MEET THE ARTISTS
John Kilkenny enjoys a multifaceted career that includes work as a performer, conductor,
educator, and arts administrator. Currently, John is Director of Percussion Studies and
Conductor of the Symphonic Winds at George Mason University. He also coordinates
and oversees recruitment efforts and initiatives for Mason’s School of Music, and is the
Artistic Director of the Mason Percussion Group. Under his direction, the group has
toured the Pacific Northwest to perform at the Western International Band Conference
and has enjoyed featured appearances at the Virginia Music Educators Conference,
College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Conference, and The John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts. The Mason Percussion Group recently performed and presented clinics
at the National Conservatory in San José, Costa Rica.
As a performer, John has been hailed by The Washington Post as a “Particularly fine
timpanist,” and enjoys a career that includes orchestral performances with the Washington
National Opera, Washington Ballet, Washington Concert Opera, Cathedral Choral
Society, National Symphony Orchestra, Washington Chorus, Choral Arts Society, and
virtually every other Washington, D.C., area performing arts organization. A champion
of contemporary music and an active chamber music performer, he collaborates regularly
with the Folger Consort, Washington Bach Consort, The Verge Ensemble, 21st Century
Consort, and the National Gallery New Music Ensemble. He has commissioned and
premiered numerous works over his career by composers as diverse as Peter Erskine, Don
McCullough, and Alenjandro Vinao. Michael Daugherty’s UFO percussion concerto for
solo percussion and orchestra and Raise the Roof concerto for timpani and orchestra,
and the Philip Glass Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra are among his
recent concerto appearances.
During the summer months, John serves as Artist-in-Residence at the Sewanee Summer
Music Festival and the Music for All Summer Symposium. From 2005 to 2007, John was

Workshop, and served in a similar capacity for the Indiana University Percussion
Academy from 2008 to 2010. Recently, he founded and serves as the Director of the
George Mason Summer Percussion Academy, which serves as the only comprehensive
summer percussion training academy in the region. The Academy offers students daily
hands-on performance opportunities in concert, chamber, solo, drumset, Afro-Cuban,
and marching percussion, along with steel pan ensemble and classes in college audition
prep and career development.
Sought after as a clinician and guest conductor, he has appeared at the Juilliard Summer
Percussion Academy, John Philip Sousa Foundation National High School Honor Band,
the Western International Band Conference, the Virginia Music Educators Conference,
The Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival, and at numerous universities and Days
of Percussion throughout the country. John is a Yamaha Performing Artist and proudly

Mark Camphouse A product of the rich cultural life of Chicago, composer-conductor
Mark Camphouse was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1954. He received undergraduate and
graduate degrees in music from Northwestern University, where he studied composition
with Alan Stout, conducting with John P. Paynter, and trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz.
A scholarship from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago enabled Camphouse to study trumpet
privately for two years with the late, legendary Chicago Symphony Principal Trumpet
Emeritus, Adolph Herseth.
Mr. Camphouse began composing at an early age, with the Colorado Philharmonic
premiering his First Symphony when he was 17. His 30 published works for wind band
have received widespread critical acclaim and are performed frequently in the U.S. and
abroad, in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Orchestra Hall
(Chicago), Royal Albert Hall (London), and at conferences of the World Association for
Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, National
Association for Music Education, American Bandmasters Association, Texas Bandmasters
Association, and the Midwest Clinic. Principal commissions include those by the William D.
Revelli Foundation, The U.S. Army Band, The U.S. Marine Band, Northshore Concert Band,
and some of America’s finest high school, college and university, and community bands.
Mr. Camphouse has served as guest conductor, lecturer, and clinician in 43 states, and in
Canada, Europe, and China. He was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters
Association in 1999 and has served as founding coordinator of the National Band
Association Young Composer Mentor Project since 2000. He conceived and edited the
unique four-volume book series for GIA Publications Composers on Composing for Band.
His fifth book with GIA Publications, Whatsoever Things … The Life and Teachings of
John P. Paynter, was published in 2014.
The 2015-2016 academic year marks Camphouse’s 38th year of full-time teaching in
higher education. In 2006, Professor Camphouse joined the faculty of George Mason
University, where he serves as conductor of the Wind Symphony and teaches courses
in composition and conducting. Other principal artistic, teaching, and administrative
positions have included serving as Music Director and Conductor of the New Mexico
Music Festival at Taos Symphony Orchestra, Associate Director and Music Division Head
of the Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts, Acting Dean of Music at New World School
for the Arts, and Interim Director of the George Mason University School of Music.
