Mission Statement
Bishop Amat Memorial High School is a four-year coeducational Archdiocesan Catholic high school. The
mission of the school is to form a faith-filled community
and to provide a quality education that addresses the
needs of a culturally and academically diverse student
body. The comprehensive instructional program flows
from a college preparatory curriculum that empowers
students to recognize their potential and to meet
educational and life challenges in the future. The school,
working in partnership with parents and the community,
promotes education in Goodness, Discipline and
Knowledge by preparing students to embrace Gospel
values, to respect themselves and others, to become
life-long learners, and to contribute positively to the
community.

a message from
leadership
Dear Friends:
In the 2009-2010 Report, I expressed the hope that we
were “moving out of the economic doldrums…and about
to experience better times.” Unfortunately, events of
the succeeding twelve months proved my hope to be
largely unfounded. The 2010-2011 school year was very
difficult for our many low income families. We were
informed on numerous occasions of parents losing their
jobs, being reduced to part-time employment status and
even forfeiting ownership of their homes. Although we
provided record amounts of financial aid, many parents
were forced to withdraw their children from the school,
frustrating our efforts to achieve an enrollment above the
1400 level.
All of these grim realities serve to emphasize the need to
redouble our efforts to exploit resources outside of the
school budget to fund tuition aid to our students. In the
2009-2010 Report, I called your attention to two programs
that we have established for this purpose. I am happy to
report that both of them have been eminently successful
in 2010-2011.
The Named Scholarships have increased in number from 22
to 30 and in capitalization from $1,400,000 to $1,970,000.
The capitalization of the Endowment has increased from
approximately $900,000 to approximately $1,163,000 – a
growth of almost 30%. Interest from these two sources
will be used to provide financial aid to needy students.
This will be in addition to some $300,000 written into the
2011-2012 budget for this purpose.
I am deeply grateful to all the alums and other friends
who supported these and several other advancement
programs during the past year. I constantly remember
you in my Masses and prayers. Please do likewise for us as
we strive each day to lead this great school to ever loftier
heights of academic excellence.

Social networking technologies
have produced a significant
change in the process of
“keeping in touch” with families,
friends from high school years,
business
associates,
and
beyond. For many, the professional site “Linkdin” serves
as a platform for keeping in touch with and expanding
business associates. For many years younger kids kept
in touch through “MySpace.” However the world’s largest
social networking group is now “Facebook.”
On any simple search of Facebook one can find numerous
groups related to friendships woven while at Amat. As I
have personally tried to use this medium to keep in touch
with my own children as well as thousands of former
students, I have found it to be heartwarming. On one hand
alums are celebrating accomplishments, relationships, and
especially children and grandchildren. On the other too
often we read about requests for prayers as they encounter
parents who are hospitalized or others prepare for medical
procedures with uncertain outcomes. Overall, however, this
enhanced method of keeping in touch with each other’s
lives has enhanced our belief in the importance of building
positive relationships during these growth-filled years of
high school.
The Amat Tradition of building a family spirit in these four
years of high school has not changed. In light of our new
ability to “keep in touch” we are doing our best to include
new mediums at maintaining the “Amat Family” Spirit that
we trust was woven through experiences on our campus.
We hope to encourage your participation as a loyal Amat
follower. TheLance.org is now the location of the former
printed paper. SchoolTube.com is now the location of
the weekly news magazine that is produced through the
campus Video Production Club “Lancers in the News.”
Bishopamat.org not only hosts our school web site but
also our Alumni Portal and we are working on improving
the record of our storied athletic history.
Some new ventures, such as our Robotics Team have
a web presence amatrobotics.weebly.com/, some
traditional groups: the choir is at bishopamatchoir.
wordpress.com/; the band is at www.bishopamatband.
com/. The academic side of campus life even has
a “moodle hub” to allow teachers and students to
interact more readily bishopamat.moodlehub.com/. It
is an exciting new world of instantaneous worldwide
communication and we have set our goals for
participation as a family high.
Bishop Amat hosts two Facebook pages: Bishop Amat
High School - www.facebook.com/bishopamat and

mediums, please join us.

