Instead of presenting a simple story for the audience, the film
poses complicated questions about censorship, what is art, and who can create
art? Filmed in the Bay Area, the film will allow viewers to step into real life settings to
give us a rare chance to contemplate the questions posed by the film in the same
locations as the characters. This film demands the attention of the audience from the
beginning, and will hold your attention for some time after viewing, filling your head
with question after question.

Hank Dean, a man not given to emotion, struggles to maintain control over his life
during the busiest part of the tree-harvesting season. Like his body, Hank’s wounded
spirit limps along; he’s “out in the trees” and it’s ultimately his choice whether or not
to walk out. Noble Fir is the patiently unfolding story of a strong man who has strung
himself up from circumstance. As the film navigates the shaky curves of grief, it is
held together with a tense and, at times, hopeful score. Like a devastated soul, the
film feels as full as it does hollow—with gaps in time and words—while showcasing
a quiet truth: loss can be hard to live with, and even more difficult to watch someone
try to survive it.

Sankaran, a university dropout, spends his days catching butterflies for his gay
American lover while his father fights for Dalit civil rights. The police discover
Sankaran with the rare specimens and subsequently jail and torture him, bringing

Sergei Paradjanov was a giant bear of a man, intoxicated by beauty and life. Referred
to simply as “Maestro” and revered worldwide by directors such as Fellini, Antonioni,
Godard, and Tarkovsky, his exuberant lifestyle and his insistence on the integrity
of his art landed him repeatedly in jail, denied the right to make films. Despite this,
he created masterpieces that have become acknowledged as the defining works
of three countries’ cinema: Ukraine, Armenia, and Georgia. This brilliant film, not
content simply to tell Paradjanov’s extraordinary life story, evokes in its pyrotechnic
kaleidoscopic style the joyous artistic soul of the master himself. It is an unforgettable,
ecstatic hymn to one of cinema’s greatest, if still far too little known, giants.

Executive produced by Emma Thompson, and with supporting performances by
Gillian Anderson and David Arquette, director Jeffrey Brown’s adaptation of Patricia
McCormick’s National Book Award nominee is a powerful and haunting depiction of
the horror faced by millions and the resilience of the human spirit. Twelve-year-old
Lakshmi lives in her village in the Himalayas. Although her family is poor, Lakshmi’s
joy is infectious. When a monsoon destroys her family’s rice paddy, Lakshmi’s
stepfather negotiates a deal to have her work in the city as a domestic servant.
Filled with hope and pride for the opportunity to help her family, Lakshmi travels to
India, where she learns the unthinkable: she’s been sold into prostitution. Living a
nightmare, Lakshmi must summon her courage and strength to endure cruelty and
find her way out and back to her life.

A forest somewhere in Chile. A wealthy family whiles away the time in their private
demesne, while all around them, and they, completely oblivious, a thrumming
unease hangs in the air. Only their daughter Manena seems able to see beyond their
self-satisfied complacency. Something is not right. Dogs are disappearing. There
is unrest in the land. The shadows lengthen, the woods darken. Stunningly, even
breathtakingly photographed, this is a mesmerizing mood piece of quietly growing
anxiety with a pervasive miasma that undercuts the perfection of the surroundings.
Exquisitely edited, and with pitch-perfect sound and music, this haunting marriage
of rhythm and image is very sophisticated poetic filmmaking by an exciting young
Chilean directress, Marcela Said.

TEENAGE
THOU GILD’ST THE EVEN
WHEN DID WE BECOME “TEENAGERS”?
MAN IS CREATED BY ANXIETY.
SUN 3/9 7:00pm (CAL)
At the dawn of the 20th century, with the advent of child labor laws, a new stage
of life emerged: that of the adolescent. These young people were neither children
nor adults and sought their own identity, determined to be free of the constraints
imposed upon them by society. By the end of WWII, a term was coined to describe
these restless youths: the “teenager.” Inspired by punk author Jon Savage’s book,
director Matt Wolf paints a living collage of the “pre-history” of the teenager, brilliantly
capturing this new idea of youth through rare archival footage, filmed portraits, and
diary excerpts read by four young voices: Jena Malone, Ben Whishaw, Julia Hummer,
and Jessie Usher. The result is a visually captivating and highly entertaining portrayal
of identity, youthful unrest, generational conflict, rebellion, and independence
WED 3/5 7:00pm (C12) | SAT 3/8 1:30pm (C12) | MON 3/10 1:15pm (C12)
In his fifth feature film, Turkish director Onur Ünlü has created an imaginative and
elegiac vision of sorrow. Cemal, an assistant football referee, is full of ineptness and
affliction, and resides in a bucolic Anatolian village where every townsperson is gifted
with extraordinary abilities. Yasemin works in an egg factory, but has Carrie-like
abilities. Cemal sees a way out with Yasemin whilst dealing with his despair, quoting
Shakespeare sonnets to her along the way. But even with a superpower, no one can
prevent the perils of ordinary every day life in this town with two suns and three full
moons. Thou Gild’st the Even is beguiling, unpredictable, and an utterly convincing
portrayal of human foibles—mixing sad fairytales, satire, and poetry all with a striking
and dark, offbeat sense of absurdity.

