PRO3 2009 Calendar Release Party
Join us at Speedware Motorsports in
Redmond on November 1 at 11 a.m. to
celebrate the release of the 2009 PRO3
calendar. This year, money raised from
calendar sales will benefit the activities
of the BMW CCA Foundation. We’re
upping our print order from 150 in
2008 to 1,000 copies in 2009 and will
be peddling them nationwide!
For those in attendance that day—
have fun by getting your own 2009
PRO3 calendar signed by the PRO3
drivers in attendance! We’ll be having
an informal lunch at Speedware and
enjoy some in-car videos on the big
screen from some of the best PRO3
November 1
racing action. This will include the
frenetic “inverted start” at the Special
August race at Pacific Raceways. Ever
seen six-wide into Turn 2?
There will be some great raffle prizes
provided by Speedware and Griot’s
Garage. Speedware will also have some
great promotional specials to get you
started on your holiday shopping!
Please bring an extra $5 cash to help
cover the cost of lunch. For planning purposes, RSVP to [email protected].

2009 BMW PRO3 Calendar on Sale
The third Annual BMW PRO3 racing calendar is available for sale starting
November 1. This year we have a new lower price of $9.95 plus postage. This
high quality calendar features PRO3 images captured through the lens of local
photographer Curtis Creager. Curtis followed the PRO3 circus as they raced
at tracks in Seattle, Portland, Spokane and Mission, BC. Special thanks to Club
member Matt Ferbache who designed the calendar. For those who own the
2008 calendar, this one is ten times better! The proceeds from the calendar
will benefit the BMW CCA Foundation. You can purchase your calendar from
Speedware Motorsports in Redmond, or order on-line at www.SpeedwareMotorsports.com. A special thanks to Speedware Motorsports for serving as our
sole distributor of the PRO3 calendar. They are receiving no compensation for
their efforts, which allows more money to go to the BMW CCA Foundation.

O n saturday, November 8,
the Club will be taking one of
our periodic trips to automotive nirvana. In this case, we’ll
be visiting the restoration shop
of Dennison International,
one of the world’s best classic
car restorers. Dennison
restored Jon Shirley’s 1938
Alfa 2900B, which went on
to win Best of Show at the
2008 Pebble Beach Concours
d’Elegance. In the same show,
the Romuls ERA prepared by
Dennison won Best of Class.
Butch Dennison and
fourteen other employees
work in a 14,000 square foot
shop in Puyallup. With the
resources at their disposal,
the experienced and talented
team can do everything except paint and chrome, which
they subcontract out. We will
see all the areas of the shop
and their current projects.
Our visit will be hosted
by Butch Dennison himself.
We’ll have a chance to see
the fabrication shop, the
engine shop with in-ground
dyno and the assembly shop,
among the other work areas.
Butch and his crew are
usually consulted before a
client purchases a car. At
this level in the car hobby,
there usually is a restoration
strategy before the purchase. Current works-in-progress
can be viewed and Butch
will explain what is going
on. These projects include a
1934 Bugatti Type 59, a 1981
BBLM 512 Ferrari, a 1959
Ferrari California spyder and
a 1997 Schumacher F1 Ferrari.
Dennison International
will be supplying coffee and
refreshments. The meeting
time is from 10 a.m. until
noon. An RSVP will be
appreciated and help with
planning.
Dennison International is
located in Puyallup at 11203
Benston Dr. E., Puyallup, WA.