Bishop Amat High School Annual Report 2010-2011
I am very pleased to present
you with the Bishop Amat High
School Annual Report for 20102011. While the main purpose of
the publication is to provide our
stakeholders with an accounting
of my stewardship of the financial resources of the school,
we also highlight our many achievements in the fields of
religious formation, campus ministry, Christian service,
academics, fine and performing arts and athletics. Not
least among these is the renewal of our accreditation by
WASC/WCEA at the very highest level of excellence for
the coming six years.

Bishop Amat is one of the few Catholic co-ed high schools that enjoys a
very positive social image among teenagers. I wanted to attend Bishop
Amat because of this reputation within the community. Never in my life
had I realized how interconnected every moment is until I attended Amat.
My grade in one class influenced my curriculum decisions, which were
inundated with AP and honors classes, and kept me challenged. I had
dedicated teachers that were always willing to sacrifice their time for me
to fully grasp the concepts being presented. Amat fosters a warm, caring
environment where two students enter as strangers and graduate as family.
The numerous extracurricular activities in which I participated allowed
me to pour my heart into Amat and make it my home. I feel incredibly
prepared for my journey through college because block scheduling and
difficult classes have taught me valuable time management skills.
I chose to attend Bishop Amat because of
its reputation for providing good education,
discipline, and an environment that develops my
faith as a Catholic. My education here has given
me the essential skills I need to be prepared for
college and the future.
The accessibility of my teachers, some of whom
I constantly asked questions, allowed me to
fully understand the materials I was taught. The
clubs, extracurricular activities, and family-like
atmosphere known as the Amat Family helped
me come out of my shell and learn to enjoy high
school life. It is for these reasons that I am proud
to be a Lancer.

ccreditation
Excellence
by Dr. Merritt Hemenway, ’64 &
current Bishop Amat Principal
The basic accreditation agency for all high
schools and colleges in the western states
is the Western Association of Schools and
Colleges, affectionately known as WASC.
You will see the WASC seal on virtually all
high schools and colleges in California,
Hawaii and Guam. There are similar regional
accreditation agencies in other states.
Historically the process of accreditation
itself started when the California Catholic
Bishops asked superintendents to develop
a process of certification of the quality of
the Catholic Schools. Public schools soon
followed with the regional accreditation
system and the two organizations have
cooperated in the process for most of
the twentieth century. This accreditation
approval in high schools has been driven by
the University of California.
In recent years, in an effort to preserve the
Catholicity of our schools, the Western
Catholic Education Association (WCEA)
has stepped up its involvement with the
accreditation process. With public schools
facing budget cuts and the difficulty
of funding public school educators to
participate in Catholic School visits, WCEA
has taken over organizing its own school
visits while using the same protocol as the
WASC agency. Thus, when Amat received
its accreditation renewal through WCEA it
was jointly accredited through WASC for
the same term.
The highlight of this process at Amat was
that not only did the visiting team review
our total educational program, they looked
at all we do with an eye toward how we
respond as a Catholic institution. Because
of this comprehensive review we were most
pleased that not only did the visitors find
excellence in all we do, they felt strong
enough about our ability to continue the
quest for excellence that they approved a
full six-year term of accreditation without
the traditional three-year one day revisit.
This is the highest level of accreditation
possible through either agency.
We are proud of our faculty, staff,
administrators and especially parents and
students who worked cooperatively to
bring Amat to the excellence that it enjoys.
We are grateful to the many alumni who
have contributed to this excellence not just
as living examples of an Amat Lancer, but
in school events, career days, speakers, and
donors.
As a final note, Bishop Amat also enjoys
accreditation by the International Baccalaureate
Organization (IBO) as a school authorized
to offer this prestigious curriculum. We are
currently one of about twenty-eight Catholic
High Schools in the United States with this
significant seal of approval. Only two such
schools are in California. The IB Curriculum
is challenging but it is considered the finest
overall preparation for the University level
in the world. Many Universities, including
the University of California, will waive one
year of general education classes for a
student who earns the IB Full Diploma with
a certain score on the assessments. Among
the five cohort years Bishop Amat has had
89 seniors complete the program and has
seen 30 alumni earn the full diploma and
8 of those achieve such excellent scores
to earn a full year of college credits. This
accreditation is being renewed during the
2011-2012 school year.
“We are grateful to the many alumni who have
contributed to this excellence not just as living
examples of an Amat Lancer, but in school events,
career days, speakers, and donors” – Dr. Hemenway.

