Organic Cotton
As part of our new strategy to
promote positive environmental
change, we are introducing the
Sustainable Edition T, made from
organic cotton. By August 1, three
popular T-shirts—Standard T (2001),
Girly Fine Jersey T (2102), and Girly
Basic T (4305), as well as our Thong
(4313), will be available in the Natural
color of this environmentally friendly
fabric. We’re not stopping here. We
plan to incorporate organic cotton
into our general cotton supply and
expect that by 2004, over 20% of our
cotton consumption will be derived
from organic cotton.

updated original that is supersoft,
lightweight and stretchy. 2. Coming
soon to our comfy Loop Terry
line are the Loop Terry Skirt and
Wristbands. 3. American Apparel’s
panty line has been so popular
that we’ve decided to start a men’s
underwear line. The first piece in this
collection will be the classic Men’s
Boxer Brief, made from combed
cotton Baby Rib. 4. One necessity
that has been on our minds is the
Standard Youth T, which will mimic
our best-selling Standard American T.
5. Lastly, we are soon to introduce
the Unisex Fleece Raglan. This
special garment is reminiscent of
sweatshirts worn in the seventies
but is made from our 100% Combed
California Fleece Cotton. American
Apparel is evolving quickly so be

garments are made to fit, feel, and
look like no other. Our fabrics are
the most innovative in the industry
and are made exclusively from 100%
combed cotton.
Internalized production, where the
workers are part of the company, is
far more efficient than the industry
norm of offshore or onshore subcontraction. At American Apparel,
the workers have a voice and can
influence their own lives as well as
the life of the company.
American Apparel is a capitalist
success as much as a social
success, making the business
more than just a charity that the
conventional competition views as
an economic failure. Recent analysis
proves that American Apparel is one
of the most profitable operations
in the T-shirt industry, making it a
business model that can be applied
to thousands of companies and
industries worldwide.
Throughout the next four years,
American Apparel plans to convert
over 80% of its cotton consumption
to sustainable cotton (organic or
quasi-organic cotton). In 2004,
we plan to utilize at least 20%
environmentally sustainable cotton
and blend it in to our general
production. American Apparel will
also arrange for the recycling of over
half a million pounds of fabric scraps.
We are going to be one of the most
efficient companies in the world,
whereby no community or human
being is adversely affected by our
business practice. American Apparel
will simultaneously maintain a
vigorous commitment to consumer
value by striving to deliver the highest
quality, most economical T-shirts
ever made.

The critical aspect of being
sweatshop free is that we pride
ourselves on making a genuine
effort to provide a dignified work
environment. We believe that
providing our workers with a
progressive, technology driven,
internalized work environment
ultimately promotes the company
as a whole. American Apparel
makes value oriented products and
is more stable because, unlike our
competition, we have created this
new progressive work environment.
We are vertically integrated
whereby no cutting or sewing is
subcontracted to local or third world
sweatshops. Instead of outsourcing
labor, we are bringing the work back
into the company. We have taken
workers off the assembly line and put
them into teams. Not only does this
humanize the work environment but
it actually improves the quality and
accuracy of the work, while reducing
the turnaround time of each garment
to minutes instead of weeks.
Garment workers at American
Apparel typically make an average of
$12 per hour but can earn as much
as $18 per hour. Although these
wages may seem high compared
to the third world wages paid by
other manufacturers, we believe
that by keeping the work inside
the company, we are actually able
to work more efficiently than our
competition, while remaining socially
responsible. Workers can also take
advantage of subsidized lunches,
have access to free phones to call
home, and can use their cell phones
while at their machines. Importantly,
all of American Apparel’s garment
workers have proper lighting above
their sewing machines and work in a
properly ventilated environment. They
have access to company subsidized
health insurance for $8 per week and
benefit from such programs as free
English classes, massage therapy,
and subsidized bus passes.
Most importantly, at American
Apparel we are committed to
providing year-round and lifetime
employment to our workers and
are attentive to the needs of all our
employees. At American Apparel,
we are next generation capitalists
committed to redesigning business
in such way that the enterprise
is commercially successful while
the quality of the workplace is not
compromised. We are committed
to redesigning the paradigm
of production so that it is more
commercially and socially viable
than other companies within the
manufacturing space.

One of the critical components of

of vertical integration. We do not
subcontract any sewing, cutting, or
knitting to any local or third world
sweatshops. At American Apparel,
garment workers, graphic designers,
photographers, engineers, and
marketers collaborate under one
roof to produce the most cuttingedge, commercially viable, socially
responsible T-shirts available. By
relying on vertical integration (a
system more productive than the
existing paradigm of pyramid-like
subcontracting to impoverished work
places), we are initiating a new form
of capitalism that is actually more

Our Fabric: 30-Singles Combed Ring Spun Cotton
Organic:
Quite simply, the difference between
our cotton and the cotton of other
leading brands is the finishing
process. Our Combed Ring Spun
Cotton crafted from 30-singles
yarn knitted on a 28 gauge knitting
machine is noticeably softer and
higher in quality than the carded
cotton used by other brands.