Banquet Speaker: Chip Hanauer
O ur speaker for this year’s banquet
will be local hydroplane hero, Chip
Hanauer. Now retired from racing, he
was one of the two most successful
hydroplane racers of all time. The other
being Bill Muncey, Hanauer’s mentor.
Chip Hanauer was born on July 1,
1954 in Seattle. He was always in love
with racing. His childhood hero was
Jim Clark because Clark represented a
great contrast. Off the track, Clark was a
gentleman and a farmer from Scotland.
But he also excelled in the aggressive
sport of auto racing at the highest level.
Hanauer probably would have pursued
auto racing had he been born elsewhere,
but growing up in Seattle meant the
biggest show in town was hydroplane
racing.
He raced his first small hydroplane
when only nine years old. He started
investing the money earned on his paper
route and in his first full year of competition came in fifth nationally in his
age class.
In 1976, at only 22, he got his first
shot at driving an unlimited class hydro.
In 1979 he scored his first unlimited
class win in the Miss Squire Shop. In
1982, he scored his first Gold Cup win
in Detroit. It was the start of a string
of seven straight wins, unprecedented
in the sport.
He changed teams, racing for the
Atlas Van Lines Team, then the Miller
Team and later Miss Circus Circus.
8
ZüNDFOLGE
In 1991, he left boat racing
to try his hand at auto racing
with Toyota. He even won a
race in Portland. He also drove
a Porsche 962 at Daytona
with Team Seattle in their
early years.
Wherever he went he won. Besides
seven straight Gold Cups, he won multiple American Power Boat Association
unlimited championships.
In 1991, he left boat racing to try
his hand at auto racing with Toyota.
He even won a race in Portland. He
also drove a Porsche 962 at Daytona
with Team Seattle in their early years.
But Chip was lured back to the
sport by the late Bernie Little, owner
of the Miss Budweiser Team, in 1992.
He was immediately back to his winning
ways, recording another Gold Cup win
and setting the all-time record of seven
race wins in one season. In 1993 he
won yet another Gold Cup and World
Championship.
Chip Hanauer’s presentation to
us will be titled, “Lessons from a
Dangerous Life.” Chip suffered many
serious injuries from crashes while
racing hydroplanes. He often drove
with great pain and always knew he
was in a potentially dangerous situation
while in the boat.
Chip retired with 61 unlimited victories, one short of the all-time record
holder, Bill Muncey, who had 62.
Chip has a degree from WSU in
Special Education. He now spends time
helping emotionally handicapped kids.
He also does work for a number of
charities that are important to him.
Chip does a lot of corporate speaking
engagements, working on motivation
and teamwork.
In a world of self-absorbed athletes,
Chip Hanauer has always made time
for his fans and for those less fortunate.
Come to our 2009 Annual Banquet and
Auction and meet this hometown hero.
November/December 2008
MOTOR SPORTS
Our 2008 motorsports year
has come to a close. Our last
event was September 25 and
it was another success. Both
the Car Control Clinic and
the High Performance Driving School were full or close
to full. We had a fun and successful year.
So now it is time for the
folks that put these track
events together to work on
some winter projects so that
our 2009 events are better
than ever. Here is a sneak
peek at some of the things
we will be working on.
The Car Control Clinics at
Pacific Raceway have been
a big hit. We will continue to
hold these concurrently with
every High Performance
Driving School at PR. There
are no plans to return to
Bremerton Raceway in 2009.
Participants were particularly
thrilled by the chance to drive
the big track at slow speed.
This provided a preview of
the next step up the ladder
of high performance driving.
Several Club members took
advantage and moved up.
We are working on finetuning the Car Control Clinic
events are budgeted to break
even over the year. All costs
are rising. They include track
rental, insurance, tow trucks,
EMTs, food, homeland
security, September 11, etc.
Just kidding about the last
two but they seem like handy
excuses for most anything.
While prices for our favorite sport continue to rise,
curriculum to make it even
more satisfying for participants. People were very
happy this year but there is
room for improvement.
We started using online
registration this year with
MotorsportsReg.com. We will
be evaluating this over the
winter but it looks like we’ll
continue to use it.
We are offering reciprocal
rights to the Puget Sound
Mini Club. This allows their
members to participate in our
Club events. Over the winter,
we’ll be doing a ground school
of some sort for the Mini
owners to encourage their
participation. We already
have a lot of dual members
and typically have eight to
ten Minis at our track events.
We would like to try and
have a remote event in 2009
but getting track dates is a
challenge. We are trying, so
we’ll see.
Prices for all driving
events will be higher next
year. Sorry, but isn’t this the
way of the world? Expect
Car Control Clinics to be
$125 and High Performance
Driving days to be $250. These
I’m just happy we can still do
this. There may come a day
when costs, liability, track
availability and other factors
preclude track events. So in
the meantime, let’s continue
to enjoy our BMWs in the
manner that Munich intended.
At speed!

