Philip Emeagwali’s maternal grand mother Mrs. Obam Balonwu ( nee Okudo) was a farmer. She
was born in Nkwelle Ogidi in the 1890s and passed away on December 24, 1966.
This photo was taken at 6C Wilkinson Road, Onitsha, circa 1955, during the ceremony of her
initiation into the Otu Odu (Ivory Society), the most prominent women organization in Onitsha.