Bishop Amat High School Annual Report 2010-2011
During the 2010-2011 academic school
year Bishop Amat High School completed
the renewal of its accreditation status. This
renewal is a normal process in schools
and colleges. What is noteworthy about
this experience at Amat was that we
achieved renewal at the highest level of
approval as well as the fact that we now
hold accreditation through three different
accrediting agencies.

Summer 2010
• Reunions Held The classes of 1980 and 1985 held their
reunions at Bishop Amat on August 7, 2010. Both events
were well-attended and a good time was had by all. For
upcoming reunion information, see page 17 or log onto the
Alumni Portal at http://alumni.bishopamat.org.
• Summer Upgrades During the summer, Amat undertook
many projects to enhance the school property and facilities.
The school installed a new phone system to replace the
one that was 10 years old, purchased 80 new computers,
additional printers, projectors, voice lift devices, and a
new server. In addition, to facilitate high-quality television
reception in all of the classrooms, a new co-axial cable
was installed throughout the campus. Lastly, the stadium
received a new sound system and additional lighting was
placed behind the bleachers.
• School Year Starts in August After much discussion, the
2010-2011 school year started August 17 with Freshman
Orientation and August 18 for all students.
Fall 2010
• New 5 Block Schedule To accommodate a new scheduling
arrangement, a 5 block schedule option was added. As the
year progressed, many external events created the need
for some schedule changes and a decision was made to
eliminate the remaining 5 block schedule dates listed on the
calendar.
• Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA)
Introduced Nine of Amat’s experienced teachers participated
in this state-funded program co-sponsored by the California
Department of Education (CDE) and the Commission on
Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). BTSA is designed to fulfill
the requirements for clearing the California Single Subject
credential.
• First Semester Exams Given Before Christmas The first
semester ended quickly and exams were given prior to the
Christmas break. By beginning the school year earlier than
usual, faculty and students were given a two and a half week
holiday vacation before the start of the second semester.
Winter 2011
• Faculty Retreat Focuses on
Catholic Identity The faculty
and staff developed an outline
on how to handle the new
service requirement of the Los
Angeles Archdiocese.
• Mother-Son and FatherDaughter Dances Held The
Kathleen Wiard Berg, ‘81 dances the night away
with her son, David Berg, ‘11, at the
beloved Mother-Son and Father2010 Mother-Son Dance.
Daughter Dances allowed for
family relationships to be strengthened and memories to be
made.
• WCEA/WASC Team Visits Amat The school received
numerous, positive comments from the committee
regarding the “stellar aspects of the school.” As a result,
Bishop Amat’s accreditation was extended for the full six
year term to 2017 (see article on page 3 written by Dr.
Merritt Hemenway, Principal).

