this season tied for the second-most
in a season in CS8 history.
In addition, Lantz had eight touchdowns on returns, including the interception return against Glenwood.
He ran back four kickoffs and three
punts for touchdowns.
“I was proud of being a threat on
special teams,” Lantz said. “I really
think that helped us make a run to
the state championship. That got us
better field position, and I think that
was a big factor.”
Defensively, he started for two
years at free safety, snatching 12 interceptions. His 90 tackles ranked
13th in the conference this season.
He is the seventh straight player
from Sacred Heart-Griffin to be

Year, is the tight ends coach at SIU.
Is he the best receiver ever at
SHG? Leonard didn’t say yes and he
didn’t say no.
“He’s right there at the top,”
Leonard said. “We were blessed. He
was blessed and the team was
blessed to have all the other guys
around him like Gary (Wilson) and
Dom (Walton). And a guy like
Timmy (Dondanville) throwing.”
Lantz finished his high school career as the school’s all-time leader in
receiving yardage in a season with
1,242 yards, bettering Mike Pilger’s
effort in 1994 by 1 yard. Lantz is the
career receiving yardage leader with
2,132 yards and stands fifth in points
for a season (158) and sixth for
points in a career with 236.
And most importantly to Lantz, he
was a member of SHG’s third state
championship team in four years.
Lantz said the main motivation this
season came in two forms, starting
with last year’s first-round playoff
loss to New Lenox Providence
Catholic. There also was the 34-31
season-opening loss to Lombard
Montini this year during which the
THE FACTS: Team’s No. 3
receiver with 20 catches for an
average of 18.8 yards per catch and seven TDs;

Cyclones defense was singed for
more than 600 total yards.
“We just didn’t get things accomplished,” Lantz said about the Montini game. “We had a good scheme,
but we just didn’t come to play. We
were nervous. Everyone was nervous for that game. And you have to
give Montini credit. They were a
good football team as well.”
When a 9-0 SHG team lost — on
its home field — to a 5-4 Providence
team in SHG’s first game ever in the
Class 6A playoffs in 2007, the
naysayers were everywhere.
“People were saying how we
couldn’t beat a 6A team and how
Providence and Joliet Catholic and
all of those schools were bigger and
better,” Lantz said. “We came in (this
season) with the most motivation
that we’ve ever had; we proved most
of the state wrong.”
Lo and behold, guess who was
waiting for the Cyclones in this year’s
Class 6A semifinals? None other than
Providence, which came into the playoffs once again at 5-4 and rolled
through three opponents to set up the
Nov. 22 rematch in New Lenox.
Because of the cracked ribs, Lantz
was used as a decoy for much of the
game. But with Dondanville rushing
for 133 yards and Wilson 108 yards,
the Cyclones were in control. However, with the game tied at 10 early
in the fourth quarter, Dondanville
knew who to turn to. His 25-yard TD
pass to Lantz put SHG ahead to stay
on the way to a 24-17 victory.
“That showed that downstate football was as good as Chicago football,
that we could play with them,”
Leonard said. “It was important for
our program to establish ourselves.”
Lantz also proved he can be good
and humble. When asked who he
thought was the main catalyst for the
Cyclones’ offense this season, he
pointed an unassuming finger at the
Dondanville.
“He’s a great quarterback and he’s
real smart,” Lantz said. “He knows
his reads and he very seldom makes
a mistake, and that’s what you want
in a quarterback.
“And he had good receivers
around to help him.”

No. 13.
