Case Study: Northfield Racquet Club
Client : Northfield Racquet and Fitness Club
Sector : Sports and Leisure
Project: LED Lighting Replacement For External Lighting
Northfield Racquet Club is a sports and fitness center in Ontario, Canada.
The external facilities at Northfield Racquet Club, including walkways
and parking lots, were illuminated by a combination of high-pressure
and low-pressure sodium lights. While this type of lighting produced
acceptable light levels when installed, it was nearing the end of its
useful life and provided a great opportunity for an efficiency upgrade.
The brief
After discussing the client’s needs we established four main
project goals:
• Increase safety while in the facility grounds
• Improve the quality of light
• Reduce energy consumption
• Lower lighting maintenance costs
Minimise’ response
Before designing a solution for the client Minimise Energy
Canada conducted a number of site visits to test light levels.
Once this testing was completed lighting design software was
used to test which LEDs were best suited for the job. These
tests showed that instead of performing a standard one for one
lighting retrofit for our client, Minimise would have the freedom
to create a custom lighting solution, which produced a lower
net cost and greater energy reduction.

The project in detail
Products used
Existing lighting
• S pectra II 40W
The existing lighting produced a very warm (orange)
coloured light. The reason for this is the way in which high
and low pressure sodium bulbs create their light, however it
was made worse by the age of the lamps. The lumen per watt
ratio of this technology was extremely low, with the lighting
consuming 175W, 250W and 400W and significantly under
illuminating its sectors.
• S ON 20W/ 60W
LED lighting
In order to meet the requests of the client Minimise were
able to showcase their LED SON lamps, a replacement bulb
for between 60W and 1000W traditional bulbs. In this case
it was decided that 12 x 20W SONs were best suited for the
majority of the work, while also using 2 x 60W SONs and a
40W Spectra II.
Results
The results of this project were quite outstanding. As can be
seen in the before and after pictures, the new 60W LED SON
lamp produces a significantly higher volume and quality of
light than the existing 400W fixture. The light in the ‘after’
picture looks substantially more powerful, while actually
reducing the energy consumption by an incredible 87%,
delivering a payback period of 15 months. This reduction,
along with the decreased maintenance costs, due to the LEDs’
50,000 hour, 5 year guarantee, results in 5-year operational
savings of $6,872.
”The new LED lighting is brighter, more crisp
and consistent than the outdated high
pressure sodium lighting... We are already
looking into LED retrofits for other areas such
as the tennis and squash courts”