BMW CCA Puget Sound Region
Winner of the 2008 ZF Public Service Award
It was recently announced that our
chapter of the BMW CAA is the proud
winner of the $2,000 ZF Public Service
Award for our donations to various
agencies throughout our community.
ZF Friedrichshafen AG is a leading
worldwide automotive supplier for
driveline and chassis technology, located
in twenty-five countries. The ZF Public
Service Awards are sponsored by one of
ZF’s U.S. facilities, ZF Sales and Service,
North America located in Vernon Hills,
Illinois. This forward-looking company
is working to be a catalyst for service
and community support throughout the
United States and has chosen to support
BMW CAA chapters that are working
to make their community better. The
Puget Sound Region donated just over
$23,400 in 2007 which qualifies us to be
considered the number one most-giving
chapter in the nation!
The agencies we supported through 2007 are as follows:
• The beneficiary of the annual dinner
and auction, The Medic One Foundation, to fund training for first responders.
• Turn workers donated their time at
driving schools to secure funding for
the Team Seattle Guild at Seattles
Children’s Hospital for the Kami R.
Sutton Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
• The summer Concours at Renton’s
Cedar River Park inspires us to give
to the Renton Lions Club for their
commitment to youth activities.
• The XXX Drive-In in Issaquah is the
venue for our extremely successful
E30 Picnic, so we give funding to Life
Enrichment Options in their community to focus on helping the developmentally disabled with housing,
employment, and recreation.
• SOVREN Guild at Seattles Children’s
Hospital receives funding for uncompensated care through our participation in the Car Corral at the Historic
Races fourth of July weekend.
And as an added bonus, BMW CCA
Public Service Award matches the donations made by all chapters nationwide.
This year the donation was approximately eighteen percent. That equates
to another $4,200 given to the agencies
listed above.
The Puget Sound Board of Directors
would like to thank our membership
for giving their valuable time to help
organize and participate in events that
provide ways to give back to our neighbors. Your generous donations of dollars
at the auction and for registration at
events give us the means to make a
difference and change lives.

Board Nominations
PATRICK MILLER
OMNI
The Nominations C ommittee had an easy time of it this
year. We have filled all the board positions with a full slate of
candidates for the 2009 Board of Directors. We had a volunteer for president, sometimes a tough slot to fill, and we even
have a few new board members for next year! Since none of
the positions is contested, we do not need a ballot.
If a full board position sounds like too much time commitment, there are other ways to get involved in the Club activities. You can contact a board member for additional information. Remember, all of our events are made possible through
the efforts of volunteers.

Twenty- eight BMWs and fifty hardy
Club members gathered on a very soggy
October weekend for our third overnight tour to Hood River. The last time
we did this trip (2006) we were happy
that our lunch spot provided shade from
the sun. This time, just when you thought
it couldn’t rain any harder, it did!
I usually take a poll at the driver’s
meetings, asking how many members
have participated in one of our Driving
Schools. I was pleasantly surprised to
see that almost everyone had. The skills
learned at those events were certainly
put to good use on this drive. Forest
Road 25 near Mt. St. Helens can be
tricky in the best of conditions. On this
day, in addition to the curves, elevation
changes and bumps, we faced pouring
rain, and sections covered with leaves.
We did our best to set a pace appropriate
for the conditions. I’m happy to report
that we all made it out the other side.
The hard rain waited until we
reached Hood River and were just
about to set foot on the 1.2 mile walk
toward Hopsfest, the Heavens opened.
Gore-Tex was donned, a Northwest
spirit adopted, great seasonal beers
were sampled, and a good time was had,
regardless. Other members chose to
continue driving, exploring the twisty
roads and the Columbia River overlook
near Mosier.
We split into several smaller groups
for dinner, and I heard many reports of
good food and great times. That’s really
the best part of tours for me—getting
to socialize with old friends and make
new ones.
Sunday morning provided marginally
better conditions. I led a small group
back over an early snow dusted Chinook Pass. Others chose to hang around
town for more exploring, while some
were headed further east to do a little
wine tasting on the way home.
Laurie and I had a great time in spite
of the conditions, and we’re looking
forward to visiting this great little town
again next fall.

Garth Stein Meeting
December 7
E36 Tech Session and
Garage Sale at M-Cars
O ur meeting with Garth
Stein, author of The Art of
Racing in the Rain was one
of the best events I’ve ever
attended. Garth’s presentation was terrific. We had
about forty members, and a
few “non-members” attend
and learn more about the
book’s creation. It has now
been translated into twentyfive languages and there is
even a movie deal in the
works. Ross Bentley, famous
racing coach and author, is
mentioned in the book and
was in the audience with his
wife, Robin. All in all, a great
way to spend a rainy fall
Saturday morning. If you
missed our October 4 reading, please visit Garth’s website at www.GarthStein.com,
for future presentations.