Professor Camphouse attained regional finalist status in the prestigious White House
Fellowship Competition in 1992. In 2002, he received an Outstanding Faculty Award
sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, the Commonwealth’s
highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s college and universities, for demonstrated excellence
in teaching, research, and public service. In 2011, Camphouse received the Kappa Kappa
Psi Distinguished Service to Music Award in recognition of and appreciation for valuable
contributions to the growth and development of the modern college/university band in the
field of composition. This December, he and Mason School of Music Professor Anthony
Maiello will receive awards for their achievements in composition and conducting from
Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity during the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
Mark has been married to Elizabeth Ann Curtis (Director of Mason’s Potomac Arts
Academy) since 1982. They have twin daughters, Beth and Briton.
Lisa C. Eckstein is in her fourth year of teaching music full-time at Northern Virginia
Community College (NOVA) on the Alexandria campus. She directs the NOVA
Alexandria Band, which is a college and community concert band of 70 members. She

High Schools from 2002 to 2012. Under her leadership, Manassas Park school bands
achieved Superior ratings at local and regional music competitions, performed at
Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, and marched in The National Cherry Blossom
Festival Parade in Washington, D.C. Under her direction in 2008, Manassas Park High
School received a Blue Ribbon Award from the Virginia Music Educators Association. In 2011, Ms. Eckstein received a Virginia Governor’s School Certificate of Appreciation
for Exemplary Service and Dedication to Education. She holds Music Education
degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and Temple University in

currently a sophomore at George Mason University, where he performs with the Wind
Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, and other chamber groups. Chandler began composing at the
age of 13, and published his first concert band piece, Beyond the Clouds, at age 14 with
LudwigMasters Publications. Since then, he has gone on to publish two more works with
LudwigMasters, and has written and premiered numerous pieces for concert band, jazz
ensemble, brass quintet, and trombone choir during his high school and college years.
Although he is primarily a trombonist, Chandler also plays trumpet, euphonium, piano,
and guitar, and intends to graduate from George Mason University in 2018 with a B.S.
in Mechanical Engineering.
PROGRAM NOTES
The Liberty Bell March
John Philip Sousa
Another iconic march by Sousa, The Liberty Bell was originally part of the unfinished
operetta The Devil’s Deputy. It remained unpublished and unnamed until Sousa and band
manager, George Hinton, were inspired by a spectacle titled “America” that featured a
huge painting of the Liberty Bell. This march has remained famous through parades and
presidential inaugurations and as the theme song to Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
Salvation is Created
Pavel Tchesnokoff
Pavel Tchesnokoff was a Russian composer, conductor, and teacher of choral music. He
was well known and praised for his choral conducting, and he wrote 500 choral works
in his lifetime. Before the Soviet Union forced Tchesnokoff towards the secular arts, he
wrote Salvation is Created as one of his last sacred choral works. The English translation
of the text is “Salvation is created, in the midst of the earth, O God, O our God. Alleluia.”
Years after his death communism fell, the Russian Orthodox Church opened its doors
again, and Salvation is Created became the unofficial church anthem.
In Memoriam
Mark Camphouse
George Mason University’s very own Mark Camphouse composed In Memoriam in 2002
based on Salvation is Created. It was commissioned by the Revelli Foundation in memory
of long-time Bands of America friend and colleague, L. J. Hancock, who was Director of
Bands at Norwin High School in North Huntington, Pennsylvania. The piece premiered
June 29, 2002, at Illinois State University by the Bands of America Summer Symposium
Director’s Band.
Nitro
Frank Ticheli
Educated at the University of Michigan, composer Frank Ticheli has written several
notable works that have become standards in new wind band repertoire. Since 1991, he
has been a Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California and, until
1998, Composer in Residence of the Pacific Symphony. Ticheli provides his own program
notes for Nitro:
“Nitro, an energy-charged three-minute fanfare for band, was commissioned by the
Northshore Concert Band, Mallory Thompson, Music Director, in celebration of their 50th
anniversary season, and received its premiere performance by them on April 9, 2006.
“Nitrogen is the most abundant component of the Earth’s atmosphere (78 percent by
volume), and is present in the tissues of every living thing. It is the fifth most abundant
element in the universe, created by the fusion deep within stars; it has recently been
detected in interstellar space. The sheer prevalence of nitrogen in all of nature, and the
infinite range of compounds it is part of — life-giving, energizing, healing, cleansing,
explosive — all appealed to me, and served as the inspiration for my music.
“The main musical idea for Nitro is a powerful, angular theme, first announced by the
trombones and horns, and then imitated in the trumpets. Trumpet fanfare calls and a
busy and relentless chattering in the woodwinds enhance the bright, festive mood. The
middle section is based on a woodwind theme that is partly fanfare-like, partly dancelike. This contrasting theme is built from intervals occurring in the natural overtone series
(octave and twelfth), giving it an expansive, open-air quality. The main theme reappears,
growing in power and density all the while, building to a thunderous conclusion.”
