February 2016
Notes from the Executive Director… by Annwen Loverin
Welcome to our February newsletter! Hopefully, we haven’t all abandoned our New Year’s
resolutions by now, especially those really important resolutions about staying active and connected
in 2016. With more than 70 programs and services, Silver Harbour aims to support local seniors in
their desire to stay fit, both physically and mentally, and get the most out of life. We hope you’ll find
something that piques your interest – our schedule of programs in inside the back cover of this
newsletter and a full description of all the programs is available at the front desk in our Winter
Program Guide or on our website at www.silverharbourcentre.com.
To help you stay informed, if you’d like to receive our newsletter by email, please send a message to
[email protected] or simply tell the front desk. You can
also stay connected with Silver Harbour on Facebook (Silver Harbour
Seniors’ Activity Centre) and on Twitter (@SilverHarbourC). That’s
where we provide updates on upcoming events, share interesting
information, and post photos of our great people and programs.
I’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Linda, our
Arts and Crafts Coordinator, who retired in January. For more than 20
years, Linda developed and implemented a wide variety of arts, crafts,
computer, and language programs, building a great team of volunteers
to support these activities. We will certainly miss Linda at Silver
Harbour and sincerely thank her for sharing her skills and expertise
with us over the years.
I would also like to thank Jackie Morris, who resigned from our Board of Directors in January, for her
many contributions to the governance and policy decisions of Silver Harbour over the years. Jackie
will continue to volunteer as the organizer of our legal clinic.

Take-Out Meals and the
Environment
For those Silver Harbour members who like to
take home their lunch, we would like to
request that you bring your own clean,
reusable containers for your meal. Small
changes like this can make a big difference to
the environment!
Income Tax Clinics
Silver Harbour will again be hosting free
income tax clinics for lower income seniors in
the months of March and April ($30,000 or less
per person and $40,000 or less per couple).
Specially trained volunteers can help you
complete your income tax and benefit return if
your income is low and your tax situation is
simple. Volunteers do not complete income
tax and benefit returns for past years,
deceased persons, bankrupt individuals, or
individuals who have capital gains or losses,
employment expenses, or business or rental
income and expenses. If you would like us to
assist in completing your income tax forms, we
are here to help.
MSP Premium Assistance
Recent news reports have highlighted the fact
that many low income seniors are not aware
that there is financial assistance available to
help pay for their MSP Premiums. In some
cases, it may even be applied retroactively.
Premium assistance is available for individuals
with annual income of $30,000 or less. The
application form is available online at:

ms/119fil.pdf

Important Information About Bus Trips
This information will be very helpful to anyone interested in joining our bus trips…
1. Please note that return times are approximate, as there is no way to predict traffic or other
possible timing issues which may arise. We recommend that you do not schedule any
appointments directly following the trip.
2. Please read the bus trip description carefully – we will make every effort to fully describe the
trip, including how much walking there is and whether you may bring your walker or
wheelchair.
3. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time of the trip. This allows us to leave at the time
listed.
4. Some drivers will appreciate a tip and others prefer not to be tipped. If you would like to tip
the driver, please bring a small amount of money for this purpose. If a driver accepts tips, it
is still your choice whether you want to give one or not.
5. Please remember that the driver will be making all safety-related decisions during the
trip. This will include whether windows may be opened, the level of indoor heating, where
the bus may stop, and other important decisions.
6. We do not offer refunds for bus trips unless the bus trip is full and we can resell your ticket to
a person on the waitlist. Trips cancelled by Silver Harbour will be refunded in full.
7. If a trip is full, please put your name on the waitlist. We will attempt to accommodate
substantial waitlists by creating second trips when possible and people on the waitlist will
have the first opportunity to buy tickets for the second trip.
8. If you are driving to Silver Harbour for your bus trip, please park on the street or in the parking
lot to the east of our building. Anyone may park in these areas for any length of time.
9. Please limit your use of scented products like hairsprays and perfumes when going on bus
trips. Some people can be very sensitive to these scents, especially in enclosed spaces. We
very much appreciate your consideration.
10. Enjoy your trip!

Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre
February 2016
Arts and Crafts Corner… by Linda Ramsden
Our winter program started just a few weeks ago and the Centre is buzzing with the return, after
holidays, of our members as well as many new members. There are still spaces in some of the classes
and groups so please do not hesitate to ask about any that may be of interest.
We extend a warm welcome to our latest instructor, Linda A. Linda has started a new beginner’s
Spanish group and brings with her much skill, experience and lots of enthusiasm. For those lucky
participants who signed up, it will, no doubt, be a great learning experience.
The craft volunteers have been working on treats to celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th. They
will be on sale in the main foyer, prior to that date. Please stop by to pick up a little gift for your
special someone while supporting the Centre with your purchase.
This month we will be doing a collaborative project with Idea Program students from Capilano
University. They will interviewing some of our members and seeking their advice for youth as part
of a communications project. I am sure that it will prove to be enlightening and enriching experience
for all involved. More information on any subsequent displays will be provided once the project is
complete.
We will have a stunning Irish themed quilt on raffle starting this month with a draw date of March
14th at our St. Patrick’s tea. Passion for the work and expertise are always evident in our raffle and
sale quilts and this one is no exception. The Celtic knots that embellish the quilt have all been hand
embroidered and it is sure to be a treasure for the fortunate winner. Don’t forget to pick up a ticket!
March Workshop
Ukrainian Easter Eggs
What could be more appropriate with Easter just around the corner? No
experience is needed and each participant will decorate and dye their own
egg using traditional tools and techniques while learning about this
fascinating folk art. This workshop is a ton of fun and is becoming part of our
own Silver Harbour traditions.
1 session, Wednesday, March 3rd
10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Instructor: Terry P.
Cost: $10

What Love Means.....
They say that wisdom comes with age. But is it possible that real wisdom starts much younger? Look
at the responses from these 4-8 year olds who were asked ““What does love mean?”....
• ‘When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore.
So my grandpa does it for her, even when his hands got arthritis. That’s love.’
- Rebecca (age 8)
• ‘When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your
name is safe in their mouth.’
- Billy (age 4)
• ‘Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving stuff and they go out and smell
each other.’
- Karl (age 5)
• ‘Love is what makes you smile when you are tired.’
- Terri (age 4)
• ‘Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing you still want to be
together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they
kiss.”
- Emily (age 8)
• ‘Love is what is in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and just listen!’
- Bobby (age 7)
• ‘Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.’
- Mary Ann (age 4)
• ‘When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you!’
- Karen (age 6)
• ‘You really shouldn’t say “I love you” if you don’t mean it. But if you mean it you should say it
a lot. People forget!’
- Jessica (age 8)
• Perhaps the wisest was a four year old whose elderly next door neighbour had recently lost
his wife. Seeing the man cry, the little boy climbed onto his lap and just sat there. When his
mother asked the little boy what he had said to his neighbour the boy said ‘Nothing. I just
helped him cry.’