General maintenance will be discussed with
some ‘hands on’ demonstrations of the basics. Air
filters-to-brake pads are on the list of items to maintain . . . and as always Fluids! Fluids! Fluids!
Also, same day/same time, will be an E36 Garage
Sale. Bring your clean re-usable E36 stock or aftermarket ‘don’t wants’ and ‘sell-n-swap’ with fellow
E36 enthusiasts!
Tech Session will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday
December 7 with Sell-n-Swap activities to be conducted during the 11:30-12:30 break. Please plan on
arriving around 9:30 to place your items for sale—vbb
listing to appear as date approaches. Post your items
for sale ahead of time within the vbb thread “E36 Tech

The PRO3 Line
You cannot write better fiction than
this. It’s like some kind of cheesy ‘B’
movie from the 1980s where the two stars
come together in the last fifteen minutes
of the movie competing in some highprofile, winner-take-all sporting event
where the big trophy is on the line as
well as the heart of the popular girl. Yes,
you know the one I’m talking about!
The 2008 PRO3 regular season
points championship came to a very
dramatic close at Pacific Raceways on
September 25. Jeff Van Lierop in the
Country Green machine, and the 2007
PRO3 points champ, had been doing
battle with Andrew Newell of Team
Strictly BMW Racing all season long.
And I mean ALL SEASON LONG,
twelve races total; ten race weekends all
over the Northwest. These two drivers
went nose to tail in nearly every race.
Each one sharing as many pole positions
as first place finishes. In some races,
one would earn the pole, but the other
would snag first place at the checkered.
It was that close.
How close? Too close to make up.
Like I said, you can’t write better fiction. Going into the weekend, Jeff had
earned 223 points to Andrew’s 221
points. Two lousy points separated the
leaders after eleven races. The finishing
schemes started whirring through the
paddock like back-chatter at a cocktail
party; who had to finish where in the
line-up to win all the marbles. As if that
drama wasn’t enough, enter Caelin
Gabriel. Although fifth in the points at
the time, Caelin had proven his mettle
at Portland in August by not only taking
pole, but also the win. He could prove
to be the spoiler here, grabbing some
much-needed points from Andrew and
securing Jeff’s win. And what of Kevin
Doyle? He was chasing the top two all
season and was comfortably in third
place overall, but was certainly due
for the top spot on the podium. Would
he step up and be the spoiler? Oh, the
theories and speculation ran rampant
through the paddock that day!
To add to the drama, Sunday morning greeted us with a low-lying fog and
moisture on the roadways entering the
16

track. The paddock was split 50/50: was
the track fast and sticky this morning, or
was it wet and slick? Like a single-file
line of church parishioners, we slowly
made our way to track entrance through
pre-grid. Race officials warned of a wet
track. A PRO3 train took off with the
green flag and was greeted with…a very
dry, very FAST track! Personal best
times throughout the PRO3 grid were
improved by one or two full seconds.
Even more amazing was the final
result of combined qualifying; but I’m
November/December 2008
going to make you wait, like we did.
First of all, Timing and Scoring had been
working around communication issues
all weekend and so the times were slow
to come out of Driver Services. Then,
once the qualifying results finally came
out, it was quickly determined that there
was something wrong. Some times were
correct, others were not. Drivers and
crew that knew they had faster times
were not recorded! Holy cow! Not this
weekend, of all weekends! Not with
the PRO3 championship separated by
Jeff the 2008 PRO3 champ.
Kevin Doyle who finished third.
Andrew Newell who finished second in
points.
two points! This cannot be! Protests
were thrown and voices were heard; oh,
the humanity! Apparently, the Saturday practice had been combined with
Saturday qualifying rather than combined with Sunday qualifying – so much
needed fast laps were not included in
the combined grid sheet. The proper
grid was quickly sorted out as a result.
The result? Andrew bettered Jeff’s
fastest lap by the thinnest of margins:
.004 seconds. No other pole all season
was this close. Andrew had, just like
that, in four thousandths of a second,
TIED the series championship. Never
before in PRO3 has there been a tie
going into the final race for first place.
What are the odds? Staggering, even to
the likes of Jimmy the Greek!
The gritty anticipation suddenly
settled in and all attention was on
PRO3. The mandatory driver’s meeting brought it to the attention of those
outside of Group 1 that, yes, there was
a points tie for first place. To add to
the spectacle at the meeting, the two
competitors were asked to stand up and
identify their cars. They happened to be
seated next to each other; true gentlemen racers for sure!
It was a clean race with few yellow
flags (no full-course yellows!) no black
flags, just good, tight racing. Jeff managed to hold off competition during the
race and took the checkered for the
win. A hearty “Congratulations!” goes
out to Jeff, Andrew, and Kevin for their
performances this year. ICSCC awards
trophies to fifth place due to the size of
our class, so to round out the podium,
Caelin snagged fourth place with yours
truly in fifth.
Overall, it was a very good season for
PRO3. We grew our numbers to all-time
highs with the racing entries to prove it.
For 2008 we had 211 starts versus 143 in
2007. Our largest grid was 28 PRO3 cars
at Seattle in August.
Our sponsors contributed nearly
$10,000 to our efforts, and certainly
are deserving of special recognition.
Speedware Motorsports in Redmond
and Griot’s Garage in Fife generously
donated multiple gift certificates for
the Seattle races. Car Quest donated
merchandise, and Toyo Tires, (our title
sponsor) donated Toyo Bucks in various
amounts determined by the number of
cars in the starting grid.
Westwerks Automotive in Redmond
sponsored the Westwerks Challenge at
Pacific Raceways for PRO3. The top
three points earners of the combined
Seattle races earned cold hard cash!
Congrats to Jeff Van Lierop, Andrew
Newell, and Kevin Doyle!
A quick reminder: the 2009 PRO3
Calendar will be published again this
year. See Lance Richert’s article elsewhere in this issue for details.
I’ll see you at the virtual track…until
next year.

