SUMMARY:TheGenerationCrisisProject
THECONTEXT
Morethanhalfofallyoungpeopleseekingemploymentcannotfinddecentworkin
manycountriesintheSouthoftheUnion,atrendthathasn’tbeenturnedaround
despiteconsiderablepoliticaleffort,andthatisshiftingtotheEastandNorth.Researchonlyslowlybeginstocapturetheenormousimpactofthedifficultiesanentiregenerationexperiencesduringtheirtransitionfromeducationtoemployment.
Opinionpollsandelectionresultsclearlyshowhowdangerousthedevelopmentis:
Asyouthunemploymentturnsfromaskillsgapissueintoaproblemforeveryyoung
person,includingthosewithuniversitydegrees,thesupportfortheEuropeanUnion
wavers,thevotesforEuroscepticsrise,andanentiregeneration’sbeliefinthevalue
andrelevanceoftheEuropeanideabeginstocrumble.
THEQUESTION
Wewanttopickupthedebatesthatarehappeningacrossthecontinent,acrossthe
politicalspectrum,andacrossgenerations.WhatimpactdoestheEUcrisishaveon
thelivesofyoungEuropeans?Whyisthemediadiscoursesolopsided?Whyisthe
newscoveragesouncritical?WhyisaUnionaswealthyasoursnotabletoprovide
itsyoungpeoplewithaprospectofemployment?
THEAMBITION
We will investigate, question and report the crisis, its causes and effects, the responsesandfailures,theunderlyingreasonsandgrowingresentments.Wedocumentitsimpact,capturedifferentargumentsandportraythekeyplayersinacaptivatingmultimediadossier.Therefore,smallteamswithyoungmedia-makersfrom
SpainandGermanyworkundertheguidanceandwiththesupportofmediaprofessionalstoconceptualise,investigateandreportthecrisisinavarietyofprint,video
andonlineformats.
THEPROJECT
GenerationCrisisisaprojectseriesoftheBerlinbasedthink-tankDemokratie&DialogincollaborationwiththeAssociationofHumanRightsEducatorsAHEADfrom
Barcelona.ThefirstpartofGenerationCrisissuccessfullytookplaceinBerlininNovember2014.ThesecondpartinBrusselsisgenerouslyhostedbytheFriedrichEbert
StiftungEUOfficeBrusselsandfundedbytheGermanRepresentationoftheEuropeanCommission.TheprojectissupportedbytheGermanassociationofyoungmediamakersJugendpresseDeutschland,andCanon.
