South Korea Postal Code System Change: The New 5
Regulatory Update: South Korea Postal Code System Change: The New
5-digit Postal Code Requirement (April 4, 2016)
March 24, 2016
Background
Effective August 1, 2015, the Korean government changed its 6-digit postal code
system to a 5-digit postal code system based on geographic features such as roads
and rivers.
The Korea Customs Service (KCS) disallowed using the old 6-digit postal codes for
customs declarations as of October 1, 2015. Due to a delay in the FedEx system
update, FedEx customers have been required to continue using the old 6-digit postal
codes on shipping documents and in all FedEx shipping tools for all shipments to
and from Korea. To facilitate the smooth customs declaration of each shipment
submitted to the KCS, the FedEx Korea team supported the conversion of the old 6digit postal code provided on documentation to the new 5-digit postal code.
From April 4, 2016, the FedEx system will start to accommodate the new 5-digit
postal codes, so FedEx customers will be required to provide the new 5-digit postal
codes on their shipping documents and when using any FedEx shipping tools for all
export and import shipments to and from Korea. If customers provide the old 6-digit
postal code or an invalid postal code, FedEx will not be able to process the
shipments including pick-up.
