1. Techniques, processes, plant and materials
Purpose of this assignment – The students will recognise factors used in civil engineering and the
process of construction for multi storey buildings
Scenario
You have been asked to produce a report based on the construction of the Marine
and Built Environment Centre (MBEC) at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru to use as
marketing material for your company as it seeks to expand its business.
Photographs of this building under construction can be found on the Construction
Wiki and should be used for research and to help explain your answer.
:
Task 1 - Describe the techniques you used to construct the substructure of the
MBEC building. Your answer must include details of how you completed the ground
works and the methods and information you needed to choose the correct type of
foundation for this structure.
Details of the type of plant used and drawings of two different types of foundation
should also be included.
This provides evidence for P1
Task 2 – Describe the techniques you used to construct the superstructure of the
MBEC building. Your answer should include details of the construction methods
used for the floors, wall claddings and the roof. Drawings should be used to help
illustrate your answers.
This provides evidence for P2
Task 3 – Compare different construction techniques you could have considered
for the construction of the substructure phase of construction. Your answer should
include Advantages and disadvantages as well as any health and safety issues that
may have affected your construction technique
This provides evidence for M1
Task 4 - Compare different construction techniques you could have considered for
the construction of the superstructure phase of construction. Your answer should
include Advantages and disadvantages as well as any health and safety issues that
may have affected your construction technique
This provides evidence for M2
Task 5 - Justify the construction techniques you have chosen for the construction
of the MBEC Building
This provides evidence for D1
Evidence checklist
[Summarise evidence required, e.g. ‘leaflet’, ‘presentation notes’ etc.]
P1 – Describe the techniques you used to construct the substructure of the MBEC building
P2 - Describe the techniques you used to construct the superstructure of the MBEC building.
