DR. NANCY BENHAM - ASD SUPERINTENDENT APPLICANT

DR. NANCY BENHAM
Nancy Benham, Ph.D. has been in the field of Deaf Education for over 25 years. She has
experience working in public and residential schools as well as in teacher preparation
programs at the university level. Nancy has been a teacher, assistant professor,
Coordinator of the parent-infant program at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf,
principal at the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and the director of
the Louisiana School for the Deaf.
Nancy Benham received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Supervision from the
University of Southern Mississippi, her Master’s in Deaf Education from Lamar University
and her Bachelor’s in Speech Pathology and Audiology also from Lamar University. She
studied Education of Multi-Handicapped Hearing Impaired at Gallaudet University.
Her interest in working with the Deaf began when she was in junior high. During her
senior year in high school, she worked as an intern in the public school Deaf class that
confirmed her desire to work in the field of Deaf Education.
Throughout her career, she has held positions including president of the Association of
College Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, appointed by the governor as a
commissioner for the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf, member of the advisory board for
the Deaf Education Alliance in Louisiana, the Louisiana Deaf-Blind Project and Lighthouse
Nancy is the proud mother of Grace (12 years old) and soon to be mother of Luke (8
years old), both deaf and wife of Roy for 25 years.