CREATING YOUR DREAM HOUSE CAN BE A NIGHTMARE.

Suspense and intrigue inform this Hitchcockian look at the American dream of
home ownership gone awry. Tim and Sophie Becker invest their future in a rundown
Brownstone in Brooklyn. With liberal minds and worries of gentrification, the couple
allows the holdover tenants to stay during the remodel. Met with the tenant from hell,
renovation setbacks, and financial troubles, the couple’s relationship becomes as
unstable as the money pit they purchased. What began as a noble dream quickly
turns into moral morass when Sophie accidentally kills an elderly tenant still living
in the building. Attempting to conceal the accident, their dream house becomes a
mausoleum, burying the body of its former inhabitant and the relationship of its new
owners. Starring Corey Stoll (Midnight in Paris, House of Cards) and Sean Dugan
(Smash), this visually understated film is a drama with perfect, subtle performances.

A controversial Russian film tells the story of Erik, a gay classical singer who falls
in love with a petty criminal. Their lives weave in and out of the notes of Franz
Schubert’s Winterreise as Erik transforms his life from one of loneliness and conflict
with the world into one of romantic freedom. For a film centered on a gay relationship
to get made in Russia is remarkable; even more extraordinary is its creation with the
recent passing of the Russian law criminalizing “gay propaganda.” Eavesdrop on their
world: the auditions, the street fights, the parties, and the romance. Quietly observe
their contrasting worlds; those worlds exist, almost out of sight, in a snowy cityscape
big enough to afford them anonymity.

Amanda Bertini is like most teenagers: she plays sports, has a pet, studies, and her
daily routine includes listening to her iPod, texting on her cell phone, and chatting
online. An overnight school field trip to an art museum becomes a rite of passage
for Amanda with heavy drinking at a hotel room party and the meeting of classmate
Alberto. The two quickly develop a relationship, but soon, Alberto’s own online
addictions unexpectedly clash with Amanda’s in a shocking instant, when a video
of them having sex appears online and her world is turned upside down. Director
Stefano Lodovichi’s Asquared questions our online habits through a story about

Famed animator Bill Plympton’s (Idiots and Angels, I Married a Strange Person!)
seventh animated feature Cheatin’ has been done entirely in a hand-painted
style. The beautiful aesthetic of the film accompanies an enchanting musical
score, capturing a tone of romantic silence. In every hand-drawn frame, Plympton
illustrates the passionate, emotional, and carnal connection between two lovers,
plucking audiences’ every nerve and heartstring. His featured lovers’ fairytale-type
romance unravels – their fateful bumper car collision becomes a roller coaster flying
off the tracks, yet still filled with heated nights, forbidden magic, and out-of-body
experiences. Plympton does not disappoint in drawing audiences into a dreamlike
world turned into a nightmare by the realities of life.

Unemployed and recently released from prison, Teppo chats up a beautiful, blonde
waitress, Sari. The two go home together and he immediately falls in love. Enter
Rhamu, Sari’s bi-racial son. Teppo has dreamt of fatherhood but not in these varied
colors. Conflicted, he’s neither able to completely accept Rhamu nor give up on Sari.
Rhamu’s confrontational father and Teppo’s xenophobic brother add to the troubled
mix. Heart of a Lion juxtaposes the concepts of fatherhood with fatherland and makes
both the on-screen characters and the audience pause to ponder. Even though he has
Finland’s coat of arms tattooed on his chest, does Teppo really have the heart of a lion?
An extremely provocative Finnish drama, treated with humor and suspense, Heart of a
Lion is an edgy, empowering story of the universal, human connection.

Norwegian playwright. She recruits an aging actor in the midst of a mid-life crisis
to direct them, but he has one condition: to cast the local hero, a great soccer
player…but, a true moron. But as Tale and her new co-star clash, something else
