Miscellaneous By Linda Anderson YLER—Here are some suggestions to keep romance alive. Some of these are my ideas; others are from the Internet. Make your sweetheart’s favorite meal or take your sweetheart out for a special dinner. Send your valentine (male or female) flowers at work. If you are on a budget, give just one single hand-delivered flower. Do something unexpected. Maybe drive across town to take your valentine out to lunch. Embroider “I love you” on his pillowcase. Make up your own or buy a book of love poems you can read together. Dedicate a favorite song to your valentine on a radio show. If your sweetheart will be away from you on Valentine’s Day, get several cards and put them in different places in his or her luggage. Remember, it’s the thought, not the quantity. The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self-help support organization that offers friendship, understanding and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings. There is no religious affiliation, and there are no membership dues or fees. The secret of TCF’s success is simple: As seasoned grievers reach out to the newly bereaved, energy that has been directed inward begins to flow outward, and both are helped to heal. The vision of The Compassionate Friends is that everyone who needs us will find us and everyone who finds us will be helped. He is a 50 lb. muttfabulous doggie who was hit by a car and brought into the vet’s office. Most people would have just let him die, but some kind people found him and at least got him off the side of the road. He recovered very nicely and is still living at the vet in a kennel. We are trying to help Gus find a home and have fallen completely in love with him. He must have been on the road most of his life. He is about 3 years old. Someone must have treated him poorly because he is a little timid at first and cowers with quick movements. Every week we visit him and take him for a walk. He really loves to be loved on and has no problem searching your face for love with those big brown eyes. We pray for him every night. The other day he tested positive for heartworms. Still, we know that God saved him so that he could be a special friend to someone. We are accepting donations for Gus’s heartworm treatment. If everyone gives just a little bit, we can accomplish a lot all for the love of Gus. If you would like to help a little or a lot, send a check or money order made out to Misplaced Pets at Holly Lake Ranch. You may mail the donation to Misplaced Pets at Holly Lake Ranch, 1656 Greenbriar Trail, Holly Lake Ranch, TX 75765, or call 903-769-9542. Let’s work to save this little guy and find him a great home. Thanks for thinking of Gus. Hey, what are you doing on the couch all by yourself? You need me! My name is Holly. I am a 40 lb. lap dog looking for a large lap to sit on or by! I do not have any popcorn to bring, so you will have to let me eat some of yours, and please don’t forget the ice cream. I cannot eat chocolate, but vanilla is perfect for me. While we watch the movie, hopefully something like “All Dogs Go to Heaven.” You can pet me and I will give you lots of kisses. If you fall asleep, I will still be by your side when you wake up. You see, God saved me just for you. I was a stray and my sister was hit by a car. I really do hug with my paws. I’m not bragging, it’s just something that my heart taught me how to do. Can you ever imagine loving a dog forever? Well, I would like to make that possible for you. I am a very small black lab mix with a white blaze on my chest. See a photo of Holly at www.Petfinder.com. She always gets passed over in favor of a chocolate lab or a retriever frequently on her left and right. If you saw her you would love her. She enjoyed coming up on the porch and hanging out with the family, so she might eventually like to come in by the fire. What she does like to do is hang out at your house in your fenced-in yard and let you know if anyone is coming up the drive. It has taken an entire year for her to really warm up to people. She now lets almost everyone hug her and pet her. Her little ears are so cute. One is always up and the other always down. She has never liked the kennel or the leash and is free to wander about the fenced dog yard at her leisure. When she feels like it, she gets in her igloo. She is the first to bark if someone is coming up the drive. She has come so far with our group and would make a nice pet for someone who lived on a farm and could provide her with a warm house and lots of cream cheese! She kisses you for that. This is one Australian shepherd worth meeting. There is no one like her. See a photo of Lady Bug at www. Petfinder.com. He is a giant puppy almost a year old and sort of shy. Blue is mostly white with brown markings. It is hard to tell what breed he is. Blue might have a little St. Bernard in him or some sort of hound. He loves to play and likes all of the dogs at the kennels, so, if you know of any families looking for an additional dog, Blue would be the guy who loves to fit in. Sometimes people are looking for friends for their dogs so they