ISSUE 2015 Circle 1000 Raises over $750K in 2015 Thank you for supporting Circle 1000 today and through the years to bring exceptional staff, scholarship and cutting edge programs to benefit all of the cancer patients and their families who come to Hoag in their time of need. Beth Knapp & Father Gregory Boyle Our 28th Annual Circle 1000 Founders' Brunch, held on May 4, 2015, was a morning filled with laughter and poignant introspection from Father Gregory Boyle. He opened his world to us with the humorous and touching stories of the men and women who come to him and Homeboy Industries to turn their lives around. Father Boyle, who is in remission, brought us to laughter, tears and silence during his keynote speech. This year we also celebrated the memory of our dear friend, Arden Flamson. Those of us who knew her have the honor of remembering the woman who passionately dedicated herself to service. She would've been proud of our accomplishments and urged us to continue on, knowing that every effort we make helps one more patient at Hoag access the care and advanced treatments that may save their life. We also called upon cancer survivors and their caretakers to stand up so we could recognize their courage and the hope they bring to all of us. As I reflect on this tradition, I'm honored to be part of a group of generous donors and friends who see how we are making a difference in cancer care. • • • • • • • $250,000: E xperimental Therapeutics Program Startup Expenses $150,000: Arden Flamson Nurse Navigator for Breast and Gynecological Cancer $125,000: Data and Quality Analyst $100,000: Clinical Research Coordinator $50,000: Oncology Staff Education $50,000: Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship Endowment $50,000: Annual Oncology Nursing Symposium Once again, I am honored to be part of such an extraordinary group. In helping launch the High Risk Melanoma Clinic, Circle 1000 has provided a much needed service for patients who are at higher risk for developing this disease to minimize or eliminate their risk or receive the earliest diagnosis possible. Orange County has been noted to have one of the highest incidence rates of melanoma in the country. If there is a delay in recognizing and removing a melanoma, it can spread throughout the body. But when discovered early, melanoma is curable. NNurse Navigator for 2015 - $150,000 Because of your generosity, Sarah* has had Melanoma nurse navigator, Lori Berberet at her side. While pregnant with her first child, Sarah learned she had melanoma and that it had already spread to her brain. Lori Berberet arranged for Sarah to have minimally invasive gamma knife surgery with Hoag’s expert neurosurgeon within days of Sarah’s baby’s birth. They became so close that Sarah asked that Lori be present when she received her prognosis after surgery. When Sarah learned she would need additional treatment, she was scared and uncertain of what to do next. Lori quickly arranged for Sarah to see the melanoma surgeon, Dr. Burt Eisenberg and melanoma medical oncologist, Dr. George Semeniuk at the same time in Hoag’s Melanoma Clinic to come up with the best treatment plan for Sarah. Lori is now helping Sarah navigate each step of that plan and talks with Sarah, Sarah’s husband and mother to answer all of their questions and concerns on Sarah’s treatment and is a constant source of compassion and support. * Name changed to protect patient’s identity 8 C IR C L E O F S UP P ORT Nationally Recognized Oncology BHoag's Nursing Conference - $50,000 Hoag's 10th Annual Oncology Nursing Conference, "Embracing Excellence," was made possible by the generosity of Circle 1000. As newer cancer agents and treatments are developed, nurses now more than ever need be informed about side effect management. Circle 1000's support not only empowers nurses to stay updated, but gives them working knowledge to best support patients through their cancer journey. During this two-day event, 180 oncology and radiation oncology nurses (including 69 Hoag nurses, as well as 8 Hoag Oncology physician office staff nurses) learned from the nationally- and internationally-known experts in the field of oncology care. This conference which attracted nurses from California, Oregon, Washington and Arizona, provided a comprehensive learning experience that covered practical strategies and tools, clinical content as well as survivor stories. S Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarship Endowment - $50,000 Circle 1000 plays an important role in helping Hoag reach critical nursing education objectives. This year, Hoag awarded multiple Sandy Sewell Oncology Nursing Scholarships to nurses earning advanced degrees. 2015 Scholarship recipients working toward advanced degrees: Nurse Scholar Degree in Progress Current Hoag Department Nursing School Attending Andrea Beaty MSN / NP 8 West Oncology Unit Cal State University, Long Beach Steven Evans MSN / NP COTC Vanguard University Carol Funke BSN Radiation / Oncology Vanguard University Rosalba Galvan BSN GYN / URO Chamberlain School of Nursing Daron Igwe BSN 8 West Oncology Unit Chamberlain School of Nursing Heidi Mcniff BSN GYN / URO Chamberlain School of Nursing Sandra Pollet BSN COTC University of Texas Arlington Janene Stapleton BSN COTC Grand Canyon University Akiko White BSN GYN / URO Chamberlain School of Nursing Ann Marie Williams BSN 8 West Oncology Unit Vanguard University $166,000: Oncology Nursing Scholarships 40 total oncology nursing scholarships awarded in 2015 39 scholarships expected to be awarded in 2016 I S S U E 2 015 9 AAmethyst Circle Kris and Jay Carnahan Howard Chastain Clara M.