the demands of a challenging and rigorous curriculum.
Members of the 2010 ASB welcome students at Freshman Orientation.
2010-2011
lancer athletics
Throughout the 2010-2011 school year, six Lancer athletic
teams won their respective league championships. The
efforts made by both students and coaches were truly
remarkable as they set out to reach their goals and make
their mark in the history of Amat.
The football season started
off with perfection under
the leadership of Coach
Steve Hagerty, ’80, and
the players took the field
holding onto the motto of
“Blue Collar Attitude II.” The
Lancers won their first nine
games finishing the final
game in the sequence with a
score of 52-7 against Notre
Dame. After a bye week, the
Lancers unfortunately gave
Bishop Alemany two quick
touchdowns and fell in the
league championship game
with an ending score of 3830. The first round playoff game was held with great home
field pageantry and tradition against Tesoro. While Amat
worked hard together as a team, Tesoro made two quick
scores and the Lancers lost 31-21. The Lancer football team
finished 2nd in the Serra League and made it to first round
of the CIF Pac -5 Division. All CIF was awarded to junior
Jalen Moore and senior Christian Orduno.
Other fall sports fared well as both boys and girls cross
country made the CIF Preliminary meet. Volleyball earned
a wild card spot in the playoffs and came close to upsetting
the number one seed losing two very close matches in the
first round.
In winter, boys’ basketball played a spectacular game
against Serra and eventually finished second in league.
The girls’ basketball team won league and went to the CIF
semi-finals where they eventually lost. They were, however,
offered an invitation to the State tournament and many
Amat fans traveled to San Diego to support them. The
Lady Lancers fell in the final fourth quarter. The Del Rey
League MVP was awarded to senior Andrea Villanueva
and All CIF was awarded to seniors Andrea Villanueva and
Leticia Galarza.
In Spring, the Lancers continued to excel in their given
sports. The boys’ golf team won the title of Del Rey League
Champions and CIF qualifiers were junior Andy Prather and
senior Evan Hartnett. Andy Prather was also recognized as
the Del Rey League MVP.
Head Coach Dan Lodolo was named “Girls’ Track Coach
of the Year” and the team’s final standings included 3rd
place in the Del Rey League and taking 3rd place overall
in the CIF Division III. Kylie Price, Margaret Taylor, Madison
Herrera, and Iliana Velazquez placed 3rd in the CIF Division
III Girls 4x100 relay. Senior Kylie Price won the CIF Division
III – 100 Meters Champion and was awarded runner-up at
State. She was also crowned champion in the CIF Division
III 200 meters and runner-up in the long jump. Kylie was
recognized as the San Gabriel Valley Tribune Track Athlete
of the Year and will be attending UCLA in the fall.
Boys’ tennis made the playoffs and succeeded into the
second round, which was another Amat first. The swim team
did well in the new Miramonte League and CIF qualifiers
included Bryan Judson, Jacob Caropino, Andre Villa, Javier
Chavez, Melissa Osuna, Cindy Carrillo, Lani Burdette, and
Mallory Lopez. Arian Rodriguez and Brandon Rexius also
won their first-ever CIF championship in diving.
The softball team won 1st Place in the Del Rey League
and made it to the semi-finals in CIF. All CIF was awarded
to senior Natalie Sanchez and Casandra Padilla was
recognized as the Del Rey League MVP. Coach Jesse
Mendez was recognized by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune
as the “Coach of the Year.” The baseball team won 1st
place in the Del Rey League and were once again crowned
as the CIF Division IV Champions at Dodger Stadium. All
CIF players included seniors Adam Alcantara, David Berg
and junior Rio Ruiz. Rio was also recognized as the Del Rey
League MVP, CIF Player of the Year, Tribune Player of the
Year and Tribune Athlete of the Year. Coach Andy Nieto
was honored with the awards of CIF Coach of the Year and
Tribune Coach of the Year.
The athletic year was excellent both on the field and in
the classroom with all programs but one having a team’s
cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Boys’ wrestling also won the Mission League for the 5th
consecutive year and fared well in the playoffs with a final
standing of 1st Place League Champions in the Miramonte
League and first round of CIF.
On Friday, March 4, with a season record of 27-1 the Lady
Lancers entered the CIF Champion game at Warren High
School in Downey to face the team that gave them their
only loss. They came away with a 1-0 victory and the first
CIF girls’ soccer title in school history. A new banner was
raised in the Carroll Center recognizing this tremendous
accomplishment.

Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Amat High School:
Keeping tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength
of our school. Due to the condition of the economy, many families are unable to send a child to Bishop Amat High School
or are unable to have a child continue to attend the school. The primary reason for student withdrawal is the inability to pay
the tuition.
It is of primary importance that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end,
the school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Monies raised through this year’s Annual Appeal
will be directed to current and future students of families who want to attend but cannot afford the entire cost. Please
consider making a donation to help a future Lancer obtain the same gift that you received.
To obtain information on establishing a Named Scholarship, please contact Ms. Deborah Oswald, Development Director at

rooted in
the amat tradition
France Cordova, ‘65
President, Purdue University
I have a full-time job in the Midwest, so I
cannot volunteer to help with activities at the
school; therefore, I contribute financially. I am
very proud of what has been accomplished at
Bishop Amat. I received a fine education there
during the 1960s, and I was the first girl to be
admitted to Stanford from the school.
One of my classmates and best friends, Ann
Kenney, joined the Peace Corps and drowned
in a boating accident in Micronesia. (She
was West Covina’s teenage miss and I was
her runner-up. She went on to compete at
the State level for the California Junior Miss
title.) Another classmate, one who invited me
to the Valentine Ball, was Joe Albertini. He
volunteered for military service and was killed
in Viet Nam. I visit his name on the memorial
in D.C. every time I make a trip there. I wanted
to honor these two Bishop Amat friends
by contributing scholarship money. I intend
to increase my gift next year. I would like to
endow named scholarships in their honor so
that future Bishop Amat students would learn
a little bit about these two remarkable young
people.
At this time when the country is so financially
strapped, it is important that everyone who
has some capacity to help do so. Bishop Amat
should continue to communicate with alumni –
what are its goals, and what forms of assistance
would help the school to achieve those goals.
Since I am in the field of education, I appreciate
that the cost of a quality education can deter
some students from being able to attend.
Scholarship money is always helpful to make
quality education affordable. I am grateful that
I am in a position to help.

Bishop Amat High School Annual Report 2010-2011
8
As a 1973 graduate of Bishop Amat, I have always felt a connection
to the “Amat Family.” I loved the four years I spent at Amat and
the educational and extra-curricular activities the school had to
offer. I was the second of five in my family to graduate from Amat
and I know it was not easy financially for my parents. As difficult as
it may have been, my father never gave up on his commitment to
Catholic education and the financial responsibility that came with it.
Remembering my father’s commitment motivates me to give to the
school so that others may enjoy the benefits of an Amat education.
I am fortunate that my husband supports my commitment to my
Alma Mater. Our son, Robert, graduated from Amat in 2007 and our
daughter Kati is an incoming freshman, Class of 2015. We will continue
to support Bishop Amat because we believe in the school and the
spirit of the Amat Family.
Moak Family
As alums (Jim ’71, Carol (Lanigan) ’72), and parents of alums (Erin ’97,
Colleen ’98, Katie ’01), we have experienced firsthand the tremendous
value of an Amat education. Carol has worked here since 1990, and
Jim spent many years coaching Amat softball - they have also seen
and heard inspirational success stories of hundreds of our graduates.
Bishop Amat offers so much in the areas of academics, athletics,
performing arts, and clubs, but, most importantly, a Christ-centered
community in which students and their families can learn and grow.
We hope that the Amat Legacy Scholarship can assist families who
want to be part of the Amat tradition.

gifts in kind
In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contribute goods or “in-kind gifts” to Bishop
Amat during the year. Many of these gifts are made in support of our Annual Extravaganza, Lancer Classic, and
Golf Tournament. Contributions such as computer hardware, library books, and printing support are other ways to
assist the school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and businesses who have contributed to
Bishop Amat during the 2010-2011 school year.