Combed Cotton Fibers
Ring Spun / 30-Single Yarn
Finer 28 Gauge Weave
Superior Printability
The combing process separates
80% of the more desirable (longer,
thinner, more even) fibers from the
less desirable (shorter, coarser, less
consistent) fibers.
A higher count of thinner fibers are
tightly twisted together to make a
stronger, smoother, finer (30) gauge
thread.
30-singles yarn is woven on a 28
gauge machine, producing a finer
knit fabric that is softer and lighter
to touch.
Our 30-singles combed ring spun cotton fabric is the
best possible surface for high resolution screen printing,
embroidery, and embellishing.
Initiating a new effort: As an
important step, we will begin a
rapid program of integrating organic
cotton or similar into our production
process. This will take place at two
levels: (1) we will offer an organic or
transitional organic version of our
garments in our most popular styles,
which will be available in a natural
color; (2) we will incorporate organic
cotton or similar into our general
cotton supply.

Printability
Carded cotton is a mixture of ragged,
thicker, short fibers. Cheaper for
manufacturers to produce, this
cotton is rough, heavy, and lower
in quality.
Fewer coarser fibers are blown
together, resulting in a loosely bound,
thicker (18) gauge, heavier, rougher
thread.
Most cotton jersey is created on a 20
gauge knitting machine. The result is
a looser knit, heavier material that is
coarse to touch.
The 18-singles open ended cotton used by other leading
brands does not yield comparable results to what can be
achieved when using our fabric.
Sustainable Edition T-shirts
and Thong: Made from luxuriously
soft transitional organic cotton, our
Sustainable line debuts in four of our
popular styles–Girly Basic T (4305),
Girly Fine Jersey T (2102), Standard
American Fine Jersey T (2001), and
Thong (4313).
Benchmarks for the future:
By 2004 we expect that over 20%
of our cotton consumption will
be derived from environmentally
friendlier sources and we are
working closely with the Organic
Consumers Association (www.org
anicconsumers.org) to obtain their
endorsement of our overall plan.
Within 4 years, we expect that over
80% of our cotton consumption
will be derived from transitional
or pure organic cotton. American
Apparel is setting new standards
of ecological consciousness
within the garment industry while
encouraging consumers to adopt
higher standards of ethical and
environmental integrity.
Additional environmental
outreach: We recycle most of our
fabric scraps and have manufactured
garments such as our Thong (style
4313) from these leftover fabric
pieces.

Carded Cotton Fibers
The problem: 25% of world
pesticide use occurs during the
cotton cultivation process; pesticide
use is proven to have a detrimental
effect on the environment and is
suspected of causing 8000 deaths
per year.
Fine Jersey
This fabric is the most printable
in the industry. It is also the most
comfortable because it is knitted
with 30-singles Combed Ring Spun
Cotton. Conventional brands only
use 18-singles. Intentionally lighter in
weight, Fine Jersey remains just as
opaque as heavier fabric yet weighs
only 4.3 oz per sq. yard or 145g per
sq M. All styles beginning with “2” are
made with Fine Jersey. 145g per sq
M. All styles beginning with “2” are
made with Fine Jersey.
Stretch:
Baby Rib
Actual Size
Our Baby Rib is flexible, durable,
and allows for a 100% stretch. This
fabric provides a perfect surface
for printing, embroidering, or heat
transferring. Most Baby Rib garments
come in sizes S, M, L, and XL;
however, when a one-sized woman’s

To reduce shrinkage, our fleece is

making it stretchy. Sheer Jersey is
an excellent surface for printing. It

Heavy in weight, opaque to the eye,
this fabric is used for only a few of
our garments. It is the perfect fabric
for style 7319, as it offers support to

were in the 70’s and 80’s. Most
contemporary T-shirts made by
leading brands cater to the Boomer
Generation (former hippies who are

Standard American line is sized for
two categories: (1) Men of all ages
with a younger build, even if they are
larger; (2) Women of all ages who
do not desire the form-fitting look
of Classic Girl yet refuse to wear the
oversized, unshapely T-shirts of the
leading conventional brands.

Dear American Apparel,
I just finished reading your mission statement and must say I am quite
impressed with your philosophy on the dignity of the worker in the workplace.
It is a position that is much needed in the world and especially in America
today. Although I am sad to see that you do not carry this “philosophy” into your
advertising. I am disheartened that you resort to the exploitation of women in
your sexual poses of teenage looking girls to sell your women’s products. I recall
one small mailer that was on the verge of what I can only describe as soft porn,
I threw it away so my nine year old son would not accidentally see it. Does your
philosophy on the dignity of the human person stop just short of using sex to
sell your product? Your product is very good and the quality sells more than
any nipple-clad open mouth little girl will. Please keep this in mind when you
make your advertising decisions just as you have with your innovating workplace

I visited American Apparel this friday, and to tell you the truth I have never been
to a manufaturing plant, but this place blew me away. Very impresive on the
setup and the quick production. What you offer to your employees is what
should be offered in other factories throughout the world. American Apparel
sets an amazing example for any buisness no matter what it is. The company
and its employees made me look at my goal career in a whole new way. My
dream is to also run a manufacturing firm. I’m sure your a busy man as I’am a

on your video. My compliments to what looks like a fantastic company to work
for. I’m impressed, I’ve been in the Apparel Industry all my life. I worked my
way up the technical ladder to top positions with well known apparel companies. After seeing your video, I regret that I was not aware of American Apparel
years ago. I would have jumped at the chance of working for a company like
yours, that really not only looks after its people, but also gives them a decent
