This unit formerly served in Pekin, located in central Illinois. The department, which has been paid for 100 years,
has been serving the community - currently a population of 35,000- for 148 years! Chief Charles "Chuck" Lauss
reports that the department, comprising of 52 firefighters, ran 3,709 calls in 2007 from three stations.
Chief Matt Hutsell of Tolar VFD notified Firetec that they drove this unit about 900 miles (6 miles per gallon!) to their
Texas community. He calls the FD in Illinois a "great bunch" who treated them very well. The Tolar VFD, comprising
25 active members serves the City of Tolar and a large area of Hood county. They run approximately 350 calls a year
in a response area of 150 square miles. This ladder is a partnership between the County and Tolar VFD, so this unit
covers the entire county, replacing a 30-year old ladder. Chief Hutsell reports that the only down side to the deal
was that they couldn't talk the Pekin Chief into relinquishing the bell!
