Cabot Trail - Nova Scotia
Cabot Trail
Skyline Trail

Hike, golf and dance the Highlands.
“I
have travelled the globe. I have seen the Canadian and
American Rockies, the Andes and the Alps and the highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton
outrivals them all.”
—Alexander Graham Bell
The natural beauty of the highlands provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities such as golfing, kayaking, hiking,
cycling, fishing, birdwatching, skiing, and snowmobiling. And
don’t forget motorcycling! The Cabot Trail was featured in USA
Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice for Best Motorcycle Trip in 2014.
Cabot Trail
Golfers will never forget a day at the Stanley Thompsondesigned Highlands Links, consistently ranked as one of the
ten best golf courses in Canada. For a different perspective,
take a guided kayak tour along the highlands of Northern
Cape Breton. One of the most spectacular paddling destinations in North America, this remote and rugged coast offers
imposing cliffs of ancient bedrock, which feature waterfalls,
sea caves, and towering arches (see page 342).
Some of the best hiking opportunities in Nova Scotia are found
in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with 26 trails for
all interests and abilities. For a truly spectacular sunset view,
take part in the Skyline Sunset Hike. This guided hike leads you
to the top of a mountain headland, overlooking the ocean as
the sun slowly dips into the horizon. The Cabot Trail’s natural
beauty is only outdone by the area’s unique culture and unrivalled hospitality, which will certainly leave a lasting impression
on you. You’ll feel like a local after attending a ceilidh and hearing some of Cape Breton’s finest musicians. Be sure to wear
your dancing shoes, because you’ll be up learning how to step
or square dance with new friends in no time. By the end of your
stay, you may even know a few words of Gaelic.

Plan to spend at least three days along the Cabot Trail, where you’ll
discover how Nova Scotia, or “New Scotland,” got its name.

Capture a Moment
Carved into mountains that rise high above the shimmering waters of the Gulf of St.
Lawrence, the Cabot Trail is a photographer’s dream.
Cabot Trail Viewpoints
Eagles
Twenty-four viewpoints are scattered
along the trail, giving visitors ample
opportunities to pull safely off the road
to take pictures, observe wildlife, or
learn about a special aspect of the Cape
Breton Highlands National Park. In particular, the look-offs at French, North, and
MacKenzie mountains offer unforgettable vistas of the rugged coastline, fishing
boats in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and
purple-hued Cape Smokey.
View eagles all along the Margaree River
system, especially the Southwest Branch
in and near Lake Ainslie and the section
from Margaree Forks to the Margaree
Harbour bridge.
Meat Cove
Cabot Trail
A trip to northern Cape Breton is not
complete without making the journey
out to Meat Cove. This small, remote
community tucked into the mountains is
the most northern point in Nova Scotia.
The sheer slate cliffs sloping into the
ocean and “edge of the world” feeling
you’ll get by travelling this road can only
be topped by seeing this dramatic coast
from the water. The challenging nature
of this environment is only suited for experienced paddlers and a guided tour is
recommended. See page 342 for a listing of
tour operators.
Moose
Moose are often seen grazing in the quiet
shallows of lakes and streams in this col
ourful tapestry of woodland, tundra, and
bogs. The best time to spot them is just
before dusk. If you see moose approaching the roadway, be cautious—use your
camera’s zoom feature and enjoy these
magnificent creatures from a safe distance.
Atlantic Puffin
These cute and stocky sea birds summer
in large colonies on coastal cliffs and
rocky offshore islands before making their
way south in the fall. Due to the remoteness of their nesting areas, a boat tour to
sites like the Bird Islands—Hertford and
Ciboux—is the best way to view them.
Donelda’s Bird Island Puffin Tours in
Englishtown would be happy to welcome
you aboard (see page 339).
Meat Cove
All-Weather Fun
If you’d like to take shelter from the great outdoors, head inside to one of these attractions.
Margaree Salmon Museum, North East Margaree
Centre de la Mi-Carême, Chéticamp
Learn about the history of salmon angling on the Margaree
River in this former schoolhouse that houses an excellent
collection of photographs and memorabilia (see page 265).
The Mi-Carême fête has been celebrated by
local Acadian communities for centuries. Try your
hand at the centuries-old crafts of mask-making or
rug-hooking (see page 265).

View a variety of exhibits focusing on the life and
activities of the area’s early settlers, including life on the
ocean, mining, boatbuilding, weaving, ropemaking,
and blacksmithing (see page 265).
Keltic Lodge Resort & Spa, Ingonish Beach
Relax and indulge in a full-body seaweed wrap,
aromatherapy massage, and luxurious mani-pedi after
your yoga class at the spa. Perched high on a cliff nearly
surrounded by the Atlantic, this stately resort has been
a summertime haven for well-heeled vacationers
since 1940 (see page 262).

Outdoor Adventures
The Cabot Trail is a nature lover’s paradise, so get out and enjoy all it has to offer for explorers of
every fitness level. Turn to page 268 for a complete listing of Cabot Trail’s outdoor adventures.
Salmon fishing on the Margaree River
Kayaking off Northern Cape Breton
For generations, anglers have been lured to the
Margaree’s tumbling rapids, deep pools, and still
marshes. This popularity has attracted the TV show
The New Fly Fisher, which included the Margaree
River as its first Nova Scotia location. One of the fishing guides who can help visitors try their luck is at
Margaree Riverview Inn. Located in Margaree Forks,
this property is located within 10 minutes of some of
the island’s best salmon pools (see pages 259 & 268).
One of the most spectacular paddling destinations in
North America, this remote and rugged coast offers
imposing cliffs of ancient bedrock, featuring waterfalls, sea caves, unique rock formations, and the occasional whale passerby. The challenging nature of this
environment is only suited for experienced paddlers
and a guided tour is recommended (see page 342 for
a list of tour operators).
Whalewatching
Pods of Atlantic pilot whales
spend their summers gorging on squid just off the
shores of Pleasant Bay and
Chéticamp. Book a zodiac
tour to get up close and
personal with these highly
social sea creatures, which
are likely to be as intrigued
by you as you are by them.
Along with many species of
whales, chances are you’ll
see porpoises, seals and seabirds while out on the open
water. The best times to see
whales are in the summer
and fall months.

and head to Cabots Landing Provincial Park. This
National Historic Site commemorates the landfall of
John Cabot in 1497. It is also a popular rest stop for
kayakers, hikers, and cyclists travelling the mountainous northern coast. If warmer water is what you seek,
the barachois (freshwater/saltwater lake) at Ingonish
Beach is sure to please. For some fun in the waves,
grab your boogie board and head to Black Brook