won’t be lonesome. You can tell them about Blue. He is a big dog who needs a big hearted owner. Soldiers in Iraq study gemology online Continued from page 1 apply specifically to the jewelry industry. The program can be completed online or on campus. While taking her business courses in Iraq, Capt. Johnson was also learning how to grade diamonds through the institute’s Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma program. Suddenly she found herself the resident gem and jewelry expert in Iraq. “People in my squadron would ask me to examine gemstones and give jewelry recommendations,” she said. “I was teased about finding diamonds in the desert.” During her time in Iraq, Capt. Johnson’s unit lost 14 marines in combat, including in an intense battle against members of a radical militia group. “Losing these marines was very difficult for us,” she recalled. “And GIA was very flexible and supportive during hard times like that. Everybody was absolutely great, and that speaks highly of GIA’s staff.” In February 2004 Capt. Johnson finished a class called Diamond Grading and Colored Stone Grading to complete the practical lab extension portion of the G.G. diploma program. “I love being behind a microscope looking at gems,” she said, “and GIA has set up an excellent balance between book study and hands-on learning.” So what, exactly, is Capt. Johnson’s dream? “In a perfect world, I would be designing my own jewelry,” she says with a smile. She is planning to take the jewelrydesign class at the institute’s Carlsbad world headquarters once her military term ends. The program annually boasts award-winning designers. For more information about GIA’s education services, both online and on campus, call (800) 421-7250, extension 4001, or visit www.gia.edu or E-mail [email protected]. While serving with the 1st Marine Division in Korea in 1951, he wrote more than 200 pages of letters to his parents. The letters and pictures in this series were kept in a cardboard box (time capsule) until May 2005, when opened and viewed for the first time in decades. This series is based on these letters plus Mr. Myers’ personal recollections. Mr. Myers is a member of the East Texas chapter of the Korean War Veterans’ Association (KWVA), which welcomes Korea veterans who served from 1950 to the present and associate members who may be interested in supporting the KWVA. The UN high command immediately rejected such news out of hand with the standard statement that its policy was to “not comment on Communist propaganda broadcasts.” This was the beginning of a stalemate in the peace negotiations that would last for the next three years (until July 1954) By M.L. Myers OLLY LAKE RANCH— Things were looking up in late August and early September. We were safe. We were 250 miles south of the front lines. We felt like the war was over, and it was for us. Masan in summer was like being on R&R. The good news was that, for the first time in the war, representatives of the two sides had agreed to meet and talk about peace and an armistice. That was a defining moment. Even the English version of The Korea Times was upbeat and positive at the time. Heating up “Letter No. 29 Incoming “Letter No. 34 Outgoing “Saturday, 11 August 1951 “Masan, Korea “Dear Pater: “I got your letter but have been snowed under with reports and haven’t been able to answer. “Yes, I’ll agree with you, the world situation has been confusing. The feeling is that the 1st Marine Division is not here to stay—in Korea, that is. “Mother tells me she is keeping an album of the pictures I send home. It would nice to have after it’s all over. “It’s been rather warm here [with] the temperature hitting 120 during the middle of the day. “I went swimming for the second time today. It was fun, although I think I got too much sun. I took the rubber mattress and really had a great time. “The armored amphibian tractors take us out to a place around the island in the middle of the [Masan] Bay. “Jimmy.” H Farsighted statement The front-page headline of the Times on Aug. 21, 1951, stated optimistically, “U.N. HQS SAYS TRUCE IN SIGHT IF REDS SINCERE” (see the graphic on this page). This headline was a direct quote from Gen. Mathew B. Ridgway, commander in chief of UN forces in Far East, from his office in Tokyo. Virtually every article on page 1 of this day’s Korea Times newspaper had to do with some aspect of the war. Even though the tone was optimistic, there was at least one major hang-up between the parties involved. The Communist side insisted that the dividing line be the 38th parallel. The UN command was just as adamant that the dividing line be in the general area of the present battle line, which was somewhat north of the 38th parallel. (See last week’s map.) Communist piggly-wiggly This subhead in the newspaper seemed to leave some wiggle room: “Reds Say Line Can Be Adjusted.” Unfortunately, this acknowledg- Strange dichotomy, that Officially there was a cease-fire in effect so the parties could negotiate for peace, all the while soldiers on both side continuing to fight and die. Meanwhile, letters home from Cpl. Jimmy expressed