Second Suite in F for Military Band
Gustav Holst, ed. F. Fennell
Gustav Holst wrote for concert band as a serious concert medium, not just an orchestra
without strings. He wrote his Second Suite two years after the First Suite for Military
Band with his unique concert band sound in mind. The suite uses English folk songs and
dance tunes throughout, opening with a Morris dance. The second movement features
the folk song “I’ll love my love” to tell the story of lovers separated by their parents. This
is followed by the “Song of the Blacksmith” with the percussive strikes of a hammer and
anvil. The final movement intertwines the “Dargason” dance music with the melody of
“Greensleeves” to conclude the piece.
Scenes from the Louvre
Norman Dello Joio
Norman Dello Joio was born in New York City to a family of Italian immigrants. He
studied organ and became a choir director and church organist by the age of 14. He
studied at Julliard and Yale and won several awards for his compositions, including an
Emmy for the original film score of The Louvre. This band composition was adapted
from the film score and commissioned by Baldwin-Wallace College Symphonic Band,
Kenneth Snapp, conductor. The movements represent the development of the museum
during the Renaissance, and Dello Joio uses themes by composers of the time period.
Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night
Elliot del Borgo
Born in Port Chester, New York, del Borgo was a composer and music educator at
Philadelphia public schools and the Crane School of Music. He wrote over 600 works,
including the closing ceremony music for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. For
this piece, del Borgo wrote “The Dylan Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle into That
Good Night was the motivation for this musical composition. While not a programmatic
depiction of the poem, the work attempts to recreate the essence of the poem in sound.
The opening motif, representative of the life force, permeates much of the work. An
Ivesian use of sound layers – in the form of polytonal hymns – calls to mind the struggles
and persistence of the human spirit and its refusal to ‘go gentle.’”
Four Scottish Dances
Malcolm Arnold, arr. J. P. Paynter
Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton, England, and served as the Principal Trumpet
with the London Symphony Orchestra. He devoted his career to composition and gained
a reputation for composing light music, film scores, and works for theatre, ballets, and
symphonies. He was knighted in 1993 for his service to music, having been hailed as one
of the major composers of the 20th century. He offers his own program note to Four
Scottish Dances:
“These dances were composed early in 1957, and are dedicated to the BBC Light Music
Festival. They are all based on original melodies but one, the melody of which was
composed by Robert Burns.
“The first dance is in the style of a slow strathspey, a slow Scottish dance in 4/4 meter,
with many dotted notes, frequently in the inverted arrangement of the “Scotch snap.” The
name was derived from the strath valley of [the River] Spey.
“The second, a lively reel, begins in the key of E-flat and rises a semi-tone each time it
is played until the bassoon plays it, at a greatly reduced speed, in the key of G. The final
statement of the dance is at the original speed in the home key of E-flat.
“The third dance is in the style of a Hebridean Song, and attempts to give an impression
of the sea and mountain scenery on a calm summer’s day in the Hebrides.
“The last dance is a lively fling, which makes a great deal of use of the open-string pitches
of the violin (saxophones in the band edition).”
Dawn of a Nation
Chandler Comer
Chandler Comer graduated from Westfield High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, in
2014 and is continuing his studies at George Mason University. He has composed several
professionally published pieces including Beyond the Clouds, Wind Power, and The
Labyrinth. Dawn of a Nation premiered in 2014 as a part of Comer’s final performance
at Westfield High School. The piece, in four movements, represents the early history of
the U.S. starting with Jamestown.
The Washington Post March
John Philip Sousa, ed. F. Fennell
The “March King” earned his title by writing over 100 marches in addition to his 12
operettas and six full operas. Sousa enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and
became the conductor of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band by age 26. In 1892,
he formed his own band that gained unprecedented popularity by touring all over the
world. The Washington Post March is the march that made Sousa famous, the march that
made the newspaper famous, and the march that made the two-step famous. Composed
in 1889 for the U.S. Marine Band to perform at a children’s essay contest on the grounds
of the Smithsonian, the march is thought to have been concocted to be the perfect music
for a new dance called the “two-step.” The trio melody contains a little melodic half
step dip-and-return that mirrors the sideways tilt used by the partners in the new dance.
The jaunty 6/8 march-time has echoes of the older waltz rhythm that was receding in
popularity and adds the peppiness and faster pace of the polka. The tune caught fire with
the dancers and sparked a worldwide dance craze.