I Always Thought They Should
Last Longer Though . . .
I generally don’t read articles
about tires; I find them dull and unengaging. So if you’re the same way,
read on because I’m not going to bore
you to death with data and test results.
I would just like to convey some real
life experience in hopes that you don’t
make the same mistakes.
I have owned two sets of Michelin
MXV4s over the years and both times
the experience was pleasant. I enjoyed
the ride comfort, the ride quality, the
ability to sustain spirited driving and
the overall performance of the tire. A
couple years ago I needed a set of tires
for my 740iL and decided to look into
the tire market a little deeper before
throwing another set of MXV4s on the
old Bimmer.
Now as I said, I have no real grievance with the MXV4s except I think
they should last a bit longer, so I started
researching the tire market for the best
rated tire. The Bridgestone Turanza
keeps coming up, so I look into it a little
further. I like what I am hearing from
the review segment and the manufacture’s test reviews look good as well. I
find the closest Bridgestone Dealer and
kick the tires a little. It’s a good looking
tire with good reviews and a sound warranty, so I pull the trigger.
About a year later I start noticing a
little vibration in the front end, a little
shimmy in the steering wheel and a disquieting feeling in my BMW consciousness. As I have mentioned before I have
an E28. The only thing that has plagued
it over and over (aside from warped
front rotors) is a recurring front end
shimmy requiring control arm bushing
replacement. At this point I am not even
considering a tire issue; I am thinking
this has to be a budding front end issue.
Now I must point out that if you were to
look in Mr. Webster’s dictionary under
“Anal Retentive” you’ll most likely find
a picture of me.
18
ZüNDFOLGE
Anyway, if I had a dollar for every
minute I have spent at tire stores
waiting for my wheels to be balanced,
I could retire-which in this market is
saying something. Now remember I am
a bit imbalanced when it comes to tire
balancing. I can’t stand any shimmy in
the car what so ever, so driving an E28
is akin to putting a man in a round room
and asking him to stand in the corner.
Not that BMWs are intrinsically shaky,
just the opposite; they are inherently
smooth so any shake is exaggerated.
So I went to the local BMW dealer
and had the tires balanced. They told
me that one tire on the front had lost
a weight. After I left it felt much better,
but not perfect. So I went again; then
a couple of months later I went again.
I put up with what I thought was an
imperfect wheel for about another
year until I could no longer stand the
shakiness.
On a recent trip to Seattle I pulled
into a Les Schwab store and asked
yet another tire dealer to balance my
wheels. After waiting a little bit (and
enjoying some popcorn along with a
turn at the wheel simulator computer)
a guy asked me to come out to the shop.
Now I have spent a fair amount of time
in this situation: he is going to show me
something awful, I’m supposed to shriek
and agree to have everything under my
car replaced. This is not my first rodeo.
November/December 2008
Now I must point out that
if you were to look in Mr.
Webster’s dictionary under
“Anal Retentive” you’ll most
likely find a picture of me.
Actually this time he had something
horrifying to show me.My tires were
cupped, warped, out of round, you name
it, they were anything but in a circle. As
I said, I have had my wheels incessantly
balanced but I have never had them
rotated. I have never been good at getting my tires rotated. I will spend hours
eating popcorn waiting to get my wheels
balanced but not rotated, I don’t have
time for that.
So what have I learned so far? Apparently some tires actually need to be
rotated, and not all tires are created
equal. Not all shimmies are due to bent
wheels or bad front-end bits. There is
one thing to be said for the MXV4s
though; I treated them the same exact
way, never rotated them, drove them
like I stole’em and never had this issue.
I always thought they should last longer
though.