his own frustration with the pace of the peace talks and rumors about plans for the 1st Marine Division. Just ducky Enlisted men were off Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday and could go out on the “ducks” (amphibious tractors) to where the water was clear and clean. There we would dive off and swim or take our air mattresses along and paddle around for about an hour. The harbor was considered too polluted to be safe for servicemen’s recreational activities although it didn’t stop Korean children from taking a dip (see photo 1). Masan harbor was originally designed for Korean fishing junks (boats) to tie up, load supplies and off-load their catches. Since the war, there was a market for used Letters from the forgotten war, Korea 1951 This article is Part 37 of a series Marv Myers 1 2 RETURN TO SENDER—Top: Korea Times newspaper looks to be laboriously hand-set one character at a time. On page 2 under the headline “No Korean Reply to Olympic Wire” appears a United Press article that begins: “Helsinki, Aug. 20—(UP)—Invitation to the Olympic Games of 1952 . . . was returned. Postal authorities reported the addresses could not be found.” No kidding. Photo 1: Here are what appear to be small Korean children swimming in Masan harbor under the watchful eye of momma-son and poppa-son. Ugh! Photo 2: Korean workers are bundling up metal artillery war materials such as discarded artillery shells. It made the harbor a filthy, contaminated area, off limits to all except workers involved, as evidenced by the strands of barbed wire (photo 2). The other side “Letter No. 37 “17 August 1951 “Masan, Korea “Dear Poppa-son. “Say, have you gotten the latest scoop stateside? I read in Newsweek that, if the peace talks come through, the 1st Marine Division may go to the Mediterranean. “As much as I would like to get home, that would make a nice trip and I’d really like to see the other side of the world, Paris or England. “The scuttlebutt is we would stay in Africa. “Jim.” In the next letter to my mom, I have already decided that the 1st Marine Division is definitely headed to the Mediterranean. It’s a good thing I did not re-up (reenlist) on the basis of that scuttlebutt. 3 casings to be exported for scrap value, probably in Japan. The barbed wire says “Stay out.” Photo 3: For a photo opportunity Cpl. Jimmy poses on one of the highest points at Camp Lopez overlooking beautiful Masan Bay. This large artillery shell cemented into a rock outcropping is one of the last vestiges of Japanese occupation in World War II. Photo 4: This picture shows the tree-lined camp with Masan Bay and mountains in the background from the vantage point of the Japanese monument in photo 4. [Newspaper, photos and commentary compliments of M.L Myers] “18-22 August 1951 “Masan, Korea “Dearest Mom— “I’m wondering if you sent my horn. If you send it, I hope you insure it for at least $70. “Here’s the latest scuttlebutt. We’re going to the Mediterranean. That was in Newsweek last week. I don’t care, just as long as I get out in November. “I picked up a Korea Times in town last night, so will enclose it with this letter (Korea Times newspaper dated Aug. 21, 1951). “There is not much new here, and I see quite a bit of work on my desk, so will cut this for now. “Jimmy.” Warp time My time in Korea now is streaming by at warp speed. The fact that I would be departing the Korean peninsula in a few weeks would not be revealed to me until just days before my departure (on Oct. 3, 1951). Getting leave from the base to wander into Masan city was be- 4 coming easier, but on weekends only for enlisted men. Officers, on the other hand, enjoyed the privilege (RHIP) of taking sojourns off base until around midnight. Next month, after I joined a dance-band combo, I would be allowed similar special privileges for authorized leave off base in accordance with my work with the band. The hearing was part of a series of public hearings the commission is holding across the state to gather input from Texans on how to modernize the tax structure and reduce property taxes. The public is invited to participate in all such hearings. Gov. Rick Perry created the 24member bipartisan commission in September. Former Texas comptroller John Sharp chairs it. Since the commission’s creation, the Texas Supreme Court has ruled the state’s current school property-tax structure unconstitutional and has given lawmakers until June 1 to devise a different tax system and lower school property taxes. The governor has outlined five key principles to guide the commission’s deliberations on tax reforms. Gov. Perry said the state’s new tax structure must be fair, broad-based, modern, understandable to taxpayers and competitive with other states “so that Texas can continue Gov. Rick Perry to attract jobs by maintaining the best business climate in America.” Future meetings of the commission are scheduled as follows: Monday, Feb. 13, 10 a.m., Abilene. Texas Tax Reform Commission to hold public hearing in Johnson Building (southcentral area of campus close to Cedar Street), Hardin-Simmons University, 2200 N. Hickory St., Abilene.
